By the way, just like a PSA in case anyone else is unaware of this as I was – DO NOT KEEP ELECTRONIC BIKES AND SCOOTERS INSIDE
My apartment is now completely uninhabitable, and at least one of my housemates lost pretty much all of their possessions, because an ebike’s battery exploded. Apparently this is quite common, and the manufacturer obviously doesn’t publicize the risk a great deal at all.
Just. Don’t let this happen to you. Don’t let this happen to the people you live with. thankfully we’re all safe, and it could’ve been much worse, but. I would not wish this on anyone

Have an escooter? Please consider wearing a downhill helmet to protect your face
As someone whose relatives have escooters, and someone who has seen a lot of close calls with strangers, I wanna share a little-known bit of advice for anyone who's looking into escooters, or who already has one:
If you're on an escooter, you get the most protection by wearing a downhill or full-face helmet!
DO NOT GO HELMET-LESS!
By 'downhill' or 'full face', I mean the helmets that bmx riders use, or motorcycle riders wear, respectively. It sounds like overkill but here's the thing:
Escooters have a very high center of gravity because you're upright on them, and they have small wheels that don't absorb impact very well. It's super easy to go over your handle bars if you even hit a tiny pothole! According to this study where 212 patients presented to an emergency room, 11.8% of the patients had dental injuries
A lot of these patients presented with facial lacerations and facial fractures. Overall, 44% of patients needed surgery (5.9% needed major surgery and 38.2% needed minor surgery), and 50% needed maxillofacial follow-up
All 212 patients in this study received a head or face injury. 82% of patients didn't wear a helmet
Some more articles explaining dental injuries from escooter use:

In this Korean study, most patients without a helmet suffered some kind of facial trauma
This isn't just a matter of speed, either. If you're not convinced how often people go over the handlebars at lower speeds too, check out the first 25 seconds of this video by Electric Scooter Guide. That's a lot of faceplants at lower speeds! Or if you want a full playlist of people going over their handlebars, I've got you covered. Again see how many of them are faceplants!
And at higher speeds? It's not good. MAJOR TRIGGER WARNING for gore and death: here you will find a graphic picture of someone who was in an escooter accident, they weren't wearing a helmet and they sadly lost their life
I'll link some reddit posts of close calls where the posters were really glad to be wearing downhill/full face helmets, these are either text-only posts, or simple pics of scratched-up helmets: 1 2 3
Most of these accidents don't even involve other people or vehicles! According to this infographic, 80.2% of escooter accidents are 'falls':
So, now what?
If you don't currently have a helmet and are considering getting one, yay! Your first impulse might be to go out and buy a regular bicycle helmet, but remember: a lot of these injuries happen around your jaw and the front of your face! A bicycle helmet doesn't protect that part! When you fall on an escooter, you're likely to fall in ways that are different from a fall on a bike. So consider a downhill helmet (or a full-face, if you wanna channel your inner motorhead)!
Yeah you'll look dorky, but you'll get home in one piece if you get unlucky on the way there 👍
I had a really bad crash yesterday and I can barely walk today.
I'm giving a warning to anyone using unagi, return it. Those scooters are worse than garbage and you'd be safer getting something else. Do monthly credit payments for a different scooter if you can.
I cannot shift blame elsewhere but unagi for this and I'd have been far more seriously hurt if I wasn't wearing gear.
Unagi scooters are not safe
Their deck is small, too small for something that's meant for adults to go 19 mph. The stem is wobbly, this is due to the locking mechanism, it locks well but others have reported the stem snapping at the base, the lock holding tight but the material not holding up to the force. Speaking of snapping the deck is prone to snapping in half where the majority of your weight will sit. On the Voyager the front axle can snap at the base. The tires are smooth save for some basic divots that don't cut that deep so the traction is DANGEROUSLY loose. You will find yourself fishtailing very slightly when going above 13 mph, which is what caused the crash I experienced yesterday.
The product they sell is dangerous and is pulled out of markets across the world. The USA is the only place you can get it. In fact on their website and ToS you are forbidden from taking it outside of the USA. Not North America, the country.
No wonder they're called unagi, they're a slippery eel of a company.
Sorry if this is inappropriate, but I was kinda wondering what caused your house fire? What to avoid doing the future if it was preventative ya know
My housemate's e-bike battery was charging in their room, and combusted. I was at work; thankfully everyone else got out safely. But we all lost our apartment and most of our personal possessions. The bike's owner lost literally everything- they were in the shower and escaped wearing only a towel. Their room looked like a crater; that's not an exaggeration.
I support electric vehicles as part of the fight against climate change, but I REALLY need people to be aware of the risks. The lithium ion batteries they use are not like the one in your phone or your computer, or even in an electric car. While any of the above can catch fire, it seems like the ones in e-bikes and e-scooters are more likely to at the moment. And the fire burns hot and fast- I've heard conventional extinguishers can't even put it out, though I don't know much about that. This wasn't an off-brand bike or battery, either. It was by Rad Power, a well-known and popular company.
Follow all the recommendations for charging the batteries: on a flat surface, attended, and DO NOT leave them plugged in past full charge. That can help, but since this battery was not fully charged when it exploded, I strongly recommend charging them outside if at all possible. I believe some people do it inside an enclosed charcoal grill, the round sort with a cover? The cord would have to stick out but it's still SOME sort of protection in case of fire.
Personally, I will never live in a house with one again, but I have Trauma Reasons and some people need them for cheap reliable transportation. I get that. They're here to stay. We just have to protect ourselves until the technology gets past its teething troubles.
Close your bedroom door when sleeping and when you leave the house. I lost a lot, but my room was the least damaged because my door was closed- the fire literally skipped over my room and up through the ceiling crawl-space.
Beyond that- basic fire safety, I guess. Don't leave candles unattended, etc.
Take care of yourselves, people. Trust me, you don't want to go through even a nonlethal house fire- and this was the best-case scenario.
