I had to return my original birthday Dutch oven (manufacturer defect) but now I have the replacement and I’m finally getting recipes lined up. Here’s my first ever pulled pork. I used Dr Pepper for the acid and liquid, along with a few sundry spices. It cooked around a total of 4 hours.

The pull-apart texture is super fun, but I’m more excited that this whole pot of food cost about $10 in ingredients. I enjoy luxurious meat dishes and I’m really excited to explore the world of slow cooked possibilities with cheaper cuts.

Next on the docket… making my own bbq sauce?

October 2023: The Last Weekend Before Halloween

I've served my corporate overlords for 20 year so they let me pick something out of the company store. Unlike some overlords I've served in the past, they have things someone might actually want in their store. I went with the Le Creuset set... I've been wanting to get a Dutch oven for awhile:

We have a freeze warning for Halloween & All Saints' Day so we've been pulling in anything that wouldn't survive the free like these tomatoes:

Today’s Dutch oven adventure: butter chicken!

Kind of.

It ended up spicy, which was a mistake. In fact, several mistakes were made. The next time I make this dish I will significantly modify my process.

However, it is a delicious cream and tomato chicken curry, so I’m overall happy.

It’s hard to judge the cost since I already had almost everything, but with the chicken on sale I estimate the curry was about $10 total (not counting naan).

I haven’t felt challenged by a dish in a while and I’m looking forward to experimenting with more Indian cuisine.
