St. Columba founded a Moes tryst this site in 547 AD. The Tower and cross date back to then.

Poet and Nobel Prize recipient for literature in 1923 W.B. Yeats is buried here. Yates great grandfather was the Rector of this church in the early 19 century.

We awoke to light rain and decided we would go to Carrowmore Megalithic Cemetery anyway. we were lucky as the rain held off as we made our way around the many mounds .

Next we made a visit to Rosses Point and then to Drumcliffe where we viisted the Church of St Columba . Yeats is buried in the churchyard here and the church has lovely doors donated by the Yeats Society of Perth

In the afternoon we visited the amazing ruins of Sligo Abbey. By this stage it was very wet and we again had very very wet feet and clothing.

The very wet day was finished off with a lovely meal with my "Irish family' i.e the mother and sister of my neighbour Jenny at Hardagon Bros pub

Hach diese wunderschönen Bäume! 🌳 Gerade im Winter, wenn sie jeden ihrer feinen Äste zeigen, sehen sie so mystisch und fast schon unwirklich aus. Under bare Ben Bulben’s head
In Drumcliff churchyard Yeats is laid.
An ancestor was rector there
Long years ago, a church stands near,
By the road an ancient cross.
No marble, no conventional phrase;
On limestone quarried near the spot
By his command these words are cut:
Cast a cold eye
On life, on death.
Horseman, pass by!
 (WB Yeats, Under Ben Bulben)
 Irish poet William Butler Yeats (1865-1939) is buried in the Protestant churchyard, Drumcliff, Co. Sligo, Ireland. As Yeats requested in his last poem he was buried within sight of Ben Bulben.

Aed O Domnaill, king of Tir Conaill, came into Carbury and ravaged the whole district, being advised thereto by his wife, the daughter of Magnus O Conchobair. She herself, with all the gallowglasses and men of the Clan Murtagh that she could obtain, marched against the churches of Drumcliff and plundered many of its clergy.
