Backpacking Italy: Travel Guide

Italy is a European country most often recognized by its unique boot like shape and many wonders to explore. Some of the major cities include Rome, the capital, Florence, Venice, and Milan. In the heart of Rome, is the gorgeous, Apostolic Palace, home of the Vatican and Pope. During my journey through Europe, I definitely ate my way through Italy. Their Gelato, and pasta filled my stomach, and I was overjoyed. In the states, I personally love ice cream, but when in Italy, devour gelato! Although all of Europe is filled with amazing food, architecture and culture Italy has been my favorite to visit because of the people. The people who live in Italy are some of the kindest and welcoming people I have ever met.

One of the places I visited while in Italy was the famous Roman Colosseum. This grand architecture was built around A.D. 70 and 72 and was previously used as an amphitheater that was popular for gladiatorial events. Through the tour of the Colosseum, I learned that another name for this theater is the Flavian Amphitheater because it was built during the rule of the Flavian Empire. This was like gigantic, ruined maze with a mass number of stones much to my surprise. When I first arrived, I was anticipating more of a restored interior, but was happy to see that most everything that was not considered dangerous was well preserved.

Another popular attraction I visited was the Fontana di Trevi that had the most intricate artwork in the city all located on this famous fountain. Though the fountain was really more of a photo opportunity to the many people who surrounded it at all times of the day, there is a lot of historical meaning attached to it. For example, the Trevi Fountain is one of the oldest water sources of Rome. Originally, the saying went that a glass of water from the fountain would bring good fortune and a fast return to the Eternal City. Now, you will find everyone throwing in pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters in hopes of ensuring a return to Rome. It is a lot bigger than I anticipated and though I was happy to see that no person was allowed the privilege of a close up with the fountain I cannot say that an equal part of me was disappointed I could not take in all the details from up close.

Yet another great staple of Italy is the Leaning Tower of Pisa. This tower was built starting in August of 1173 though it was interrupted by many different financial issues, and wars and was not finished until mid-1300s. Much like the rest of the fabulous architecture, the Leaning Tower of Pisa has a great story attached to its history. As a result of the delays and shifts in the ground the tower began too slowly lean. The builders found that by the time they reached the third story of the building the foundations were unstable. After all this time, architects and engineers have found that the building has been falling at a rate of 1.2 millimeters every year.

Finally, the Duomo di Milano is a Catholic church located in Milan, Italy. This cathedral is one of the most beautiful and intricate pieces of art created. In fact, the Duomo di Milano holds the title of the second largest cathedral in the world. One of the reasons it is so unlike any other, is that it was created over the course of many centuries and includes a variety of different designs and styles. The breathtaking structure makes all the sense with Milan being a fashion infused city.

To Help You Plan Your Trip to Tuscany

Tuscany is a stunning region, somewhere in between Milan (north) and Rome (south). Tuscany is the heartland of Italy and ancient Rome: this was the home of the Etruscans from whom the Romans learned so much about architecture.

San Gimignano

The walls around this city have been build in the 13th century. San Gimignano is known for its skyline of medieval towers. Oblong stone shapes overlooking the hilltop town and the lands around it. San Gimignano is located in the province of Siena, a little to the west of Siena itself. This historic center is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. And with good reason. Not only is it a wonder to walk through, but as it is not yet too touristy, it is quite the hidden gem.

Val d’Orcia

This is the place to visit, to see the cypress trees. The trees are in the whole of Tuscany, but Val d’Orcia is the hotspot.

Pienza

Marvel in this beautiful renaissance town. This too is an UNESCO World Heritage Site. This city was there in the 9th century, by another name: Corsignano. Perhaps Pienza is most known for its panoramic views of the Tuscan landscape. A must visit for every tourist is the panorama boulevard around the city.

Lucca

The city with the wall that has never been breached. Located in between Florence and Pisa. Lucca has an intact Renaissance-era city wall. It is called “Mura di Lucca”. It is not literally a wall, but a wide earthen structure. Approximately 4 kilometers in diameter, the Walls of Lucca functions today as a city park around the historic town. Within the walls is the entire world: palaces and squares, towers and churches, narrow streets, water, a prison and the famous Piazza dell’Anfiteator.

Fog over the Tuscan hills

This is what you see, if you are a bird at 6 o’clock in the morning and start to fly. Tuscan hills in the fog. Pure magic.

Siena

The red stone city. Just like other cities, this city was first settled by the Etruscans (900-400 BC). The floor mosaic in the Siena Cathedral of Hermes Trismegistus is a must see. The three time great Hermes Trismagistus may be connected to Greek God Hermes and the Egyptian God Thoth. The Hermetica is a teaching of philosophy and practical magic: the alchemical procedure to make the Philosopher’s Stone. Most noticeable of Siena are the Cathedral and the Piazza del Campo. The Siena Cathedral has that typical white / dark green layers. We see the same in the Duomo of Florence, and Byzantine architecture (like in the German city of Aachen, for instance). The streets of Siena are red and best discovered by just letting fate decide your path. You will be in for a treat at every corner you take.

Monteriggioni

A small walled village. Near Siena and San Gimignano. If you have the time: this is a wonderful place to visit. The medieval town was a front line in the wars against Florence. It is small. It is charming. It transports you to days long past. Truly wonderful.

Volterra

Yes. The home of the vampire royalty The Volturi: from the Twilight saga. But Volterra is a real place. And what a beautiful place. Founded in the 8th century BC, this town can take you through the ages. The ruins of a Roman theatre are in this city. The streets and buildings are stone like in so many Tuscan cities. But every Tuscan city has a character of its own. And so does Volterra. Tall stone structures. Not red as in Siena, but Gray and ochre. With the magic of the light in Italy, it can paint paintings you would love to see.

Florence

Florence. Botticelli. The birthplace of the Renaissance. After centuries of the Church telling people that only God can create, they realised the amazing works of Plato, Aristotle, the Greeks and the Romans. And there was the moment the Humanistic Renaissance was born. Brunelleschi studies the Roman structures and engineered never before seen techniques in creating the Duomo of Florence. Florence is very busy. Try to get to the main attractions early. And then: discover the marvels of this gem of a city by just wandering around. My heart belongs to Florence.

Florence, the city of the goddess of flowers. There’s plenty of churches and cathedrals. Tourism is thriving, but the handicrafts are also flourishing and they make a lot of wonderful things.

Should we have breakfast somewhere before that? I checked out a few restaurants in the area yesterday.

There’s also the panetteria. They have a traditional bread from the region called pan di ramerino, and it has raisins and rosemary inside.

I’ve been to this city countless times but I’ve never had that before either, so I can’t imagine the taste.

The fragrance of rosemary seems to pair well with the sweetness of raisins though.

Santa Maria del Fiore. The cathedral of the Holy Mother of the Flowers is gorgeous, isn’t it?

The outer walls are pink with detailed white and green marble sculptures. I was really taken aback the first time I saw it too.

I bet it was hard climbing the cupola.

You might think this is childish, but I had lots of fun counting while climbing the stairs with you.

The view from the top was really pretty. I just realized this recently, but I think I like looking out at the city from high places now.

This might be the first time I’ve taken my time to come here: Ponte Vecchio.

Even though we’re on a bridge, there’s lots of two-story and three-story shops lined up. It’s strange no matter how many times I see it. It’s like we’re in a regular city.

Apparently, this bridge has been broken and swept away by the overflowing river water in the past. But it was rebuilt about six hundred years ago and it’s still standing now.

Ah, look! That thing passing over the rooftops. That’s the Vasari Corridor.

It runs from the Palazzo Vecchio, through the Uffizi Gallery to the Palazzo Pitti. Only the Medici Family were allowed to use this path.

This bridge houses many goldsmiths, silversmiths, and sells tons of glittery wears.

Hey, I’d like to pick something out for you.

Back when I chose the perfume, you had a really happy-looking smile on your face. It made me happy too.

Pisa: Rapinò una banca in Duomo. Identificato ed eseguita la custodia cautelare in carcere. Dopo una rapida indagine, le donne e gli uomini della Squadra Mobile di Pisa hanno eseguito una ordinanza di custodia cautelare in carcere nei confronti dell’autore della rapina posta in essere lo scorso febbraio in danno di una Banca nei pressi del Duomo della città della torre pendente. Lo scorso febbraio le volanti della Polizia di Stato sono intervenute dopo una chiamata al numero d’emergenza 112, riscontrando che un uomo era entrato a volto scoperto in una banca minacciando il Direttore mentre brandiva una bottiglietta di benzina ed un accendino. In particolare, proferiva le seguenti parole: “questa è una rapina, sta calmo, nessuno si farà male. Questa è benzina, ho un accendino, mi dia i soldi”. Ottenuta la somma di danaro disponibile presso la cassa operativa, l’uomo si allontanava intimando al personale della Banca di chiudere le porte di ingresso dopo la sua uscita. A questo punto il rapinatore faceva perdere le sue tracce. Gli investigatori della Squadra Mobile che convergevano sul luogo del delitto pochi minuti dopo l’intervento della Volante, cominciavano ad approfondire tutti gli elementi investigativi raccolti dai colleghi: le telecamere di sorveglianza presenti in zona ed interne alla banca oltre che alle informazioni provenienti dai testimoni oculari. Così, in pochi giorni, si riusciva ad identificare l’uomo, verificando che lo stesso, poco prima del delitto, si era recato presso un distributore di benzina con uno scooter per riempire la bottiglietta utilizzata come minaccia, guidando poi lo stesso mezzo sino al luogo della rapina. Gli esiti della rapida indagine sono stati valutati positivamente dalla Procura della Repubblica che chiedeva al Giudice per le Indagini preliminari l’emissione dell’ordinanza di custodia cautelare, in seguito eseguita dai poliziotti della Squadra Mobile.... #notizie #news #breakingnews #cronaca #politica #eventi #sport #moda Read the full article

Gonfaloni di Compagnia: Quartiere di San Giovanni

PARTE SECONDA PARTE PRIMA: Quartiere Santo Spirito PARTE SECONDA: Quartiere di Santa Croce PARTE TERZA: Quartiere di Santa Maria Novella Suddivisione degli antichi Quartieri fiorentini

Nel Medio Evo, le città erano divise sia per effetti amministrativi sia per quelli militari: in Sestieri, Quartieri, Terzieri e in suddivisioni minori. Queste in Toscana, avevano nomi diversi. A Siena, Montepulciano e in altri luoghi si chiamavano Contrade, nella città di Pisa avevano il nome di Cappelle, a Prato si riconoscevano dal nome delle porte cittadine ad esempio: Porta al Serraglio. In Firenze si chiamavano Gonfaloni. Al tempo della Contessa Matilde di Canossa, nel 1078, essendo la città cresciuta enormemente di popolazione, fu deciso la nuova costruzione di mura al posto delle preesistenti costruite dai Bizantini, per inglobare i nuovi insediamenti. Vennero chiamate “Matildine” o “Antica Cerchia di Cacciaguida”. Si procedette alla divisione in Sestieri assumendo il nome di: Oltrarno, San Piero Scheraggio, Borgo, San Pancrazio, Duomo, San Piero, divisi in seguito in venti Gonfaloni. Quando tra gli anni 1282 e il 1333, venne una nuova cerchia muraria con il nome di “Arnolfiana” dal nome del costruttore Arnolfo di Cambio, la città venne divisa in Quartieri, prendendo il nome delle quattro porte principali: Porta al Vescovo o del Duomo, Porta Santa Maria, Porta San Piero e Porta San Pancrazio o Brancazio. Dopo la cacciata del Duca di Atene, nell’anno 1343 fu deciso di tornare alla vecchia divisione della città; in quattro Quartieri: Santo Spirito, Santa Croce, Santa Maria Novella, San Giovanni dal nome delle quattro chiese principali. Ognuno venne a sua volta diviso in quattro Gonfaloni, ciascuno possedeva un suo territorio, in determinate parti della città, separato dagli altri da un muro, dal fiume Arno e da strade principali. Ogni divisione, aveva carattere amministrativo e militare. Erano tenute ad eleggere un Gonfaloniere o Capitano assumente il titolo di “Compagnia”. Quartiere di San Giovanni

Gonfalone Chiavi – Dalle mura cittadine presso la Porta alla Croce, il confine era delimitato dalle Vie dell’Agnolo e Via dei Pandolfini. Per Via del Proconsolo entrava in Borgo Albizzi, passava fra le case dietro Santa Maria in Campo, traversava Via dell’Oriuolo, e giungeva allo Spedale di Santa Maria Nuova e per Via della Pergola e Via di Pinti tornava alle mura. Le parrocchie alle quali appartenevano le case di questo territorio erano: Sant’Ambrogio, San Pier Maggiore, San Procolo, e Santa Maria in Campo;

Gonfalone Drago San Giovanni – Dalla Croce al Trebbio per Via del Giglio fino a Piazza Madonna degli Aldobrandini, Via della Forca, Via Cerretani, Piazza del Duomo, Via dei Martelli e Via Larga (Via Cavour), fino alle mura. Da lì per Via San Sebastiano, Via della Sapienza, Via del Cocomero (Via Ricasoli), di nuovo a Piazza del Duomo, da San Cristofano degli Adimari, il Ghetto Piazza degli Agli, e da lì attraverso le case e per Via del Trebbio fino alla Croce al Trebbio. Comprendeva le parrocchie di: Santa Maria Maggiore, San Lorenzo, San Marco, San Cristofano degli Adimari, San Tommaso, San Leo, San Michele Berteldi;

Gonfalone Lion d’Oro - Da Piazza del Duomo per via de’ Martelli e Via Larga fino alle mura per arrivare al confine del Gonfalone Lion Bianco. Poi per via de’ Cenni, Via del Giglio, Via della Forca di Campo Corbolini e via de’ Cerretani tornava in Piazza del Duomo. Il territorio apparteneva alle parrocchie del Duomo, San Lorenzo, Santa Maria Novella, Santa Maria Maggiore;

Gonfalone Vaio – Da Orsanmichele, Piazza di Mercato Vecchio, Piazza di San Cristofano Adimari, Piazza del Duomo, fino a Via de’ Servi, le mura, Via della Pergola, Via Folco Portinari, dietro Santa Maria in Campo, Via del Proconsolo, Via Dante Alighieri fino a Orsanmichele. Parrocchie del territorio: San Michele in Orto, San Tommaso, San Cristofano Adimari, Duomo, San Pier Celorum, Santa Margherita, San Martino, San Michele Visdomini, SS Annunziata, Santa Maria in Campo, San Benedetto e Santa Maria Alberighi: Nel Corteo della Repubblica Fiorentina, sfilano con il Quartiere di San Giovanni dopo il nobile Commissario il Bandieraio con la bandiera con l’insegna del Quartiere: D’azzurro al Battistero d’oro affiancato da due chiavi (una per parte) in palo legate con un cordone dello stesso colore. Sono presenti i quattro Gonfalonieri di Compagnia, con i quattro bandierai che portano l’insegna del Gonfalone.
