(transcript under the cut)
Episode 2 | Previous | Next
So excited to be back with this series. Episodes 3-5 are going to be a bit shorter than usual, but only because I'm in the process of planning a huge slate of parties, plot-changing events, etc. for summer break. Can't wait to share what I've cooked up with you! No additional parts to this episode, so I'll be back with episode 4 as soon as I finish editing my screenshots.
Episode 3: Suddenly Summer
Scene 1 - 28 Windslar
Irving (narrating a montage of the Brookestone-Walker household enjoying the first few days of summer): I hate summer. Okay, maybe that’s a little strong.
I like that, instead of pacing around in the house because rainstorms have flooded her usual trails, Chloe can go for her morning runs. I like that everyone in the house seems to be happier than in the spring, when the six of us first moved in.
(Cut to a political protest in San Myshuno)
Miki Ojo: What do we want?
Yuki Kuma: A living wage!
Miki: When do we want it?
Josh: Now!
(Cut back to Wes and Morgan making out in her apartment building)
Irving: I like that Josh and Wes have found actual hobbies instead of fighting about who gets to use the household computer (it’s mine). Although I’m not sure you can call what Wes gets up to a “hobby”. (He sneaks into the house at 1AM smelling like weed and cat dander.)
But aside from the awful heat—who knew Germany could get as hot as Willow Creek?—and prom fever at school, summer means I can’t keep avoiding my biggest irritation: Dr. Crêpes.
Scene 2 - Willow Creek Library
Irving: I don’t even know why I have to be here. I’m doing fine in school. Principal Prescott says I’m a shoo-in for valedictorian next year.
Dr. Crêpes: That’s great, Lindsey!
Irving: Irving. Everyone calls me that.
Dr. Crêpes: Right. Irving. (coughs) Child services recommended that I talk to you weekly to make sure you’re settling in well at your foster home. Now that school’s about to let out, it’s important that you receive all the help you need to remain your best self in the summer.
Irving: What if I don’t need any help?
Dr. Crêpes: Well—
Irving: No, seriously. I was told after my diagnosis that nothing had to change. That I’m fine just the way I am. That I get to define what autism means to me.
Dr. Crêpes: That’s absolutely true, Irving. Don’t get me wrong—I’m not here to upend your life. Think of me as a listening ear for whenever life stresses you out.
Irving (unconvinced): …
Dr. Crêpes: Unless you’re one of the lucky people who never get stressed out, in which case I totally envy you.
Irving: I did not say that.
Dr. Crêpes: Well, then, I’d love to hear anything you’re willing to share.
Irving: You promise not to tell anyone? Not even Audreyanna or Evelyn?
Dr. Crêpes: Therapist’s promise.
Scene 3 - Magnolia Park, Willow Creek
[Invited guests: Mila and Wolfgang Metzinger (aka Munch), Rani Anglond, Marissa Collins, Joy Jentanon, Cassandra Gótico (aka Goth), Morgan Landings (aka Fyres), Gene and Matt Whitmore (latter is @aashwarr's original character and won't be shown on-screen/quoted in these screenshots.]
Irving: Fine. Therapy wasn’t all that bad. And neither was the picnic our foster moms threw to celebrate the beginning of summer. I was surprised to see how many friends the other foster kids invited. I sure didn’t have anyone to invite. Not that I minded.
Cassandra (introducing Matt to Irving and Josh): Hey, Irving, come say hi to Matt. He says you’re in the same computer club.
Irving (cloudgazing): No, thanks. I’m trying to find video game characters in the clouds.
Joy (walking up to them): Aren’t you that guy who wrote that political op-ed in the school paper last week?
Josh: Am I?
Joy: Of course you are. I’m never wrong about these things. Josh, right?
Josh: Maybe. And you are...?
Joy: Joy. Chloe invited me. Your foster moms seem cool.
Josh: I’ll pass along the compliment. Didn’t think anyone actually read the paper. You into politics?
Joy: Very. I like to keep on top of things.
Josh: Well, Joy, it’s a pleasure to make your acquaintance.
Joy (smirking): Spare me. I hated your take.

i could barely make it through eliza panels/interviews back in the day(though that was more because i hated how shallow and basic her understanding of clarke's character was😭) so i cant image how terrible and cringe they are nowadays where she's basically pandering to those that live vicariously through her/her relationship in order to try and gain some validation for some noncanon ship
Blegh yeah listen if I knew that the people I was pandering to where using my irl relationship as a vehicle for validating their fictional ship, I would want to vomit. It wouldn't even matter if it was canon or not - altho highkey it not being canon and them using that as some sort of "winning" mentality would feel even grosser. But she feeds into it 🤨 they both do. It's so weird
And I mean. At least she used to be funny? Like yes she was never one for much introspection on her character. You could always tell she mostly just showed up and read the lines, which is fine! I don't think an actor has to throw their entire pussy into a role just to make it good and heartfelt and believable. But what was nice about her for years was that she was funny and she supported canon for what actually happened, and she didn't actively try and rewrite history. Even when she was at her peak Clexa era, she only ever said shit that was echoed in the show and by Jason. She just vibed and made stupid vines and that was fine.
Now tho. Whew. Girlie pop is just a straight up liar. Which I suppose she probably always was, but even her non-blarke bullshit is just stale and boring. Lifeless. Dead behind the eyes. Bizarre considering this is the same woman who once drunkenly invited fans to come have (... croissants? Crepes? Waffles? I can't remember now) with her

June 16 - Arashiyama Bamboo forest
Today I woke up feeling less adventurous than I did yesterday so I was back to my family mart breakfast today. We then went to the Arashiyama bamboo forest we also stopped by a love shrine where I got a fortune which was "excellent" and said I will have good luck so that's nice. The scenery around the forrest was very beautiful and we took ample photos in front of the mountains. After our mini photo shoot we then went to get lunch. Julie and I went to a sushi restaurant which Raj and Vishnu were also going to eat at before deciding that sushi was not filling enough. Unfortunately for them, the sushi was actually very good and might be tied for best I've had in Japan. After sushi of course we needed a sweet treat and I was finally able to try a crepe which for one reason of another I hadn't gotten to try yet. It was worth the hype. We then hiked up the mountain as a class to see the monkeys. The hike was very hot and not the easiest walk we've done but it was probably worth the view. The monkeys were definitely cool to see albeit smelly and slightly aggressive. We then hiked back down the mountain to go to a cafe that Sam wanted to try. The cafe's atmosphere was very nice and we were able to seat a fairly large group although some were underwhelmed with the drinks. Eliza and I both agreed that the scones were very good too. We then headed back to the hotel to recover from our trek and later we ended up playing uno (I finally won one single game).

Academic Reflection
Japan's forests are rather well conserved due to the fact that they have been increasingly important to local identity and they are of public interest. Not only do tourists appreciate the natural landscapes but there are also symbolic meanings of natural elements in Japan. However, protection of forests in Japan has not always been ideal since in the past the conservation of forests have been tied to national and municipal regulations which sometimes caused dramatic changes to the landscape from interventions that were too strict. The Arashiyama forest which we visited originated from a mass planting of cherry blossom trees in 1255 by Emperor Kameyama. It then became the first example of public forest landscape management in Japan and the management has been quite successful.
We also saw the Nonomiya Shrine in Arashiyama. This shrine is primarily used by those wishing for improved luck in love and marriage. The shrine is featured in the tale of Genji as lady Rokujo goes there after Genji grows cold to her. It is traditional that unmarried royal women go there in order to bring offerings to undergo purification rituals before getting married. The shrine was also intended to be temporary so it has a very rustic feel with torii made from rough logs and a very small unceremonious appearance.

June 10th - Kinkakuji/Daitokuji
Tumblr media
Today I learned that there is some beauty in suffering. I woke up early at 6:55, got ready, and headed down for Japanese breakfast at 7:30. I wasn’t supposed to have Japanese breakfast today, but today is one of the last days we will be served it, so I grabbed some anyways. After chit chatting for a long time, we did a quiz and then headed down for class. After having some troubles at the bus stop, we headed to the Golden Temple, which was covered in gold foil. It was a nice stroll, but the temple was not that grand in stature. I had a creme brûlée crepe and mango shake for lunch and then we reconvened to head to Daitokuji, which might be my favorite temple/shrine so far, along with the Meiji Shrine. We toured beautiful and meaningful zen gardens, met with the head priest, and got his signature on some memorabilia. He wrote a beautiful quote when his confidence was down which said, “if I can’t endure today, where and when will I?”. I found that so meaningful and hard. Some of us went thrifting after and I copped a beautiful, white cable knit sweater (similar to one that my dad has). Nico, Sam, Xander, Vishnu, Eliza, and I attended an hour of meditation at the Daitokuji temple with a Buddhist priest. We sat criss-cross style on the floor for one hour, which was really uncomfortable because I’m not flexible at all. The priest would slap your back with a stick to give you relief, which was really scary. I got slapped twice. Other than that, I sat, staring at the beautiful zen garden, with my mind completely empty. It was a beautiful ceremony that was followed with a traditional tea ceremony, which was yummy.
Academic reflection
The Zen Garden reading written by Matsuchika discussed the recent controversy surrounding Zen gardens and whether or not they are true products of Zen philosophy or if they are commercial endeavors begun by Buddhist temples following the Second World War. I believe that they are not in fact commercial endeavors started by Buddhist monks, but rather beautiful cultural practices that have been in place for centuries. The rock garden at the Daitokuji temple has been there for dozens of decades and had a deep significance rooted within Zen philosophy such as each stream of rocks represented people’s lives and that rocks and trees represented obstacles in the way. There were many obstacles early on in life during adolescence, in which most people are beginning to learn the foundations of life and towards the end, there was nothing except two large mountains of rocks that represented the path toward enlightenment. The reading tries to argue that the term “Zen garden” had not been used in Japanese literature until the 1930s, so therefore the entire concept was slightly irrelevant. However, I disagree with this sentiment because, as we saw that today, the rock garden at Daitokuji temple has deep roots in Zen philosophy, and meditations are practiced and traditions have been maintained for hundreds of years, no matter the difference in terminology.
