I don’t know if you’ve already done it, but could you please do an analysis of the trash can scene (especially how Emil & Lalli still share dreams even after Lalli leaves his head!!!!!!!)? It’s one of my favourite scenes and I’d love to hear your take on it :)
I'd LOVE to!!!
This got. Way longer than I expected.
Since this scene comes right at the end of Adventure 1, it's in an interesting place--both as a general read and also when it comes to what I bring to it as a reader (/fan creator.) It's the denouement and also foreshadowing for what's to come at the same time.
I'm actually going to start on page 955. There's an interesting change here, did you notice it? Thought bubbles. The comic doesn't use them hardly ever; character thoughts are either expressed directly, or, if they are too internal even for that, through grumbled dialogue. But here we see Emil's thoughts, evaluating the situation and the risks of his and Lalli's only options. He looks outside (They've all gone inside the house!) and then looks at Lalli (If they hear us...)
And then he and Lalli are on the move without another word.
Lalli's time inside Emil's head is obviously key, both to them as individual characters and to their relationship. Each of them has grown and matured tremendously over the last couple of weeks, and this individual growth has allowed them to also grow closer to each other.
So what do thought bubbles tell us?
After months of being in the field, and despite still speaking two different languages, Emil and Lalli have figured each other out. They actually understand each other.
This relationship is for real.
The rest of their escape continues to highlight this, the way Emil seamlessly trusts Lalli's actions, even though he has no idea what Lalli's actually doing. The way Lalli jumps in to making sure they stay safe, because Emil's expended everything he has getting them this far. They hide (in a trash can) and the back and forth of support continues. Lalli gets dazed when they get exposed, and Emil takes out the attacking duskling in the meantime. They hide together and protect each other. They're desperate and tired but they're a team.
There's no question they're working collaboratively, for either Lalli or Emil or for us as the readers. Lalli won't ditch Emil in the depths of an Old World building, and Emil won't set of an explosion without making sure Lalli's gotten out first.
And then when they fall asleep? A classic move, if I say so myself. They're stuck waiting for it to be safe, the adrenaline is receding, and they're both exhausted.
Then... they both wake up in the same dream? Inside the trash can?
And this is one of the things I am confident we were robbed of in Adventure 2 (if not in a distant, theoretically Adventure 3.) There is a great deal of detail in this little moment, detail that has zero explanation.
Let's observe how this dream is different from any others we've seen:
It's in the present, in the dreamers' present circumstances. They're still in the trash can. They're still in their uniforms. There is no dreamspace in the typical sense.
There are also butterflies. And a bird. The butterflies glow, the bird does not.
Both Lalli and Emil are there.
The first dream in Adventure 2 suggests that the shared dreaming doesn't always happen, but does happen sometimes. Whatever happened when Lalli crawled into Emil's head, and/or the ensuing time after that, made permanent changes to the way both Lalli and Emil interact with the dreamsea.
So from this three-panel segment, we know:
There's a third space that exists for them. There's a third dreamspace for both of them. This space isn't static, and can be very present--and very unstable.
This space is subject to influence just as any mage can influence their own dreamspace. I don't think it's insignificant that, as Emil gets more worked up, more and more butterflies appear, culminating in the bird. Think about the fish and the birds in the Adventure 2 dream--Emil influences this space, whether he does it consciously or not.
Emil and Lalli are permanently tied. Whatever happened to them, their minds and their souls are permanently muddled.
I don't have a precise conclusion for this post, but thanks for sending the ask! My main writing I'm doing right now is proving to really stretch me technically, so I was jonesing for a change of pace. Feel free to send more if you've got any other thoughts or questions :)

Please tell me more about SSSS Stranded AU, I just discovered it and that looks so interesting??
thank you, sure! it originally started with me wondering what would be a good narrative trade off for tuuri surviving. this + my love for putting my favorite characters on the heros journey created the au. the change that kickstarts the au is emil also seeing the omen that lalli and reynir see on page 580 that foreshadows tuuri's death. the note about emil having no clue made me think....
anyway that prompts emil to start wondering about what's actually chasing them, and when the rune reynir gave him burns up in his pocket when lalli is in the hospital using it against the ghosts, it prompts him to (skeptically) ask reynir about magic and reynir's runes. because of this, reynir attempts to create a powerful protection rune, one strong enough that it knocks him out both physically and spiritually. when the ghosts and trolls raid, emil suggests using some of their equipment as barricades. he also suggests on a whim that tuuri stays in the drivers compartment with reynir's unconscious body so that she might be able to use the cat tank to run over a few of them instead of being immobile in the back.
with reynir out and unable to create a magical barricade or contact onni across the dreamsea, the ghosts hit hard and without onni's save, emil is attacked and dragged away. that prompts the others to fall back to the cat tank. tuuri isn't turned by the troll because the windows mean that lalli is able to see and shoot it before it can turn her. the rest of the buried explosives are triggered (by emil thinking he's going to die), which combined with the distraction of emil getting dragged off means the others are able to use the cat tank and retreat. emil survives due to the protection rune that reynir gave him before he passed out, but he's unsure of how long the explosion knocked him out for.
from THERE, emil takes advantage of the equipment left behind and follows the tracks of the cat tank. reynir is in his head instead of lalli, and since the ghosts are following emil but unable to hurt him bc of the still working rune, reynir is able to direct emil to the church to get rid of the ghosts. doing that knocks reynir awake, where he finds himself on the rescue boat with the others. he's unable to convince the crew that emil is alive, but lalli is alerted because he can no longer sense the ghosts.
reynir is adamant that emil is alive, while lalli is skeptical that he's still surviving as the days pass. reynir attempts to find emil's dream space by enlisting lalli and a more reluctant onni, while emil gets to the rendezvous point and realizes that hes too late.
and thats how he gets stranded. yay!

Tips For First-Time Solo Travelers
Tumblr media
Whether you're going on your first solo vacation or you've been traveling on your own for a while, here are some tips to make your travel experience as safe as possible. Don't compare yourself to others; dress conservatively, learn non-verbal cues, and avoid comparing yourself to the locals. Stay in a hostel or homestay and develop your communication skills. By following these tips, you'll be able to have an excellent trip that will not end in disaster.
Dress conservatively
If you're a female traveler, packing for a conservative country can be a bit challenging. Some countries have stricter cultural and social expectations, so dressing conservatively can prevent unwanted attention or offense. In countries with a lot of Hindu or Muslim influence, it's important to cover up in public, especially at mealtimes. Also, dressing modestly will help you blend in with the locals.
Although solo travel is liberating, there is a certain element of risk. As a woman, you're likely to be an easier target for thieves or pickpockets. As such, you need to take the proper precautions to ensure your safety and peace of mind. Avoid wearing overly touristy clothing and take time to learn about the culture of your destination. You'll be better able to blend in if you dress modestly.
Stay in a homestay or hostel
When it comes to budget travel, staying in a homestay or hostel is an excellent choice. You will be surrounded by friendly people and the best part is that you can get to know the local people and culture without having to pay for accommodation. Hostels are also a great place to meet other travelers, as they usually offer free activities and tours. It will help you get to know the area and meet new people.
If you're a female solo traveler, a hostel with female-only rooms is a great choice. However, you can also find hostels that have private rooms that are ideal for solo travelers. Some examples of hostels where you can stay include Dreamsea Surf Camp in Uluwatu, Yak Lake House in Bacalar, Mexico, and MEININGER hostel in Brussels.
Develop communication skills
If you're going to travel alone, developing your communication skills is crucial. You'll be required to communicate with a variety of people, from strangers to locals. You may be spending the night in a hostel, where you can practice your language skills with travelers from other countries. In addition to being an asset to the community, it will also be easier for you to communicate with locals when you arrive.
Another essential skill to develop is empathy. Being alone forces you to communicate with people from various cultures, and you'll quickly learn that a common language is not always a prerequisite. This is not to say that you should not develop these skills, but they can prove invaluable when you're on the road. Also, developing empathy for other cultures can help you better understand the differences between them. By learning about another culture, you'll be able to relate to the people around you and gain an appreciation for different customs.
Make a memorable trip
When traveling on your own, you have to do more than just book a ticket. You also have to plan your trip to avoid last-minute hassles. When you are traveling alone, you must ensure that all of your arrangements are well planned and easy to understand. For example, if you are taking a long flight, you should make sure to check special operating hours. You should also check the weather forecast, so you can make an informed decision regarding your accommodation.
The first step in planning a solo trip is to choose a place that is both safe and welcoming. The best places to stay in for a first-time solo traveler are places that are popular, social, and known to have many activities. A popular destination will attract many travelers, and it is a good idea to research the area thoroughly. Safety should be your top priority. Check online reviews and read travel guides for your destination.

Not an exceptionally thrilling post today, visually speaking, but I’ve had a great day. Woke up and it wasn’t bucketing down, which was a relief. Scooted up the road for a yoga class at a place called the nuga house, where their shala is partially open to the elements. This was particularly nice during savasana when the rain started up again.
After the sweatiest yoga I’ve ever done, I stayed for a coffee then headed back to dreamsea, my accommodation. Had some brekkie, wrote postcards home, went for a dip in the sea. Bummed around, had a nap. Eventually got my butt back out there and rode back down to Weligama as the sun had re-emerged. Had a cocktail and some salad on a beach lounge before going back to the same surf school I went to the other day.
Today was a fair bit calmer than Saturday, when I last attempted to surf, and it went really well. Stood up heaps, surfed all the way in to shore a couple times, and was catching waves by myself - rather than having the teacher push me off. I’m also crediting the whisky sour for limbering me up beforehand.
Drove back to Ahangama, dropped off the scooter, and walked the 10 minutes back to my hotel. Passed a fishmonger on the way; found out where all the local cats like to hang. Stopped by the supermarket and bought a fruit nectar juice that I absolutely inhaled - so parched.
Had a swim in the pool, changed, watched sunset. Went across the road to get kottu and a couple of hoppers for dinner. The server didn’t seem convinced when I said I wanted sambol, he knew it was hot. The food was tasty, but they didn’t give me any of the curry gravy or coconut sauce that usually comes with kottu, so it wasn’t quite as delicious as usual. No matter, still tasty. And I had to eat it with my hands… truly becoming a local.
I was already struggling to kill time tonight and we’ve just gone and had a blackout. For some reason the generator isn’t on so they’ve brought around candles. I don’t get great internet in my room - the only thing that really loads is Twitter - and I feel as if I’ve already read all of it today. Sitting on the porch so that I can post this and then maybe I’ll go see if I can read about Jordanian history by candlelight… hopefully this only lasts an hour.

this one’s more of a fic idea than an analysis ask, but what do you think Onni’s POV during adventure 1 would be like if we’d seen more of it?? What was the lad thinking the whole time???
-endearingsalt
In a word or two? Guilt and anxiety.
Onni is painted as this timid, afraid older brother who stays behind out of fear, but that’s not actually that accurate. Yes, Onni stays behind—but then he leaves, on his own, to catch up with the Västerströms in Sweden. Onni, who hasn’t left Keuruu in the last ten years, and hasn’t left Finland ever, ventures out alone.
The interesting thing, though, is that Onni’s entire plotline is pretty stationary, from a purely physical perspective. He has plenty of movements and character moments in the dreamsea, but that’s about it. He spends the vast majority of the adventure just... in the Västerström’s house. (And a good chunk of that he spends in just one room, considering he sleeps on the couch by the radio.)
It’s easy to miss because we don’t see much of Onni’s POV, but Onni and Lalli are distinct foils of one another. Onni faces many of the same choices and hardships as Lalli; Onni is simply the darker outcome.
Let’s start with that physicality: Onni leaves Keuruu, yes, but then plants firmly for the majority of Adventure 1. He doesn’t even leave his dreamspace all that often, comparatively—only when absolutely necessary (I can think of... two instances off the top of my head? When he rescues Lalli and also when Reynir takes him to see Pastor A. Maybe there’s one more.)
Lalli, meanwhile, leaves for the expedition, and also spends a surprising (and perhaps unwise) amount of time outside his area in the dreamsea.
Zooming out, we find more parallels between Onni and Lalli. They experience the same kinds of isolation; it’s just less visible in Onni’s situation.
(Actually, Onni’s experience also fits into the language barrier as a metaphor for neurodivergence paradigm, I just didn’t talk about him in that post. And he also fits nicely into this whole framework as well.)
Onni speaks Icelandic, but it’s not his first language—we know that he has a heavy accent, doesn’t read or write well in Icelandic, and overall seems to struggle with it. So, while he can communicate with the team in Sweden, it doesn’t come easily. Onni and Lalli both experience isolation, and a great deal of that isolation is built into the situation by virtue of intelligibility.
Taking it one step further, Onni and Lalli also experience the same kind of doubt and... almost microaggressions? Because of their magic abilities. No one else around Onni understands his history, no one understands what Onni does, and so no one takes him seriously. Yes he cries, yes he meditates, yes he can talk to Lalli without the radio, he is traumatized and sees ghosts just leave him alone!!
But this defense mechanism works a little too well. We don't see much of Onni's day-to-day during Adventure 1, but, even in those highlights, Onni is largely left alone. His physical needs are taken care of, but does he engage in the emotional and social support of the household? Absolutely not. I give Taru and the Västeströms enough credit to have offered emotional support, someone to talk to, but one, any help offered would be deeply ineffective by virtue of the situation and the people involved, and two, do you think Onni would be even remotely vulnerable with people who are basically strangers? Absolutely not.
So. We've established that Onni and Lalli are foils. They come from similar trauma, have similar skills, and similar weaknesses. (With this relationship there's also a foil point to be drawn between Emil and Reynir in relationship to their respective Finns, but that's a much more divisive post.) But all of this means nothing in the face of the most important difference between Onni and Lalli:
Lalli is ready to change, Onni is not. This is a harder thing to point to directly, because it’s mostly the lack of rather than the presence of something. But, while Onni has his moments of bravery, he is still very afraid, and that fear drives his actions. He’s afraid of change. And, in the end, letting go of his grief and trauma is change. Recovering from mental illness can be terrifying, because it’s a shift in reality. It’s unfamiliar and painful in a new way.
BUT your ask was about Onni's POV in Adventure 1. Taking all of the above, what can we conclude about Onni's subtext and journey?
In a word or two? Guilt and anxiety.
Anxiety because he's not there, and the Kade makes things more difficult and restricts both his and Lalli's movements. Anxiety because this is the first time he's ever been separated from Tuuri and Lalli since they were in quarantine after Saimaa. Anxiety because he thinks of Tuuri and Lalli as little kids, barely able to take care of themselves.
(This doesn't even begin to get into what Onni secretly thinks of himself. He'd never admit it, but Onni doesn't think he can do any of this alone, either. Tuuri and Lalli have lost their support system, but more importantly, Onni has lost his.)
That said, I do think Onni was exercising a lot of discipline during Adventure 1 as well. He could have checked on Lalli every night of the expedition. It's marginally safer for him to cross the dreamsea, and he can move faster. But he didn't. Fear probably played into that, but this also means he refused the fear that wanted him to cling to Lalli. He had so little control over the entire situation; I imagine being able to exert some control over himself was the greatest reassurance he had.
And the guilt? He has guilt because he didn't go. Guilt because he abandoned them.
And that's the thing: Onni believes that he is 100% responsible for Tuuri's death. He didn't go because he was too afraid, and his fear cost Tuuri's life. That's why he leaves in Adventure 2--he has another chance, and he's trying to do the right thing by Lalli.
