Description

SEAMOUNT - SCOLEX is a media performance work incorporating basic electronics, Arduino, Processing, and streaming platforms.

The goal is to play with the voyeuristic, parasitic position of a livestream audience, the visual appeal of Vtubers, and consider the relationship between social media and capitalism/industry. This experiment forces an audience to watch a stream in an unconventional way.

The project consists of a DHT11 temperature and humidity sensor, a pulse sensor, an electret microphone, and general electronics on a breadboard hooked up to an Arduino. The Arduino takes analog and digital data from the sensors and mic and communicates with a Processing sketch, where temperature, breath, and pulse statistics are displayed.

I intend to stream this Processing sketch on Twitch or YouTube. This may also accompany gameplay streams or other content, where the Processing sketch window takes the role of a facecam.

Through SEAMOUNT - SCOLEX, I experiment with ideas of Vtubers and uncanniness; parasitism and voyeurism, mutualism and exhibitionism. Furthermore, I consider the enframement of content on social media platforms, which are mostly bound by a capitalist economic/industrial frame that idolizes statistics.

I aim for an experiment that makes the audience question their role in social media and how they interact with content on different platforms, while keeping it funny, creepy, and interactive.

I focus on getting the drums real tight and these mics certainly capture that with ease especially not having to use cumbersome mic stands that only get in the way😍 I’ve always used, liked the tone, and rugged construction of the e604’s and have always served me well through the years. I’ve literally used them on hundreds of events and never let me down, but a friend of mine turned my attention to these some time ago and I gotta say I’m really falling in love with them. They are small electret condenser mics with flexible goosenecks that bend and contort to just about any placement required especially with the A75 clamp (also built like a tank) the mount allows for great maneuverability around your sound source and it stays put all night. Frequency response is 20Hz-20kHz with a slight roll off around 400Hz which wards off some of the “woofiness” that comes with close-mic’d drum tones. There’s also a surprising 6kHz bump which adds some definition which was pleasing to the ears. On a well tuned drum kit, most drum mics sound good, but these puppies shine and cut through the mix with ease. Do you know of any up-to-date resources or people regarding bat detection? Obvs you can do the classic electret mic -> heterodyne but I'm wondering if a PDM mems mic and software downconversion on an esp32 would work. Tricky thing is that lots of mics can do ultrasound but it's not officially documented or supported.

I've thought about this a little bit before but I haven't done much academic reading. The esp32 does have dedicated dsp hardware that can do big multiplies, multiply-accumulate, and a couple other things, espressif has it available as a component.

there's fairly comprehensive benchmarks of the various dsp functions, you could see if the plain old fft would be suitable, 130Kcycles to process 1024 Radix-2 fp32 samples actually sounds pretty good just lying here not checking the maths.

you'll have to test your mics yourself or find someone who has characterized them to use them outside their spec though. the electret preamp can often have filtering effects and I've never worked with pdm.
