Sequel to But When? And Why? And How?
About Dolores and Mirabel; and the aftermath of the things they heard. Set in the Miracles Plus AU.
Because an anon wanted to know how the family reacted.
Warning, very sensitive topics below.
~~~~~~
A Restless and Unanswered Night
Dolores walks Mirabel back to Casita.
It’s a silent affair. One of Mirabel’s weak arms draped around her shoulders as she guides the girl along the path.
The medication bounces roughly against Dolores’ leg in her pocket. Mirabel hadn’t taken it when the midwife offered it to her. It’s going to leave a bruise.
The first thing that happens when they get back is Mirabel whispering that she feels sick.
Dolores doesn’t want to deal with the faff of the shared bathroom, so allows Mirabel to use the one in her room.
Rubbing her back and holding her hair (and glasses) aside, while Mirabel heaves until there’s nothing left. Dolores doesn’t blame her.
When it finally ends, she just curls up on the bathmat, sobbing with fresh tears. Wailing in terror. Screaming in distress. And Dolores doesn’t blame her.
That’s when Dolores goes to find the family.
Or, well, Mirabel’s immediate family. (Dolores will tell the rest of the adults later).
“I have to talk to you,” Dolores informs, entering the kitchen, with Isabela and Luisa tagging along behind her.
Julieta and Agustín look just as confused as their daughters, but they seem more willing to stop what they are doing and hear her out.
They are sat around the dining table and Dolores taps her glass anxiously, searching for the words.
“Mirabel is pregnant.”
None of them connect the dots.
Luisa spits out her coffee. Julieta blinks. Agustín still looks confused.
Isabela scoffs, and then laughs, “What were the chances of immaculate conception in the family Madrigal?” As soon as the joke leaves her mouth, she realises.
“Someone…” Julieta can’t bring herself to finish the question. Dolores nods.
Luisa’s mug shatters in her hand.
“Who?” Agustín asks.
“We… we don’t know.” Dolores answers. “I heard the heartbeat ages ago, but I didn’t want to say anything at first. I confronted her about it and she had no idea. I took her to a midwife… she’s almost seven months along. She doesn’t know how or when it happened.”
“Drugged.” Isabela piped up. “It’s the only way she wouldn’t have known.”
Nobody said anything.
“Where is she?” Julieta inquires, shakily.
“My room. Bathroom.”
Julieta is already out of her chair, almost knocking the thing onto the floor in her haste to get to her baby.
Another chair scratches back against the tiled floor.
“I’m going out. To fucking kill every fucking bastard with a cock in town,” Luisa seethes.
“Absolutely not. That’s completely insane, Luisa.” Dolores snapped.
Luisa is already gone though.
While Dolores tries to manage Luisa, chasing after her cousin, who wandered off in search of the cooking knives, Agustín breaks down crying at the table.
Isabela gets up and hugs him, not knowing what else to do.
They stay like that for an hour.
~~~~~~
Having since left Dolores’ room, they were now in Mirabel’s own.
As Mirabel had washed and changed, Julieta made herself useful in cleaning Dolores’ bathroom. It wasn’t necessary, it was just something to do.
Mirabel’s skin, neck downwards, was a-blazing red and sensitive from where she’d clearly very aggressively scrubbed herself clean. Julieta decided to forgo the lecture for now, she’d be too stubborn to listen anyways.
Mirabel now lay in bed, much less hysterical, but by no means calm. While Julieta sat beside her.
They can’t do anything. There’s no way of tracking down a culprit. It’s too late now.
All they can do is prepare in the remaining months for the baby.
“When you were born,” Julieta says, brushing her fingers through Mirabel’s curls. “We didn’t think you had survived. Your Tío Félix had to pinch you to get some noise. You were always so quiet. Every time you slept, I would have a heart attack because I thought something bad had happened. You were so little; I always wanted to cuddle you. You didn’t care for my smothering.”
Mirabel didn’t say anything.
“Luisa was completely obsessed with you. She use to refer to you as her baby and would hit us for trying to separate you two.” She chuckled slightly then. “Not much has changed. She was definitely your favourite too. You knew what you meant when you said ‘purple’ - the colour, but it was also Luisa. My clever, little girl.”
A pause.
She set her hand against Mirabel’s stomach.
“This is your baby, Mirabel. Not anyone else’s. And you are going to love them, just as much as I loved you and your sisters.”
Another pause.
“¿Mirabel? ¿Qué estás pensando, mi amor?”
Mirabel looked up then.
“No quiero este parásito. No quiero esta sanguijuela. Quiero recuperar mi cuerpo.” She tightened her grip on her pillow. “Quiero morir.”
~~~~~~
English translation:
“Mirabel? What are you thinking, my love?”
Mirabel looked up then.
“I don't want this parasite. I don't want this leech. I want my body back.” She tightened her grip on her pillow. “I want to die.”
do you have encanto fic recs? every time I watch encanto I think about how much potential there is for fic but then I never actually read any...I figure that you might be able to give me a place to start if I ever decide to make the plunge! thanks
That insane cackling you heard in the distance was me upon reading this ask. Um. Yes. Yes I do have many encanto fic recs and I’m so glad you asked! I’m limiting myself to 10 of my all time favorites. Should you choose to delve in I’d be happy to rec more. I tried to do a smattering of the types of fics I like.
Note, Bruno is my favorite character and as such most of these are Bruno-centric or he plays a major role.
The Sandman by @cthene Rated G 30K Complete
Bruno explores his Gift.
Just trust me on this one. It’s fantastic. I’ve literally reread it 5 times. If Bruno as a time wizard plus a really great look at the relationship between him and Mirabel sounds like your cup of tea I cannot recommend this one enough.
Nos Sigue la Noche (The Night Follows Us) by Thornvale Rated T 36K Complete
Post canon, Mirabel can’t help but feel as though something is going to go wrong; mysterious Tío Bruno is behaving more strangely than usual and something about the magic seems to be changing. Not only that, but an old danger is lurking in the shadows of the mountains surrounding the Encanto.
As they learn to see by @cannibalthoughts Rated T 67K WIP
Four and a half years after hiding in the walls, Bruno has an accident bad enough for Casita to call for help, and the family’s problems stop being ignorable.
aka: Bruno slips and knocks over about a dozen family crises on his way down.
I adore everything about this fic. Cannibalthoughts writes Bruno’s internal headspace SO WELL it’s the perfect blend of humor and angst.
a hair on the head of john the baptist by icarusinthesand Rated T 4.5K Complete
Unsettled in the new Casita, Bruno goes to the usual place wayward prophets seeking solace go.
This one leans into the fact that they’re all Catholic and explores how Bruno feels about being a prophet. Also has a fantastic conversation between him and Mirabel. This one has my whole heart and I’ve reread it many times.
A Prophet In His Own Land by @madrigaljail Rated T 33K Complete
Part of the Madrigal In-Laws Verse that flushes out Felix and Agustin’s families. I highly recommend everything in this series but Prophet is my favorite.
Growing up in the close-knit community of the Encanto, Bruno Madrigal is many things to many people: a dutiful and difficult son, a loyal, irritating brother, a shining star, a lurking menace, a dear friend, a familiar mystery, and an object of scorn. Shouldering the burden of all these contradictory roles, he struggles to find his place in both the town and his family.
A Miracle Is Not Earned but Freely Given by @wildlyironicbee Rated T 57K Complete
A bit of an Anastasia/verrrrrrrrry loose beauty and the beast AU
I love this one SO MUCH Please read it it’s got amazing characterization and some really excellent angst and family bonding.
Mirabel grew up listening to the stories her Abuela would tell her about the Encanto and her family's magical house, Casita--and of how it was lost, her Abuelo and Tío sacrificing everything to keep them safe. When she's presented with an opportunity to finally see the ruins of the Encanto for herself, she leaps at the chance. But what--or who--she finds there will alter the lives of her family forever.
Stars Lost Down The River by @ramblesanddragons Rated T 87K Complete
A ‘what if Mirabel ran away after her ceremony, Bruno went after her, and they both got swept down the river and lost their memories’ AU it features them reuniting with the Madrigals and it is just absolutely excellent. Rambles has a lot of Encanto fics and I love all of them.
Bitter Blood by ashtreelane Rated G 19K Complete
Post-Canon. Bruno is only technically the youngest. Really, it's by fifteen minutes, but he is also the smallest, and prone to sickness. The fainting spells probably don't help the weakness his sisters see. Bruno is hypoglycemic, which is annoying, but not dangerous. It gets much worse when he enters the walls.
Excellent Madrigal kids stuff and excellent angst
Never Shall We Die by archive_rat Rated M 99K WIP
Young triplets pirate AU. Pirate queen Pepa, ship’s doctor Julieta, & navigator Bruno. Listen, come closer, have you ever read something that left you just sitting in awe and wonder, something that every time you reread it you pick up on something new because there is just SO MUCH amazing detail? Because this is that. I cannot sing this fic’s praises enough. Also if AU’s aren’t your thing go read archive-rat’s other Encanto fics set in canon verse (do that even if AUs are your thing) I was very tempted to rec them individually. Landscape with the Fall of Icarus and Axolotl are my favorites.
Just Your Ordinary, Everyday Miracle by @16magnolias Rated T 283K WIP
Bruno/Original Female Character post-canon fic that starts with the question of ‘where did Bruno get the horse?’ at the end of the movie.
A candle. A living house. Magical powers. A 15-year-old girl named Mirabel. Miracles can come in all shapes and sizes, and Bruno's latest miracle may just take the shape of a 41-year-old widow named Lucía and her daughter Josefina. And – uh – maybe also a horse.
This fic has my whole heart. Lucia is such a well written and flushed out character and Mags’ writing is so cozy and I love it so so so so so much. If Bruno/OFC sounds interesting definitely give this one a read.
(Obligatory plug for my own (with @optimistic-violinist) fic Take Back the Kingdom, a modern/fantasy AU where Bruno and the kids have to save their kingdom from an evil wizard with humor, hijinks, and angst galore)
Dragonoid's - Encanto Au
Ok I know there already has been a dragon au, but I was listening to the HTTYD soundtrack and when inspiration strikes, I have to take it-
So, in the world, there are two types of dragons. Normal ones you see flying around with "violent" tendencies. And the second kinds are called dragonoid's. Dragonoid's are a sub type of dragons. With every different type of dragon there's a dragonoid to follow.
As a dragon-oid you are either looked at as a Zoo animal, bad omen, or something to kill for money. Dragon scales and just skin in general is very valuable. Just one scale or slither of skin could have you set for life.
Eggs are even more valuable because the shell is like a crystal. For example:
Tumblr media
Plus, dragon eggs have children in them. If you have one, you can have a constant supply of money. (I'll let you figure that entails on your own)
Dragonoid characteristics.
So, the obvious, scales!
Scales start from the fingers and slightly pass the cubital fossa in a gradient like fashion. Same for the legs. The scales Start from the tip of the toes and slightly pass the knee. Claws are retractable but are still sharp and noticeable.
Their skin is also bioluminescent so they have tons of beautiful spots and patterns that light up in the dark.
Sclera can be a variety of different colors and so can the iris. So when a dragon needs to hide out in the open they need to wear a cloak, as well as gloves.
If you have horns it’s best to shave them down or find a group to stay with. When you live in a group others can bring in much needed necessities for you. Also, horns can be a variety of sizes and can stretch far. So it’s usually mandatory to shave them down so you can lay down properly.
Alma has smaller horns that are about three inches tall so she doesn’t need to worry about shaving them down.
Tails are always gonna be long, about five feet in length  for an average adult. But thankfully they are somewhat thin (only 4-five inches thick) and can easily wrap around a dragon's leg as a way to hide it.
Some have wings, some don't. So, others have to rely on climbing or running/walking. Some can breathe fire, spit out lightning, acid, and some can’t at all. Those that can’t usually rely on their claws and strength.
And yes, every single dragon has a fondness for shiny things and are semi-hoarders of anything shiny and glittery.
Typical places for dragon groups to live are far away areas in forests or crystal caves. Crystal caves are the most common places to live and other dragons will fight other dragon groups for it.  (Dragonoid's are smart resourceful people with astounding intelligence, but I didn’t say they weren’t feral, especially when they need safety.)
-
Alma lived in a pleasant little dragonoid village. She was happy, which is an oddity when you are considered poaching material. It was hidden within the mountains and WAS a safe haven for dragonoid's AND regular dragons.
The story starts out the same, and you know how it ends.
-
The encanto is one big underground crystal cave mixed with a jungle..sort of? Kind of like this for reference (Yes, it's from HTTYD, BITE ME!)
Tumblr media
There’s even a water part for more aquatic dragons. Speaking of which, the underground sanctuary has smaller caves inside fit for families to live in. These smaller caves have large holes in them that work like bedrooms.
However, as an egg and even a baby, you sleep inside your parents' room until you're at least five years old.
I need worldbuilding ideas for this au soooo
Oh my gosh, colorless au! I can already imagine the stunning visuals! Although I have to say, when it comes to the colorless parts, I don't think they should be all shades of grey like how we typically depict colorless things. Since Alma color trauma stems from standing out amongst the wilderness, the colorless parts should be dull shades of brown and green. I also think this version of Encanto, or at least the colorless parts, should look somewhat overgrown (courtesy of Isabella), with the houses and paths hidden by foliage, because Alma would want to hide the Encanto from invaders. I'm really wondering how the story of Encanto would go with the elements of Coco mixed in, does Mirabel get cursed and go to the land of the dead? would Mirabel's goal be saving the miracle or trying to convince her Abuela to accept color again? Speaking of the miracle, what about the candle? It normally shines a bright yellow, would the candle be different or would Alma simply hide it? So many questions!!! Please at least give me a colorless Casita
Sobbing I so glad you like it <333
I do agree with the being the colors being not out there. Covered in foliage. In the original post, I did want to use neutrals along with muted, and possibly desaturated, in some cases, colors. They don't stand out as much (although I am biased, because gray is my favorite colors, and most of the clothes i tend to wear are on the darker/desaturated side).
I also like the foliage idea! I think even before Isabela got her gift, don't think care for the exterior of the house would be prioritized, as they want it to overgrown.
Also, while it's no enforced, it's heavily 'suggested', that you wear darkened clothes, muted and desaturated. Implied. It's kind of considered taboo (bad luck even) to wear bright, light colors. Clothing dye is very rare, and marks up at a high rate since it isn't made on the regular. How Mirabel gets access to these? Probably Agustín. Ignore the fact that I didn't do the embroidery 💀 colors for the family aren't set in stone, but its mainly to get an idea.
Tumblr media
Also, Casita. I really wanted an au where Casita was in a mountain becase houses inside of mountains are so cool. Plus it quite literally blends it. Colors aren't set in stone, i just took the colors from what I remember and timed them down by a ton and removed the flowers and replaced it with overgrown plants. Possibly weeds. They live at the top, and while it's not a long walk, it is always snowing and cold (not because of Pepa though, that's just the magic and natural nature things) so it's not unusual to see the Madrigals coming down the mountain with some kind of covering over them. The inside of Casita is pretty warm though, it's not cold.
Can you tell I suck at drawing houses.
Tumblr media
As for the candle, I think it would be different, but probably not by much. And I imagine Alma doesn't just keep it in the window, and if she does, it's not shining as bright. Not because of problems (until later), but just because. Alma kind of wills it to not be too bright.
And Mirabel, going to the land of the dead. Yes. How she gets there. I'm not sure. Right now, the best I can come up with is that she does something with the candle and accidentally ends up there. And Pedro is the only person who she can think of to send her back, so she's basically running around looking for him (while also being mezmorized by the brightness, and lights, and colors of the land of the dead.)
And I don't mind the questions❗❗ Just shows me your genuinely interested <33
Linked Universe Encanto Au?
Kind of dumb, but kind of fun linked universe au. Were the boys plus others are a magical family protecting the secret village of Hyrule, and have a magical house.
We have Hylia as Abuela  And her three children
Time, Skyward Sword Zelda/Sun, and Warriors
Times power is what he does in MM, were he puts a mask on, he transforms into that creature. He can create new mask if he wants to, but considering his room  is just walls of mask he doesn’t really need to. (He reflects Julieta)
Sun’s powers are just her zelda powers, can defeat evil, wisdom, protector of light you get it. (She reflects Pepa)
Warriors powers is he can time travel, however, whenever he does a not so great outcome happens. So everyone assumes its him. Little do they know he stopped tragedy after tragedy but can never quite fix everything. (He reflects Bruno, and yes he does end up living in the walls.)
Now for the children!
Time’s married Malon and together they have.  Twilight, Wild, Wind, and Aryll
Twilight’s, gift is turning into a wolf, so he can guard the town better then almost anyone. He’s also just naturally super strong so he helps out with the farms a lot.
Wild’s gift is he can carry almost anything. If he has a bag with him, somehow he can fit an entire house into that bag and then carry it wherever it needs to go. Since he’s also a great cook he often uses his gift to carry around a pantries worth of food and start cooking.  (Both Twilight and Wild reflect the characters of Isabela and Luisa. With a lot of the town seeing them as golden children, but also having so much pressure put on them.)
Wind is our giftless boy, but loves his family more then anything, and do whatever it take to protect them. (He’s Mirabel)
Aryll, would be getting her gift soon. When she does she be able to talk to animals. Mainly seagulls. (She’s basically Antonio)
Sun/Zelda is married to Sky (He married into the family). Together they have.  Legend, Hyrule, and Four.
Legend’s gift is weather manipulation, he can divide a area into a sperate season if needed. Or switch season at a snap of his fingers. He’s also dating Marin.
Hyrule’s gift would be healing, and having fairy wings. That way he could get to people faster.
Four’s gift would be like the games splitting into four separate people and shrinking. He’s also the towns main blacksmith so he’s under a lot of pressure to get things done.  (These three boys are kind of like Dolores and Camilo, but really they see their cousins as brothers so ah. Really Legend be the the most like Camilo, because he have fun singing about his uncle warrior.)
Basically all of their gifts reflect the games in some way. Also I’m very aware Wind is connected to magic, I just think he’s the closest in personality to Mirabel, and is just a great hype man.
Just a fun idea I thought of when I was listening waiting on a  miracle and thought of wind. Anyways hope you enjoyed!
Note
waiting on a miracle but yui angst
it would be so out of character for yuii but in a au where she finally gets a world full of magic she never gets the appreciation because she's simply a magicless girl given 'unfortunate circumstances'
just some thoughts
Actually that makes sense (Waiting on a Miracle, song from Encanto).
Plus the OBs only happen after Yuu shows up, so could see them getting blamed (said them since it could apply to more OCs)
“Our own Casita” Au
Aka AU where Felix and Agustin discuss and decide with Pepa and Julieta after Mirabel’s ceremony to move out of Casita.
While Alma is so focused on the gifts and protecting the miracle, a year after Bruno went missing and Mirabel didn’t get her gift, Agustin started to really notice how the concern about these gifts really got to the family. Even after almost fourteen years (I like to think they didn’t rush to have the babies after marriage) of living as a Madrigal, he’s starting to really notice the strain that the gifts actually seem to put on the gifted members of the family.
How Julieta was always the only one to do the cooking, having to get up very early in the morning to prepare so much food for not only the family, but the entire village because her gift seemed to be needed every single day, which he felt a bit guilty that he was someone who needed that gift.
Or How Luisa, his second born daughter, she was only ten years old but she was already doing so manny chores that he was sure would make anyone tired let alone a girl her age. She’d been doing almost double the work for a year under Alma’s insistence to help around even more than she had before.
There was Isabela who seemed to always be sitting still like she was being painted in a portrait, but he could swear that her smiled was a little strained every time she agreed with something Alma asked of her.
Of course there was also how his youngest was effected. He saw how hard she tried to be as ‘amazing’ as her sisters and cousins. He’d noticed that Camilo hadn’t been able to play with her as much as they used to. He’d also noticed that Alma had started to distance herself from the little girl. Before the ceremony, Mirabel loved to hug and be hugged by Alma. Nowadays, he hadn’t seen the matron even give her a little pat on the head.
When he voiced his concerns to Felix, his best friend and hermano admitted he noticed the strain with Pepa too. That he didn’t like that if someone wanted their crops waters they’d have to make his beautiful wife feel unhappy or that she’d have to force herself to be happy or stay in her room if someone wanted a sunny afternoon. She should be allowed to feel her emotions without having to worry about how convenient it was for other people.
He worried for Dolores, his sweet quiet daughter who couldn’t make many friends because there were still kids who believed that someone with her gift could only be nosy and a snitch. Who knew what would happen with Camilo and his gift as he was still learning and getting used to the chores of being other people.
Their gifts were amazing but how reliant everyone seemed and the fact that using their gifts seemed to be the most important thing to some people.
After further discussion, they decided to speak about the matters with Pepa and Julieta. There was some reluctance. This had been the way things had always been, why change things after all? But at their age, it was understandable. After another night, they decided to first prepare by finding a plot of land in Encanto that was not occupied.
They built a two houses that connected to each other. They made sure to make rooms for each of the children plus a nursery in case of any future children or grandchildren. It would be best for the family to be able to still be close with one another, especially after losing Bruno the year before, but they needed to see and learn how it was to be without the stress of others expectations.
They decided to leave one last step for Mirabel, adding the doorknob to the front door. After the house was completed, which had taken nearly another year, it would be time to sit down and tell the kids
Ok, I saw encanto again some time ago and I came up with some ideas for the enjago au.
1.- I know that I have commented before that "casita" would be a monastery, but it occurred to me and if it were better at the beginning (before the candle goes out) the temple with fragile foundations? Just think about it the place is unstable and the problem comes from the roots of the family and the miracle, all its base was relatively fragile but at first sight it looked more than imposing and majestic, I think it would be a good metafora at the same time as the screams in the film. When they rebuild their home, it would no longer be that imposing temple, but the monastery a place not only to honor the miracle and live the elementals who care for ninjago, but a place of peace and learning, where they and the next generations can grow and reflect on who they are and their place in the family and the village, without losing themselves in the process.
2.-I realized that we have left echo a little forgotten, so it occurred to me that he might also know that morro is hidden in the walls and given the frequency with which he hurts it wouldn't be strange to see him with some of zane's food, so I could easily pass him food without calling attention.
3. - I like to think of zane as the oldest of the ninjas in this version (maybe 22 years old?), plus that at least in my head I could already be married (or at least committed) to pixal. So the initial song would look like this: "Two girls fell in love with family elemental
And now they're part of the family elemental
So, yeah, bro zane married Pixal and my dad married misako"
And tío wu became an sensei elemental (let's go, let's go)
4. - cole would be the next oldest, and this was one of wu's motivations for pressuring him to commit to nya. As for these two I guess it all started because they got along and spent time together, it was wu who started to see them asa couple and somehow got caught up in this false relationship without knowing how to get out.
5. - kai has unwittingly saved himself from being put into an arranged marriage. Wu has looked for someone to match kai with but has not found "the perfect match for the perfect boy oficial the family". Since garmadon, zane, nya and cole have stepped in whenever he thinks he has found "the perfect match ", finding a big no. Since everyone is perfectly aware of the feel of kai by skylor and viceversa. (when they were teenagers, cole and nya were about to lock them in a closet and not let them out until they confessed, if it wasn't for zane's intervention, though she later wondered if things wouldn't have been better if he had let them go with her plans)
I have more ideas but it's late, so I'll post them later.
Okay so I haven’t seen Encanto yet since I wanna watch it with my family. While I don’t care about being spoiled, if you do and plan to watch it then skip this post.
I kinda wish Mirabel just… gave up on Abuela. Gave up on making her proud and just did what made her happy, not somebody else. Yeah I know the whole movie is about family, but honestly? Sometimes toxic is just toxic and you need to cut that person out of your life. From what I’ve seen, Abuela seemed to care more about the gifts then her family. I know family is important, but mental health is too, ya know? That doesn’t mean the desire to make Abeula proud isn’t there either, but she’s just accepted it.
And it turned out that Mirabel had a gift all along, correct? That… seems counterproductive. Mirabel has done just fine her entire life without a gift and has passed through every single struggle thrown to her. She got to a point where she was happy, finally having the chance to create a bond with her sisters, then it turned out what she knew was a lie and she did have a gift.
If I’m right, the other family members would loose their gifts if Maribel never had a gift, right? I’m not certain, but that sounds more interesting to me then Maribel having a gift and everybody getting their gifts back. You could do a lot with that!
Maribel and the husbands could help their family adjust to life without gifts, the village and family learning skills now they can’t rely on the miracle, perhaps finding out there are other people out there that was similar to how they were? And the Madrigals could help them from their experience, plus some reflection! Or an enemy with a gift shows up and the family and village find ways to defeat them without any gifts!
That’s just my thoughts based off of what I’ve seen though. I might make this an AU once me and my family watch it and I know more. And yes, I know it’s meant for kids. However I don’t think realized they could teach kids to deal with toxic family members despite their emotions or that you have to be the same as others to be accepted. Because those are the vibes I’m getting.
Though the poll was surprising, it does mean I can post this now.
About Dolores and Mirabel; and the interesting things one hears. Set in the Miracles Plus AU.
Comments are always appreciated.
Warning, very sensitive topics below.
But When? And Why? And How?
December 1961
For the Madrigals, there were two ways of discovering pregnancy.
The first being the door. Golden, untouched and full of potential. Even the door handle was yet to receive its initial - that came when the baby was named.
The second was Dolores herself. She heard everything, after all. Which included the tiny heartbeats and minimal movements of unborn infants - it was jarring to hear Camilo before anyone else knew about him. This was more generalised and something she could do for any potential parents in town, not limited to the Madrigals.
Back to the point…
When the door appears, it’s unclear. There is another floor in Casita and the doors seemingly go above their parent’s or as close as they can.
One of Julieta’s girls, obviously. But who? Isabela doesn’t seem against the idea of having more children, her kid is at the age where a sibling is now appealing. And Luisa hasn’t been totally against the idea of having some herself.
Regardless, none of the Madrigals pry.
Days turn into weeks that roll into months and there hasn’t been a peep.
Antonio and Camilo have a bet going on who can find out first. Bruno refuses to even glimpse into the future to find out. Julieta and Agustín practically hang on each word and action, trying to workout which one of their daughters it is.
The baby’s heartbeat is steadier now but still quiet and at every meal, Dolores tries to pinpoint exactly where the noise is coming from. It’s never quiet enough.
She can’t blame Luisa for not admitting yet, or she’s impressed Isabela’s managed to keep her mouth shut this long.
But then, one day, the Madrigals are sat eating dinner, and all of a sudden Dolores hears a flutter like sound at the end of the table. At first, she thinks it’s one of Antonio’s animals. But none of them are here right now. Only Bruno’s rats scurrying on the floor, looking for scraps from the two animal lovers.
She looks around the room, wondering if she might be reacting to something too quiet for the others to notice. Something so insignificant it’s not worth looking for. But then it happens again, Dolores locks her head at the end of the table.
No.
She knows that sound, that feeling.
It’s a baby kicking.
She tries not to look, instead focusing on the plates, moving closer to the source. Though Luisa definitely thinks she’s listening into her conversation with Mirabel, because she suddenly stops turns and decides she’d rather talk to Antonio. And Dolores almost laughs at it because yes, she absolutely wants to know how Luisa flexed the sleeves off her shirt to impress a woman and now needs her sister to fix it.
There’s nothing, and then it happens again.
And Dolores squeaks, putting a hand over her mouth. What if— but it couldn’t be—
But everything she’d thought before about this situation was wrong. Because when she looks up from the plate closest to the source of the sound, she’s looking at Mirabel.
~~~~~~
It feels unbelievable, and Dolores is trying not to cry and laugh all at once. She feels stupid.
All this time they’ve been focused on Isabela and Luisa. No mention of Mirabel. And of course, she’s the one who’s pregnant.
But— when? Why? How?
As far as Dolores was aware her youngest cousin had no romantic or sexual interest in anyone.
Why hasn’t Mirabel told anyone? What is she going to do with a baby? God, she isn’t really putting that working through pregnancy and labour idea into motion to prove a point, is she? She’s not that stubborn, right?
Dolores closes her eyes, takes a deep breath, as tries to push down the questions rising inside her.
Just… Talk to her.
So, she does. Or tries to.
It’s hard. Mirabel has always been closed off when talking about her feelings or personal things.
Every Sunday, after Dolores has worked it out, she takes Mirabel out. Just the two of them on a picnic, in a quiet spot. In the hopes her cousin will say something of her own accord. She doesn’t.
It’s the fourth Sunday.
And Dolores screws waiting for Mirabel to tell her.
“Do you want to tell me what is going on?” She asks, leaning over to the picnic basket and handing Mirabel a plate.
Mirabel doesn’t drop her smile. “What do you mean?”
Dolores raises an eyebrow, “I know there is something going on. You’re more tired, your mood has been all over, and you haven’t been eating right.” She sighs and then tries more softly, “I’d like to help you. But you need to tell me.”
“Overworking,” Mirabel says sullenly, after a beat. “With the new baby there’s a lot to do - new cloths, blankets, clothes and such. It doesn’t help that my sisters won’t tell me who’s it is. I can’t settle on colours and buying fabric is useless. I’ve fallen out of my sleep schedule because sleeping next to the nursery is not practical and I was never great at eating lunch, it’s an unnecessary meal if you ask me.”
She stares at her cousin a long moment, unblinking.
“Are you okay, Dolores? You look—”
“Primita, I know you’re pregnant.”
Mirabel straightens up immediately.
“Pardon?”
Dolores hardens her gaze, “You seriously aren’t going to me you’re pregnant?”
Mirabel blinks. “I’m not pregnant. I assure you, Dolores. I can’t be. I’ve not done… any of that stuff.” She wrinkles her nose in dramatic and somewhat childish disgust.
“Don’t act stupid. You can’t act and you certainly aren’t stupid,” Dolores snaps. She’s getting annoyed that Mirabel can’t take this seriously. “There’s two heartbeats coming from you, primita. I can hear it. I have heard it for weeks. I didn’t want to push, but it’s getting ridiculous now.”
“There can’t be,” she shakes her head. “You must have misheard.”
The two try staring each other down.
Dolores rolls her eyes. She’s right, she knows she is. And she’s not dealing with Mirabel’s denial or whatever else she’s doing, not over something as important as this.
She stands full height and drags Mirabel to her feet.
“Where are we going?”
“Taking you to a midwife, so you can’t live in denial about it.”
An hour later, found them at a midwife’s office. The midwife, Adriana, must have been around the age of their mothers, maybe a little younger.
Mirabel had tried to argue that she didn’t need to be checked at all, but eventually gave in. Dolores wasn’t going to let her leave without a clear answer.
So Mirabel was laid on the bed, looking extremely uncomfortable and trying her hardest not to cry in discomfort. Yet she kept focused on Dolores, as smug as anything. And maybe, just maybe, Dolores was starting to consider the fact that she might be wrong.
“You’re definitely pregnant,” Adriana called, finally. “Six, almost seven months, I’d reckon.”
Dolores scoffed, glancing at her cousin, who no longer looked smug, but before she could say anything Mirabel sat up.
“But I’m not. I’ve been having my period.”
“You haven’t. It may look and feel that way, but that won’t be menstrual bleeding. It is common to experience bleeding in early pregnancy.” The midwife said, firmly. “But you are definitely carrying a baby. Are you familiar with cryptic pregnancies?”
Mirabel swallowed shakily. “But I’ve… I’ve not had intercourse. I never have.”
There was a grim moment of silence.
As the midwife returns to her desk, starting to schedule things and fetching medication, Mirabel sits frozen.
“You really didn’t know?” Dolores asked, half unconvinced.
Mirabel didn’t answer. Her lip quivered, she sobbed and clung to Dolores like a lifeline.

After Isabela's first child is born
Julieta: Oh, my first nieto... I'm finally an Abuela!
Luisa: Ma, what do you mean? They're your second one.... I have a daughter
Everyone stares at her in shock
Luisa: points at Mirabel
Agustín: I am so confused??? You said she was your kitten last week, yesterday she was an angel, and now she’s your daughter???
Julieta: She is also our daughter, Agustín.
~~~~~~
But yes, this is exactly how it goes in the story.
When Mirabel goes to future appointments for her baby, Luisa does insist she’s Mirabel’s mother to be allowed in.
miracles plus au: why hasn’t mirabel had a baby?
She’s twenty-six.
There’s no rush. She has plenty of time.
And she’s perfectly happy with being a single Tía.
Though… have you heard of a cryptic pregnancy?
So, noticed something of a trend with your AUs, and had a question. Many of your AUs have Mirabel harmed, whether beheaded (Ride the Cyclone and Reincarnated), abused (every AU where she isn't the giftless grandkid), or violated (Miracles Plus). Is there a reason she is your whump muse? Not meaning to judge, just an observation.
This will be a long one.
But in short, it’s coincidence. I guess?
Ride the Cyclone is based off a musical off of the same name, with the same premise. Mirabel just happened to fit the beheaded character of Jane Doe the best. And was the only who worked in that small town setting as she had to not be identified (that’s the whole point of Jane Doe) - the others were too well-known.
Reincarnation was intentional. All of them suffered through death though and have their own issues. She is just the youngest of the group, died young and never got to live long enough to solve any of her issues the first time. She also struggles with talking about her emotions, as seen in the film, so it would be wrong to make her willing to do so and eager to take up therapy.
She isn’t abused in every AU where she isn’t the giftless grandkid - nobody really asks for the others, so you don’t get to see her having a better time. The giftless ones in particular wouldn’t be interesting if they followed the entire same plot as canon, so I tweak them a bit to give some originality. And as I’m not limited to the same condiments as the film, I can afford to play about more.
Fracture, Luminous and Imperfect were all spawned of the same idea, which is why you’ll notice some themes and gifts are reused across the three. Having the extra two was to explore Isabela’s dynamic (in the same scenario as Luisa in Fracture) in and out of the family home - I couldn’t have one punishment in one and not the other, which is why Fracture and Imperfect Mira are so similar and both were abused.
Miracles Plus is also intentional. There’s a lot of fics where Mirabel is violated (usually at fifteen) and sometimes ends up pregnant - most of which, I don’t think are handled well. I wanted to write something heavier and play about with the more complex emotions/thoughts of such an experience, especially in a realistic/relatively historically accurate setting.
As for any of the other AUs… I can’t think of anything in particular at the moment or I’ve not had the chance to talk about them much.
Though some of the AUs are suggestions from other people, in which case I can’t take entire credit. If people want to see something different, you only have to ask. I’m happy to give any AU idea a shot.
To be honest though, I think Luisa and Isabela got the most whump across my AUs.
Miracles Plus AU: Mirabel
I’m gonna be honest… I did not expect her to win the poll. (Isabela, Camilo and Bruno tend to be more popular). But it’s a nice surprise.
~~~~~~
AU - starts in January 1962.
Mirabel is twenty-six when the AU starts. And she hasn’t grown at all. The rest of the family are taller than her. She doesn’t like talking about it. Her height isn’t important. In fact, stop brining it up.
You won’t believe how many people mistake her for her mother. Though Mirabel has partially not helped herself in taht department - a lot of her clothes are her mother’s old ones, and even after she’s embroidered them and taken them in to fit herself, the older generation of Encanto still recognise them as Julieta’s.
(Basically just Julieta’s concept art, to be honest).
As one of the two Madrigal kids who aren’t yet in a relationship, she is one of the most desirable brides. And is constantly being chaperoned by one of her family members (particularly Dolores) to try get her chatting to possible suitors.
If you know someone who is interested please let Dolores know—
She is currently trying to keep a low profile in preparation for the first gift ceremony of the new generation. She may or may not be planning on hiding out with Agustín’s parents until it has passed.
Because you can suppress the trauma for the past ten years, but it doesn’t magically disappear.
Feel free to ask questions in asks or comment below - whatever you feel comfortable doing.

Miracles Plus AU: Isabela
Still testing what else she can do.
She was tied with Luisa on the poll, so I’ll just post them in alphabetical order.
~~~~~~
After holding the town’s adoration for so many years, you’d expect that many women fell to her feet as soon as Mariano was out of the picture and she came out.
Initially, that was the case. But the numbers very quickly dropped when they realised she was not the same perfect, graceful angel they had come to fawn over. (Of course, there’s the odd guy who thinks he can change Isa’s mind and is promptly dealt with accordingly).
There’s a few girlfriends but they don’t last long.
That is until Lili Iglesias (based off the background character). Their relationship was bit delayed, due to Lili being Luisa’s crush at the time and Isabela didn’t want to deal with that family drama again.
As soon Dolores heard Luisa’s feelings weren’t the same as hers for Mariano had been, she pushed Isabela into making her move. And for some reason - because Dolores seriously doubts it was Isabela’s awful plant-based flirting - Lili was completely taken by her and the two started dating.
Ever impatient and spontaneous, Isabela came out with a proposal a year or so after. They were happily married in the summer of 1954.
Alongside many plants, they also had a child together. They had a sperm donor - Lili carried the baby; Isabela was a very overprotective wife during those nine months and probably bit several people.
Lidia Jacinta Iglesias Madrigal was born on the 27th September 1957. Most people expected Lidia to be a mini Isabela as far as personality goes, including Isa herself, and though she is fun-loving and chaotic at times, she is also a lot more chill and grounded. If anything, she’s more like her Tía Luisa.
Lidia is currently awaiting her gift, alongside her cousins. Lili is mainly a stay-at-home-mother at the minute, helping out with chores around Casita. Isabela is the same chaotic gardener, except she has her own loving family.
