Wie intelligente Stromnetze durch IOTA noch intelligenter werden

Smart Grids – sprich: intelligente Stromnetze – sind der letzte Schrei im Energiesektor. Mithilfe grosser Datenmengen stimmen sie die Erzeugung, Speicherung und den Verbrauch von Strom optimal aufeinander ab. Ublicherweise gleicht eine zentrale Steuerungseinheit die Leistungsschwankungen im Stromnetz aus. Das Tech-Unternehmen ElaadNL hat nun einen Meilenstein auf dem Weg zum Stromnetz der Zukunft markiert. Die Hollander prasentierten einen Proof of Concept fur ein autonomes Smart Grid, welches ohne zentrale Steuerung auskommt.

Stattdessen lauft ihr Smart Grid vollkommen autonom, wie aus einer Pressemitteilung des Unternehmens vom Donnerstag, dem 14. Februar, hervorgeht. Moglich macht das die Distributed-Ledger-Technologie von IOTA. Anhand zuvor festgelegter Entscheidungskriterien entscheiden die ans Netz angeschlossenen Gerate selbststandig, ob sie helfen wollen, Leistungsengpasse auszugleichen oder nicht. Sollten sie sich zur Mithilfe entscheiden, d. h. ihren Strombedarf reduzieren oder abseits der Stosszeiten befriedigen, erhalten sie dafur eine Belohnung in Form von IOTA-Token. Dieser Anreiz soll helfen, Engpasse zu uberbrucken. Die verdienten Token konnen die Gerate schliesslich zu einem spateren Zeitpunkt wieder in Energie investieren.

Die Vision vom M2M-Okosystem

Eine Koalition hollandischer Netzbetreiber rief einst die E-laad Foundation mit dem Ziel ins Leben, die Marktreife der Elektromobilitat voranzutreiben. Mittlerweile betreibt diese nach eigener Aussage uber 3.000 offentliche Ladestationen. 2014 keimte die Idee, die Elektromobilitat auf ein neues Level zu hieven. Von der Stiftung spaltete sich das Unternehmen ElaadNL ab. Seitdem erforscht man dort die Moglichkeiten eines vollautonomen, auf Maschinen-zu-Maschinen-Kommunikation (M2M) beruhenden Stromnetzes. Erste Praxistests mit Ladestationen, an denen man mit IOTA zahlen konnte, fuhrte man im April letzten Jahres durch.

Und nun der Durchbruch: Erstmals prasentierte die in Arnheim ansassige Firma ihre Innovation auf dem hollandischen IOTA Meetup im Januar. Auf YouTube gibt sich Jan-Peter Doomernik von Kooperationspartner Enexis geradezu euphorisch:

Red.] also uber die Zukunft der Blockchain spricht, spricht man von einer programmierbaren Maschinenwirtschaft. Als Gartner daruber schrieb, war es eine Vision. Heute haben wir eine Live-Demonstration gesehen.

Konkurrenz um das Stromnetz der Zukunft

Ungeachtet des Pathos ist klar: Auch die Konkurrenz schlaft nicht. Der Wettbewerb um das Stromnetz der Zukunft ist in vollem Gange. Das sachsische Start-up Share & Charge etwa verfolgt eine ahnliche Vision wie ElaadNL, vertraut aber im Gegensatz zu den Hollandern auf die Ethereum-Blockchain. Auch in Sudkorea sind die Ambitionen gross, die Energiebranche zu revolutionieren.

Indes stehen die Entwickler intelligenter Stromnetze allesamt im Wettbewerb mit den ganz Grossen. Sowohl Siemens als auch Microsoft entwickeln ihre je eigene Smart-Grid-Losung. Die beiden IT-Giganten scheinen allerdings auf den Einsatz von Blockchain- oder Tangle-Technologie zu verzichten.
