So here’s the deal: I’ve recently been sad to learn that most Christmas wrapping paper isn’t recyclable and tonnes of the stuff ends up in (presumably, ridiculously colourful) landfills. Anything with a plastic coating or glitter is a recycling no no, who knew? My humble suggestions are (as seen here): sturdy card boxes that can be used multiple times, plain, non-coated paper stamped/decorated or manilla brown paper (a personal fave) with jaunty ribbons and the like. I favour screwing up brown paper and ironing it flat for a bit of texture. If you want to be really cheeky you can ‘over wrap’ a breakable in IKEA with their handy roll of brown paper near the tills and reuse (I mean, don’t take the p!ss and wrap a single 50p ‘VILJESTARK’ vase to looked like a lagged boiler!) To be a further eco bore, remove any ribbons or sellotape before sticking in the recycling. This holiday season, let’s focus on creating memories, instead of more stuff. ❄️ This year I have been feeling a bit down about Christmas, and the inevitable consumerism that comes with the season. I don’t like buying gifts that will end up being regifted or sitting on someone’s shelf collecting dust. I know it’s a cliche, but the holidays really aren’t about stuff. As I have gotten older, I have really started to understand this sentiment on a deeper level. Personally, I don’t NEED anything. I acknowledge that I am in a position of great privilege to have everything that I need. For many, the holidays are a stressful and difficult time. What if instead of buying gifts for our friends who don’t need anything, we made a donation to those in need? It is the season of giving after all. I think a great feel good gift is a donation to a cause close to the recipients heart. I also realize that gifting is fun, and often a way people show their love. In this case, if you really want to buy someone a gift, why not consider an experience, handmade gift, or another lower waste gift option? I think it is important to reflect on our holiday habits. Are we buying gifts because we feel obligated? Are we listening to the marketing story that tells us the holidays are all about stuff? Are we buying gifts that we know the recipient will love and cherish? Would it be more meaningful to gift an experiential gift? So I have been very off the grid this month and honestly that has just been due to having zero time! My first Christmas as a small business owner has been amazing, thank you to everyone who placed an order with me. I hope you will have them very very soon! On top of Christmas I have started a new part time job and in Januarymy partner and I are moving to Orkney so we are packing our flat up in the middle of everything - it's been quite the ride!
