ej says to val "i'm only doing this right now because you're leaving early" when he calls his dad. he says "i need some moral support."
so you're telling me he had to make the call prematurely because he didn't feel there was a single other person who could morally support him through this? not his cousin who he's had these kind of conversations with before, not his ex girlfriend who was shown to be a source of strength and support for him, not a single one of his friends from school would be willing or able?
he had to squeeze such an important call in before she left because she was the only one really on his side.
tl;dr ej deserves so much better.

HSMTMTS S3E7 Rant
RANT Ahead!
Why are we treating Kourtney’s anxiety and EJ’s anxiety SO differently?
Kourtney’s worried about bombing on stage, she gets a literal chorus of supportive sisters to help her climb the literal and metaphorical wall.
EJ is worried about his ENTIRE LIFE imploding, and he gets snarky comments from Ricky about how everyone knows he’s stressed, Carlos (who knows the stress of putting on a show) telling him to “just do it at night,” and literally NO ONE just taking the damn script away at the prom. Gina knew exactly where to find him after the last dance, why didn’t she go look for him DURING it? Where is the close relationship he and Ashlyn have had for years? Why is his arc just about “wow, he’s fucking up everywhere”?
YES, EJ made mistakes. YES, he’s terrible at reaching out and asking for help. So was Kourtney. But she got support, and EJ didn’t. And I think Kourtney DESERVED the help! But why didn’t EJ?
To be clear, this isn’t about the Portwell breakup. I think Gina has some very valid points about them being in different places and feeling unsure about the future, and all those feelings are incredibly valid and real. I think they came a bit out of nowhere and wish we’d been actually addressing those issues all season instead of these GIGANTIC external factors that they keep dropping onto this couple, so it felt a bit unearned, but that part isn’t the problematic part for me.
I CAN’T get behind the way the narrative has treated EJ and diminished what HIS experience of anxiety has been time and time again.
It feels like a very gendered lens on mental health, honestly, and I’m not here for it.

i find it so sad how in s2 when ej was falling for gina he was scared to make a move with her bc he had a fear of being rejected like he had been with nini and the whole “i wonder if he’ll ever learn to love anyone after belle” yet he decided to take the risk and ask gina out.
and then in s3 he does get rejected again and in pretty much the same way with gina running to ricky just like nini did. LIKE THATS SO HEARTBREAKING?!?!? 😭
anyways i’ve said it once and i will say it again JUSTICE FOR EJ CASWELL.

EJ’s wasted potential
I feel so sad when I think about how poorly EJ has been treated by the writers. I remember after s1 ended I was so excited about his story. I really thought they were gonna dive deeper into his home life, his fear of not being enough, his insecurities and give him the anxiety storyline (there were little hints in s1, also his first character description said that he was secretly prone to anxiety attacks). Also, I wished he had a bff who was one of the wildcats (and is not his cousin).
Instead of doing what I was expecting, the writers used him again as a plot device for Ricky's romance… Portwell should've never happened if R*na was planned since Homecoming… I get that they paralleled the batb story in s2, but they could have had only Kourtney and Howie to do that (and let Gina recover in 2b after how much she was hurt by Ricky, without throwing her to another love interest). In s3 they could have easily introduced a new character for Gina's love interest who parallels Hans. It was so easy to keep EJ out of the love triangle plot (which was a redo of the s1 triangle) and let him deal with his own problems… They should have given him a love interest that is a new character, without his romance being the main focus of his story (as much as I love Portwell, I hate that he got more focus only when he started to have feelings for Gina)… His storyline with his father was extremely rushed. They treated the Duke storyline as a joke in most s2a (I liked ep 4 and that one got me really excited about his story, and then it was handled so poorly). They treat EJ as a joke in general. They revealed his name in the worst way possible. They casted him as Sven and put him in THAT costume just to humiliate him for no reason... He has no serious solo, NONE. And we saw that Matt can sing very well if he is given the right song. Also, the lack of EJ POV during most of the show is so frustrating. I've never seen writers wasting such great potential for a character…
He would’ve definitely been a fan favourite character if the writers had done what I was expecting...

even though we all keep saying how much EJ has changed for the better and he had a ton of growth in season 2 (all of which is true), at camp, even though he hasn't seen Val and Maddox since last year, before all the big changes we've seen him go through, neither of them made any comments like "you seem different but in a good way" or anything like that, which leads me to believe he's still the same guy at his core, and he's always been a sweet, thoughtful guy and gone out of his way to do things for other people. Because they both adored him (and it seemed like everyone at camp does) and didn't seem to have any issues with him and it didn't seem like either of them thought he was a bad guy at all or thought that he had ever been a bad guy. just a nice little thought that makes me happy. this basically confirms that EJ has always been a good guy, not always perfect, but a good guy 🥰

hsmtmts s4, ep 5. - Admissions
oh my god, did they finally allow Elton John Caswell to say everything he had to say!!! HE SPOKE UP.
finally, FINALLY. we could hear him say everything he needed to tell ricky.
because yes!!! Gina meant (still means) a lot to him, and losing her hurt him so much. And the fact that he still called Ricky his brother must’ve ached him a ton, both times.
And wow, i’m so thrilled that he got to say the words “If you hurt her… I will never forgive you.” Because Ej Caswell would never in a thousand years willingly or knowingly hurt Gina Porter, let alone, allow anyone else to even think about it. So good for him for not giving Ricky the chance to sneak in a but. He’s the hero from my story.
Plus, he finally got the chance to speak/sing about his feelings about his father? that’s incredible, he deserves so much more love. what a great duet, i think it’s been my favorite song so far.
This was a long episode for a bunch of reasons, but i deeply appreciate the fact that we acknowledged a lot of unsaid things about EJ since season 3, that left us somewhat startled and upset. i mean they did ruin his character, and all the development he had just to have rina but at least we got a nice monologue out of it, right?
all jokes aside. i’m glad he’s at peace with what happened, i’m glad Val and him are apparently together, i’m happy he’s happy.
i love him every single day, he deserves the world.
also this episode has been my favorite so far. lots of drama.

No because imagine ej saying instead of "you're my brother" (which implies that he has such a terrible family life he can barely tell what a good brother is), he says "I'm better than that"
Because after all the shit Ricky has done to him, intentionally or not, he deserves to be slapped. But ejs better than that. He knows it, Ricky knows it. And especially after all the other shit ejs dealing with with his dad, I would love to let my anger out on the dude who has physically assaulted me TWICE, 'stole' my girlfriend TWICE, and gets everything (the lead) without even trying (the fact that he didn't read the full script before opening night). But ej, being the bigger person he is, walks away. And to call him his "brother", was definitely something.
Oh and the fact that no one congratulated him on directing the whole play, yea that would tick me off. But the way ej just walks away. And you know that s1 ej would've bitchslapped Ricky. Which shows that he changed. If Ricky was in the situation, he would've hurt him. 100%. But ej is not Ricky. He knows that, and so does everyone else.
I just hope that after all this portwell build up that felt (not was, but felt) like a plot device for rina, ej ends up happy and content with his life and isn't worried about his dad or any future relationships anymore.
Or at least gets to sing scream.

just watched the finale and i am seething. i cried multiple times during that episode, and most of them came from just looking at ej's face. he looked so broken down, it was honestly heartbreaking.
i don't think i saw him smile once (except maybe during 'in summer'), and you know what the best part of it all was? not a single person seemed to give a shit.

But really, imagine being EJ right now.
All you wanted was a perfect summer with this girl you've been over the moon for since March, bringing her to a place you love.
You get thrust into a job you don't want on a scale no one can imagine, which means your closest friends can go have fun without you while you're stressed constantly. Because you want to help those friends look good on TV, at least in part.
You find out your plans for next year are blown up because of your dad's continued unreasonable expectations, and see this show as the one chance you might have to change his mind, so it HAS to be perfect. Literally everything is riding on it now, at least in your mind.
You're SO preoccupied with finding a way to make all this happen, you inadvertently hurt your girlfriend by trying to protect her (and a little bit yourself), and it blows up in your face in front of everyone.
All while you're feeling jealous of a friend that you frankly, have good reason to be suspicious of his motives around your girlfriend.
And then you have to turn down your girlfriend's sweet prom ask because you're the director and a CIT and it's not like you can just say screw it. You don't have that freedom. You have no freedom, actually, in your last summer in the place you love with the people you love. When that's all you wanted, to be a kid one last time.
And this all happened in a week.
Like, what's the path forward for him from all this? Especially if he loses Gina in the process. How do you reconcile dumping all this on an 18 year old kid, and then breaking his heart because he can't handle this unbearable weight?
I'm just so sad for him. That last look at Gina broke my heart.

Oh holy hell... they're really trying to sell me the idea that EJ Caswell, known overachieving, multitasking, resouceful bad bitch "Peaked in high school" Tom Fedex hates him but that's just so inconsistent. S1 EJ would have already become club president for half his clubs and would have come out as bi and have a revolving door in his door or smt lbr. Would have preferred having only a "Who the fuck is this?" call cameo when he remembers no one but his cousin in S4 cause he's been really Living The College life that whatever this neutering of character he had. Oh fuck, I am so pissed that not even a potential Caswen Scream is making me happy. "Peaked in High School" my ass... when will my beloved overcompetent EJ return from war?
i hope this was cathartic for you lmao but yeah i’m not really buying the peaked in high school idea? unless they have him written so that he’s still very much under his dads control, because i can see how if he’s still doing everything his dad wants and not living any life for himself how he would look back on high school as if it was heaven.
but god i just hope that’s not the case, he deserves better than that. in my mind he moved to los angeles and directed the music video for ninis first single and is going to film school. and that’s the world i’ll live in until august ninth!
