Officials now say 19 people are dead after tornado destroyed homes and buildings in Nashville

NASHVILLE — At least one tornado and strong storms tore through Nashville and a swath of Middle Tennessee late Monday and early Tuesday, killing at least 19 people, injuring many others and leaving a number of homes and other buildings in ruins.

More than 45 buildings were damaged in Nashville alone, and more than 150 people in metro Nashville have been taken to hospitals because of the storm, said city Fire Chief William Swann. Tens of thousands of power outages were reported in the region.

“As tragic as this is — and our hearts are broken — we are certain that we’ll surround these folks and we’ll do what is necessary” to recover, Gov. Bill Lee said.

At least 19 deaths have been reported, according to Tennessee Emergency Management Agency in four counties: Davidson County, where Nashville is, as well as in Putnam, Benton and Wilson counties, Lee said. One additional person died from a medical situation, Wilson County officials told WKRN.

Tornadoes were reported at least three times along a 145-mile stretch, from the small city of Camden just after 11 p.m. CT, through Nashville after midnight, and into the Cookeville area in Putnam County shortly before 2 a.m., the National Weather Service said.

About 20 people are in Nashville-area hospitals because of tornado or storm damage in the city, Mayor John Cooper told CNN affiliate WTVF.

“There are a couple of tragic cases, in one case a tree falling on a car and there are also I believe about 20 people in the hospital, so we need to monitor that very carefully,” Cooper said.

“We all worry about some people being left in some buildings that have been damaged and I know the first responders are working their way through that problem.”

Country music artist Taylor Hicks, a Nashville resident and Season 5 winner of “American Idol” in 2006, told HLN that a tornado damaged homes near his in the Germantown neighborhood.

“There’s homes leveled. There’s churches that have been hit by this. There’s been a lot of people that’s been affected in downtown Nashville. It’s been a rough night,” Hicks said.

Officers who specialize in urban search and rescue are being called in, Nashville police said. Rescuers are focusing their efforts in Germantown, East Nashville and Hermitage, according to Joseph Pleasant, spokesman with the Nashville Office of Emergency Management.

Homes are destroyed in Mt. Juliet, near Nashville

Among the hardest-hit areas in Tennessee was Mt. Juliet, a suburb about 20 miles east of Nashville. The storm tore apart several homes and other buildings, obliterated their roofs and scattering debris across yards, aerial video from CNN affiliate WSMV showed.

An unspecified number of people were injured there, and police are searching for others who might be hurt, Mt. Juliet police said.

Schools in Wilson County, where Mt. Juliet is located, will be closed for the rest of the week because of storm damage, the county sheriff’s office said. Parts of a school there, West Wilson Middle School, were flattened, video from WSMV showed.

Further to the east, in Putnam County, there are “several critically injured” people, county Mayor Randy Porter told CNN in a Facebook message. The county suffered damage to several homes and power lines, he said.

In a Facebook post, the Putnam County Sheriff’s Department confirmed a tornado touched down between the city limits of Cookeville and Baxter.

The Putnam County Sheriff Department says some of the worst hit areas are in Charleton Square, Plunk Whitson, Echo Valley and Prosperity Point.

Several injuries have been reported in the city of Cookeville, Mayor Ricky Shelton said.

The Cookeville Community Center has been opened as an emergency shelter, Porter said in a Facebook post.

The Nashville Emergency Operations Center has partially activated to respond to the damage from the storm, according to a tweet from the center. The center later tweeted that all non-essential Nashville government offices will be closed along with Nashville schools.

An emergency shelter has been opened at the Centennial Sportsplex on 25th Avenue North and the Red Cross is responding to help displaced residents, the EOC said. A previous shelter at the Farmer’s Market was closed after it lost power, the EOC said.

Voting delayed one hour in Davidson and Wilson counties

The storms came as Tennessee prepared to join other states for Super Tuesday presidential primary voting.

In Davidson County, where Nashville is, and Wilson County, voting will be delayed one hour because of the storms, officials said.

At least 50,100 power outages were reported statewide early Tuesday, according to poweroutage.us, with more than 47,000 reported by Nashville Electric Service.

Metro Nashville Public Schools are closed due to tornado damage throughout the city, a notice from the district said. Election polling sites at school facilities will be open unless otherwise noted, according to the notice.

John C. Tune Airport in West Nashville also “sustained significant damage,” according to a tweet from Nashville International Airport, which did not suffer any apparent damage. The Airport Authority has activated the Emergency Operations Center, and the public has been advised to stay away from the airport until further notice, the tweet said.

Scraps of wood and metal lined the street as people stood outside in their pajamas with their pets surveying the damage.

A resident of the area impacted by the tornado, who didn’t give her name, told WTVF she was woken up by the tornado as it tore the roof off part of her building.

“It just woke you out of your sleep,” she said. “I’m lucky my side didn’t get torn off. The other side is totally torn off.”

“When you’re inside it’s one thing, but to walk outside and see this, it’s bad,” the woman told the affiliate.

Severe weather still possible across the South

Strong to severe storms still are possible across parts of the South on Tuesday, including Texas, North Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina and Virginia.

In central and eastern Alabama, a tornado watch was scheduled to be in effect until 11 a.m. CT.

And people who are seeking to undermine the government efforts of bringing relief and bringing aid and bringing restoration of services to our country... we need to stop it!

If people have complaints - I have heard of some complaints - we will address those administrative issues. We will put better structures in place to facilitate the more efficient delivery of supplies.

But we cannot be going out there on social media, and on the radio and elsewhere, and making these unfounded, baseless, malicious allegations. Don't think it's going to hurt me, it's not going to hurt me! And this thing must stop! Because it is really pissing me off that people out there talking a bunch of nonsense about food supplies and political interference in the delivery of food supplies... which all of these attempts are geared to undermine our efforts!

This is really, really pissing me off and I am very upset about what some people are doing in this country. We have to stop it! There are people busting their asses out there seeking to bring a better way of life for our people!

And there are people who are sitting on their console or sitting there before some computer, and just posting things. They're not even in the country and they're posting things! People are sending messages to them, they haven't been able to verify this information.

All of the original international agencies who have been there - you've heard from me this week - they are the ones who have been responsible for delivering the supplies. We haven't commandeered any relief supplies from any international or regional agencies. They came here. They have the boats; they have the helicopters. They have the means to deploy and to deliver the supplies.

We really have to stop this foolishness.

Because the only people who will be affected by this are the people of Dominica. And the most vulnerable in our country, the people whose homes have been destroyed, who do not know where they're sleeping tonight, the people who do not know whether when Monday comes they'll have a job, who do not know how they're going to pay their mortgages.

I have no time for politics. No time for politics. Absolutely no time for partisan politics.

My interest and commitment is to do what I can as the Prime Minister of this country to build hope for the people and to ensure that we can rebuild our country in the soonest possible time.

And tonight I want to address the nation. I will speak to you on a number of actions I have taken as Prime Minister. The number of cities in the world I will be visiting in the next few days to speak to the financial agencies, to speak to governments as to what are our needs in this country.

As a result of a trip to the United Nations, for example, the Secretary General of the United Nations will come to Dominica in October to see for himself along with staff, so that he himself can continue the advocacy on behalf of Dominica.

Dominica needs all of us to focus on rebuilding this country and bringing hope to our people and letting people know there will be a better tomorrow, but we cannot do this when people are distracted by all these nonsense elements.

If people have genuine concerns - you have not gotten supplies, or you think supplies may not have come to a community - let the EOC know that. But to go out there and send these messages to give the impression that we are playing politics with food... I have no time to play politics with corned beef or sardines!

I am telling you I am really, really pissed off and I have not gotten pissed off since the hurricane but this nonsense must stop. Because I shouldn't have deal with this foolishness about supplies and people making all sorts of political statements and phony allegations about food supplies and the administration of food supplies.

What the hell, we have to stop it! We have to stop it. Do you want to wake up one morning and have no government in place to run this country?

Think about the hundreds of jobs we've lost as a result of hurricane Maria! And how our lives have been turned upside down! For the worse. And make suggestions as to how we believe we can help this country rebuild itself, because the fundamental responsibility of rebuilding this country will rest on our shoulders: the 72,000 of us who reside in this country.

Please, please stop it. You're not helping yourself, you're not helping your families, you're not helping this country. Stop it.

For the sake of God, stop it!

He's uncanny and unwilling to open up to most, so most people aren't really willing to spend a ton of time with him. This does not keep girls his age from finding him attractive, though. What teenager girl doesn't find the mysterious angsty boy a bit charming??

The rest: Archer is seen as pretty much universally attractive in his games, and he also forges several decent relations with the individuals of his era. He's awkward at times, but it's part of his charm. Pirate is just hot. Every person I've shown him to starts acting disrespectfully. That's all I'm going to say on that. He's also just a nice guy to hang around. Cloudy and Farmer are pretty much on the same level. They're both wholesome community boys who like to help. They look trustworthy and capable :)) Despite his disposition, Collector is unfailingly kind and willing to help anyone he comes across. He has an aura about himself that people like and trust. Forge is quite similar to Cloudy and Farmer, in that he's got a heart of gold and is always happy to help, but he's a bit more mischievous, a bit more chaotic, and he keeps his secrets close to his chest. Piper is babey, your honor. He gets anxious and quiet sometimes, and he lacks the confidence of his fellow heroes, but he's adorable and I want to squish his cheeks Scout is a bit standoffish, but apart from the usual hero stuff, he's got his moments of goofiness to contrast with his serious attitude. He's considerate, always fighting for the people, and because of that, he's trusted by the people.

In the end, how much rizz each boy has really depends on your personal tastes, but this is my estimation the general consensus.

Officials now say 9 people are dead after tornado ripped through Nashville

NASHVILLE — Middle Tennessee was hit by tornado overnight Monday into Tuesday morning after severe storms moved through the area.

The tornado passed through downtown Nashville around 1 a.m. The path of the storm traveled almost exactly to a 1998 tornado that hit East Nashville.

Some of the hardest-hit areas in the storm include Centennial Blvd and Briley Parkway in West Nashville, where there were reports of heavy damage to planes at John C. Tune Airport. Several hangars have been destroyed and power lines are down. The public is advised to say away from John C. Tune until further notice.

Overturned tractor-trailers littered the interstates on Interstate 24 near Antioch and Interstate 40 near Mt. Juliet.

Metro Nashville Public Schools are closed Tuesday.

Longtime businesses such as Basement East in East Nashville and Jack Brown’s in Germantown were flattened. Five Points neighborhood in East Nashville is reportedly half-destroyed.

WKRN confirmed nine people have so far been killed in the storms including one in Benton County when a mobile home was picked up and thrown into a field. Two of the other victims were in Nashville. Four of the victims were in Putnam County and two addition victims were in Wilson County.

Nashville EOC was partially activated Tuesday morning to respond to emergency calls and damage following the severe weather. Representatives from OEM, Nashville Fire Department, Mayor’s Office, Metropolitan Police Department, Davidson County Sheriff’s Office, Metro Water Services, Metro Storm Water, Metro Public Works, Emergency Communications, Metro Nashville Public Schools, Metro ITS, Planning/GIS Department, Metro Codes, Engineers as well as NES are gathering in the EOC to monitor damage reports and respond to emergency calls around the county.

Mt. Juliet was also hard hit with multiple people reportedly injured and multiple homes damaged.

We have deputies across the county on foot checking multiple residences and businesses that have been damaged. We ask everyone to stay in your homes and not venture out at the moment to see the damage to allow roadways free to all first responders.

An emergency shelter with running water is open for residents displaced by the storms at Nashville Farmer’s Market on 900 Rosa L. Parks Blvd in Nashville.
