what’s this ? an AU no one asked for ? why yes, is anyone really surprised at this point ?
anyway, DPPt A:tlA AU, ft. my favorite disaster boys
-------------
our journey opens on two young men from the Fire Nation, brothers in all but blood, traveling south with the energy desperation gives
Ouba left his hometown a week from his 20th birthday. As a firebender, he is to be automatically conscripted once he comes of age, and his family just assumed he was leaving to join the army. As it was, he didn’t. With no real plan, he started heading south with his childhood friend in tow, avoiding patrols and garrisons, so he wouldn’t have to die for something he didn’t choose. Sure, the Great Fire Nation needs to spread and all, but can’t it do that without him ? His grandfather came back from the war heavily injured, and all he wants is to see his little brother (currently 6 years old) grow up. There is also another reason behind his desertion...
Denzi is Ouba’s childhood friend, and is tagging along because he has nothing better to do, and because Ouba would cry if he didn’t come with. When he was 13, he left his village for the Caldera to study advanced firebending forms, and was allowed to come back less than a year ago, at 17, although he was to join the army once he turned 18. He changed a lot in that time, lost his passion and drive, and took a rather indifferent outlook on life. He hopes for something interesting to happen to him, but doubts it will. That is, until he and Ouba crash their boat into an iceberg and notice the glowing form beneath it...
Gen was born 118 years ago. At 16, he was told of his role as the Avatar, and left his temple to learn waterbending in the Southern Water Tribe. Two years later, the Fire Nation used the power of Sozin’s comet to attack the Air Temples, and Gen attempted to fly there in a hurry and help his people out. Unfortunately, he was caught in a storm, and while he drowned, the Avatar State activated and kept him in a stasis, frozen in the ocean. He awakens to Denzi and Ouba, and after learning of the fate of his people, decides to head for the Southern Air Temple and care for the dead while he thinks up a way to make things better in the world. While he hasn’t yet quite reached mastery over waterbending, it will have to do for now, and he will need look for an earthbending teacher, as well as a firebending teacher who isn’t freaking out about the safety of himself and his friend if they’re seen in the company of the Avatar.

more DPPt A:tlA AU !! who is even surprised at this point ?
————-
travelling through Earth Kingdom on the down low is a lot easier when you don’t look like you’re obviously a Fire Nation deserter or a surviving Air Nomad, so the disaster trio had to change their looks somewhat
Gen obviously put a lot less effort into it than the two others, but since he grew his hair and hid his tattoos and the Air Nomads have been killed 100 years ago, most people don’t exactly jump at that conclusion when they see him walking around. He avoids airbending as much as he can, more often than not using his staff as a bo, or waterbending if he really has no other option (and, for the first month or so, if Ouba isn’t around)
Ouba and Denzi would look a lot less suspicious if not for their unusual hair color, but it’s not like they can easily change that, and at least they dropped the topknot. The most annoying thing with Earth Kingdom clothes is that they aren’t made for firebenders, and so tend to be flammable and/or have long sleeves. Not like Denzi has much of an issue with this specific fact, but it still makes him feel uncomfortable wearing these. Ouba on the other hand openly complains about it for like a week, and then gets used to tying his sleeves
You would think between two deserters (or rather, draft evaders, which is a lesser crime) and the actual Avatar, the latter would end up catching the attention of the Fire Nation one way or another, while the two others would be simple footnotes next to him. Yes, you would think that. Unfortunately, “dead or alive” wanted posters have been put up for Denzi, and a certain man is actively looking for him
That man is Akagi, a nonbending officer of the Fire Nation, the only nonbender born from one of the oldest noble families of the main island in decades, family that has the reputation of having the Fire Lord’s ear, Akagi being no exception. A few years back, while studying the art of firebending to satisfy his own curiosity and drive for knowledge, he came upon a young prodigy who didn’t fit in with the other, noble kids studying advanced forms at the Caldera - and, seeing himself in that kid, and seeing an opportunity to study forms he normally wouldn’t have access to so liberally, made a deal with the kid. Akagi taught Denzi everything on the theory of forms normally reserved for royalty, and Denzi taught Akagi everything about the internal mechanics of these forms, how it feels to bend, to move one’s chi around one’s body. At the time, it was a good deal. But Denzi evaded conscription, and if he were to betray his Nation even more and used these forms against Fire Nation troops, or propagated knowledge of their workings and weaknesses, things could get very bad, very quickly. And Akagi would have to bear the brunt of responsibility for that
And so, in an ironic reversal of how things should be, the Avatar ends up being the footnote of Akagi’s quest for our trio, with Denzi as the main target. At least, until Gen is discovered to be the Avatar by more people, which will surely happen one day, and until Akagi finds himself a different, more important purpose, to give his Nation and the world the greatness it deserves

Seven years before the Avatar awakened, the Fire Lord’s first child was born, taking the life of her mother by doing so. When she was three, her father passed away too, following violent headaches and an inexplicable loss of vision.
Normally, this kind of situation would call for the appointment of a regent until the heir is ready to be crowned. But alas, the court and the Fire Sages decided to play a cruel game of power. At the age of three years old, Fire Lord Miru was crowned.
For the past four years, the advisors, generals, Fire Sages, and nobles of the Caldera have fought over the opportunity to influence all and any decision the Fire Lord would make - no matter how young, she was crowned, and as such must be the one to sign decrees and orders. When having the ear or the favor of the Fire Lord used to mean indirect power, it now means total control over the course of the Fire Nation, and as such, the war.

@banhbeotim replied to your post “<p>That ATLA AU... I've never seen AA, but that art 0_o...”
His NaME Is QUinOa Im DED
Fun fact ! I played Platinum in Spanish, and when I reached my mans (spent a lot of time in Diamond doing double battles at the tower years before, I was impatient to see him again) and saw his name I just sat there like “there is no way I read that right”
For contrast, Byron’s name is Acerón, which sure, is basically just Stéel, but it at least Sounds cool
(Quinoa seriously,,,,,,,,)
Ooh okay he looks different without his usual blue outfit
Yeah, between the clothes and the (lack of) hair, Avatar Gen looks quite different from his canon counterpart. I tried mitigating it by having him grow his hair, and wear a blue bandana with frayed edges as sort of a reminder of his hat, but he definitely looks the least like himself out of all the characters I’ve redesigned yet
Most of the other characters I just changed their hair color to something more fitting of this verse haha
Is Lucario his pet? Like appa/momo?
As mentioned in the tags of this post, Lucario is Gen’s flying bison. He is to him what Appa is to Aang, a friend and companion, an animal guide, and the last living reminder of the Air Nomads and their culture
Basically you’re not wrong, but Lucario (and conversely Appa) is much, much more than just a pet
Gen tends to keep his pain internalized and to not bring up things that don’t sit well with him, but if he were to ever lose Lucario, that would definitely be his breaking point
And is Akagi traveling alone? Does he have an Uncle Iroh or he's a loner
Akagi is a 27 years old officer from one of the noblest families in the Fire Nation. Even if his grandfather felt like accompanying him on a personal, mostly self-imposed (for now) mission, Akagi would simply rebuke him
On the other hand, he has very loyal subordinates who share his desire to shape the Fire Nation into something even greater. Which is probably the very opposite of what someone like him needs, in that no one will tell him off for his more amoral and/or outlandish plans, but it’s what he has
(yes I have Plans for Akagi’s character once the story gets going)
On a more “emotional support” side of things, he mostly counts on his birds. Especially Don, a raven-eagle and the largest of Akagi’s various trained messengers. Don mostly stands near Akagi and looks scary to impressionable young recruits though. He’s only ever used as a messenger if there’s something big and/or precious to send

That ATLA AU... I've never seen AA, but that art 0_o lhfalsjd;flkjdlks When I saw the Dppt asdf;sdjfioajfdlkjls Denzi and Oba in trouble again... ah good times. And Akagi (LOOK AT HIS DESIGN ZUKO VIBES) LOVE this AU idea Imma gush over it for the next few minutes. Keep up the good work!!
haha thanks a lot !! yeah these boys can Not keep out of trouble
and I’m glad you like my Akagi design ! getting his hair to mix with the topknot was a challenge for sure, but I’m pretty happy with the result (also yeah, the Zuko vibes, I guess it’s just unavoidable when you have a character chasing the Avatar team all over the world....)
(my AUs page has now been updated with this one too, bringing the number of my AtlA AUs to “probably too many”. also if you’re ever curious about Ace Attorney, I highly recommend Press Buttons and Talk’s playthroughs of the games, they’re hilarious and the ad libs are wonderful)
---------
and while I’m at it, let me just quickly answer your other question
banhbeotim replied to your photoset “more DPPt A:tlA AU !! who is even surprised at this point ? ————- ...”
Who's the one next to Ouba, if I may ask?
that’s Gen ! (English name Riley, French name Armand, Spanish name fucking Quinoa I’ll never get over that one)
in the games, he’s one of the stat trainers, focused on Attack. you meet him on Iron Island, help him kick some Team Galaxy ass, and he gives you a Riolu egg as thanks (and also Strength before you enter the mine ? I think ?)
but yeah he’s a pretty minor character all in all, if a mysterious one
(seriously, his Pt fighting sprite implies he can use aura ? Byron wanted him to take up Oreburgh gym ?? Byron legit says “I have no idea how old [Riley] is” ??? what is that even supposed to mean gamefreak ?????????)
in this AU, he is the Avatar and the last airbender, travelling with the idiot duo partly in the hopes of finding a firebending teacher in Ouba, and partly because being alone is lonely and everyone he knew before is dead and there’s only so much one guy can handle
for more details on him and the basics of the AU, see this post here
