Dragon's Dogma 2 Sphinx Guide
Here is the easiest way to do the Sphinx in DD2 with minimum hassle. spoilers for the Game of Wits quest beneath
So before you go to the first location, you're gonna need a few things. Bring a port crystal to make things easier and set it down near her.
1. Sphinx Mother OR Sphinx Father pawn in your party (if you're unsure it's the correct ones, their Arisen will be listed as CAPCOM)
2. an item you want to duplicate (i recommend a portcrystal, you get one as a reward)
3. any NPC who you have max affinity with (your main pawn can also work for this one)
4. the location of the first Seeker Token you picked up
anyway, onto the riddles.
Mountain Shrine:
Riddle of Eyes:
step through the door and turn to your right, go up the small path and open the chest to get the Sealing Phial (DO NOT USE IT). You can do the full dungeon if you want, it's just some Hobgoblins and an Ogre in the basement, not much in the way of loot. present the Sealing Phial to the sphinx, and claim your reward.
REWARD: Wakestone
Riddle of Madness:
pick up your max affinity NPC or main pawn and set them on the pedestal with you, then talk to the sphinx.
REWARD: Portcrystal
Riddle of Wisdom:
pick up your Sphinx Mother or Sphinx Father pawn and set them on the pedestal with you, then talk to the sphinx.
REWARD: 1200 Rift Crystals
Riddle of Conviction:
hand over any item in your inventory that you want duplicated, again i'd recommend the portcrystal.
REWARD: Duplicate of your item
Riddle of Rumination:
now for the hard one. the sphinx will give you 7 in game days to return to where you found your first Seeker Token, and pick up the Finder Token to return to her. There is no way to check where the first you found was, you just have to remember.
Mine was in a harpy nest somewhere around the Borderwatch Outpost
Tumblr media
Once you find the token, return it to the sphinx and she'll move to the Frontier Shrine. REWARD: 3 Ferrystones
Important info for the next shrine:
You're going to want a portcrystal in Bakbattahl before starting the next shrine, and one in the border town if you're lazy like me
Grab a handful of ferrystones because you're gonna need them
Switch your vocation to Archer BEFORE the final riddle i cannot stress how important this part is to getting the final reward
I would highly recommend sleeping at an inn or your home before starting the Frontier Shrine as a backup
Frontier Shrine:
Riddle of Reunion:
finding her was the riddle, so claim your prize from the first chest
REWARD: 100,000 Gold
Riddle of Futility:
WARNING: FAILING THIS PART WILL BAR YOU FROM THE REST OF THE QUEST. REST AT AN INN OR YOUR HOUSE (NOT A CAMP) BEFORE BEGINNING THIS RIDDLE
Tumblr media
the sphinx will ask you to carry a pot from the Frontier Shrine to a man named Maurits in Bakbattahl, if it breaks you fail the quest. THE JAR DOES NOT RESPAWN, YOU WILL HAVE TO WAIT UNTIL NEW GAME+ TO FINISH THIS QUEST. the easy way to do this is to go to Bakbattahl, find Maurits in the Mural Byway, pick him up and use a ferrystone to transport you two to the Frontier Shrine portcrystal. set him down near the pot to complete the riddle.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
behold. Maurits.
REWARD: Eternal Bond
Riddle of Differentiation:
the sphinx will show you an NPC, immediately screenshot what they look like just in case. the NPC always looks the same EXCEPT FOR THE HAIR.
if their hair is straight, it's Dante on the Vermund side of the border gate in the checkpoint town. (i do not have a picture of Dante, unfortunately)
if their hair is curly, it's Vergil on the Battahl side of the border gate (the log entry for Vergil says he is in Bakbattahl, he is not)
Tumblr media
so, grab your twin and ferrystone them back to the Frontier Shrine, bring them onto the pedestal with you and talk to the sphinx
REWARD: Whimsical Daydream
Riddle of Contest:
the sphinx gives you a ring that lowers your damage to the minimum and challenges you to fight a guard. pick up the guard and throw him off the cliff, she'll laugh and grant you your reward.
REWARD: Ring of Ambition
Riddle of Recollection:
the sphinx asks you to pile stone statues in front of her equal to the number of riddles she has asked you. just add 5 + number of chests you have open in the Frontier Shrine. pile them around the pedestal and talk to her.
REWARD: Arrow of Unmaking
immediately after answering the final riddle, she will begin to fly away to leave, and this is where being an archer comes in. equip the Arrow of Unmaking and shoot the sphinx with it. she will die immediately and thank you for the game and drop the key to the large golden chest. pick it up and claim your final reward.
REWARD: Eternal Wakestone

Dragons Dogma 2 Spoilers
If you saw my previous post talking about the brilliance in Villainy that is Grigori then you know what the deal with Dragons are in this universe. But the TLDR is Dragons are Fallen Arisen made subject to the Will of their Universe. In the original game this was a benevolent role as Dragons found those of great Will to take the place of the previous Guardian of the Universe, The Seneschal.
However this is slightly different in DD2 The Dragons are still Arisen but their master isn’t the Seneschal nor does the Seneschal exist as Guardian. Instead the Dragons and the Universe are ruled by a Tyrant called The Pathfinder. Unlike the Seneschal Pathfinder doesn’t value Free Will and if anything it’s an enemy to its plans for the Universe.
The World exists in Perfect Order and the Cycle of Arisen and Dragon keep that Order by their conflict instilling Fear and Awe. Rather than fight for themselves or the world they place their lives solely in the Arisen and wait like Sheep for the clash to happen time and time again. Looking for a new hero to command them. Pathfinder finds this favorable because everyone in their story has a part to play in how the world functions and those without purpose are removed.
It isn’t until you disrupt this tyrannical Order as Arisen, Slay the Dragon and then Slay Pathfinder for defying the Narrative they laid out for you. It is by strength of will you do this and by strength of will that you empower your Pawn and give them Free Will in turn. The final word of Pathfinder is “a new story has begun and I won’t be there to see it” the new story is The First Game. You overthrew the will of this universe with your own you’re the Arisen that defeated a God with the power of your Will. You are the first Seneschal.
Dragons Dogma 2 is a Prequel.

james' first cycle you say? there were multiple? what happened 👁👁👂
Thank you so much for asking!! I'll get to answering my other asks soon I've just been trapped in a cycle (lol) of low motivation and forgetfulness ;-;.
For the sake of not rambling on forever, I'll mostly just talk about what happened during his first cycle. There's about four cycles that fit within his story, but the first is certainly the most miserable.
The first cycle, James's need for recognition and respect influence everything he does as Arisen. He tries to be the most "perfect" version of an Arisen that there could be, rescuing travelers from monsters whenever possible, acting as an ambassador for the elves, completing all of Brant's quests thoroughly and efficiently- but deep down, he doesn't really care much for the Arisen's responsibilities, especially the ones that have him interacting with the Vernworth politics.
He feels that he can't tell anyone about his problems without ruining his reputation, though- save for Allen. Even though he treats Allen as a lowly servant most of the time in the first cycle, Allen is also the only one he thinks is "safe" enough to confess his real feelings to. Though only secretly, he feels fond of his pawn and treats him much more as an equal in private.
James continues to fulfill his duties as Arisen with excellence- until it is time for his ultimate task, to face the dragon. He refuses the dragon's deal, as a proper hero should. He fights the dragon. And he fails. He almost dies, but Allen saves him (despite his master's objections.)
James refuses to return to Vernworth for proper treatment, too fearful of the consequences and judgemental stares he has earned from his failure. Instead, he chooses to seclude himself in one of the run-down shacks outside of Vernworth, begrudgingly allowing Allen to treat him.
One day, Allen leaves on a routine trip to get supplies and doesn't come back. Thanks to Allen's attentive care, James has been recovering, but he isn't well enough to walk all the way into the city to see where his pawn might be, so he waits. A few days later, and scales have started to push through his bandages. He scratches them off, hoping that it's just some strange disease.
A few more days pass. He's run out of food and water, and realized that Allen isn't coming back. He goes out to find food on his own, trying hard not to look at the new patches of scales that have sprung up all over, and the way his nails have started growing into sharp tips.
More time passes, but he stops counting the passage of days. It doesn't matter anymore. He's been trying to scratch off the scales and break the horns that are growing off of him like a parasitic fungus, but they're growing back faster than he can get rid of them. Some bandits come one morning, and he goes out to fight them- Finally, he thinks, someone to put me out of my misery. However, as they cry "Monster!" and slash at him with their weapons, his mind goes blank with rage. He wakes up, disoriented, the remains of the bandits strewn across the clearing. He has blood in his mouth and he knows it's not his own.
(suicide attempt tw)
He runs back to the shack where his pack is and pulls out his sword. Though his hands tremble, he guides it to the one spot where the scales haven't covered yet- the center of his chest. It's the last solution he has to his problems, and it'd save everyone from him. Truly a heroic death. He drives the blade home, and loses consciousness…
Every slight against him, he remembers. All of the voices that ever spoke down to him spin in his mind, mocking him, making his blood boil. He hates them. His family, the knights, the consul… his eyes fly open, the remnants of the run-down shack exploding away as he stretches his wings and takes flight. The city looks tiny below him. He zeroes in on the resplendent manor from his youth, and catapults his body into it. People run and scream, some bowing at his feet as they cover their heads. Finally he has the respect he deserves.
Time barely seems to pass at the volcanic island encampment. The only markers Allen has are the progress they've made in clearing the rest of the tower. The pawns are being worked twice as hard as they were before the fateful day the dragon descended, their jailers taking the frustration of the failures of that day out on them. Though he can barely think through the pain of the godsway in his mind, Allen feels regret heavy in his chest. If only he could find a way to send a letter out, to assure his master that he hadn't intended to abandon him.
As he's setting down another rock, he hears the guards yelling about something. Looking up, a giant shadow has descended upon the encampment- a drake. The guards run for the ballistas as the drake swats aside the ones who tried to hit it in melee range. The drake doesn't stay interested in them though- it turns and moves directly towards Allen. As it grasps him in its claws, several ballista bolts pierce into it, one scoring a direct hit into the gaping wound on its chest. It lets out a wail and takes off, still cupping Allen in its claws.
As the drake flies, it speaks into Allen's mind. "We're even now. A life for a life," it says. The voice is familiar to him- it is his master's. Blood is trickling down from his heart, spilling onto Allen. The pawn tries to beg him to land so he can help heal him, but his voice is whisked away by the wind.
The drake finally staggers in its flight, wrapping himself carefully around Allen to protect him as they crash-land on the Abandoned Battlefield. Allen pulls himself out of the drake's embrace, limping up to where its head lays on the ground so he can look his master in the eyes.
James's breaths rattle weakly in his throat, but Allen thinks he hears something like a pained laugh. He speaks into the pawn's mind again. "Don't make that face. I can only rest knowing that no one will miss me…" and Allen sees the spark of life leave his master's body. He falls to his knees.
The pawn doesn't leave the drake's corpse for weeks afterwards.
------------------------------------------
OOPS I wrote a whole ass story. this was not meant to be this long but i was Possessed by the blorbos ;-;
James starts the second cycle remembering everything and decides to change how he approaches everything (and becomes a much better person for it), but Allen doesn't (consciously) remember anything that happened in the first cycle. There's so much more I could go into but I'll leave it at that for now lol. Here's some sketches I did to emotionally damage illustrate the first cycle's end for the folks in the Pawn Lovers Guild!

So I met this griffin, I hopped on her n went for a little flight then she landed and let me off, took a little rest and then flew off without getting aggro
Tumblr media
Then later I ran into a chimera and I discovered I was severely underleveled for the area I was in during this fight woops
Tumblr media
THEN, WHO COMES TO MY RESCUE? IT'S THE SAME GRIFFIN FROM EARLIER. She starts kicking their collective ass
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now we still didn't win this fight, it lasted for the rest of the day cycle and the griffin flew off when night came and it was near death. New enemies spawned in and they eventually overwhelmed me so I cut my losses and saved my wakestones for another time.
Tumblr media
She came and picked me up again when I loaded in tho. Flew me far enough past the area the chimera was in so I didn't run into it that time,, thanks bestie :^)
