The thing about Erzsebet is that she's a very unsubtle colonialism metaphor.
Olrox likens her to the Spaniards who invaded his land and slaughtered his people, She speaks of how she wants to conquer Europe and later the "New World" because she considers it her divine right to do so (The Manifest Destiny ideology that made invaders believe that they were divinely ordained to destroy the native population and settle on their land).
She tells the Night Creatures in episode 8 to silence Edouard's singing. During the French Revolution, music and songs were considered a fundamentally important part of it (him singing the songs he used to sing when he was a human could also symbolise his rebellion against his nature as a Night Creature, beings that were considered nothing but bloodthirsty, mindless monsters that held no memories of their past lives)
Even the great power she possesses is not her own, it was the blood of Sekhmet, an Egyptian goddess, another land she conquered and stole from (Drolta says that she was an Egyptian priestess in life, making me believe that Erzsebet was the one to turn her)
She promises slave-owning vampires that as their Messiah she will return the world to it's "natural order", where the slaves that revolted against them will become their property again.
This directly contradicts what Annette's mentor said. That slavery may seem like this practise that always existed to people like Annette who was born into a family of slaves, and lived the majority of her life in chains and people like Comte de Vaublanc who was likely born into a family of slaveowners, someone who spent his entire life enslaving and abusing people. But ultimately, humans did not come into this world as slaves and slaveowners. Turning slavery into something that is not natural and inevitable but rather a man-made evil that can be defeated.
Idk i noticed those things while watching the show and i saw no one in the tags talking about it so I decided to write down my thoughts.

I always laugh when vampires plan to block out the sun and make it eternal nighttime because... what are you going to eat? Humans, animals, and plants require sunlight to survive. Soon enough, everything will die, and what will be left?
Nothing but vampires and their shitty plans.

Castlevania Nocturne really made every character a bad bitch.
Annette? Baddest Bitch who punches slavers in the throat and gets a reckless hunk to fall for her. She's an earth and a metalbender to boot! Plus did you see her hair?????????? Gorgeous. Stunning. Beloved.
Richter? Bro was fighting like Zuko. While everyone around him like Drolta and Olrox were serving cunt, he was serving hands. E for Everyone. Trevor and Sypha would be so proud.
Juste? Depressed GILF with a glorious beard and hair combo? Who wielded the Belmont Whip like it was nothing? Fucking baddie.
Drolta? PINK FIRE HAIR. HER SHOES WITH NO HEELS. SHE WAS SO FUCKING COOL. I loved her so much. Every single scene she was in was a delight.
Tera? Kindly MILF vibes. The mommy next door. Woof woof bark bark. I would die for her. Kill for her. The Abbott is a fucking idiot for choosing a God who can't save him over Mommy.
Olrox? I'm so normal for him. Trust me. I'm cool. I'm chill. I'm not jealous of Mizrak or anything like that hahahahahahahahahahah. I don't wake up flushed in sweat, thinking I had Olrox wrapped around me. No! Nope. Not one bit. I'm cool. I'm a guy. Hahahaha.
Erzsebet? Look she's obviously a lesbian and has no interest in a schmuck like me, but she's so cool. She's wonderful. I despise her with every fibre of my being, but interwoven in that hatred is admiration. She is that bitch.
Alucard? What the hell am I supposed to talk about?
IT'S ALUCARD.

I designed Erzsebet's ballgown for Castlevania: Nocturne! She's such a monumental figure, almost architectural, and I wanted to bring that into her clothing by drawing on baroque construction.
Erzsebet's incredible base character design is by @samueldeats

I do wonder how many times Olrox was forced to bow before the Spanish after they invaded and colonised his homeland. The look of absolute hatred he had for Erzsebet when he was forced to bow before her definitely brought some very old, very painful memories for him.

Erzsebet Bathory- Thematic Character Analysis
I've seen a lot of posts about Erzsebet Bathory, and the general sense is that while her design is cool, she's not very well-developed or impressive from a character standpoint. I agree... Somewhat.
I'm going to get into it below, but the TL;DR version is that from a characterization standpoint, she is weak, but from a thematic standpoint, she is Everything.
Disclaimer: I have not been fortunate enough to play any of the games, so this analysis will focus solely on the show. <3
First, what do vampires mean in storytelling?
A vampire can symbolize many things, but here are the big three: they're a representation of the Other, the unknown (kind of like Frankenstein's Monster), but they can also be a manifestation of carnal, sinful, or deviant desires (think Dorian Grey). The one I'm going to focus on here, as it's the most relevant, is the third main type: the Parasite. Vampires are bloodsucking, gluttonous, selfish starving monsters that consume and consume until there is nothing left (think Robert Baratheon).
This was a theme that was explored in the first series with the Church's opulence and their desire to sacrifice innumerable human lives for the sake of their image and power. Carmilla is the same, but in contention with the Church.
This theme is expanded upon beautifully in Nocturne, with the French Revolution bourgeoise and American colonization and slave trade building upon the themes of the first series. Olrex talks about his home being destroyed, his lover's people being exterminated but holding onto his identity even in undeath. Annette holds onto her Yoruban faith and her Creole heritage taught to her by her mother and fellows even after generations of cultural genocide at the hands of her masters- a combination of more than one old indigenous faith and newer conglomerations of the same. (In this way, one could say that Erzsebet Bathory and Annette are foils!)
How does Erzsebet Bathory fit into this thematically?
Let me explain it like this: Erzsebet Bathory is a white woman dripping in stylized opulence who swallowed an Egyptian god. The truest enemy in this series is colonialism: the consumption of everything and everyone that isn't white and Christian to expand white and Christian ideals and desires using God as a face for their misdeeds- the consumption of people, land, culture, religion, knowledge, kindness. What could not be consumed was destroyed.
In this way, Erzsebet Bathory is the manifestation of all the greatest evils people of color and minorities have ever faced, and continue to face today: that of homogenization, exploitation, and destruction.
The fact that this is expanded by her vampiric elitism builds upon this idea by including all human beings. It's open knowledge among many anthropological circles that colonization destroyed a lot of technology, culture, and knowledge, has held society back, and continues to lead to unnecessary and painful struggle among society (largely due to that fact that many developed nations' governments are still being run by vampires today- how are all my fellow Americans doing as we barrel toward a government shutdown for this very reason?).
Erzsebet Bathory signifies the consumption of the human spirit and the death of mankind, wrapped up in a beautifully terrifying amalgam of every single sin the colonizers ever committed. She's not the ultimate character of Nocturne by a long shot, but she is the ultimate monster.

Who the Fuck is Erzebet?!?!? (the vampire not the murderer)
Tumblr media
I don't know.... there's something off about her. i mean clearly, erzebet is a genocidal-torturing-murdering madwoman who wants all to worship her bc she's a "goddess". but is she tho?
Tumblr media
like- stay with me on this. her entire story just seems.. off. it just feels so weird and contrived and strange. like she obviously succeeded in blotting out the sun and transforming into a creepy lion lady but- why is this the first time we're ever hearing of her? if she's been alive since Sekhmet- why the fuck hasn't she decided "oh hey i'm a god- i'm gonna take over the world in 410 instead of 1746 (or whatever the year is in nocturne)"
Tumblr media
like why didn't she challenge dracula to a du-du-duel to show the world she is a goddess? why didn't the belmonts or alucard or fucking dracula or carmilla herself ever mention that one vampire who's also kind of a god and wants everyone to know.
Tumblr media
idk.. like obviously most of this can be chocked up to they probably didn't have nocturne even in their minds at the time of castlevania or they just had very few ideas. and fair enough, that's totally fine, i can absolutely look past that...
Tumblr media
what i CAN'T look past is the fact that every seen erzebet is in, every character who talks about her in adoration, every chance she mentions she's a god and drank Sekment's blood- just feels suspicious. i feel like she's lying. i feel like there's something even more dark and disturbing and creepy about who she is that we'll find out about later.
Tumblr media
I just don't believe erzebet. I don't believe what the show is telling us. I don't think she's a god. I think everyone else thinks she's a god. I think she's convinced herself she's a god after so many years. but i think there's something else there. something creepier. something more unnerving.
Tumblr media
if i had to guess- i think she took some sort of old magic to get the powers she has. or made some deal with a demon or something to be able to literally blot out the sun. but one way or the other, i think erzsebet has clearly and utterly lost her mind and any sense of reality. she's beautifully and dangerously unhinged.
Tumblr media
I'm genuinely so excited to see what happens next with erzsebet. she's a fascinating character and one of the first villains i can remember genuinely unnerving me. she's horrifying but i also can't stop looking at her. like lowkey I'd probably worship the devourer of light too.

My favorite little character trait so far in Castlevania Nocturne is Olrox's possessiveness.
Once he marks something as his, it's his whether he even realizes it or not.
We are told, straight up by him, that he turned his lover into a vampire without his partner's say-so. Lenore mentioned the nature of Vampires—the ever-present hunger. This burning desire to grow and consume, consequences be damned. We see this in Erzsebet's obsessive need to become the ruler of all things in existence, so much so that she has fashioned herself as the Messiah. We see this compulsive gluttony in Carmilla and her all-consuming greed; she simply must have it all, because no one else is deserving of the world.
We see it in Godbrand's animalistic, sadistic tendencies when hunting his prey. Chō's demented need to make every kill, every transformation a perverse performance of her monstrous skill.
We definitely see it in Dracula. His anger and wrath, razing kingdoms and laying waste to societies.
There is a gaping maw seemingly inherent in all those turned into Vampires. Humanity's flaws taken to their most extreme conclusions once the Vampiric venom drips through.
Olrox is possessive beyond belief. What is his is his.
He claims he doesn't love Mizrak, but risks exposing himself to Drolta and Erzsebet the second Mizrak's life is in danger.
He cannot let go, just like Vlad. He must get even. With Olrox, at least this thirst for vengeance is balanced by his adherence to what he views as justice, which means he isn't the type to initiate a war in the name of his beloved. Olrox is "An Eye for an Eye" adherent.
It's something that truly intrigues me, because every single named Vampire exhibits this endless hunger.
Even Death, who is considered a type of vampire itself.
Alucard, I think, is free (or at least more in control) because of Lisa's own human nature—the ability to feel satisfaction, as well as her nurturing light. This is only developed further because of Trevor, Sypha and Greta.
Which begs the question: what is Tera's hunger? What is that idea or feeling that'll hook its fangs into her skin and drive her into reckless abandon?
Love for Maria and Richter? The feelings of betrayal against the Abbott? Her hatred of Erzsebet for the murder of her sister?
Another fucking reason why I need SEASON 2 NOW GOD FUCK NETFLIX STOP RENEWING EMILY IN PARIS YOU WACKOS.

Thinking about how Trevor was brought back after his fight with Death and had a what if moment— instead of being brought back to his time immediately, the Infinite Corridor takes him to 1790s France like in Okami when Shiranui suddenly appeared in the Wawku Shrine. Having both Richter and Juste in absolute shock and awe at the legendary Belmont who aided in the defeat of Dracula, but also Alucard becoming an emotional wreck seeing him after he’s been dead for hundreds of years. We all know Trevor would 100% kick Erzsebet’s ass. He could care less that she’s a god.
