Demián Bichir in  A Better Life (Chris Weitz, 2011)
Cast: Demián Bichir, José Julián, Dolores Heredia, Carlos Linares, Eddie “Piolin” Sotelo, Joaquín Cosío, Nancy Lenehan, Gabriel Chavarria. Screenplay: Eric Eason, Roger L. Simon. Cinematography: Javier Aguiressarobe. Production design: Missy Stewart. Film editing: Peter Lambert. Music: Alexandre Desplat.
Demián Bichir received a well-deserved Oscar nomination for his performance as Carlos Galindo, an undocumented immigrant living with his teenage son, Luis (José Julián), in Los Angeles. The affable, hard-working Carlos struggles to make it and to keep Luis out of trouble, but ends up being deported back to Mexico. The film is distinguished by its vivid exploration of the city's immigrant culture, evoking Vittorio De Sica's Bicycle Thieves (1948) in its portrait of the multiple difficulties of life on the fringes of a big city. Like De Sica's protagonist, Carlos has his chance at upward mobility, in his case a truck, taken from him at a crucial moment.

Matian Firm | La Liga Defensora Managing Immigration Attorney Nancy Reyes Guarderas Discusses Ways Immigrants Can Prevent a Criminal Past from Affecting their Immigration Status
Guarderas urges the importance of immigrants not “self-disqualifying” themselves simply because they have a criminal record.
  Abogada Nancy Reyes Guarderas of the Matian Firm | La Liga Defensora is scheduled to appear on California radio and TV stations to discuss what people do if they have criminal convictions, but want to fix their status, and how La Liga Defensora can help.
  Guarderas said, “We offer a very special service because we have lawyers who are experts in Criminal and Immigration Law. It is important not to have a criminal record, so that it does not affect you with immigration. But, if you already have the record, we can review if there are ways to eliminate the conviction or request that your record be expunged. Bottomline, if there is a way to eliminate the immigration consequences, we have a great team that can help”
  Guarderas says it’s important that immigrants don’t disqualify themselves from filing for immigration relief just because they have a criminal record. With the help of an experienced attorney from a law firm, like La Liga Defensora, that has experience on both sides, it will be a lot easier to build a strong case, no matter what side you’re fighting. Anybody seeking changes in their status should always speak with a licensed attorney before self-disqualifying themselves because there are different ways to reduce or even erase your sentence.
  An attorney with experience in both immigration and criminal law can help with the immigration process by:
  Making a request for the classification of their client’s conviction to be lowered, or removed from the record altogether;
Reducing the sentence; thereby eliminating the negative impact on immigration;
Erasing the conviction completely and allowing the client to submit or continue their immigation application; and/or
Filing a motion to reopen a deportation order after eliminating the criminal basis for the deportation order.
  Nancy Reyes Guarderas is an expert on immigration rights and visas, as she has been advocating and guiding her clients through the immigration process since 1998.
  Guarderas has extensive experience filing affirmative and defensive applications for her clients before the United States Citizenship and Immigration Service. She has also conducted hearings before the United States Immigration Court, briefing and appealing before the Administrative Appeals Office, Board of Immigration Appeals, and the United States 9th Circuit Court of Appeals.
  Guarderas has helped thousands of clients with direct services, conducted community outreach for thousands of people, and trained hundreds of private and non-profit attorneys, social workers, and law students through panels, training, and guest lecturer opportunities at USC’s School of Social Work and Loyola Law School.
