A brilliant, yet sad closing of the infamous #dreamaway #lodge in #Becket #MA Owner, and former #actor, Danny Osman, and #Berkshire native and head chef, Amy Loveless, served their last meal Saturday night. After more than 23 years of entertaining the #Berkshire troops and serving exquisite locally sourced food, they had to shutter their beloved Mecca for gourmands around the globe. Like thousands of restaurants across the country, they weathered months of take out and outside dining but it wasn’t enough to keep this gem of a #restaurant afloat. “Even if the pandemic ended now, it would take years for us to get back to “normal” or pre-pandemic,” said Osman. The restaurant has a storied past. It has been rumored to have been a brothel and speakeasy during the depression and in the 70’s was a favorite haunt of Bob Dylan, Joan Baez and the Rolling Thunder Revue. Dylan loved the place so much it was featured in his film, “Renaldo and Clara”. On this night, every table was filled with mask wearing patrons from #Boston, #newyorkcity and everywhere in between. Danny, and his hard working staff cheerfully served the crowds. We ran into old friends but there were no hugs, yet lots of elbow bumps and proclamations of love, as we were serenaded by the sublime Hudson Valley band, The Mammals. #dreamawaylodge #covid19 #business #berkshires #restaurant (at Dream Away Lodge) https://www.instagram.com/p/CE2qYREj5Io/?igshid=111vz17z0315j

When I was still living in New Zealand, I was a (literally award-winning) youth worker for the #YMCA. Technically my title was "youth empowerment coordinator", and this job meant the world to me. ❤ As someone who, as a teenager, struggled with #depression, drug addiction losing people to suicide, alcoholism and sexual abuse, it has always been important to me to do my part - through #music, public speaking and whatever else I can do - to empower young people around me to be resilient, strong and positive humans. 💪🏽 In fact, I was still doing this kind of work when I first moved to the United States; working as a hiking director for a camp in Massachusetts, and using the short time I had with each group of girls to teach them skills on how to be #badass. 🤘🏽 It's now been over three years ago that I left that job, so you can imagine my surprise (and delight) when a group of #girlscouts came along to our show last night at The Dreamaway Lodge in Becket, MA - just 2miles away from that same first camp of mine! 👩🏽‍🎤 Turns out they make a trip to Becket every year in winter to go sledding, but had to postpone their trip a month to this weekend. The scout leaders did some research, discovered our show, looked into my music, were thrilled to see that my lyrics and messages are all about the values that they were covering this same weekend (consent, power balances in relationships, and authenticity), ran my music past the parents, and our show somehow turned into a massive YOU ARE A BADASS fest of laughter, love and bubbles. 😊 Literally. We gave the girls bubbles to blow. It was magick. Huge thank you to everyone who came along to see @joeyjdrums, @djrealitycheck and me perform at The Dreamaway last night. The magick you brought, and the fire we created as a result was heart warmingly beautiful. . Special thanks to Josh Reynolds who came along to share some of his own musical creations, and to Joey for donning his @silenceechoez hat, and performing some of his own original gorgeous fight-back songs as well! #notjustadrummer Oh What A Night 🤘🏽 (at Dream Away Lodge) https://www.instagram.com/p/BvrkTnohLHc/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=m0jftfn2tn7o

"Where are your friends tonight?"
Tumblr media
"You spent the first five years trying to get with the plan, and the next five years trying to be with your friends again."
—LCD Soundsystem Tonight is one of those nights that reinforces for me: I'm doing something right with my life at the moment. No epiphany, no major event, just a soft, smiling observation. I caught Erin McKeown play an all-request set at the legendary Dreamaway Lodge, hidden in the woods of Becket, Massachusetts. (Check out my review of the show in next week's Metroland.) Fewer than fifty people crowded into what's essentially a living room (of a former brothel), and Erin pulled requests out of a top hat. There were some wonderful people who had driven from around New England (in in one case, Montreal) for the show, a couple sort-of friends, and a couple people I think will be my friends in the future. On the whole, it felt extremely comfortable. That's kind of what I'm looking for. To be in a room with people and feel like everything fits. (Not, for instance, to sit in a room and feel absent—which can happen.)
Tumblr media
I find myself in this converted brothel watching Erin pick songs from a hat having entered entirely the freestyle part of my life, where I have been for 4.5 years now. This was not charted out at any point. I didn't expect to live in or to like the country, but it turns out I am and I do. There are some very fine elements to the lifestyle here, and as long as I have access to The City and The (Bean)Town, it's a balance that works. I originally came here for a particular job, but have since moved to a different one, and I've lived in three different places. So I officially live here. It took a couple years to say that. I can't foretell how long I'll stay, but right now it definitely feels right. I'm a big believer in noticing the good old days while they're happening. They don't require the sepia tones of selective memory to take form. Today I visited three independently owned stores in downtown Pittsfield; I purchased a t-shirt created by a local design studio, a book by a local author (from a national publishing house), and some beautiful holiday cards designed and printed by hand by a local outfit. (Then, yes, to the mall—there's no local creator of CD-R spindles or bulk paper towels.) And it was not a self-conscious process, I just went out and got some things I wanted. Every day on the way to work I drive by the cows who create the milk and butter I use. (Okay, I don't know this right down to the cow, but it's the same farm—it counts.) Isn't that sexy, in some sort of bovine chic way? (Now, even when I visit my perfectly nice, little hometown, it feels like an unbroken chain of strip malls. It isn't—quite—but these days I see our degrading culture with fresh eyes.) This is now a time in my life when I have things like a High School reunion to contend with (and I bother for some reason to be cagey about what number, as if the hidden fact it was my 15th is somehow incriminating). I can appreciate a good pair of wool socks. I get genuinely excited about roasted brussel sprouts. I attend a simple rock concert in a hockey arena and end up flirting with a bout of atypical pneumonia and perhaps finally, finally, developing a(n apparently mild) dose of tinnitus. Heading away from the Dreamaway Lodge tonight, I put on LCD Soundsystem's "All My Friends." Its jittery piano figure paced my drive along the icy, curving challenge of County Road in Becket. (I think the tune was fluffed beyond all recognition when it came out two years ago, but it's clearly a very strong song.) The most boring, reductionist way to describe it is to say it's about transcending the alienation triggered by pursuit of the party impulse while fulfilling the very real need to feel connection amongst a peer group.  To paraphrase the central query of the song: Where are my friends tonight? Well, they're in Portland (Oregon and Maine), Los Angeles, Santa Fe, San Francisco, Denver, New York City, Boston... and North Egremont, Massachusetts. Few of them I see every day, or even necessarily every week. Some, just a couple times a year (if that). But in an age when, I'll admit, the Saturday nights filled with exciting art and performance and good fellowship are at least balanced out by the ones offering a treat because of the chance to stay in the warm indoors and blaze through a couple episodes of Curb Your Enthusiasm, it's a pace I can deal with.  Probably because the time we spend together is quality time, perhaps in a way such time was not in the past. When I steal an hour to sit in the living room of my best friend and her just-as-wonderful spouse, we can talk about the dividends of some emotional investment or about the raw milk yogurt they made yesterday, and it almost doesn't matter. We're each there. We love each other (well, I'll speak for myself—I love them) and our lives are enriched simply by the others' presence. (So does meaning spring from the act of creating the potential for absence?) Yes, I aim to be a world class writer. (What else would be the point?) I want my novel to change people's lives and inspire them. I want to write about music and theatre and art and Himalayan salt importing in a way that makes the reader feel such stuff is present in the room, wherever (s)he may be. But I also want the chance to see an excellent songwriter play music in a room full of still-strangers and sort-of friends, and feel like I have a place there. I don't need to be feted, just to feel like I'm part of the ecosystem. That I'm present. Or at the very least, I'd like to be offered some raw milk yogurt from time to time.
...This is officially a ramble, but hey, I'll let it fly. All I'm saying is, it was a good night, in a soft way I can only complicate by throwing words at. I'm privileged to have these sorts of experiences. Sometimes a great show is assembled by simply pulling requests out of a hat.
