How to stop a dripping toilet tank

A dripping toilet is not only a nuisance, it also wastes water - up to 760 litres per day. It also wastes energy, as electricity is needed to run water into the pipes and maintain pressure. Unless the tank is cracked, as indicated by a pool of water on the floor, fixing a leak in the toilet is a simple matter that costs little, if anything. The leak occurs either because the tank is overflowing or because water is dripping into the bowl through a damaged flapper.

Remove the tank cap and observe the water level. If it is at the level of the overflow pipe, it is too high and the water is probably draining into the pipe. Restore the water level by adjusting the float, which is either attached to the overflow pipe or consists of a ball at the end of a metal rod.

Turn off the water valve under the toilet tank and flush the toilet to empty the tank. Move the stop guide down about one centimeter in the overflow pipe if your float is attached to the pipe. If you have a ball float, you can make two adjustments.

Turn the rod to which the ball is attached with pliers until the bend in the middle points upwards and the ball sits lower in the tank. If the rod has no bend, unscrew the ball to lengthen the rod. The rod will then exert more force on the water valve and close it faster.

Turn on the water after you have made the adjustments and check the water level. You may need to repeat this process to optimise the level. The valve should close when the water level is one inch below the top of the overflow pipe.

Check the baffle when water drains into the bowl. However, if you are not sure, put some blue disinfectant in the tank and wait a few hours before flushing the toilet. The flapper is leaking if the water in the bowl turns blue.

Flush the toilet and check that the chain holding the flapper is long enough for it to catch when it falls into the valve. If not, loosen the chain and lengthen it.

Replace the flap if it is fully seated but still leaking. Loosen the chain connecting the flapper to the flush handle and remove the flapper by pulling the rubber tabs off the posts on the overflow pipe. Hang a new baffle plate in the posts and connect it to the chain.

The Three Gables

The lack of posts on this one is a clear demonstration of the clear rejection of the racism running through this story.

I can't say that I'm particularly enthusiastic about doing this one, but I can't pretend this one doesn't exist.

Here we go then:

First published in 1926, the Americans again got this one first.

Boxing for money was heavily regulated to the point of outright bans in much of the United States; illegal fights would frequently end as "no contest" when the police turned up.

The Bull Ring in Birmingham is a major shopping area that goes back to a market established in 1154 under royal approval. The area is named for a ring of iron that bulls were tied to for the purposes of bull-baiting, a 'sport' banned in 1835.

The area was redeveloped in the 1960s into an enclosed shopping centre considered an epitome of Brutalist architecture and which became more unpopular over time. It was replaced in 2003 by a more modern centre, branded "Bullring" that is just as controversial.

Harrow Weald is a suburban area of what is now Greater London. It still contains a large amount of ancient woodland despite major development in the early 1930s, such as Harrow Weald Common.

One highly notable resident of the area was W.S. Gilbert of operetta fame, who lived at a house called Grim's Dyke and died of a heart attack in the lake in 1911 while saving a 17-year-old girl from drowning during a swimming lesson. The lake was mostly drained after that and what is left was filled with algae during my visit to the area early this year - the London Loop footpath goes through the area.

The "Weald Station" is probably, as per Bernard Davies, Harrow & Wealdstone station. This is today the northern terminus of the Bakerloo Line, which reached there in 1917 when services were extended on the newly electrified lines to Watford Junction; London Overground services call there on their way to the latter destination. LNWR and Southern services also are available, while Avanti West Coast and Caledonian Sleeper trains go through without stopping on platforms generally closed unless a train is calling there.

The station was also the site of the worst peacetime rail disaster in British history in 1952 (only the 1915 Quintinshill rail disaster has a higher death toll) - an express train collided with the rear of a local train in fog and then another express train hit the wreckage. 112 people died and 340 were injured. Since the crew of the express train died in the crash, the precise reason why they failed to respond to two signals was impossible to establish. The result of the report was a faster introduction into service of the Automatic Warning System or AWS that gives a driver an in-cab indication of the state of a signal by visual and auditory means.

A two-station branch line to Stanmore Village closed in 1964 as part of the Beeching cuts.

Paregoric is a 4% tincture of opium, then available over the counter without prescription. Its main uses would be for treating diarrhoea, treating teething pains in children and as a cough medicine. It is today a Schedule III controlled substance in the US i.e. prescription only.

Crown Derby refers to Royal Crown Derby, a porcelain company founded c.1750 and still going today; it may be the oldest still active company in that field in England.

Langdale Pike is clearly a pseudonym, referring to a series of peaks in the Lake District.

This is, fortunately, the only time we have the n-word being used in the canon. It was considered a crude term even then.

Pernambuco is a state in NE Brazil, then a centre of sugarcane cultivation, still a major part of its economy. It was historically Portuguese, not Spanish.

Yes, let's stereotype Latina women, shall we, Mr. Doyle? I'm not calling you Sir Arthur in this discussion; you're not acting like a knight.

This whole thing leaves a rather ugly taste and if I could strike a story from the canon, I would do it for this one.

LUCY & THE IRS!

Tax Day in the Lucyverse

"In this world, nothing is certain except death and taxes” ~ Benjamin Franklin, 1789

Although Lucycoms never joked about death, taxes were fair game - usually! Here are a few examples.

“The Absolute Truth” (1949) ~ Liz (Lucille Ball) and George (Richard Denning) bet each other that they can each go for 24 hours without telling a lie. George thinks Liz is trying to trick him into lying by sending a man to his office disguised as an IRS agent. Surely George will lie about his taxable income. George calls Liz to tell her he knows about her scheme. He is schocked when Liz says she didn’t send anyone to see him! George realizes he told the IRS all the details of his tax returns thinking he is talking to an impersonator!

When this episode was re-written for “I Love Lucy” as “Lucy Tells the Truth” (1953), the end of the episode featured Ricky fibbing about his taxes to an IRS agent. In the un-filmed scene we learn that Ricky went to Kentucky to play with the band, and won some money at the Kentucky Derby, which he failed to report. IRS agent Mr. Miller was to be played by Charles Lane, who specialized in authority figures.

Desi Arnaz refused to do the seen as written, feeling that Ricky would never cheat the government. He reasoned that it reflected poorly on immigrants and didn’t want people to think it was the sort of thing that he (Desi) condoned. He was grateful to be an American and (at the height of his success) he was determined to show that the American Dream was achievable. The scene was re-written and Lane was recast as a talent agent who witnesses Lucy participate in a knife-throwing act.

“Liz and the Green Wig” (1950) ~ George decides she can eliminate the $10 a week from Liz’s budget if he eliminates the money she’s spending on her hair. Liz buys a green wig to show George what might happen if she dyed her hair at home. Liz is tells Katie the maid (Ruth Perrott) that it is time for George to review her household accounts for the previous year for the income tax people, and she knows she hasn’t managed to save any money.

“Lucy Gets Ricky on the Radio” (1953) ~ Lucy thinks Ricky is a Cuban brainiac, so she gets them on a radio quiz show. To be sure he wins, she steals the answers. But then the questions are changed!

Originally, the first question was: “To whom do you make your federal tax check out on March 15?” but instead Fillmore asks “What is the name of the animal that fastens itself to you and drains you of your blood?” The answer Lucy memorized and blurts out is “The collector of Internal Revenue” when the real answer is “A vampire bat.” As a side note, Tax Day was set on March 1st in 1913. It was moved to March 15th in 1918 before being finally being set as April 15th in 1955.

“The Camping Trip” (1953) ~ Trying to make conversation, Ricky asks Lucy “What do you think of the new tax law?”

In 1952, President Eisenhower proposed reorganization of tax laws, including re-naming the Bureau of the Internal Revenue the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Most importantly, starting in 1954, he changed the date tax returns were due from March 15th to April 15th.

“First Stop” (1955) ~ On the way to Hollywood, the gang’s only choice for food and lodging is One Oak Cabin and Cafe. Proprietor Mr. Skinner (Olin Howard) charges the foursome $4.80 for four stale cheese sandwiches, eighty cents of which is entertainment tax. When the gang questions the extra charge, Mr. Skinner croons a bit of "I'm Afraid to Come Home in the Dark” accompanying himself on the banjo. Rather than listen, they pay up and try to leave.

In 1957, Ingrid Bergman was talked about as the star of the second “Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour” “The Celebrity Next Door”, but tax problems prevented her from signing the contract. The script was re-written for Bette Davis, who withdrew at the last moment due to injury and was replaced by Tallulah Bankhead.

In December 1965, Lucille Ball was in tax court for back taxes, but emerged without paying a penny.

“Lucy, the Stockholder” (1965) ~ Lucy gets a letter from the Internal Revenue which turns out to be an income tax refund of $38.23. She decides to invest it all in the stock market and pays a visit to a nervous broker (Harvey Korman). When he finally hears that she has just $38.23 he nearly has a nervous breakdown.

Lucy is so grateful for her refund that she wants to send “Lyndon” a thank you note. Lyndon Baines Johnson was the 36th President of the United States, assuming office from the Vice Presidency after the assassination of John F. Kennedy.

Yours, Mine and Ours (1968) ~ Lucille Ball hadn’t anticipated the film’s huge box-office success and failed to provide a tax shelter for her personal profits, resulting in most of her earnings going toward taxes. It is said this caused the redhead a good deal of consternation.

“Lucy Visits Jack Benny” (1968) ~ Jack Benny has turned his Palm Springs home into a hotel, and the Carters have made a reservation. Benny only charges $3 a night for rooms, but adds on 'extra charges' like eleven cents for towel rental - one penny of which is sales tax! When Lucy balks at paying a penny tax, Benny replies “Go fight with Ronald Reagan!” Former Hollywood actor Ronald Reagan had been elected Governor of California in 1967.

“Lucy and the Raffle” (1971) ~ Kim wins a sports car in a raffle, but Lucy won't let her keep it. To pay the taxes on her win, they hold another raffle not knowing that it is illegal. Paul Picerni plays IRS Agent Frank Williams.

“Lucy’s Bonus Bounces” (1971) ~ On advice from his psychiatrist (Parley Baer), Harry gives Lucy a $50 raise. But when Harry is visited by IRS Agent William McPherson (Paul Picerni), things get personal. Picerni plays his second IRS Agent in less than a year!

When the IRS Agent starts to focus on Lucy instead of Harry, Harry immediately suggests she be hauled off to prison!

“Funny Money” (2019) ~ CBS presents two newly-colorized episodes of “I Love Lucy”: “Bonus Bucks” and “The Million Dollar Idea” (both 1954). The Press Release touted that the special would relieve “Tax Day Blues”.

Summary: Accidentally, scientist Tankhun Theerapanyakul embarrassed footballer Captain Chan "Daddy" Knight in front of his coach, teammates and fans. He had to fulfill three tasks from the captain before his apology was accepted.

Chapter 11

(Chan POV)

The Next Day

Chan got up from his bed slowly and in pain. It had been a long time since the last time he had had to compress his thighs and calves with ice like this, and it truly makes Chan feel his age, all 36 of it. But BSFC's victory over Bangkok United in yesterday's match was really sweet and Chan wouldn’t have it any other way. Moreover, not many professional athletes in his age could continue to compete at the top level like this, most of them had to give up their careers because their skills have drastically decreased, or some even had to retire early due to injuries. Chan realized he was one of the luckiest, and for that he was very grateful. So, no complaint whatsoever from him.

Chan was just about to consume a huge portion of vegetables-fruits-protein powder smoothie that had just been blended, when his cell phone rang. It was Don.

“Coach?”

“How are your thigh and calf muscles? I hope you've iced them.”

“Already did, Coach,” answered Chan while shaking his head in wonder. “I guess, nothing escaped your scrutiny.”

“Chan, I’ve been training you for almost 14 years, of course I’m aware of your condition. Just like I’m aware that you drained all your energy to guard that United midfielder, ” stated Don. "If it weren't for the fact that I knew yesterday's derby meant a lot to you, I would have stopped you.”

“Thank you, Coach.”

“Overstraining your leg muscles at your age is not a wise choice, especially when you intend to play in all the games this season.”

“Understood, Sir.”

“It's a good thing that next weekend there will be no match because of International Friendly, so you can rest more.”

“Yes, Coach,” responded Chan. “What can I do for you, Sir?”

“Ah yes. Saturday morning, people from management came to the training ground to give you a notice, but you weren't there yet, so they gave it to me. Since that day we were all so focused on the derby match, I forgot to pass on their message to you.”

“Oh, what message?”

“The National Football Federation has decided to give you a special award to honor your outstanding professional football career.”

Chan was stunned for a moment, he knew he had a good career as a footballer, but never expected the National Federation would want to award him with such a high honor. He felt very flattered and grateful at the same time.

“Chan? Are you there?”

“I’m here, Coach. It’s just that… I don’t really know what to say…”

“You deserved it. When I told you, you’re my pride and glory, it wasn’t lip service, you know that, right?” Again, Chan was stunned. Don is more than just a coach for him, he’s like a father figure, a mentor.

“Coach, I…”

“I’m sure Mr. Krisda already told you about the BSFC offer.”

“Coach…”

“Wait, I'm not done talking... I’m also aware that you want a long break from football. The point is, once you're ready, BSFC is also ready to accept you as part of my coaching team. I'm waiting.”

“Hn,” responded Chan curtly because he knew if he spoke any more than this his voice would crack. Even now, he was having a hard time holding back his emotions.

“Okay, I better leave you and your super healthy smoothie.”

Chan chuckled.

“Coach, if I didn't know better, I'd think you had planted a secret camera here to spy on me.”

“What makes you sure I don't plant one? Good day, Chan!”

“Have a good Sunday, Coach.”

Chan was still filled with disbelief as he finished the smoothie. Usually after breakfast, he would do light exercise and cardio, but he decided to skip it today. He will allow his muscles to rest for the next 24 hours. As he was contemplating what he was going to do to spend his Sunday, the notification on his cellphone rang again. It was a message from the architect firm, asking his permission to call him. Chan decided to just give them a call right away.

Three Days Later

New Message from Caramello

Tankhun's eyebrows rose in response to seeing a new message notification from Chan, the first in eighteen days, but who's counting, right? Tankhun ignored the voice in his heart that suspiciously laughed at him just now and immediately opened the message from the footballer.

[Caramello]

Ready for ur second task?

Tankhun let out a grunt although inside he was very curious. Before he could reply though, a new message from Chan appeared again.

[Caramello]

Still giving me the silent treatment?

[Tankhun T]

Please ... you’re not that important for me to give you the silent treatment. I'm just busy.

[Caramello]

Ouch!

Tankhun smiled.

[Caramello]

I'll pick you up Saturday at 7.50 AM. Be ready!

7.50 AM!? Is he mad?

[Tankhun T]

Not so fast, mister. You'd better have a good reason for ruining my weekend, and you should tell me clearly what task I have to do. Do you even know my home address?

[Caramello]

Next Saturday 07:30 AM

As soon as Tankhun saw Kinn and Porsche having breakfast with Pa in the dining room, he's 100% sure that his suspicions last Wednesday – regarding who had informed Chan their home address, confirmed.

Nosy bastards.

“Good morning… looks like someone still hasn't given up on meddling in my business,” jibed Tankhun, face full of accusation.

“Good morning, son.”

“Good morning, Tankhun.”

“What do you mean, P'? We missed you, Pa, and Kim, so we decided to have breakfast here today,” Porsche replied, his face guilt-free, his lips curled into a wide beaming smile, his eyes as mischievous as an imp.

Ugh, this lil shit.

“Tankhun, come, Kinn and Porsche bring your favorite fried dough stick to eat with the porridge,” requested Pa, as he patted the seat on his right side. “Let’s eat while it’s still hot.”

“Yes, Pa,” answered Tankhun, obeying his Pa’s request. “Where’s Kim?”

“Still sleeping, I guess, but I’m about to wake him up now,” said Kinn. “We haven’t had breakfast together like this for a while.”

Kinn left the dining table to go upstairs to wake their youngest brother.

The mischievous look in Porsche's eyes grew even more intense, and suddenly Tankhun realized the real reason for his brother and brother-in-law's visit to the house early in the morning. Tankhun couldn't help himself not to feel amusement, his pouting had turned into a smile, while continuing to enjoy his favorite fried dough sticks.

"It's going to be spectacular, P'," promised Porsche. “You look great, by the way. Special occasion?”

“Shut up,” replied Tankhun, chuckling at the thought of what would happen soon. His brothers were his weakness, he could never be angry with them for long.

"It's the weekend, and I don't have practice today, why do I have to eat breakfast so early?" Kim grumbled as he entered the dining room and took a seat next to Tankhun. His fairly long hair was tangled, and Tankhun reflexively straightened and combed it with his fingers.

"You haven't washed your face, have you?" asked Tankhun.

"This is your punishment for waking me up so early, please enjoy my face that is still full of drool," replied Kim, still feeling annoyed. "Good morning, Pa."

“Morning, Kim.”

Kinn had just returned to his seat next to Porsche when the doorbell rang.

“Ah, right on time,” said Porsche, looking meaningfully at Tankhun.

"Kim, would you please be a sweetheart and open the door?" asked Tankhun sweetly.

“But whyyyy~ I haven’t even had a drop of water,” wailed the youngest Theerapanyakun boys.

“Pretty please?” pleaded Tankhun again, puppy eyes in full force.

“Sometimes I really hate being the youngest, you all take advantage of me,” Kim protested as he got up from his seat and walked towards the door.

Tankhun, Kinn, and Porsche were following Kim slowly, trying hard to keep him from noticing that they were trailing behind him.

“Good morning, is this the Theerapanyakul residence?”

“Holy Shit!” Kim shouted as he slammed the door loudly.

“Umm, Kim… you do realize you just slammed the door in your favorite captain's face, right?” asked Porsche, desperately holding back his laughter seeing Kim's shocked face.

“HOLY SHIT!!!”

Celebrating the Centennial of Ernie Kovacs by Susan King

Ernie Kovacs was television’s first performance artist who turned the medium into his personal playground. His comedy was surreal, innovative, brilliant and at times just plain weird. Just look at the Nairobi Trio: three non-speaking apes wearing long coats and derby hats who played music and hit each other on the head to Robert Maxwell’s “Solfeggio” or blackout bits set to the German-language version of “Mack the Knife.”

When NBC gave Kovacs a live 30-minute color special in 1957, he decided to make “The Silent Show”; only the introduction and Dutch Masters commercials featured dialogue. He presented gorilla ballerinas dancing to Tchaikovsky’s “Swan Lake” in his 1959 NBC special “Kovacs on Music.”

This year marks Kovacs’ centennial. Unfortunately, his fans never had the opportunity to watch him grow and mature as an artist. He was happily married to singer/actress Edie Adams, who was also his frequent partner in comedic crime, and he was the devoted father of three daughters when he died on Jan 13, 1962, just 10 days before his 43rd birthday. Kovacs’ car crashed into a power pole on the rain drenched Beverly Glen and Santa Monica Boulevards on his way home from a party at Billy Wilder’s house.

When Kovacs began on television in the early 1950s, the medium was young and populated with series starring veteran comics such as Milton Berle, Red Skelton, George Burns and Gracie Allen, Jack Benny and Jackie Gleason.

Kovacs, who always seemed to have a cigar in his hand, offered something new and completely different.

“He was able to create television almost directly from his own imagination, from his own mind,” said Ron Simon, curator of the Paley Center for Media, in a 2011 interview I conducted with him for a Kovacs piece in the Los Angeles Times. “Television is so much of a collaborative art, but Kovacs made his TV very personal.”

Kovacs, added Simon, also realized that “there was a total falsity to being in everyone’s living room. His great sign-off line, ‘It’s been real,’ is so ironic. He understood, it’s not real at all.” Of his fourth, seventh, eighth and final episode of his ABC specials showing on TCM, the last aired after his death, an episode he had complete creative control over thanks to sponsor Dutch Masters.

Simon maintained they “redefined what we think of media. The specials are so strange. There was no linear narrative.”

Three specials illustrate his love of music. He sets Bela Bartok’s music to a silent New York street scene and George Gershwin’s “Concerto in F” to a sequence involving women dressing for their dates. Bits include a turkey coming to life and a hand coming out of a bathtub drain.

“Nobody could figure out how his mind worked,” his late publicist Henri Bollinger told me in 2011. “I am talking about people who worked with him. He would do things that made absolutely no sense. He never had a script, or at least he never had a script that he showed anybody. He would go about and say, ‘We’re going to do this, we are going to do that.’ I couldn’t figure out what it was going to be about until we actually saw the show. The end result would be mind-boggling.”

Kovacs made 10 films from 1957-1961 and though his roles never allowed him to show his experimental, surreal side, he’s always fun to watch and tackled his roles with great gusto.

He made three films with his good friend Jack Lemmon, most notably the 1957 service comedy OPERATION MAD BALL, which marked his film debut, and 1958’s bewitching comedy BELL, BOOK AND CANDLE. Also of note is his 1960 service comedy WAKE ME WHEN IT’S OVER and the rarely seen 1961 comedy FIVE GOLDEN HOURS, which was Kovacs’ only lead and his favorite performance.

Kovacs was a larger-than-life figure in reel-life and real-life. He often took projects because he owed money in back taxes. He loved playing poker with his Hollywood buddies, and by all reports, Kovacs was a great guy.

“I just thought he was the sweetest man,” said Jolene Brand, who appeared in his ABC specials.

There’s little wonder why his headstone at Forest Lawn states: “Nothing in Moderation.”
