Chapter 3. Luminous
Casita cracked with a floorboard, getting Luisa's attention. She froze for a moment, not knowing what was going on. Then she realised: today was the fourteenth of November. Her birthday.
"I'm grown up!" Luisa shouted out in happiness, jumping on her bed and trembling her hands in the air. She just spent her last night in the nursery. Camilo looked at her; a small sparkle of curiosity appeared in his eyes as he stood up, holding on to the crib rails. Mirabel sat, also staring at Luisa with interest written on her face.
"I see my little girl is already up." She heard Papi's voice. When did he come into the nursery? "Do you know what's going to happen tonight?"
"My gift ceremony!" Luisa laughed, running to him, then jumped to hug him higher. "I'm a big girl!"
"Oh noo..." Papi looked away in fake sadness. "If you'd grow up just a little bit, I wouldn't be able to carry you on my shoulders." He giggled, taking her in his arms, then put her on his shoulders. Luisa chuckled, reaching up and touching the seller.
She didn't want to stop being carried around. So she clutched to Papi tighter, trying to hold every moment of it. She pursed her lips, asking unsurely. "Will you still roll me on your shoulders after I get my gift?"
"Why is this a question?"
****
Well, Papi wasn't going to stop giving her rides, which was amazing! Luisa looked around, thinking about who she should visit first. Well, of course, her hermana is supposed to be the one; what's even the question?
"Isabela!" Luisa shouted, opening the covered in flowers door.
The older girl groaned, turning over to the other side. "Luisa, por favor, it's five AM." She covered her head with a pillow.
She ignored it, running up to Isabela's bed, then pulling her sleeve, trying to get her up. "You're going to oversleep my gift ceremony!" She screamed in her hermana's ear.
"Luisa, don't be silly; your birthday is..." Isabela shuddered, suddenly opening her eyes widely. "Today?" She asked unsurely.
Luisa nodded, putting her hands on her sides proudly.
"Oh, mi hermana pequea es tan grande ahora." Isabela whispered, wiping a nostalgic tear that ran down her cheek with a handkerchief.
"Let's go!" Luisa pulled her hermana again; there were so many things to do that they couldn't spend their time lying in bed. "We have to start preparing!"
"Maybe you should go and change your clothes." Isabela yawned, lying on her bed again. "I'll sleep for a while."
Luisa crossed her arms in resentment, offended by such a cold action. "Okay, if you won't see me getting my gift, it's your fault." She muttered, walking outside.
****
Mami was already in the kitchen, working as always. Her movements were clear, polished by cooking for many years. Her skin became paler from lack of sleep in the last few months.
"Mami! I'm getting my gift today!" Luisa ran to her, happily reminding her about the main event of today's evening.
Mami chuckled, looking at Luisa upside down, then squatted down to be the same height as her. "Oh, I can't believe how grown you are." She smiled, taking Luisa's arm. "It feels like yesterday you were just born."
"Silly mami." Luisa gigged. "If I was born yesterday, then when was Mira?" Mami let out a sigh and reached for Luisa's cheek, giving her a big, gentle kiss.
****
Luisa was staring at her future door, which almost begged her to open it. But Abuela said that they had to wait until the evening. Luisa couldn't say that she wasn't worried; she still remembered how her prima's ceremony ended with Dolores crying. Luisa really hoped that she wouldn't get anything like that as her gift; she could barely imagine how awful it should be. Sometimes, people around me were too loud, even without any superhuman hearing.
"Luisa," Abuela called her. "Are you ready? It's time to take your party dress." Luisa ran to her, fixing her hair.
"Si." She nodded her head.
Honestly, Luisa would prefer not to wear these special clothes. It was just so uncomfortable; the fabric was too rough and too tight to her body. But it was the sacrifice she needed to get her gift in the best ceremony.
***
It was so boring. When they finished with her appearance, Luisa was finally free to go. Usually, it meant that she had to find other work to do. But today everyone kept repeating. "It's your party; just have fun!" But what was she supposed to do? She couldn't jump or even move freely in this tight dress; after all, she didn't want to wrinkle it. And even if she wanted to, today even Casita was doing its best to make Luisa rest. She lifted her teddy bear a couple of times, but it was not enough. Besides, it was boring. Everyone was focused either on preparations or on taking care of Mirabel and Camilo.
"Hey, are you here?" She heard Bruno's quite unsure voice before the nursery door creaked and he came in. "So... happy birthday?" He touched his elbow.
"You will be at the ceremony, right?" Luisa crossed her hands, frowning. She knew that Tío wasn't exactly here most of the time. Sometimes it felt like he was an outcast in the family. But she wanted to see him on this special day; surely, he wasn't the best partner in running around the house, but he has the best stories!
"Of course, I will." Tío stretched his arms forward, stopping Luisa. "I'll never miss such an important day."
Luisa let out a relieved sigh, clutching her palms in front of her chest. "You better be!" She threatened him with her finger, holding her side with her other hand.
"She is right." Luisa and Bruno both shuddered as they heard Pepa in the doorway. "If you try to hide inside your tower again, I'll come for you and get you out with brutal force."
"I would never miss such an important day." Bruno groaned, and Tía chuckled at this statement as she walked inside the room and started to reach for something.
"Now Cami would be all alone." She stated, grabbing the diapers from the shield.
Luisa rolled her eyes. "Mirabel." She reminded her, crossing her hands, there was the sound of a ringing baby rattle.
"Well, I'm not sure if she could help with taking care of Camilo." Bruno mentioned it, holding his elbow and slightly shrugging.
Tía Pepa waltzed out of the room with the stuff that she took and disappeared in the doorway for a moment before she took a step back and smiled at Luisa. "By the way, you look great."

***
Luisa stood on the stairs quietly, watching as her Papí and Tío were doing something on the patio.
"Are you good?" Tío Felix asked, tuning the strings in his guitar.
Papí hit the piano keys, listening carefully to the produced sound. "Yes, it's good." He nodded, then stared at Luisa for a second as he noticed her. "Luisita, do you need something?" He waved at her, smiling. Luisa was startled in fright; she didn't expect to be noticed. To Felix turned his head as well to hind her.
"Oh, here's the birthday girl!" He giggled as Luisa went downstairs awkwardly. "Gus, could you believe that she's getting her gift tonight?"
"Do not remind." Papi groaned. "Why are they growing up so fast?"
"I want to be grown up!" Luisa declared, putting her hands on her sides, head up to look at Papí.
"Don't you say that you want to be able to ride on my shoulders?" He asked, squatting down and patting Luisa's head with a quick flip-flop.
Luisa pursed her lips, looking around. Then she finally found an answer. "But if I grow up, I'll give you a ride as well!" She was sure that Papa also wanted a ride but was too scared to ask for it.
Tío Felix burst into a thick bass laugh. "You're the sweetest girl that I ever knew. Well, except for Pepi."
"Thank you, Luisa; I'll look forward to it." Papi chuckled softly, ruffling her hair.
Tío looked at it for a moment, then clicked his teeth as he remembered something. "Dolores was searching for you." He winked conspiratorially.
****
"Can you stop spinning?" Dolores sighed, brushing her hair.
Luisa pursed her lip, fiddling with the golden ribbon in her hand. She really would like to, but she was so excited that she couldn't calm herself down. And all this energy inside her body just begged to find a way out.
"Your hair is so soft," Isabella murmured excitedly, rubbing them with her hands. "You should leave it down!" She stated confidently.
"But I want a bun!" Luisa begged, twisting the ribbon. "It feels good!" She had enough with this uncomfortable dress; she couldn't stand her hair tickling her back in addition to that.
"Maybe we can weave an extra ribbon into your hair?" Dolores asked, bending down to her. Luisa nodded weakly; she wasn't sure if it was a good idea.
"I can't believe how old you are." Isabela put her hand on her forehead dramatically.
"You're older." Luisa snorted, as her hermana was acting like a drama queen.
Isabela gasped in a feigned shock. "Oh no!" She sprang to her feet. "One day I won't be here anymore."
Luisa gasped; she didn't want to be alone. "No, don't leave me!" She jumped up, outstretching her hands toward Isabela.
"Stop scaring her," Dolores muttered, crossing her arms.
"Yes, sure." Isabela rolled her eyes, putting Luisa back in the chair. "Guess I won't die."
Luisa let out a relieved sigh, slightly screaming, when the brush caught on a lump in her hair. "What would my gift be?" She asked, swinging her legs back and forth.
"We'll find out when you open your door." Isabela shrugged, spinning the rose between her fingers.
"I bet it's something cool." Dolores said, starting to braid her hair.
"Pff." Isabela carelessly waved her hand. "Obviously, the second-best hermanita in the world is going to give her the coolest gift." She said it as if it were an obvious statement.
Luisa started to frown, offended. "Why the second?"
Isabela chuckled a little. "Sorry, but Mirabel totally stole my heart." Well, Luisa couldn't blame her in any way.
"Hey, I thought that I was your favorite!" Dolores said jokingly offended.
"K-mon, Dollie," Isabela muttered, shaking her head. "You're already out of this rank; you're my mellizita, not my hermanita.
***
Her door was shining in the evening twilight as Luisa looked at it from the other end of the patio. There were so many people, all staring at her as if she were some kind of strange animal in the zoo. She took a deep breath, clutching a pink flower necklace on her neck, created by Isa, and slightly spinning it as she took the first step. She was so scared, especially after hearing the story of her abuelo. Still, she knew that time was ticking. Casita slightly pushed her forward with a tile. Luisa finally walked to the door, cowering from everyone's gaze. The stairs cracked under her feet.
"Will you use your gift to serve our community?" Abuela asked, bending a little bit.
The candle was so warmly kind, sending confidence down her spine. It was okay. She can do it. Luisa clenched and unclenched her fists a few times before she turned to her luminous door.
A golden glow surrounded her. Spinning in front of her eyes. Luisa felt dizzy, trying to keep an eye on this glitter.
Luisa didn't remember how she lifted the rock, but it was totally weightless. She looked behind her and realized that the image of an older Luisa surrounded by dumbbells and rods was engraved on her door. She looked up at the giant, weightless piece of stone in her arms, then slightly threw it up, gigging.
"We have a new gift!" Abuela announced happily, putting her hand on Luisa's back.
"Here's my little girl!" Papi said proudly, lifting Luisa. She chuckled, wiping her hands around him.
That's when she heard a crack. Papi screamed in pain, dropping Luisa, as Mami rushed to him, already having food in her hand. Luisa froze, biting her lip, and her eyes opened wide. What happened? She looked at her shaking hands. Did she hurt Papa? She gasped, sobbing.
"Thanks, mi amor." Pap let out a relieved breath. "Lu, how are you?"
Luisa took a step back instinctively, arms outstretched to keep her distance. "No, don't come closer!" She cried, shrugging her shoulders in fear. She saw a little bit of fear on his face as he swallowed.
"It's okay; I'm sure you didn't mean it." Mami gave her an assuring smile, stepping closer. Maybe she was right, but Luisa still did. She wanted to protect her family... And now she hurt her papi!
People were gossiping, but she couldn't hear them, clutching to the wall behind her like a cornered prey.
"What about your promise?" Papí reminded her, and Luisa looked up in surprise. "You said that you would give me a ride on your shoulders when you grow up."
Luisa bit her lips, wiping her eyes. Yes, she did it earlier today, but she didn't expect to let it happen so soon. And she was also too afraid to hurt him again. But... what kind of person would she be if she wouldn't do the least thing she could to pay for her mistake? So she took a step forward, bending down.
"O-okay." Her voice trembled. "He just sat here." She just won't touch him."
"Is that okay?" Papi asked worriedly as he put one leg on her shoulder. Luisa nodded quickly, holding back her tears.
Papi had to outstretch his legs because they were touching the floor. Luisa walked forward slowly, scared that she might hurt him if she made any wrong moves. She heard how Papi held his breath, shaking a little bit. Carefully, Luisa slipped off the rectified stairs, getting to the door. People parted, trying to stay away from her. Luisa saw how her hermana clutched her teeth, putting her hand on her chest.
"Is that enough?" Luisa sighed, hoping that this walk would be enough.
"It was the best ride that I ever had," Papi assured her, jumping off her shoulders. Luisa couldn't hold back a laugh when he fell to the floor. For a second, she wanted to give him a hand but stopped in the middle of the movement.
"Hey, can you lift a trolley?" Somebody from the crowd asked, screaming.
"What about bricks?"
"I wonder if you could lift an entire house!"
Luisa giggled unsurely, wiping her wet face. Well, she had to make sure that everyone was having fun tonight. She gently pushed the door, afraid to hurt Casita, and screamed. "Let's go and check my strength!"
And if it was totally okay if everyone stood at least one step away from her,

Growing up wasn't the easiest thing to do, Luisa learned it by herself. But even if she bends and buncles, she still wouldn't breaks.
Encanto junicorn prompts by @aetherdecember
Luisa gasped, jumping off her bed. Her hermana was already up, joyfully rummaging in the closet, trying to find what to wear today. Of course, she couldn't wear anything less than the greatest dress in the whole Encanto for today. Their prima-hermana groaned something, covering her ears with a pillow. Dolores was such a sleepy. Luisa giggled, pulling her by the sleeve. Dolores wiped her eyes, yawning.

"Morning, Lu." She sighed and finally turned to lie on her back. "You're so happy."

The little girl smiled, but before she could explain what was happening, Isabela ran to Dolores, almost knocking Luisa off her path. "It's my gift ceremony!" She jumped on their prima's bed and screamed so loudly that Luisa covered her ears. Isabela shook Dolores by the shoulders, getting her to a sitting position.

"Happy birthday!" She announced it happily, hugging Isabela, and tossing her messy hair back. Dolores's hair was very curly, even curlier than Luisa's. It was especially in contrast with her hermana's straight hair. Luisa really wondered, how Isabela always managed to have such a neat hairstyle, perfect just like she was. She told that it was a magic power that only hermanas mayores could have.
"Let's go!" Luisa threw her hands into the air, pulling the older girls to the door. She couldn't wait to see what was going on today.
Abuela walked in with a soft smile, directed at Isabela. The birthday girl immediately straightened up, raising her chin like a soldier. "Good morning, Isa." Abuela bent and put her hand on Isabela's shoulders. "You're grown up so much! You're almost adult!" There was some sort of weak sadness in her tone that Luisa couldn't understand.
***

Luisa was so excited by this! She had never seen a gift ceremony before! Abuela said that it meant that Isabela was a big girl now and could help in the town just like Mama. Isa was so lucky; it was the best birthday present ever!

Today was very fun! Everyone was running around, carrying something, and trying to decorate the patio. Luisa even helped carry the holiday flags; they weren't even heavy, and carrying them was cool; she waved them as she marched across the room. Then she helped Mama knead the dough for the birthday cake, not forgetting to lick the spoon. Mami chuckled, covering her mouth with her fist, as she looked at the splattered dough on the table. Luisa might be the youngest in the family, but she would do anything she could to help on such an important day! But as time passed, there were fewer chores for Luisa to do, until she found herself completely bored.

Time was passing so slowly, and it excited her so much that she just couldn't wait to see how Isabela would use her bright new gift. But Papí said that they have to wait. How long?! Until tomorrow? She wasn't even sure what to do. Normally, Luisa would go and play outside, but she didn't want to miss the gift ceremony! And everyone was so busy, focusing on preparations, so there wasn't anyone to play with. Tío Bruno and Dolores seemed to have more free time than others, but both of them liked to sit still and do some nerdy things, while Luisa preferred to run around and discover the world. Tío Pepa was the funniest adult, but she was busy like everyone else. So Luisa was looking at the first floor through the fence, trying to understand what everyone was doing.

The patio was crowded, there were many people that Luisa saw in the village, a loud noise of foot-stomping, whisperings and awfully sounded creaking table legs were everywhere. It was pretty loud, Dolores probably would like it, she always existed to overhear a conversation. Casita was moving seats around. A small lamp blew into Luisa's head. What if she could use it to run without actually leaving the casita?

"Casita can run." Luisa begged the house Soon, the tiles under her feet started to move, slowly getting faster. Luisa was gigging as she tried to stand with a rhythm. Soon, she leaned against the fence, feeling that she was out of breath.

"Oh, here you are." Mami smiled, picking Luisa up. "It's time to go."

"Gift?" Luisa asked enthusiastically, trembling her hands in the air. She'll finally see how Isabela uses her powers! What's her gift? Luisa wanted to know already and wondered why they hadn't told her already. On the other hand, it probably would not be so exciting if she knew the results from the very beginning.

***

Luisa looked at her hermana at the end of the corridor. Her white dress was so shiny, and two well-made pigtails were falling on her chest. She held the hem of her dress, carefully stepping on the red tiles that led to the stairs. Dolores wrapped her arms around Luisa, pulling her closer. Was prima just as enchanted as she is? Tío Bruno was squatting, resting his chin on Dolores's head. Tía Pepa and Tío Felix wrapped their hands around Bruno's back. Mami and Papi were at the door, holding hands, as Isabela was walking upstairs. The silence was so tense that Luisa pursed her lips, looking at the door.

She was startled when the room flashed in the golden glow of the door. Isabela looked surprised, waving her hands at everyone, and then a small flower path grew in front of her. She winced and twisted her hand, creating a bouquet of sweet pink flowers. Isa's gift was so cool! Luisa shouted out happily, clapping her hands; everyone seemed so happy!

"Hey, it's time to see Isabela's room!" Tío Felix announced, pulling Bruno forward, Luisa beamed and rushed before everyone, wanting to see the cool new room as fast as it was possible.

Isabela's place was full of flowers in every shade of pink or lilac. Of course, it was Isa's favorite color; she always wore the same colored dress. She looked around, waving her hands to create even more beautiful plants. And Abuela looked so happy; she was staring at Isabela with such adoration that Luisa never saw it. Was it because of the flowers? She couldn't wait to have her gift; she would make Abuela so proud! Why should they receive gifts so late? Five years old is such an old age! (Don't tell this to Isabela.)

"Wo-ho!" Dolores swirled around the room, straightening her flower-covered skirt. Did Isabela do this?
Luisa pursed her lips and stamped her foot, getting her hermana's attention. "I want a flower dress!" Isabela giggled, covering her mouth with a palm, then turned around on her axis. Luisa winced when the buds swirled in a virge around her. She closed her eyes and sneezed. As she was about to wipe her face, she realized that her whole cloth was covered in pink roses. "Thank you!" She screamed, waving at Isabela, who already was creating beauty for another girl.

Abuela decided to make a picture, and Luisa couldn't be happier than now. Her hermana was standing in the middle with a freshly made flower crown, hugging Luisa, who was standing to her right, covered in pollen. Dolores was standing on the other side, holding hands with Isabela in their special way, Luisa often saw them doing it, and her hermanas said that it was a special twin gesture. She wondered if mami and tios had their own special way of holding hands. Grownups were standing behind them, Luisa saw with her side eye how Abuela bent a little, standing right behind Isabela, other adults were behind them.

"La Familia Madri..." Luisa sneezed when the pollen got into her nose, so they had to retake the picture because it should be perfect. A perfect photo for a perfect ceremony

It was a really fun night; people were dancing. Luisa tried some moves too but was soon distracted by the hanging vines that Isa created. She tried to climb one of them but ended up falling into a bunch of petals. Some of the flowers from her skirt were ripped off, ending up being forgotten in the pile. Isabela looked at her with a little grin, standing on the right hand of Abuela, showing her new abilities to everyone.

Luisa didn't remember how she fell asleep and was taken to bed, but she couldn't wait to bloom just like Isabela did.

Chapter 2. Whimsical
When Dolores first said that Mami and Tía have a second heart beating inside of them, Luisa was very surprised; she didn't know that you could grow a second heart. Did it mean that one day she would have a second heart too? And Papi and Tío looked so happy like it was a real celebration, so Luisa guessed that it was a good thing to do. Only by the evening had Mami stood up by the table edge, announcing with a happy smile and slightly patting her stomach. "I and Pepa are pregnant!"
Luisa bit her lip, looking at Isabela, who was very happy, then bent to her and asked, whispering. "What does it mean?"
"We'll have a little sibling and cousin." Her hermana explained.
Luisa beamed and screamed way louder than she intended to. "I'll have a little brother?"
Papi chuckled, ruffling her hair. "Or sister."
Luisa crossed her arms, nodding confidently as she explained. "It can't be a girl; Mama already has two." If two kids are girls, the third should be the other way around. Otherwise, why would Tío Bruno be a boy? On the other hand, there was also Dolores. Luisa gasped, lifting her shoulders a little bit. "If Isa and Dolores are girls, does that mean that I'm a boy?" She pressed her palms to her cheeks in surprise, then sobbed when tears appeared in her eyes. "I don't want to be one!"
Grownups seemed surprised by this logic, immediately assuring that being a boy or girl didn't depend on the number of birth. Luisa thought that it made no sense but decided to let it be.
Soon, life had a completely new turn, things were changing without any time to proceed them. Tía Pepa was stormy most of the time; Luisa could swear that it was almost a hurricane a dozen times, and it meant that Luisa had to sit at home, which was extremely boring. And she didn't use to spend her day inside. Honestly, she was already annoyed by her future primo; why must they make Tía so emotional?
Mami was okay most of the time, but when hormones got to her too... Let's just say that being near two of them was dangerous for life.
At those moments, Luisa was hiding in her prima's room along with Isabela. Mostly because it was soundproofed. But, honestly, she was a bit scared of being in here.
Dolores's room was the quietest place in the whole Encanto, but at the same time, it was louder than anywhere else. Heartbeating, breathing, whispering of spikelets, rustling sheets — it all was screaming so much, bending the fear over Luisa.
"I miss going outside." She whispered, tapping her foot, as the stone bounced off the water, splashing it around. Tía had a bad mood for almost a week, and now it was dangerous to not only go outside but to even stay outside of the protected magic room.
"You have a whole field with a river in here." Isabela sighed, crossing her arms.
"It's not the same." Luisa mummed, offended. Yes, Prima's room was cool, but it just wasn't enough. Luisa felt like it was too flat. Yes, she could run, but there were many other things to do. Like climbing trees, that wasn't there. And she missed her family too. Mamí and Tía were so mad, Luisa thought that they wanted babies. But now they just seemed to hate everything that was going on with this pregnancy. At the same time, Papí and Tío Felix were trying their best to prevent their wives from killing each other; at least Tío Bruno explained it like this. Was it normal to want to kill your sister when you are pregnant?
Luisa's fourth birthday was such a mess. Mami wanted to celebrate it like any other birthday, which made Luisa so happy. For some time, she was really scared that they wouldn't celebrate her birthday because of some stupid fight again. Well, there was another stupid fight that day. Besides, Mama was getting tired so easily that she barely started to make a cake until she fell into the armchair, resting her head on the back of it with tired breathing.
"Don't worry, Mi Amor." Luisa heard how Papi was calming Mami down, just when Luisa thought about the cake. "I'll handle it."
"I want to help too!" Isabela interrupted him. "I want to give my hermanita the best birthday cake!" She held her hands behind her back, looking up at their dad. Luisa shouted out in happiness, rushing to Isabela and almost knocking her off her feet as she pulled her into a hug. Isabela giggled awkwardly, slightly patting Luisa's spine. "Everything for my small hermanita." She promised.
Luisa looked away, pursing her lips in the offense. "I'm almost grown up! I'll be five in the next year."
Just a year to go before she would have her gift. Luisa couldn't wait to finally have it. On the other hand, it was probably good that she wouldn't have her ceremony this year. Luisa could only imagine what would happen if she got her gift while Mami or Tia were pregnant; what if Pepa would blow everyone away with the wind; or if Mami accidentally mixed up the recipes? The main goal is for the two of them to stop waiting for the babies before Well, Mama promised that her hermanito would be born before Isabela's birthday.
"But it's not now. And even then, you'll still be my  baby Hermanita. Isabela giggled as Luisa knocked her to the floor. "I bet even our hermanitos will be taller than you!" Luisa crossed her arms, looking away resentfully, chin up a little. Isabela wasn't even that tall compared to her.
"Quiet there, girls." Papi let out a short snort as he stood on the chair to reach for something on the top shelf. "Let's not fiii...." His voice was cut off by a gasp as he bent too much, off-balancing, forcing him to fall on the floor. Luisa winced as she heard a thump. "I'm fine."
***
Luisa thought that her primito was strange. He was so small; Luisa never thought that people could be so little. And he was sleeping most of the time; Luisa found it quite boring. Didn't he want to discover this giant world around him? Most of the time he was either crying or sleeping. How did he even manage to keep so many tears? But it didn't diminish how cute he was. especially when he wasn't crying, waking Luisa up in the middle of the night. Seriously, Camilo, the night is time for sleep, not everyone could dream during the day like you!
Now Luisa couldn't wait to see her own little sibling. Sure, Camilo was cool. But she wanted to become a hermana mayor officially. Now she was the only girl in this family without a younger sibling. Days seemed to be passing so slowly... How long has she to wait? Her hermanito should already be born. Tío Felix said that Camilo was born earlier than he was supposed to be. God, why couldn't the other child be born early as well?
***
Luisa couldn't wait to hide in the sound-proofed room again. She ran all over the field, waving her hands, trying to get distracted from these thoughts. Soon she will meet her baby hermanito! This room was too small for Luisa, but she couldn't leave the casita. The closer she is to Mama, the faster she will meet the newest member of the family! And leaving was scary. Mami kept screaming, and from this noise, Luisa wanted to cry when heard it, but she didn't want to scare a newborn with her sobbing and tears.
"Isa, Lu, it's time." Papi's voice was as loud as thunder, echoing inside the room.
Luisa shuddered, then turned around and looked at Papa, who was standing in the doorway. Then she and her hermana stared at each other for a bit and both rushed forward, pushing each other to be the first one.
"I'm older!"
"And it's my first hermanito!"
****
Luisa gasped, pressing her hands to her cheeks and looking at her hermanita. She was so whimsically tiny—even smaller than Camilo. Luisa jumped on Mama's bed and clung to her hand to see the little girl better. Hermanita was sniffling softly, eyes closed.
"Meet our little Mirabel." Mami chuckled, ruffling Luisa's hair with her free hand.
Mirabel. It was such a beautiful name! Luisa took her skinny arm carefully, smiling widely. Now she has officially stopped being the youngest child.
Also, when Isabela said that the older siblings always have perfectly straight hair, she was totally lying. At least Luisa hadn't noticed any changes by now.
***
Little kids were strange. Luisa could confirm it. As a good older hermana, she made sure to take care of Mirabel, especially after she moved to nursery as well. Having company all day reminded Luisa about times when Isabela and Dolores lived here as well before getting their own doors. But her primo and hermanita were both too small and couldn't play with her. But it was okay; they'll grow up soon, and Luisa and her older hermanas would have other kids to play with!
So, right now she was trying her best to take care of Mirabel, even if most of the time it meant that she had to run for mami in the middle of the night because she couldn't calm down her hermanita. Luisa thought that it was unfair; after all, she was doing her best to help. What exactly is Mia different from her? On the other hand, it was the third child for Mami, the fifth if you count Tíos, so maybe she just was more experienced than Luisa.
Mirabel had big, curious eyes that were looking around carefully, trying to understand the world around her. She seemed to be way quieter than Camilo, but when he started to cry, they didn't have to wait long for Mira to join him. Was all of the baby talk that loud?
When Luisa asked Isabela about it, she just shrugged, pursing her lips. "I don't remember you or Dollie as babies." Both of them looked at the crib, where Mirabel was snoring in her sleep.
That day, the Club of Hermanas Mayores was officially created. The three older girls were talking about caring for Mirabel or Camilo. Luisa also spent a lot of time, trying to understand those two, which was uneasy because of how strange they were. Like, who could spend all day lying either in cribs or in mom's hands? Or why weren't two of them able to eat normal food? Sure, they didn't have teeth, but they surely could eat something like a puree. But when Luisa tried to feed Mirabel, her padres became so scared and said that she can't eat anything, except for milk. And she could drink only a special kind of milk.
So, yeah, babies were whimsical.

Part 4. Adventure
"What are you doing?" Luisa winced as she heard her hermanita's voice behind her. She turned around, placing the donkey that she was carrying right now on the ground.

"Nothing special, just catching the runaway donkey." Luisa smiled at her hermanita, reaching to ruffle her hair. Mirabel slightly crouched, letting out an awkward chuckle. "What about you? Shouldn't you be with Mami?"

The young girl put her hands on her sides proudly as she explained, holding out a picnic basket. "I want to be a big girl, and mami asked me to find ushun in the forest! And she told me to get you." She was speaking so fast that Luisa missed the half of the speech.

"Do you need my help?" She bent a little to pat Mirabel's head. "Give me a minute." She grabbed the donkey again, running quickly to the barn to leave it there. Luisa was so fast that her hermanita couldn't catch up with her until she stopped by the old wooden building.

"O-oof." Mirabel exhaled, bending a little, and sweat drops appeared on her forehead.

"You could just wait for me." Luisa said worriedly, kneeling to be one height with her hermanita, and quickly fixing her glasses that were slightly off.

She looked at Luisa like she had just gotten offended personally, biting her lip. Luisa sighed, lifting her up as if she were a kitten. "Lead the way!" Luisa smiled at her, putting her hermanita on her shoulders.

Mirabel burst into laughter, and soon Luisa bent, clutching her belly in a wild giggle. "Run!" Her hermanita commanded, so Luisa jumped forward.

She knew that those golden berries were just by the edges of the wooded area, but grownups are usually forbidden to go on there by themselves. Encanto might be a town where everybody is sure that no one ever thinks about anything bad. (Especially when one certain little girl could hear everything.) But the forest was full of wild nature and predatory animals with their sharp teeth and claws. So being nearby was dangerous, and Luisa didn't think that she or her Hermanitas ever were in here before Luisa got her gift.

"We're here!" Luisa shuddered at Mirabel's scream. She stretched out her hand, pointing at the shimmering golden glimpses in the foliage.

Luisa grinned, leaning slightly, ready to take off. "You have to tighten your grip!" She advised two seconds before taking off with all her inhuman speed. Two of them almost ran into the bushes, but Luisa braked at the last moment, slamming her feet into the ground. The basket hit the grass.

"It was fast." Mirabel muttered, shaking a little bit. Luisa caught her just as she was about to fall.

"Quiet there." Luisa smiled, putting Hermanita on her feet. Mirabel giggled, wiping her face, still slightly staggering. She squatted down to pick up the basket of berries, then quickly disappeared between the thin twigs. Luisa had to push the bushes to crawl through them and make sure that Mira was doing okay; she was pretty tall and buff for her age. In fact, she's already outgrowned Isabela, much to her discontent, even though she kept insisting that it was just a sudden growth spurt and that she would be taller than Luisa again in a few months. But Isabela had to grow really tall for that because Tío Bruno had a really important mission for Luisa.

"I can't let Pepa be the tallest biological Madrigal." He explained once when it became clear that Luisa was the tallest grandchild right now. "I'll buy you an ice cream for every centimeter above her height."

And Luisa wanted to have an ice cream or two, so she immediately promised to be the tallest one.

Anyway, right now she has to watch over Mirabel. The mentioned kid was looking through the greenery to find more ushun berries in here.

"Can we look around the jungle?" Mirabel suddenly moved her face to look at Luisa with a begging expression. She swallowed, looking away.

"It could be dangerous." Luisa pursed her lips, holding her elbow. She wanted to see a deeper part of the forest too, but Mirabel was too young for that. Something might go wrong.

"Please!" These big, innocent eyes were staring at Luisa's soul. Well, it's no surprise that Mirabel was Abuela's favorite, stealing that place from Isa.

Luisa sighed, taking Mirabel's hand. "Don't let go of me." Then I thought a bit and added. "Dolores, don't tell mamí." I'll make you a milkshake." It's not like Luisa knew the recipe, but she could ask mamí for one.

The leaves were rustling under their feet. Somewhere nearby, the water in the river was murmuring. Oh, by the way, Luisa had to reroute it soon. She led Mirabel to the sound, stopping at the edge of the coast.

Mirabel beamed, quickly taking off her shoes and trying to jump in the quiet flow of water, stopping in the air with Luisa's heavy hand. "Be careful," she sighed, letting Mira a bit down to touch the water but not the bottom of the river.

"Sorry." She gigged. "Can we go down with it?"

Luisa shrugged. "Why not?" They had to return in the same way, so it wasn't really important where they went.

They weren't really far away from the field, so very soon they weren't walking between the trees.

Luisa couldn't help but roll her eyes as she saw how one of Señor Rendon's donkeys was nibbling grass nearby. Again... Didn't she collect them like... twenty minutes ago?"

Mirabel pulled her sleeve to get her attention. "The donkeys look like unicorns."

"Well, I heard that donkeys and horses look alike." Luisa explained, she actually read it in the book. Technically, she couldn't prove it for real since horses weren't living in Encanto, but according to images, it was true. "And a unicorn is a horse with a horn."

"Why are there no unicorn donkeys?" Mirabel crossed her arms. "I bet they would like to be one."

Luisa giggled, putting her hands on her sides. "You're right!" She exclaimed confidently. "We have to invent a unicorn-donkey." She scratched her head in thought. "A donkey with a corn..."

"A donkey-corn!" Mirabel exclaimed happily, throwing her hands in the air, making some of the berries fall out of the basket in her palm.

Donkeycorn? It seems like a good idea!
