Hilo and Anden from Jade City. Through the entire trilogy I just love how their family relationship is, highs and lows. Also consider the first time we see them interact Anden already knows to take off his glasses cos Hilo is gonna really fight him for a “joke”. They’re both messed up…
I couldn’t resist teen Anden with floppy hair no one’s told him to cut in a while…

Jade City - Fonda Lee
5/5 - Irresistible world-building, politics (national and gang), intrigue, family tension, everything you could want out of an urban fantasy. MAJOR spoilers below!
Jade City is the first novel in the Green Bone saga and it is deliciously well-written. Character voices are distinct, the mistakes they make are realistic, and even when I didn't like some of the main characters or the actions they were taking, I wanted them to succeed. I was emotionally invested in the outcome of every character's fate, from the secondary characters to the Pillar of the clan, Kaul Lan. Sometimes this did mean I was invested in watching them fail (Bero) but I was invested nevertheless!
The world-building within the novel was incredibly rich. The "magic" system of jade is a very hard magic system but I really enjoyed how effortlessly it was woven into everyday life. Lee takes the time to mention, in an offhand fashion, details about Kekon and the greater world that make it that much easier to fully sink into the world she's built. I read this entire book in one long sitting.
Kekon itself really reminded me of the Philippines. The Kekonese war for independence was with Espenia (Spain) and overall the positioning of Kekon on the global stage is really reminiscent of how formerly colonized nations have to act in our global geopolitics. That said, my interpretation did mean that I don't really jive with a lot of the fanart of Lan, Hilo, and Shae. In my mind, they all have darker skin and a lot of the fanart has them pretty pale (like k-pop idol pale).
I also loved that this book took place over a realistic timeline. Weeks would go by in a few sentences before we'd get a fleshed out scene because Lee understands we don't need to see the minutia of day-to-day life. It also means that the characters were aging, falling in love, graduating school, etc. at a normal rate. There was no instantaneous love, no "I'm better than everyone else and do this without schooling" and this was, for me, really refreshing (especially after reading the All Souls Trilogy, which suffers from this).
The twist with the death of Lan was truly something I never saw coming. Up until, and even after, the point where he falls into the harbor, I was convinced that he would make it. He was so confident, so level-headed, and everyone relied on him so much that, in my head, his death never entered the realm of possibility. And thus I fell into the same trap as the other characters. Scrumptious writing here.
By far my favorite characters are Shae and Anden. They both have internal struggles with their heritage that are realistic and heartbreaking at times. Even when they make mistakes and are rightfully called out for it in other perspectives, I still have such a soft spot for the position they're both put in. It makes sense that they're also close in the book. Plus, seeing Anden struggle with wanting to come out as gay but being nervous about it and ultimately being accepted without conditions, hesitations, or reservations was really heartwarming.
Overall, this book is the combination of urban fantasy, the Godfather, and the Shanghai/Hong Kong gangster movies from the 80s. I would recommend those who love fantasy and thrillers alike, it's a amazing entry into the trilogy.

The innate potential drama of late-jade legacy Anden and Lott never addressing their personal history while constantly being stuck in the same Kaul family circles. The academy fight and rejection that they never talk about again. The slight discomfort and avoidance. The resentment that arises from remembering their teenage years and remembering that the other remembers their teenage years. Lott essentially being an honorary Kaul as the Horn who seems to have a good relationship with Anden's siblings, niece and nephew but a distant one with Anden himself. That he now lives right next door to most of Anden's family on the same estate and they all see each other regularly. The fact at least one family member knows Anden used to have a thing for him once upon a time. How Lott and Jirhuya must see each often enough when Anden brings him along to family events and we can only guess what they think of each other. Just WHAT am I supposed to do with this except imagine how awkward that very first family dinner must have been like for the both them

honestly at this point i feel like i don’t even care if anden/lott becomes endgame in the sequel we’re never going to get i just want my boys to be comfortable with each other. i want them to talk. i want them to have just one candid conversation about what happened in the past, what’s happening in the present, and how they want to proceed in the future. whether that’s becoming friends, staying polite acquaintances, or maybe becoming something more. but they need to talk. anden mentions in one chapter that he’s not quite sure if they’re friends. and sometimes that’s ok! sometimes it’s ok not to define things. but when you’re two of the pillar’s closest advisors and are frequently in the same room together, that type of ambiguity is unsustainable. you need to draw boundaries. you need to know who you are to this other person and who that other person is to you.
clearly they’re drawn to each other. anden thinks about lott in like 75% of his pov chapters. we never really get a lott chapter so who knows what’s going on in his mind, but he keeps asking anden whether or not he regrets his choices. clearly anden occupies at least some brain space in lott’s mind. and they don’t know what to do about this. i’m not sure if they ever even acknowledge that they think about the other.
lott clearly holds himself at a distance, and anden’s too embarrassed to bring up their awkward teenage years, and so they’ve never had a conversation that’s run more than surface deep. they don’t know what they are, and so they’re always left wondering, not knowing how they should be acting around each other, or how to proceed into the future. but it’s so clear that they think about each other and i want them to acknowledge that. and i want them to be comfortable with each other, so that they can move on and be free of these burdens and questions. and they can’t be comfortable around each other until they talk about their relationship.
honestly, i want them to be friends.
but if not friends, then i want them to at least acknowledge that something between them existed -- that spark of interest in each other, even if it won’t continue in the future.
they are both such lonely people and i just want them to know that at some point the other thought of them, that someone out there thinks of them and cares about them.

JADE LEGACY SPOILERS
I’m fine but then I remember that Hilo repeatedly used to cheat on Wen in the beginning of JL and my stomach actually churns.
Wen sacrificed a lot for him and for the clan. She literally died and came back to life for what she thought was right and Hilo acted like he was the victim! I honestly don’t get that!

Jade War - Fonda Lee
5/5 - More ambitious than the first, expands on international geopolitics, characters really start coming into their own
SPOILERS!
We jump back into the Green Bone saga to find time passing as it should. It jumps around a little bit more in this book, skipping months at a time instead of weeks, as in the first, but this makes sense for the type of conflict developing. The two clans, realizing they can't continue their battle in the streets without losing their civilian base, start fighting in other ways (propaganda, influence on national politics, (il)legal operations to increase their funding). This fundamentally changes how the book operates. I struggled with the change a bit at first because it's so much more cerebral and it plays out kind of like a chess game (I have never been good at chess). Thankfully though, the other characters also struggle to change their ways of thinking and prepare for all eventualities. All actions have consequences, including actions the characters took years in the past. Every detail still matters.
Meanwhile, we see Anden get sent to Espenia because he refuses to become a Green Bone. As he is one of my two favorite characters, the fact that he's depressed for a lot of this book made me quite sad. But the way he handles himself, developing relationships with the Port Massey Green Bones and fostering a relationship with the Pillar's son, are critical to his character development. From the beginning, there's this underlying current asking if Anden can really step out/away from clan life. Will he be independent? Does he want to be outside of the family in that way? And when he finally answers no, it's like the natural conclusion of what happens and all the more satisfying because he's really thought about it and considered all his options.
Shae's plotlines made me really proud of her and also really sad for her. She struggles with finding love and connection as the Weatherman of the clan and, on some level, as a woman who is more accomplished and smarter than most of the men that she interacts with. Her past with Espenia comes back to bite her, but you have to be proud of how she handles herself. She lost the duel (barely) but retains her dignity.
Hilo, on the other hand, has never been my favorite character and his actions in this book cemented that status for me. All of his actions are in character, but they're also infuriating. The ending of the story, with Wen near death and Anden putting on jade again, was thrilling in the extreme. Again, Hilo's response is completely in character, but again, infuriating. More on that in the next book because that's where this one ends.
The international geopolitics that Lee writes in here are just fabulous. the fact that it's a world undergoing globalization is integral to the plot, and the national politics of Kekon are of direct interest and have power over the main characters and antagonists. I strongly disliked Espenia for a lot of the book, but it's a former colonial power so what did I expect, really. I know that technically the Mountain is an antagonist because they are in opposition to our protagonists' goals, but its hard to dislike an entity when you know they're also trying to do what's right for their people. I might not agree with their methods but I can respect and understand their motivations.
An ideal sequel that might surpass the first book in my eyes. It's got everything the first delivers and more.
