This is the silliest hc anyone can hc so please don't judge too harshly lol
Liz is so so self conscious about how she looks and now that she finally finally looks how she's always wanted, she's meticulous and high maintenance with her appearance, so much so that Mason has a heart attack the first time he goes into her bathroom to take a shower whilst Nate cries tears of joy because he's finally found his soulmate
After they've known each other a while, Liz does something stupid and ends up in the medical ward (yet again) and UB are distraught, especially Rebecca. The sight she sees when she goes to check up on Liz would have her doubled over and laughing if it were not the fact that her daughter is still unconscious: Adam and Nate making sure her hair is hydrated, conditioned and styled properly, having a small argument over whether she'd want it straight or curled as Mason glares at them from where he's applying moisturizer to one hand and tells them to make sure her hair's parted correctly.
Felix is doing an immaculate job doing her nails and everyone stops arguing to appreciate the design, sure that Liz would love them. Rebecca's stunned reaction prompts a chorus of justifications - she woke up after three days last time and all she could do was cry about her hair- and - she was most distressed to find that her skin had not been provided with adequate nourishment and she proceeded to doubt our friendship, which greatly offended me hence why I have taken upon myself this task- and of course, - she spent 5 hours in the bathroom every fucking day, moaning about looking ugly and I'm not putting up with that shit again-
Deep down, they're all grateful to have something to do so that they can ignore the terror that claws at them.

Is it okay to ask for 1, 5, and 14 for Jonah, Madeleine, and Côme? If that’s too much then whoever you’re feeling like answering for!
You can always ask for all of them, I'm always happy to ramble about the blorbos!! <33
1. What is the relationship like between your detective and Rebecca?
Jonah
Out of the three of them, he has the worst relationship with Rebecca. The degree of Rebecca's absenteeism isn't the same for each of my detectives and for Jonah I hc that she was almost never there. By the age of 7 he basically lived with nannies and Rebecca visited every few months for a couple of days before leaving again. He resents her a lot for that and honestly, he doesn't think he'll ever be able to forgive her because he barely considers her to be his mother at all. And he doesn't hesitate to let her know. Despite that, he's decent to her at work because he considers that UB doesn't have to witness their poor relationship.
Madeleine
Her relationship with Rebecca definitely isn't the best. Rebecca was often away, but, although she was almost always late, she always made it for big events like Maddie's 18th birthday, her taekwondo tournaments or her graduation, but she wasn't there for every other little things like parents/teachers meetings, or when she had the flu. She doesn't resent her, because now that she knows what she does for work she can understand in some ways, but she's still sad because all she wanted was a mother. So, she's not mean to her but she isn't really friendly towards her either. About fixing their relationship, she's willing to do it if she sees that Rebecca is really putting efforts into it and that this isn't just talk.
Côme
They have the best relationship with Rebecca. They were quite the independent kid and had a vague understanding of her job, so they didn't really question it as long as she was there for every big moment of their life. But to be fair, she was there for almost every of their birthdays, even if she sometimes showed up late most of the time and always kept in touch for other little things. But there was always that distance between them: Rebecca wasn't a very affectionate parent while Côme really needed that. But their relationship recently started deteriorating when they understood how much secrets Rebecca kept from them about their own self, but also about Rook. So their relationship is really awkward at the moment.
5. Do they trust Rebecca with information about their life, or would they rather keep the information limited?
Jonah
Gosh no, Jonah absolutely doesn't trust her with info about him, even the tiniest detail. He cut ties with her when he left the house at 16 and when she showed up at the station, it was his first time seeing her again, in years. She has no idea what degree he got in uni, she didn't know he had a dog until someone from UB mentioned Bo, she didn't know about Bobby until b2, she still doesn't know anything about his past with him and will never know about it. If it wasn't for work he would have never contacted her again, so yeah, she's on a needs-to-know basis with him.
Madeleine
Yes and no. If Rebecca asks anything about her life she will talk about it, but she doesn't do it spontaneously. Also she never told Rebecca about her IBD and begged Elidor not to tell her. She doesn't know yet if she wants Rebecca to know about it, so she's keeping it secret for now, even though all of UB knows.
Côme
Despite the fact that they have the best relationship, they aren't really privy with each other. Rebecca knows about what's going on Côme's life because they keep in touch while she's away, but not regularly enough to know their kid properly and the info she has on Côme is often outdated. Yet Côme doesn't keep anything from her; she'd find out eventually, so they're always open about anything, at least if she asks. If she doesn't, Côme doesn't say anything.
14. Does your detective harbour any jealousy or resentment towards Unit Bravo for knowing Rebecca more than the detective or for being around her longer?
Jonah
He doesn't. It was Rebecca's job to be a parent and be there for him, not UB's so he doesn't blame them for that. They didn't know he existed so really there isn't anything to blame them for. And as for jealousy, he doesn't care enough about Rebecca to actually feel any of it.
Madeleine
She does feel a little jealousy towards UB for knowing Rebecca more than she does. She was longing for a better relationship with Rebecca for so long and seeing that UB got that before her really hurt her. Yet, she doesn't let it show, so it doesn't affect her relationship with UB.
Côme
They do feel jealousy towards UB. Even though their relationship with Rebecca is fairly decent, they were never really close and Côme envies that closeness they have with her, especially with Nat and especially after they discover how much secrets Rebecca has been keeping from them. How come UB gets to know and not their own kid? This definitely led to a little bit of conflict with Nat at the beginning.

Staying up ‘till sunrise
Fandom: The Wayhaven Chronicles
Pairing: Morgan x f!detective (Madeleine Kingston)
Word count: ~1k
CW: mention of chronic illness, blood
read on ao3
Morgan’s hearing focuses when she realizes her steps are getting closer. How she knows they’re hers, Morgan couldn’t possibly explain it. Maybe it’s simply because they’re accompanied by that heartbeat she has grown accustomed to. Maybe it’s something else entirely. She just knows they’re hers and that’s enough to put a grin on her face.
As Madeleine stops in front of her door, Morgan can hear the ruffling of her nightgown and her grin widens - she’s hoping it’s the green one. The one she had once seen on Maddie’s clothes rack. The one with the see-through fabric that ends with lace. Maddie’s heartbeat is faster than usual, but Morgan just assumed it was because of the girl’s apprehensive nature. How many times had she heard her pace in front of her room before deciding that maybe Morgan wouldn’t be bothered to see her. The vampire is at the door, waiting for the knock that will announce Madeleine is ready.
She takes a few steps back into the corridor and Morgan tries to ignore the tinge of disappointment growing in her chest at the thought that she’s going away. But Maddie stops in the corridor, lets out a wince of pain. Morgan’s hand reaches for the doorknob. What if she needs help? What if Morgan had mistaken the faster heartbeat for Madeleine’s usually anxious one? But Maddie is back in front of the door. And the knock finally comes.
Morgan tries not to tear the door open, to appear laid back. “It’s late. Shouldn’t you-” the words get caught in her throat as she takes in the sight. “Sweetheart?”
Madeleine is leaning onto the door frame, barely able to stand, and to say she looks exhausted would be an understatement.
The eye bags, that had been carefully concealed with makeup this afternoon, betray the fact that she hasn’t slept in a few days. She’s covered in sweat and her already pale skin is now paler than Adam’s. Her usually wide smile is gone and instead the corners of her lips barely lift as Morgan opens the door.
“Do you know…um,” she stops, and Morgan can almost see the screws turning inside her head as her brain lags. She starts panicking. Her mouth opens for words which don’t want to come out but she finally manages to mutter “I need medicine…”
“I’m not sure if we have any, but I can ask Nate.”
“No!” Madeleine presses a hand on her stomach with a wince. “I’ll be fine…thanks anyway.”
She turns away but before she can take a step, Morgan grabs her wrist.
“What do you need, sweetheart?”
“Would you mind going to my apartment?“ With the look she gives her, Morgan can tell she’d been hesitating over that question probably for at least half an hour and Morgan can’t help but wonder how long she had been in pain before she decided asking for help was the best option. That look tells her Maddie would have gone herself if only she wasn’t in that state. So Morgan only nods and Maddie continues. "There is a pillbox in the cupboard above the bathroom sink, take that. It should be full but if it’s empty…Do you have some paper and a pen?”
Morgan shakes her head and Maddie heads towards her own room where she settles behind her desk. She rips a piece of paper from her sketchbook and writes down a small list of medicines before handing it out to Morgan with the keys to her apartment.
“I’ll be back,” Morgan says, and before she can stop herself, she is landing a kiss on the top of her head. She quickly heads for the door but when Maddie calls her name, she turns around.
“Thank you.”
___
“So, want to talk about it?”
After Morgan had come back, holding the mushroom shaped pillbox - of course it had to be mushroom shaped - she had flopped down on Madeleine’s bed. She waited for her to take her medicine with a glass of water and crawl back under the bed sheets.
Morgan didn’t usually stay long in her room, Maddie knows her room is a lot to take in so she never blamed her for it. She hasn’t been around long enough to change stuff in her warehouse room to accommodate her like she did in her apartment. But Maddie also knows that even though she tries not to show it, Morgan is worried right now.
Her answer takes a while to come. Not because she doesn’t trust Morgan. She knows she will listen, Morgan always does. She’s just not sure she’s ready to talk about it but she also knows this is bound to happen again if the woman stays in her life. So she takes a deep breath and starts.
“When I was 16, I was diagnosed with a chronic illness. I was getting sick every 2 days: stomach pain, blood, fever, the whole thing. That wasn’t pretty to see.” Maddie’s tone is clinical, and if Morgan didn’t know her better she would think talking about it is nothing, but she can picture Madeleine rehearsing what she was going to say for the half hour she had been gone and probably even before she came to her room.“We tried a few treatments before we found one that finally worked and it got better. But I still get sick, have bad days, sometimes bad weeks and this week is a bad one.”
“Why isn’t it on your file?”
“I guess because Rebecca doesn’t know. She wasn’t there when I got diagnosed and I never told her.”
“But she’s-”
Morgan doesn’t have to finish her sentence, Maddie knows how awful it sounds. She remembers the sleepless nights in their empty house. The meltdowns in the hospital’s parking lot. The hours spent on google, looking up every word she didn’t understand on her blood tests. The days and nights spent on the bathroom floor. Her mother’s calls when she received a text from the school because Madeleine had forgotten to forge Rebecca’s signature on her leave of absence. She remembers sobbing over help that would never come because she was alone in this.
Of course, she could have told Rebecca, but what help would it be? She had let Maddie go through Rook’s death on her own so she would have never cared enough to help her go through that. So she never told her. She even begged Elidor not to put it in her file when he discovered it.
Madeleine didn’t realize Morgan had pulled her into her arms until she pressed a kiss on her forehead.
"You don’t have to go through this alone, not anymore…”
If Maddie wasn’t exhausted she would have cried at Morgan’s words.

Bundle -Adam-
Working on a series of one-shots of M!UB holding their first child, starting off with Adam. As an FYI, I will not be having baby names in these because... well because I never thought of any lol
I did my best on this one, but admittedly I am nervous to post it
Would love to hear any feedback you may have and suggestions on who is next :)
Adam was sure that if he were human, he would have rubbed his palm raw with worry. It didn’t matter how far away they placed him, he could hear Dinah’s shouts as if she were right next to him. Her begging for it to be over. It triggered everything in him that told him to run to her side and stop whatever was happening to her, but he couldn’t. He wasn’t even allowed to be in the room. He could only settle for worry and beating himself up over how he had done this to her.
“Do you think if I stepped on it that it would stop from tapping like that or do you think he would launch me? You know what, it’s a gamble I’m willing to take.” Adam vaguely heard Felix say, followed by the shuffling of him getting up.
Nate also got up on that, talked Felix into not taking that gamble, and walked over to Adam, a firm and grounding hand landing on his shoulder. It made Adam realize how tense he was, how hunched his shoulders had become.
Sympathy was in Nate’s gaze and voice as he said. “You might want to stop tapping your foot like that, old friend. You might break the tile... and maybe the foundation underneath the tile even.”
Adam hadn’t even realized he had been tapping his foot at all. He immediately put a stop to it.
“I apologize,” Adam quickly said, knowing that if he were in their shoes the sound would have annoyed him.
“No apologies needed! We can hear the severe, overwhelming pain the detective is in giving birth to your child just as well as you can. Can’t blame you for being antsy, she sounds like she’s dying in there.”
“Felix,” Nate sighed, “I know you think you’re helping, but you aren’t helping.”
“Is the comradery not comforting?” Felix asked.
“No, not the way you’re using it.”
Adam had to admit that the banter did make him want to smile a bit and it was a bit comforting. Casual. Normal.
He was sitting in a room with his team- Nate standing by for comfort and to ease tension, Felix there to potentially cause tension (but mostly to support and make the situation lighter), and Mason smoking in the corner who was there to show support in his own way by just being present.
None of the Unit Bravo was allowed to be in the room while the detective delivered. The Agency was even very particular about who would be allowed to attend the detective because of their blood. And... potentially the baby’s blood.
Adam had to swallow a gulp of worry at that.
“Think our two leaders will produce a hybrid?” Felix asked excitedly.
Adam felt like he swallowed a rock at that.
“Felix,” Nate warned.
“I don’t care as long as it doesn’t start ordering me around straight out of the detective’s-”
“Mason-”
Mason was rescued from whatever scathing scolding he was going to receive by the sound of a loud scream from the detective, followed shortly after by the sound of a baby’s cry.
Relief and anxiety made an interesting cocktail within him. The want to vomit made him feel very human in that moment and he wanted to rush to the room and confirm with his own eyes that everything was okay and everyone was healthy... but he must wait until Elidor came to retrieve him. All he could do was focus on the two heartbeats he had known so well.
“Congratulations,” Nate said with genuine joy to Adam.
“Strong lungs.” Was all Mason had to say in congratulations as he winced at the sounds he could hear better than the rest of them.
“So what do we call you? What will you go by? Don’t tell me father because that’s so stiff and boring... so you. Will it be papa? Dad? Daddy-”
Adam slightly heard Mason choke at the last name, but the list ended at that as Elidor walked into the room to retrieve Adam.
Felix started to tag along before Mason grabbed him by the shoulder to stop him.
“Please send a message when we can come meet the baby. Just uh... don’t send it to me. Mason and Felix will be at the ready. And try not to forget in your joy, we also want to meet the newest addition to our family.”
Felix looked like an eager puppy while Mason looked considerably less enthused by seeing a child but gave a nod anyways.
Adam kept pace with Elidor walking to the room where Dinah was, but it took every ounce of his patience to not use his speed to get there in a heartbeat to see the situation himself.
“Everything went well, I’m assuming?” he asked, feeling the uncomfortable need to converse to calm nerves that wouldn’t calm no matter what he did.
“Yes, she did well and the baby is healthy. We will have to wait on the results for the blood, of course.”
“Of course.”
And that’s where the conversation died.
When they finally made it to the door, Elidor murmured a “congratulations” as let Adam enter alone.
The smells of blood and childbirth lingered in the room, maybe only noticeable to him and his heightened senses, as he zeroed in on Dinah and the baby immediately.
Dinah was pale, sweaty with exertion, and her hair was a mess. Adam had never seen a more beautiful and strong person in his 900+ years of living. In her arms was a tiny bundle with soft breathing and a tiny little heartbeat. It was the kind of sight you fall in love with and want to paint a picture of to remember forever. It was the kind of sight that took a strong man and made him weak in the knees.
“Don’t just stand there and stare, I’ll start blushing. Come see your son,” Dinah said with a small smile.
Adam sort of wished she would blush a bit to give her just a little bit of color and not look so ghostly. He would never say that aloud.
As Adam approached, Dinah shifted positions to meet him and it immediately set off every alarm he had. Her grimace at the effort and movement sliced through him worse than a sword could have. But... he would not be overbearing. He would not order her around. She knew her limits and he must trust them.
Meeting her halfway, he peered at the baby in her arms and felt like all the air he technically didn’t need leave him. The baby had his blonde hair, hardly visible in its sparsity and he wondered, when the baby grew to open it’s eyes more, if it would have his icy green eyes or Dinah’s dark ones. The pink skin radiated heat that was so comforting, so alive.
Dinah made the move to hand the baby to Adam and he quickly took a half step back.
“I-I don’t know if I should. He seems very... breakable.”
She chuckled a bit, wincing as she did it. “He is very breakable, but I’m not about to let you go his whole life with you never touching him because you’re scared. You can be soft and you know how to be gentle. Now take your son and I can get some rest.”
Well, he couldn’t very well argue with a woman who birthed a whole person out.
He had never held a baby before and Dinah had to sit him down and coach him. There was a startling amount of things you had to worry about just to hold an infant that added to Adam’s fears, but the second his son was in his arms the fears were whisked away and he was charmed beyond belief. He felt so incredibly... whole. He felt different than the man he was two seconds ago, how was that?
“There you go. How do you feel? Isn’t he cute? Don’t you just love him?”
“I feel like a father, considering half of his genetics are yours of course he is cute, and I loved him long ago. It did not start just now.”
“Well, no, I get that but the feelings are stronger now that he’s actually here, right?”
“Yes,” he agreed softly, never lifting his gaze from the child as he and Dinah spoke.
He listened to her light footsteps as she eased her way back into bed with a groan.
“You know I’m never going to do this to you again with all the screams, groans, grimaces, and winces I have seen and heard today.”
“I think that’s quite out of your hands and quite over the top, my love. Some people have like eight children and function just fine. What if one day he comes to you, puppy-eyed, and says he wants a sibling, hm?”
“... that’s a problem I will have to face later. Much later. Also I can deal with puppy-eyed looks. Ask Felix.”
“Sure, sure,” Dinah responded non-committedly and not an even a little bit convinced.
After almost no time of lying on the bed, her breath and heartbeat slowed into rest.
With Dinah and his son both asleep, Adam could revel in the silent comfort of their alive, healthy, human sounds that plagued him with unsettlement Dinah’s whole pregnancy and delivery. He could finally assess the human that he and Dinah had made together.
He stroked the baby’s hair. Soft.
He ran a thumb over the baby’s tiny, puffy cheek. Soft.
He moved the blanket bundled around his son. Soft.
He looked at his son’s that reacted with a very strong grip around his finger, Adam’s lips couldn’t help smile.
Soft.

31 Days of Wayhaven-Feral
@31daysofwayhaven
Tried something I bit different narratively for this one, I hope you guys enjoy! :)

Title: Patience
Pairing: Mason and Mariana “Mari”
Words:2.5k
Warnings: Mild descriptions of blood and injury
“I’m sure you know why you’re here, Detective Gonzales”
Mariana looked down at her hands, swollen and red, with the start of bruises forming on every visible part of her skin, and she could already feel the bruises forming every else on her body.
She looked back up to someone she had just met today, but she was told they were a higher-up in the Agency, and she tried to steady her breathing, but she had not been able to catch her breath for the past few hours.
“What do you want me to say?”, she asked, the bite forming in her voice as almost a protective measure.
“I’m not trying to fight with you, Detective”, they answered calmly, “All I need is for you to explain what happened”.
“Are you not going to tell me how he is until I do or is there another reason for keeping this a secret for me?”, she growled, frustration filling her voice.
“I have not received word on how Specialist Agent Mason is doing”, they said as if she was not getting angry at all, “As soon as I do, you are the first person I will tell. I have no reason to keep that a secret from you”.
They took a pause, and when Mariana said nothing, they continued, “Just run me through what happened. You’re not losing your place in the Agency for this”
“Because that’s what I care about right now”, she scoffed.
“I have heard much about your mistrust of the Agency, Detective”, they said calmly, “But your own personal opinion does not affect our opinion of you. All I am asking is for you just tell me what happened. This is not an investigation, there is no reason to keep any secrets from me”.
“Fine”, Mariana spat, “If it will get you and every other Agency member off my back”.
She took a deep breath, and allowed herself to get lost in the memory again, even with her brain begging her not to.
~~~~
               “They should have been back a long time ago”, Mariana heard Mason huff.
               The rest of the team had gone ahead to scout the premises, leaving the two of them alone. They were at the edge of Wayhaven in the middle of the woods, the sun almost having completely set in the horizon, the light fading faster and faster.
               “They’ll be fine”, Mariana said confidently, “As long as they stick together”.
               Mason snorted, “When did you become such a team player?”
               “I can be a team player”, she replied with a smile on her lips, “With the right team, of course. I’m sure you of all people would know that”.
               A smirk formed on his face, “Oh, don’t I, sweetheart?”
               Before Mariana could answer, Mason’s face suddenly changed into a sneer, “Get down”.
               “Why?”, she hissed, but she did as she was told, and Mason dropped down to the ground with her.
               “Someone’s coming”
               “And what makes you think it’s not the rest of the team?”, she whispered.
               Mason did not give her an answer, but the hardened gaze in his grey eyes was enough for her to know that it was not.
               “We know you’re here, Detective”, said a booming voice, “You might as well stop hiding”.
               Well, shit.
               “It will only be a matter of seconds before the rest of your team is captured”, they continued, “You might as well reveal yourself”.
               Mason suddenly grabbed her wrist, as if he was telling her to stay, and then he got up and walked over to the direction of the voice.
               “Ah, Agent Mason. I was wondering where you were”, that same voice said again, “Give up the Detective, and I’ll let the rest of your team go”.
               “Not a chance”, he growled, and Mariana felt herself tense. She was not going to let him face this alone, even if he had told her to stay and though she knew that she was no diplomat, there had to be something that she could do. She was not going to just sit and hide here.
               “We don’t need to fight”, she said as level as she could as she walked over to Mason, making sure to eye the gun and volt that was strapped to her hip. As went to stand next to him, he put his arm out in front of her, as if telling her to stay back.
               “Oh Detective”, the voice continued, and Mariana saw it was the leader of the trappers that she had the unfortunate time meeting during the mission to save Sanja, standing there with six other trappers, “We are far past peaceful resolutions”.
               She could barely keep up with what happening, but before she could even blink, the air filled with a haze of red fog, and it did not take much of her to realize what it was.
               DMB- Dead Man’s Blood
               Mason gave a hacking cough at the fog, and even though DMB had no effect on humans, it was getting harder and harder to see, and Mariana gripped his shoulder tightly, as if he would disappear if she did not.
               One of the trappers came close to her, swinging at her head, and she dodged it, before throwing her own blow right back at them, their face covered, all she was able see was a pair of light brown eyes.
               In the midst of everything, she had gotten separated from Mason, who was phenomenally still on his feet and fighting despite the DMB, and by the time the crimson fog had cleared, she heard a loud crack like a gunshot, and she heard someone fall to the ground.
               Mariana realized in horror that it was Mason.
               After that, all else was forgotten, and she fought her way over to him, a trapper dangerously close to him, and she scarcely remembered dragging them off before kneeling down to his side.
               Later on, she would wonder why no one tried to attack her at this moment, but as she stared at the now gaping hole in Mason’s stomach, blood soaking his shirt in a thick layer, immediately putting her hands over the wound, expecting it to heal at any second.
               But it did not.
               That is when the details got fuzzy, and all Mariana could remember was swinging at anyone that got close to her, her hands still soaked in Mason’s blood, hearing him struggling to breathe, as she took out all of the trappers with her own hands, never reaching for her gun or volt and even though they definitely managed to get some blows on her from the bruises that were starting to form on every part of her, she still was able to knock each one of the trappers out. She hardly understood how she was able to do so all by herself, but she supposed that it was adrenaline only that kept her standing.
               “Mason”, she whispered, finally kneeling down back at his side, her heart roaring so hard that it was all that she could hear, and she saw him weakly move his eyes at the sound of his name.
               “You’re going to be alright”, she said, her hands still covering the open wound that was still refusing to heal.
               You have to be.
               At this point, the blood now covered up to her wrists, and she saw Mason’s eyes roll to the back of his head.
               No…No…
               “Mason”, she whispered at first, but it was not quiet for long, her voice almost turning into a scream, “Mason! Mason!”
               I can’t lose him, not like this.
               “Please don’t leave me”, she begged, a sob forming in her throat, and before she knew it, she had tears at the edge of her eyes, something that she had not had for years.
               “Mari!”
               She turned to look up at the noise, to see Felix come running up to her, panic forming in his expression as he came bounding up to them.
               “What happened?”
               Mariana did all she could to form a response, but anything that she tried to say just got caught in her throat, and all that came out was just a choke of emotion.
               Adam and Nate were not far behind Felix, and she could barely see the panic in their expressions, her own eyes so full with tears that stung as if they were made of glass.
               “We need to get him out of here”, Nate said, his voice calm, but the worry in his eyes evident, to which Adam nodded in response.
               “Detective, you need to let him go. He’ll be fine once we get him back to the Agency”.
               She felt herself freeze, unable to move, and Adam firmly grabbed her shoulder to push her back, and in her shocked state, she spun around and tried to punch him in the face, but tiredness had already overtaken her, so he dodged in easily, still holding on to her rigidly, and Nate picked Mason up before disappearing back into the forest.
               Adam finally let go of her, and she slumped to the ground at his support gone, and she could see Felix walk over to her as her eyes went back to her bloodstained hands.
               “Hey, Mari”, he said gently, trying to get her to look at him, “It’s all going to be okay”.
               No, it’s not.
               Maybe if she had just stayed hidden, maybe this would not have happened. If she had thought to take out the leader first, if she had-
               “It’s not your fault”, she heard Felix say, but it was if she was listening from underwater, the words just barely audible.
               Yes, it is.
               You’re a failure. You’ll never be able to save ones that you care about.
               She got the sudden desire to yell at him and tell him to leave her alone, but she did not, instead trying to keep the tears from falling down her face, Mariana’s eyes still fixated on the blood on her hands.
               Mason’s blood
               “Alright, we’ll bring her back”, Adam’s voice cut in, and she turned to see hang up his phone and shove it back in his pocket.
               “We need to leave”, he said, turning to her, “We’ll bring all the trappers back to the Agency”.
               All fight at that point had left her, so she got up, trying to tear her eyes away from the scene, doing her best to focus on Adam in front of her.
“Then what happened?”, the Agency Higher-Up asked.
“They took me back to the Agency”, Mariana said, her voice starting to shake, “And I spent what had to have been hours trying to wash the blood off my hands. No one would tell me how he was, and I ended up yelling at Elidor before I was told to go here”.
“And you did”.
“I was told if I wanted information, I would have to talk to you”, Mariana continued, frustration rising in her voice “But I have not gotten any since I came here, so I’m going to assume that was a lie”.
“What I don’t understand”, they said, ignoring her last comment, “Is how you managed to take on all six trappers by yourself?”
“To be honest, I don’t know how”, she replied, “All I can say is that adrenaline overtook me. My whole memory of the event is hazy”.
They nodded, “It was an intense situation, there is no doubt about that. I cannot fault you for the actions that you took”.
A knock at the office door distracted Mariana from answering, and the door opened to her shock, Tapeesa.
“I have Elidor’s report”, she whispered, giving a small smile at her, and she handed it to the higher-up, and it took all of Mariana’s self-control not to rip it out of her hands.
“Specialist Agent Mason will be alright”, they said after reading through the report, “He will just need time to heal”.
She felt herself give such a big sigh of relief that it caused her whole body to slump, and they continued, “However, Elidor has not opened his room up for visitors”.
At any other time, she had may have fought against that, but at the moment, she could care less, letting the fear that had overwhelmed her these past few hours to subside, just a little.
“Does he know why Mason was not healing?”
They shook their head, a frown on their lips, “Unfortunately, no. But they are looking into that now” They then turned to Tapeesa, who had been standing quietly, “You’re free to go, Tapeesa”.
She left, and Mariana turned back to them, “Am I able to go too, or-?”
“I’ve gotten what I needed from you”, they responded, “But, if you need anything, Detective Gonzales, I will do my best to help you in any way that I can”.
“Thanks”, she said, barely looking at them, and leaving the office in an almost sprint.
Mariana made her way to the hospital wing in the Agency, looking into the windows to see if she could find Mason.
And she did, his eyes closed in the hospital bed, IVs hooked up to his wrist, and she noticed that a cut on his head had still not healed.
Even though she wanted to enter and ignore what she was told, she realized that she could not.
It’s your fault he’s here now.
She wanted to leave, run until she collapsed, anything to get away from the scene before her, but it was like she was frozen, and she could not look away.
In her own nervousness, she ran her fingers over the snapdragon tattoo on the inside of her right arm, trying to distract herself from the feelings that threatened to spill over.
“Mariana”
She turned to see Rebecca walking over to her, and she could feel herself tense almost against her will at her arrival.
“Look, I really can’t take being interrogated again right now”
“I’m not here to talk to you about what happened”
“You’re not?”, she asked in honest surprise.
“You’ve had enough of that today I’m sure”, she answered.
Mariana sighed, and she moved her gaze back to Mason, her heart tightening as she did so, “This is all my fault”.
“It is not”, Rebecca said firmly, leaving no room for discussion, “You did what you had to in such a situation. No one can fault you for that”.
She looked down at the ground, not fully believing her, and Rebecca moved her hand on her shoulder, but gently enough that she could pull away if she wanted.
“I know this has been really rough on you, and I know that you need time”, she whispered, “But if you want me to, I’ll be here in any way you’ll have me”.
All Mariana could do was to give a weak nod at the statement, staring at Mason through the glass, her heart feeling like it had fallen to her feet.
I’ll find some way to fix this Mason. I promise.
