Convicted terrorist Benbrika freed under strict orders after plots to attack AFL grand final
By Dominic Giannini, 4:01pm Dec 19, 2023
Convicted terrorist Abdul Nacer Benbrika will be released from prison under more than 30 strict conditions after a push to keep him behind bars due to community safety risk was abandoned.
Benbrika, who appeared in court via video link, spent nearly two decades behind bars after being convicted over plots to attack the MCG during the 2005 AFL grand final, and Melbourne's Crown Casino.
He was released on Tuesday after justice Elizabeth Hollingworth ruled in the Victorian Supreme Court he will be subject to strict supervision and a curfew for one year.

Benbrika, aged in his 60s, was spotted being driven out of Barwon Prison in the back seat of a dark-coloured ute.
He will have to wear an ankle monitoring bracelet and cannot leave Victoria without approval, with police to be given extensive powers to monitor his electronic communications.
He also cannot contact certain individuals, including people in prison, convicted terrorists, those charged with such offences and people on a list prescribed by the court.
Benbrika will continue to receive psychological treatment, will need permission from the police to start a job and cannot visit numerous public places.
He will be blacked from discussing terrorist activities publicly but can do so in his deradicalisation program.
Breaching conditions of the supervision order is a criminal offence and carries a maximum penalty of five years' imprisonment.

Justice Hollingworth agreed Benbrika's "relative risk is still unacceptable at this time" due to the serious nature of his offending.
But she was satisfied "the combined effect of the conditions ... is reasonably necessary and reasonably appropriate and adapted for the purpose of protecting the community from the unacceptable risks that Benbrika presents".
Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus said he had faith in law enforcement agencies to protect the community.
The supervision order was the strongest course of action as an extended prison sentence could not be ordered by the court given the risk reduction, Dreyfus said.
"The court held that these conditions were sufficient to protect the community," he said in a statement.
But acting opposition leader Sussan Ley slammed the government for not fighting to keep Benbrika behind bars.
"Benbrika is the worst of the worst," she said.
"The government has not done everything they could have done to keep Australians safe from this convicted terrorist."
However, part of the reason the Commonwealth opted for a supervision order over continuing detention was a report buried by the home affairs department under the former coalition government.

It found the methods used to assess the future risk a person poses to the community were no better than flipping a coin.
It was "clearly a document that should have been disclosed," Hollingworth said.
She also revealed four other reports critical of the assessment tool had not been disclosed and slammed the Commonwealth for its secrecy.
While an assessment tool isn't legally required to be used, any reliied upon needed to be based on evidence and "have some underlying validity", she said.
It was concerning the department didn't disclose any of the reports to the court, Justice Hollingworth said, after previously branding the move "a disgrace".
The Commonwealth decided to apply for a supervision order after Benbrika's lawyers seized on one of the reports to challenge the veracity of the detention order he was under once it come to light.
The onus remained on the government to keep him behind bars, Ley said when asked if the former coalition government bore any responsibility for a detention order not being imposed after failing to disclose the report.
The non-disclosure of the reports will be referred to the national security legislation watchdog by the judge after her full written reasons are released.
Preventative detention was an exceptional measure but "not the norm" within a legal system, Justice Hollingworth added.
The legal system's role "is not to detain people to prevent a crime that they may or may not commit in the future".

Giancarlo Giannini in Seven Beauties (Lina Wertmüller, 1975)
Cast: Giancarlo Giannini, Fernando Rey, Shirley Stoler, Elena Fiore, Piero Di Iorio, Enzo Vitale, Roberto Herlitzka, Lucio Amelio, Ermelinda De Felice, Biaca D'Origlia, Francesca Marciano. Screenplay: Lina Wertmüller. Cinematography: Tonino Delli Colli. Production design: Enrico Job. Film editing: Franco Fraticelli. Music: Enzo Jannacci.
As a student of literature, I was called on to memorize the seven deadly sins: pride, envy, wrath, avarice, sloth, gluttony, and lechery. But I don't think I was ever made to recall the corresponding virtues, which the medieval church categorized as humility, kindness, patience, charity, diligence, temperance, and chastity. Our age has added another to the list of virtues: survival. We speak of "survival of the fittest," which has caused us to couple fitness with health as the supreme necessities for survival. One of our most popular TV shows, now in its 45th season, is Survivor, the reality competition show that has a motto: "Outwit. Outplay. Outlast." Which brings us to Pasqualino Frafuso, aka "Settebellezze" or "Seven Beauties," the protagonist of Lina Wertmüller's scarifying satire Seven Beauties. Pasqualino commits almost every one of the seven deadly sins all for the sake of survival. He outwits, outplays, and outlasts the worst that can befall him in Europe under the heel of the Nazis, lying, killing, raping, seducing as the means to an end: staying alive. And of course we loathe him for it, while at the same time questioning what we would do in the same circumstances. Giancarlo Giannini's performance as Pasqualino would be a standout in any film: He's introduced to us as a Chaplinesque caricature of a strutting dandy, and for a while it's fun to watch him go from bad to worse, as in his efforts to dispose of the body of a man he has killed. But soon a queasiness sets in, as we wonder how much lower this worm can crawl. There should be no redemption for a Pasqualino, but instead Wertmüller gives us a cynical ending, suggesting that Pasqualino will repopulate the Earth with his own kind, in his own words, "A rotten comedy, a lousy farce, called living." Seven Beauties is an unsubtle film, and its lack of finesse in character and situation works against its ostensible aim as a moral fable. It makes a feint at seriousness of purpose by introducing a sympathetic character, Pasqualino's friend Francesco (Piero Di Iorio), and a moral exemplar, the anarchist Pedro (Fernando Rey), but the dominant note of the film is a sour nihilism.

La Rinconada Country Club Timeline: 1906 to 1968
La Rinconada Country Club is a private golf course located in the foothills of LosGatos. It was constructed in 1929 and has 446 Certificated Members. The 18-hole golf course plays 6,100 yards, to a par of 70. Many of the holes have been enhanced over the years but the original playing corridors have remained the same since the opening in 1929.
September 1906: Rancho Rinconada de Los Gatos was a rancho named for the corner (Rinconada) where Los Gatos Creek bends and for the number of wildcats (Los Gatos) that lived in the area due to a plentiful water supply. The Los Gatos Times suggested a country club be built in the area and the plans for building an 18-hole course began to unfold.
Spring 1926: W.B. Maxwell buys land near Vasona Junction to build a golf course. Using his own money, he works tirelessly for two years to design and build the course.
February 1928: A group headed by W.C. Sprague buys the land from Maxwell and takes over development of the course. The course, designed by WilliamJefferson and built by his brother Phil, La Rinconada's first pro, was representative of similar facilities of the time. Other key families included in the founding of the club include those of Kevin Leach, John Moore, John Freitas, James A. Bacigalupi, Philip Leider and A.P. Giannini.
March 1928: Sprague and his group confirm that the club will open with 103 inaugural members, each paying a $500 membership fee.
June 1, 1929: Members of the newly christened La Rinconada Country Club play their first round of golf. Membership is limited to an exclusive few, most of which move in the elite business and social circles of the club's founders. Opening day hosts 700 community members with refreshments served in the temporary clubhouse. Senator Sanborn Young, an original club member, dedicates the club and course. PhillipJefferson wins the opening day match against pros Arthur Brooks and Floyd Hudson, and is named golf pro, a position he holds until his death in 1946.
April 1938: La Rinconada holds the first annual Blossom Tournament, a tournament that was held well until the late 1990’s. The tournament receives its name from the blossoming fruit trees around the valley at the time, and includes 36 holes of play over two days.
August 1940: La Rinconada holds the first Fiesta Tournament. Later renamed the Trail Days Tournament, this tournament is also a 36-hole tournament played over the course of a weekend, and attracts golfers from all over the state, making it La Rinconada’s largest event of the year.
January 1940: Los Gatos High School holds their first tournament at the country club. For many years, the high school had wanted a golf team but had no place to practice. La Rinconada offers them the space and opportunity to compete with other local high schools.
1945: World War II dictates the economic rise and fall of the era and the club comes close to ruin. For a mere $80,000, Dr. Sol Leider buys the club with the intention of reviving membership and signs a 99-year lease. He purchases the property from the Capital Company who had purchased it in 1937.
November 1952: Dr. Leider is persuaded to lease the course property back to LaRinconada residents for the lease term. During his ownership, Leider improved three course holes and organized the installation of the swimming pool and the original clubhouse renovation.
1947-1952: Due to the war and absence of men while they are in service, women’s golf dominates the club’s newspaper during this time. Tournament play also wanes during wartime. The Blossom and Fiesta tournaments, put on hold while the men were away, are resurrected.
1953: Now member-owned, La Rinconada begins to promote an exclusive, members-only image. Visitors and prospective members are allowed to use the course provided a member accompanies them. The club is reborn into a private country club and becomes more restricted. Prospective members must complete an application, which is then reviewed extensively by a member review board. Movie stars Jane Russell, Olivia de Havilland, Bing Crosby and Jack Benny are members and make infrequent appearances; there is a question of perceived club exclusivity. The club converts to yearly elections with Bill Battaglia as the club’s first president under the new ownership.
1954: At the club’s 25-year mark, Andries serves as the club’s president.
1962: The roof caves in on the Spanish-style clubhouse during a rainstorm and obvious repairs need to occur quickly. A tarp is placed over the gaping hole to allow kitchens staff to continue working, a new clubhouse is designed and work begins.
1963: The new La Rinconada Country Club clubhouse opens 500 feet north of where the old one had been situated and contains a larger dining room, kitchen, men’s grill room, and men and women’s locker rooms. The club also adds a snack shack on the 11th hole, moves the pro shop from the old clubhouse west of the parking lot, and exchanges the 1st and 6th holes to allow golfers to tee off by the new pro shop.
1968: Periodically, the club had experienced difficulties in obtaining and distributing water to irrigate the course. An agreement is made with the Santa Clara County Conservation District to solve this problem. The Conservation District obtains water right of ways through the 3rd, 8th and 9th fairways and, in exchange, La Rinconada receives all of the untreated water needed to irrigate the course.

Retrospective Review: Quantum of Solace (2008)
QoS is an odd movie in the Craig Bond era. Its one of the only Bond movies which doesn't stand on it own at all and that is by design. Frankly, Casino Royale felt like a complete story. It didn't feel like it needed a direct sequel quite like this, but that's the direction the franchise decided to go. Its also odd because QoS is also a movie that both benefits and suffers from watching it back to back with Casino Royale. Benefits are obviously thee story progression and the connections between characters. The reason it suffers is that it is obvious that its a significantly inferior movie in a lot of aspects. I don't hate QoS and it certainly is not in the vicinity of the worst Bond movies for me like it is for many, but it is undoubtedly a disappointing follow up to Casino Royale.
One major issue with the movie is the action. As I mentioned in my review for Casino Royale, the action sequences in the movie were exhilarating and visceral. QoS came in the post Greengrass Bourne era where all the action films wanted to use the quick cut, shaky cam style without quite having Greengrass's ability to use it. QoS is one of those. Some of the action sequences are genuinely difficult to follow. The opening car chase is one example. There is a shootout at the opera that is similarly chaotic as well as an elevator fight. There are a few good action sequences. There is a good boat chase scene, a pretty strong plane sequence, and the climax is pretty solid. But again, nothing quite the level of Casino Royale and it obviously invites those comparisons.
This movie is also the shortest Bond by a distance. Given it was basically written as it was being shot and by Craig and others who were not professional writers, due to the WGA strike at the time, I would say that was probably for the best. One of the good things about the film is that it does not linger. There is something constantly happening. The story is pretty simple, which is Bond attempting to hunt down the people behind the organization that killed Vesper. Its a revenge movie. So it makes sense for the story to be pretty straightforward. The film tries to be topical by bringing in the demand of oil, which was something that was a hot topic given the start of the Iraq war. The actual plot of the villains is not really of much importance. More that they are present and powerful and they need to be brought down.
Part of why this film suffers is that the villain is really not compelling. In essence the villain is Quantum as an organization, but Dominic Greene is kind of the person at the head of Quantum. He is really not a particularly villainous presence at all. At times he is unintentionally funny when trying to be menacing. Matheu Almaric is alright in the role but the character is just kind of meh. There is also a side villain for the Bond girl in question, who is also just meh. The reason you are invested in Bond taking down the villains is because Casino Royale invested you in the relationship between Bond and Vesper. So the things that succeed in this film lie primarily with what was well setup in Casino Royale. Perplexingly, Mr. White, who is set up as a big antagonist, kind of disappears after the opening of the movie apart from one brief moment.
Olga Kurylenko is not too bad as Camille. She's refreshingly not a Bond girl that is romantically entangled with Bond. She does have her own mission and her own revenge story. Its not given a whole lot of depth so its not something that the audience gets super invested in. But at least she stands out from most Bond girls. Gemma Arterton is the more stereotypical Bond girl in the movie, who shows up to literally be seduced by Bond into helping him and then dies as a result. She is quite stunning though and her death is clearly an homage to a similar Bond girl death in Goldfinger, which was another example of Bond's involvement get a girl killed.
Craig is really the primary reason why the film is still reasonably enjoyable. This is a markedly different performance compared to Casino Royale where he had a twinkle in his eye when flirting with Vesper and did have a sense of humor. This is Bond as a wounded tiger. Full of rage and resentment. And he delivers that phenomenally well. There are some genuinely heartfelt scenes as he struggles to deal with the loss. Irritation when things don't go his way. And also some guilt because he does cause a wave of death on his path of revenge. Matthis and Fields are two casualties of his mission that he bears some responsibility for. I like that the film does point out his culpability, particularly with Field's death. He kept me glued to the screen even when the screenplay isn't strong to keep me engaged. There are some solid returning performances as well. Judi Dench continues to be wonderful as M. The dynamic between her and Craig was one with felt lived in. Jeffrey Wright was a welcome return as Felix Leiter. Giancarlo Giannini is also great. Mathis was a character that was left hanging in Casino Royale. And while his fate is tragic, he does share a few of the best scenes of the movie with Bond.
In the end, Forster does a serviceable job with this film. Its a film that I can watch but its not a particularly memorable one. It also doesn't feel complete. Bond doesn't get Mr. White and we don't really get resolution of what happens with Quantum, even in subsequent films. There is a very satisfying ending scene where Bond confronts Vesper's boyfriend who is part of Quantum. That's another standout scene of the movie with Craig displaying his rage through his eyes. So while it provides some closure, it doesn't do it completely in a satisfying manner. I do think it gets more hate because it came after a classic like Casino Royale, but being a direct sequel, the comparisons were inevitable. For me, the movie is about a 6-6.5/10.

Lina Wertmüller, Italian Director of Provocative Films, Dies at 93
Lina Wertmüller, who combined sexual warfare and leftist politics in the provocative, genre-defying films “The Seduction of Mimi,” “Swept Away” and “Seven Beauties,” which established her as one of the most original directors of the 1970s, died overnight at her home in Rome, the Italian Culture Ministry and the news agency LaPresse said on Thursday. She was 93.
The culture minister, Dario Franceschini, said in a statement that Ms. Wertmüller’s “class and unmistakable style” had left its mark on Italian and world cinema, The Associated Press reported. “Grazie, Lina,” he said.
She was the first woman to receive an Academy Award nomination for best director, for “Seven Beauties” (1975).
Ms. Wertmüller, an Italian despite the German-sounding last name, burst onto the cinematic scene with a series of idiosyncratic films that propelled her to the front rank of European directors. All had screenplays written by her, and most relied on the talents of her two favorite actors: Giancarlo Giannini, usually cast as a hapless male chauvinist victimized by the injustices of Italian society and baffled by women, and Mariangela Melato as the always difficult and complicated love interest.
In the broad sense, Ms. Wertmüller was a political filmmaker, but no one could ever quite figure out what the politics were. A lively sense of human limitations tempered her natural bent toward anarchy. Struggle was noble and the social structure rotten, but the outcome was always in doubt.
Antiquated codes of honor undo the title character in “The Seduction of Mimi,” a dimwitted Sicilian laborer, played by Mr. Giannini, whose neglected wife stages a sexual revolt. In “Swept Away” (1974), Ms. Wertmüller upended the Italian power structure by giving the humble deckhand Gennarino (Mr. Giannini again) absolute power over the rich and arrogant Raffaella (Ms. Mercato) after a shipwreck.
After being dominated and abused, Gennarino turns the tables, and Raffaella becomes his adoring slave — until the two are rescued, and the old order reasserts itself. Feminists objected. With a characteristic bit of obfuscation, Ms. Wertmüller explained that since Raffaella embodies bourgeois society, “therefore she represents the man.”
In “Seven Beauties” (1975), Ms. Wertmüller again courted outrage by using a German concentration camp as the setting for a grim comedy, with farcical overtones. This time, Mr. Giannini played Pasqualino Farfuso, a craven Neapolitan deserter and two-bit charmer who, determined to survive at all costs, seduces the camp’s sadistic female commandant and, directed by her, murders other prisoners. Critics were divided over the merits of the film, but it earned Ms. Wertmüller the Oscar nomination. Not until 1994, when Jane Campion was nominated for “The Piano,” would another woman be nominated.
Ms. Wertmüller’s reputation, always more elevated in the United States than in Europe, remained uncertain. With “Seven Beauties,” the critic John Simon wrote, Ms. Wertmüller ascended “into the highest regions of cinematic art, into the company of the major directors.” The critic David Thomson, on the other hand, ascribed her American popularity in the 1970s as “probably inevitable in a country ravenous for a female purveyor of smart cultural artifacts.”
And her brand of sexual politics encountered hostility from critics like Pauline Kael, Molly Haskell and Ellen Willis, who called her “a woman-hater who pretends to be a feminist.”
Tiny and voluble, with a fierce smile and instantly recognizable white-framed eyeglasses, Ms. Wertmüller disarmed criticism by unleashing verbal torrents of explanation in a gravelly alto. Vincent Canby, after listening to her hold forth during a publicity tour for her first English-language film, “The End of the World in Our Usual Bed on a Night Full of Rain” (1978), wrote in The New York Times that she spoke “with enthusiasm and at such length and so articulately that (to vary an old Hollywood joke) it seems Warner Brothers might do better to scrap the film and distribute the director.”
Arcangela Felice Assunta Wertmüller von Elgg Spañol von Braueich was born in Rome on Aug. 14, 1928, to a family of noble Swiss ancestry. Her mother was the former Maria Santamaria-Maurizio; her father, Federico, was a successful lawyer and a domestic tyrant with whom she quarreled constantly. After obtaining a teaching certificate she hedged her bets by enrolling simultaneously in law school and a Stanislavskian drama academy in Rome. Theater won out.
During the 1950s, Ms. Wertmüller toured with a puppet theater, wrote musical comedies for television and worked as an actress and stage manager. Her best friend, married to Marcello Mastroianni, introduced her to Federico Fellini, who hired her as an assistant director on “8½,” a life-changing experience that opened the world of film to her.
In 1963 she directed her own film, “The Lizards,” a study of provincial life in the vein of Fellini’s “I Vitelloni.” It was followed by the quirky “Let’s Talk About Men” (1965), a study of sexual politics that foreshadowed her later explorations of the subject.
Ms. Wertmüller’s long collaboration with Mr. Giannini began in television, when she directed him in the musical “Rita the Mosquito” (1966) and its sequel “Don’t Sting the Mosquito” (1967), whose art director, Enrico Job, she married in 1968.
Mr. Job died in 2008. Information on survivors was not immediately available.
The 1970s presented Ms. Wertmüller with two of her richest subjects: the changing sexual politics brought about by feminism, and increasing political turbulence in Italy, as old social structures and attitudes buckled under the pressures of modernity. “The Seduction of Mimi,” chosen as an official entry at the Cannes festival in 1972, immediately established her as an important new filmmaker. “Love and Anarchy” (1973), with Mr. Giannini playing a bumbling country boy who tries to assassinate Mussolini, and the social satire “All Screwed Up” (1974), solidified her reputation for idiosyncratic political films blending tragedy and farce.
Somewhat paradoxically her career went into steep decline after the Academy nomination, although in 2019 she received an honorary Oscar for her work, and in 2016 she was the subject of a documentary, “Behind the White Glasses.”
“The bubble seemed to burst,” the British critic Derek Malcolm told The Guardian, adding that “she could do nothing right.”
The titles of the films grew even longer, and the critical response more uniformly hostile. “The End of the World,” with Candice Bergen as an American photographer and feminist engaged in marital struggle with an Italian communist played by Mr. Giannini, was roundly dismissed as raucous and incoherent. Each succeeding film seemed to bear out Michael Wood’s observation, in The New York Review of Books, that Ms. Wertmüller’s work displayed “a stunning visual intelligence accompanied by a great confusion of mind.”
By the early 1990s she had qualified for inclusion in Variety’s “Missing Persons” column. “Ciao, Professore” (1994), about a schoolteacher from northern Italy mistakenly transferred to a poor school near Naples, suggested a return to form, but on a small scale, and with an unexpected sweetness. For perhaps the first time in her career, Ms. Wertmüller faced the charge of sentimentality.
To this, as to all criticism, she responded by invoking the ultimate authority: herself. Her films, she liked to say, were made to please an audience of one, and her methods were intuitive.
“I am sure of things only because I love them,” she said. “I am born first. Only then do I discover.”

Australia unites against Musk to take down terror posts
By Dominic Giannini and Tess Ikonomou, 22 April 2024 4:00pm
Tumblr media
Elon Musk says X will fight the eSafety commissioner's order to take down offensive content. (AP Photo)
Political unity against social media giant X for fighting to keep potentially harmful content online has reinvigorated a push to crack down on graphic material.
Leading politicians have taken aim at comments from X chief executive Elon Musk, with one labelling him an "egotistical billionaire".
The federal government and opposition have backed efforts for graphic content - including of a stabbing massacre at a Sydney shopping centre - to be taken down from X, formerly Twitter.
It has led to a renewed focus on a government bill that would have tackled misinformation online that was temporarily shelved after the opposition argued it went too far and impacted free speech.
Opposition communications spokesman David Coleman said the coalition was willing to work with the government to curtail violent content online.
He also wants the government to adopt an age verification trial "so fewer kids see this awful material".
X has raised concerns about censorship, the jurisdiction of Australian laws and edicts dictating what overseas users can see.
Powers allowing the eSafety commissioner to issue a global takedown order to companies that had servers hosted overseas were put in place to deal with a scenario such as this, Mr Coleman said.
X said it would challenge an order from the eSafety commissioner.
It said the commissioner did not have the authority to enforce what users could see globally, branding the move an "unlawful and dangerous approach".
Global takedown orders also violated the principle of an open internet and threatened free speech, it said.
The response has irked all sides of politics in Australia.
"It beggars belief, doesn't it, that this egotistical billionaire thinks it's more important for him to show whatever he wants on X or Twitter ... than to respect the victims of the crimes," Labor frontbencher Tanya Plibersek told Seven's Sunrise program.
Greens senator Sarah Hanson-Young called for Mr Musk to front an Australian parliamentary inquiry and answer questions about algorithms that help content go viral and garner attention.
"These laws need to get to the heart of the problem and that is the profits they make off the algorithms they use and the data that they use," she said.
"It's no wonder that Elon Musk, the narcissistic cowboy, thinks he can just give the middle finger to the Australian government because for too long, we've had little to no regulation."
Liberal frontbencher Simon Birmingham said the use of social media advanced algorithms and technology to quickly target users meant platforms should be able to "quickly and effectively remove content that is damaging and devastating to the social harmony and fabric of society".
"Particularly images such as terrorist attacks," Senator Birmingham told ABC TV.
"We should expect that, we should demand it and we will certainly back the government to put in place the types of powers or penalties that make social media companies pay attention."
He also rejected claims about censorship.
It was an "insulting and offensive argument" to say the removal of imagery of a terrorist attack was censorship and it should be left unfiltered for children and others to see, Senator Birmingham said.
There was also the potential images could be used to inspire future terrorists, create disharmony and be manipulated for propaganda, he added.

Your Monday Morning Roundup
The Sixers are playoff bound:
Playing against a potential playoff team in Minnesota, the Sixers came out of the gate running and dominated the Timberwolves, save for a late rally with the bench almost blowing it, for a 120-108 win. Even though the team’s magic number was one, a tiebreaker did not allow the Sixers to clinch on Saturday night. Indiana’s win over Miami last night officially clinched it but who the hell cares. Let’s just say our win did it.
Ben Simmons, who should be the Rookie of the Year, had his 10th triple-double of the season with 15 points, 13 assists, and 12 rebounds. CAN DONOVAN MITCHELL DO THIS?!

OR THIS?!
Ben Simmons is currently averaging 16 points, 7.9 rebounds, 8 assists per game on 53.8 percent shooting.
Players to do that in a single season in NBA history:
LeBron James (2x, including this year) Wilt Chamberlain Michael Jordan Magic Johnson
end list.

Didn’t think so.
Joel Embiid had 19, Dario Saric added 18, Marco Belinelli scored 17 off the bench, and Robert Covington netted 11.
With the playoffs already clinched, their next goal is getting the highest seed as possible. The standings with 10 games left in the season:
Everybody but Washington and Miami won yesterday. The Sixers are within striking distance of the Cavaliers, but need to continue to fend off the Pacers. Luckily, they have two games in hand on Indiana and an easier schedule.
We also got a Markelle Fultz update from head coach Brett Brown:
“When Markelle Fultz feels like he can go, he really feels good about himself and his health, the shoulder, everything, and the medical people support that…He knows he’s got a coaching staff and a team that will welcome him in when he says go.”
The Sixers host Denver tonight at 7 PM on NBC Sports Philadelphia. Indiana’s next game is Tuesday night out west against the Steph Curry-less Golden State Warriors.
Get hyped for the playoffs!

The Roundup:
For the second time in three years, Villanova is headed to the Final Four. They took down West Virginia Friday night in a Crossing Broad Editor Wars battle, followed by a win over Texas Tech yesterday in the Elite 8.
They’ll play Kansas, who defeated Duke in overtime, in the late semifinal game at 8:49ish Saturday on TBS. Would have been nice to end Grayson Allen’s career, but hey at least he’s done now!
Elsewhere in Philly college hoops, La Salle and coach Dr. John Giannini have parted ways after 14 seasons. Are Temple and Fran Dunphy next?
This is a great way to start your run as an Eagle: Michael Bennett has been issued a warrant for his arrest over an incident at Super Bowl LI in Houston last year. According to one of his attorneys, Rusty Hardin, he plans to surrender to police when he returns to the continental United States.
Houston police held a press conference, and Kevin jotted down a summary of what police said. Notably, there’s no video that exists (as of now) and another officer saw it. Except his sister has some video:
This video doesn’t show the alleged felony committed by Michael Bennett but it does show his sister, Ashley Bennett, *did* record herself and her brother running onto the field after the 2017 Super Bowl. https://t.co/UKyUTNiAZa pic.twitter.com/ZOPfYDzD03

The alleged incident is not included. It’s unknown whether she has it and just edited it or just wasn’t recording when it happened, if it even did. Still a weird situation.
Anyway, Doug Pederson said the team never got a good offer for Nick Foles. But on the Wentz front:
“He’s doing really well. He’s ahead of schedule.”
Could Mike Wallace be an upgrade over Torrey Smith?
Malcolm Jenkins had surgery on his left thumb, but he should be fine:

After edging the Rangers on Thursday, the Flyers fell in overtime to the Penguins 5-4 in Pittsburgh. Travis Sanheim and Brandon Manning, two bottom pair defensemen, got things going for the Flyers. You’d think when that happens it’s going to be a good game right? No, because it’s also the Flyers.
Down one in the second, the Penguins got two goals 2:37 into the period to take a 3-2 lead and chase starter Alex Lyon. Jordan Weal tied it later, before Sidney Crosby scored 17 seconds into the third. Sean Couturier tied things late in regulation to assure the Flyers got a point, but Bryan Rust scored the game-winner to give Pittsburgh the additional point.
The Flyers continue their three game road trip out west to take on Dallas tomorrow night. The point ties them with Columbus for the third Metropolitan spot, but the Blue Jackets own a tiebreaker as of now. New Jersey is three points back, and Florida is three points behind the Devils.
Scott Kingery made the Phillies’ Opening Day roster. He also got a six-year, $24 million deal with the Phils and club options for 2024, 2025, and 2026. Let’s get that Wild Card!
Elsewhere on the roster, Drew Hutchison has made it to the 40-man roster, and Jake Arrieta will make his Phillies debut April 8 against the Miami Marlins.
The Phillies wrap up Spring Training with two games against Pittsburgh. The first one is today on the road, before the Phils host the Pirates Tuesday afternoon in Clearwater.
In other sports news, Loyola-Chicago and Michigan won their Elite 8 matchups from Saturday. More Sister Jean!
After the Michigan-Florida State game, Seminole head coach Leonard Hamilton wasn’t happy with Dana Jacobson’s question about not fouling late down four points. He issued an apology the next day.
Odell Beckham won’t play for any team until he has a new contract.
The Jets have rescinded their offer to defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh. The Rams are the frontrunners to land him.
Marshall Harris is reportedly out at NBC Sports Philadelphia.
Ohio State forward Keita Bates-Diop is entering the NBA Draft.

Gosha Altshuler, Designer of the brand Gosha Altshuler
What & Who is Gosha Altshuler?
Primarily it is me - Gosha Altshuler. I am the one who inspired and created the brand, and now I am that person who daily gives every part of my soul to my creation, contributing all my knowledge, skills and experience to it.
Is your perspective on fashion ever affected by your age?
Of course, it’s no wonder that your approach to work and attitude to different aspects change with years of professional experience.  I continue mastering my profession every day. Being a good professional in this field means having knowledge in different aspects of this business as well. So I have to deal with finance, marketing, technology and other fields, learning all the time.
In brief description, how do you approach the business side of fashion?
It is not easy to depict it in brief, but what is really essential today is that first I must plan my work from business aspects –like finance and marketing, and only then I start designing process. These are the demands of modern industry.
How would you describe yourself as a person & artist?
I can hardly call myself an artist; I don’t have any education in this field. And I am not so good at painting. I am rather a designer, a constructor and a manager, than an artist in a full sense. And sometimes I do regret not being a skillful artist.
How did you know you wanted to be a designer, was that your first choice as a profession?
I became the one who I am today little by little, step by step. First I acquired a profession of a tailor. Then I studied clothing design. I got essential and indispensable experience while working in high-class atelier which specialized in fur and skin garments. There I completely fell in love with these materials.  Later, my friends and I launched a little manufactory where I started accomplishing some designer’s work.  Only after having opened my own studio I definitely settled in the position of a designer. Though even now I cut out items and even sew from time to time.
Do you have a favorite designer who inspires you? Who is that?
Of course I do. I used to admire the work of Gianfranco Ferre, today among my favorites are Tom Ford, Frida Giannini, Roland Mouret and some others. Their style is close to what I love, and their business model seams very effective to me.
Do you see an impact on fashion due to the economy change and do you feel that you have something to say with your designs?
Economic situation defines its laws in all aspects of life, not only in fashion.  What I want is my design to correspond to spirit of the time, and even be ahead in some sense, but still be in demand with clients.
Tell me about your latest collection. What was your vision when you created it?
To start with I always dreamt about Cuba, wanted to visit it one day. Besides, the theme of Cuba is one of the trends of new season.  Before creating my collection I read and watched a lot of materials, listened to beautiful Cuban music and musicians – Ibrahim Ferrera, Compay Segundo, Rubén González and others. And the documentary devoted to them titled «Buena Vista Social Club» became that impulse which helped to create the collection.
To be a designer, you had to undergo a lot of struggles. What was the most difficult obstacle for you when putting together your collection?
Thera are always all kinds of professional questions – will you appeal to your client, what will become a bestseller, and what will be more like a background.
What is always connected with problems in Ukraine is getting materials and accessories of good quality.
I am very grateful to my team. They are real professionals. Good team is already a half of your success!
Then goes good marketing strategy – how to introduce your product, where to advertise etc.
But all these tasks become easier with years of experience.  And when you have people who support you and are real specialists – it is a new level of business.
Did you ever think you would become so successful in this fashion era? Why?
To be honest, I never really expected it. I don’t want my ego to be the center of my creative work. I rather care about my reputation as a professional and a man.
Now, has preparing for the show been hectic for you? In What way?
We definitely have got a certain level during years of work, we have certain reputation. For me and my team it is important.  We must demonstrate high level every time. Our clients shouldn’t be disappointed. So this is the challenge for us during and after shows.
Who excites you the most (Celebrity) & why?
You know, I am happy that my clothing is in demand, that people wear it, live in it and with it. I absolutely don’t care if these people are famous or not, though I have some famous clients. We are all simply people of our planet.
How is your brand different from any other designer brands?
I’d say we have special emotional atmosphere. We make our clothing with soul, with feelings towards those who will wear our clothing. Plus we respect tailoring traditions, combining them with innovations, technology and modern materials.
What are your world-dominating goals for Gosha Altshuler?
Currently we want to come back to our roots and favorite materials - skin, suede and fur.  Now most part of our collections will be manufactured from these materials. Little by little we want to enter on one level with such brands of this segment as JITROIS, APHERO, SERAPHIN.
 About the brand:
Gosha Altshuler is a Ukrainian brand of women’s clothing. The brand appeals to women who prefer exquisite and refined style.  The brand’s designer Gosha Altshuler is one who remains faithful to the best traditions of art of tailoring.
He revives classical cuts giving them a new modern interpretation. The designer has a special skill to create edgy and statement pieces which at the same time are still quiet practical and appropriate to wear in life.
Twelve years of brand’s history proved its signature quality and style.  The brand continues its consistent growth efficiently responding to all actual demands of fashion industry.
