Both Aoba and Nine are products of Toue's research whilst Haruka (bless her heart) was abused so badly by her parents that she couldn't produce children. What I'm trying to say is: when Aoba asked about the birds and the bees, did Haruka and Nine just stare at him, look at each other, and then up to Granny who just sighed and had to be the one to give him The Talk instead?

Thinking abt that one post where someone pointed out Aoba's love language is kissing where his bfs got hurt (Noiz's fucked up fingers, Koujaku’s scars, etc) what if he learned this behavior from Tae when he was younger and just a little thing think abt it, kid Aoba running around outside playing or smth like that when he trips and falls and fucks up the palm of his hand from scraping it so he's crying, Tae cleaning his wound and patching him up while he's still crying then places a kiss over his teeny bandaged palm and he stops crying
(She stopped doing this as he got older of course but GODDD. DMMD fandom make more headcanons where Tae is being loving to her grandson I'm begging you)

DRAMAtical Murder > Sprites [JAST USA Release, 2021]
I'm quite sure other folks have pulled the sprites from this game before, but I figured I'd still do it anyway just for the sake of completion. Lots of different sizes & crops for these bad boys, so feel free to take your pick. (Clear even comes with a whole host of emotion assets that you can add to anyone else!) These are great for fan games, sprite edits, or making a big cardboard cutout to bring on dates.
Package details & links are under the cut, or you can click here for a static page.
Sprites — [ L I N K ] > Includes sprites for Aoba, major characters [Clear, Koujaku, Mink, Noiz, Ren, Trip, & Virus], other notable characters [Akushima, Alpha, Alpha-2, Haga, Kio, Mio, Mizuki, Nao, Ryuuhou, Sei, Tae, Toue, & Yoshie], Allmates [Beni, Clara, Junker, Tori, Usagimodoki, & Usui], & NPCs > Sprites are organized by character & categorized further by cropping, variant, &/or affiliation > These files contain spoilers for all routes — proceed with caution if you have not yet 100% completed the game
Looking for even more DMMd assets? > [ L I N K ]

What is DRAMAtical Murder?
I’m actually a little surprised to be writing this myself, in the year of our lord 2023, but why not? I didn’t know about it myself until recently, and now that it’s available with an official English translation, it’s a lot more accessible.
First of all, DRAMAtical Murder (or DMMd for short) is a visual novel that came out in 2012 in Japan. It was published by Nitro+CHIRAL, features art by Honyarara, and has some amazing music as well (the theme song is by Goatbed, with ending songs by them, Itou Kanako, VERTUEUX, and Seizi Kimura). It is a boys’ love or BL visual novel, probably the softest of the Nitro+CHIRAL titles; since its publication, it has received several additional pieces of media: a fandisk (Re:Connect), a sanitized version for the PSVita (Re:Code), and even an anime which... is certainly one way to get into it.
In 2021, Jast Blue made an official translation which was released both on Steam (censored) and their own website (uncensored). A patch is available on their website to restore the uncensored content for those who purchased it on Steam, which still allows the player to receive all the achievements. There was also a fan translation lovingly created many years ago, and the controversy over which version is better rages on. I won’t comment about it here; just know that whichever version you prefer, that is your right.
But what is DMMd about? Well... this is gonna get long, so let’s buckle in.
DMMd is set in a near-future cyberpunk setting, generally positive and colorful rather than dystopian. The story takes place on an island off the coast of Japan, Midorijima (literally “green island”), where many of the residents have been forced off the island due to the building of a gigantic sort of adult playground, Platinum Jail, where the rich and elite party like there’s no tomorrow. The remaining residents of the island live in what’s left of the city, though the owner of Platinum Jail, Tatsuo Toue, seems to be trying to grasp the remaining land as well for his own purposes.
Some of the residents have taken to forming gangs called Ribstiez, which control different parts of the Residential District. Others play a virtual game called Rhyme that takes place entirely within the players’ minds. This is facilitated through the use of Allmates, small robotic creatures that can look like anything the user desires and have multiple functions -- some manage social media, some help their owners with their daily schedules, etc.
Our protagonist is the young man known as Aoba Seragaki.
Tumblr media
Aoba, 23 years old and single at the start of the game, works at Heibon Junk Shop. He is demonstrated to have an unusually persuasive voice when he chooses to, but -- aside from that, and his hair having sensation in it -- he seems to be an ordinary young man just trying to live a simple life. He lives with his grandmother, Tae, as his parents left Midorijima when he was young, and he has an Allmate: a small, fluffy, blue dog resembling a Japanese Spitz, named Ren.
Tumblr media
Aoba has four potential love interests (plus a secret one whose route is unlocked as you play through the others’ routes).
First up is Koujaku.
Tumblr media
Koujaku is an old childhood friend of Aoba’s. He had to leave the island when they were young, but came back around three years prior to the start of the story. He leads the Ribstiez gang known as Beni-Shigure and has a red sparrow Allmate named Beni. To supplement his income, he works as a wandering hairdresser and sets up on the street to cut hair. He and Aoba have a comfortable friendship that gets tested in his route.
Next, we have Clear.
Tumblr media
Clear is a mysterious stranger who literally falls out of the sky the first time he and Aoba meet. He refers to Aoba as “Master” and refuses to take his gas mask off under any circumstances. To say any more about him would spoil literally his entire route.
Next up is Noiz:
Tumblr media
Noiz appears first when he challenges Aoba to a match in Rhyme, insisting that Aoba is an old player of the game despite the fact that Aoba doesn’t remember ever having played Rhyme in the past. Noiz is part of a Rhyme gang known as the Ruff Rabbitz, and his Allmate is a small black-and-green cube called Usagimodoki. It’s entirely possible he has several of them, since they can be seen hanging in chains from his belt. Noiz works as an information broker to earn an income on Midorijima, but he’s not originally from there, as we learn on his route.
Finally, we have Mink.
Tumblr media
Mink is a complicated character, as he doesn’t speak too much and when he does, it tends to be in riddles. He’s also not originally from Midorijima; while it’s not specified, his aesthetic is very much Native American. He has a pink cockatoo Allmate who is not named during the main game. Mink runs a Rib gang called Scratch made up of escaped convicts. His reasons for wanting Aoba on his side are his own, only revealed far into his route. His is the darkest of the routes, and I would say a trigger warning is in order for this one.
As for the final love interest, I won’t talk about it here. More fun to find out for yourself, right? Just remember: there’s some weird shit in this game.
Lest I forget, I must mention some other important characters. First up, Aoba’s friend Mizuki.
Tumblr media
Mizuki runs the largest Ribstiez gang on Midorijima, Dry Juice. He’s a tattoo artist and owns a combination tattoo parlor and bar, the Black Needle.
There’s also Virus and Trip.
Tumblr media
Virus and Trip (who are emphatically not twins) are a pair of yakuza who seem to show up a lot around Aoba. They claim to be his biggest fans.
Of course, there’s also Tae, as well as Aoba’s boss Haga (who has a robotic Allmate named Junker), Yoshie (who runs a courier service and owns a sleek dog Allmate, Clara), and a trio of young siblings who torment Aoba at his work - Mio, Nao, and Kio. In addition, one of the most corrupt cops on the island, Akushima, regularly pops up to bother the characters.
As the common route progresses, Aoba learns more about himself and his past -- and realizes he has to stop what’s happening before it’s too late. He eventually heads into Platinum Jail no matter which love interest’s route is chosen; the events that unfold change depending on which route you’re on, but playing through all of them and unlocking the secret route will finally reveal the truth of it all.
Re:Connect, as befits a fandisk, explores more with each of the love interest routes after their good endings (and also a bit more of the bad endings). It also has a route specifically to fill in Aoba’s backstory and youth. Re:Code is basically the same game, but sanitized -- all of the sex scenes were removed and given “cleaner” CGs. It did add a route for Mizuki, which involved more of Aoba’s backstory. Finally, the anime was passable, though it compressed all the love interests’ stories into an episode each and went with the secret route for the ending. It is absolutely unwatchable in dub, except for laughs and memes. Re:Connect can be found and played with the fan translation online, and is absolutely worth locating. Re:Code, unfortunately, is still only available to play on the PSVita and has not been translated at all.
Oh, and there was also a stage play! Remarkably, they produced a butai in 2019, well after the games had come out, with the different love interest routes portrayed on alternate days. I would be happy to make a post babbling about that if there’s interest. Apparently the original run did well enough that a new production was announced earlier this year, which will be happening at the end of April. A new route was added for Virus and Trip, and the whole thing is supposed to be a “supercharged” version, not just a retread of the original.
OH I FORGOT there are also drama CDs that continued all of the love interests’ stories and had even more new music, as well as some other fun things like a special drama CD for the anime release, an April Fool’s game that basically parodied Mother (Earthbound), and manga. And there’s a webtoon now. And lots of merch. And figures. Basically there’s just a lot of fun stuff to find.
And that’s DMMd! I obviously love it quite a bit, but I certainly acknowledge that it has its flaws and difficult scenes. I’d still recommend it, though. I think the writing is very well handled and the sex scenes are hot as fuck.

One thing I haven't seen anyone mention yet is how Tae and Tajima share the same voice actress, Fuzuki Kun! Dmmd has a very special place in my heart so I was really touched when I first heard Tajima's voice. Whenever her shop was included in the exploration segments it always felt like I was welcomed back home in a way (can you tell that I still miss dmmd everyday lol). I think Towa feels the same way since it is the only place from his past that's left standing. I just really love and appreciate this casting decision so much

Usui's design makes me wanna make a HM/Story of Seasons dmmd AU... Fuck it:
Aoba - Player character therefore out unsuspecting farmer, gets left his parent's farm on the edge of town. Doesn't find out till he turns 23. Previously worked at Haga-san's general store. Can see forest sprites, which other people cannot.
Tae - Town Doctor who runs a small clinic that sells animal medicine as well. Aoba used to live with her at the clinic before moving out to live on the farm. Still comes by all the time to eat.
Haga - Runs the general store in town. Sells farming supplies and basic goods. The terrible trio still run amuck in this shop too.
Yoshie - Mayor and #1 nosey neighbor. Gives town improvement quests. Often sends Aoba treats and recipes in the mail. Akushima - Town's police. Constant harassing you about regulations and minor rule violations. Always patrolling around town.
Sei - Mysterious stranger that starts showing up in town after Aoba takes over the farm, seen in town only on sundays. Sometimes can be found in the forest clearing. Turns out he is actually a human form of the Harvest Goddess. Goddess form is Usui. Gives player farming quests to restore the town to balance with nature. Mizuki - Owns the town's only inn. The Black Needle, which is also a tavern that the townsfolk often gather at in the evening. Still does tattoo work in a private studio in the back. Sometime people come from out of town to seek out his skills.
Koujaku- A hairdresser who moved back to town a few years ago, used to play with Aoba as kids. Opens up a shop that- in addition to serving as a salon- sells new outfits. Very well liked in town and known for lending a helping hand to anyone who needs it.
Noiz - Moved to town somewhat recently and has a permanent room rented out at The Black Needle. He is barely seen out around the town, only at the occasional meal time in the tavern. No one knows him very well or why he moved here. Sticks out in the otherwise tight knit town. Said to be a programmer of some kind, working freelance.
Mink- Runs his own farm just outside of town. Lived here a long time but is fairly reclusive, but well respected. Comes to town to do carpentry work for the townsfolk. He offers to sells seeds from his farm to Aoba once he starts his farm. He can be commissioned to improve farm buildings as well.
Clear - Somewhat mysterious man who lives down near the ocean. Moved here after his grandfather passed away. Wanted to be near the ocean. Collects sea shells and baubles for a living. Gives the Aoba a fishing rod he bought but never figured out how to use (wanted to catch jellyfish). Can still be a secret robot, harvest moon get's wild sometimes. Ren - Basically the secret bachelor option in this game, like the witch/wizard character usually is. Forest sprite that is close to Aoba. Was in the form of a small fluffy talking dog that Aoba has known since he was a kid. Hangs out on the farm with Aoba. As part of doing a side harvest goddess quest line, Sei grants Ren a human body.
Allmates - Torn between keeping them as-is (minus ren) or making them all Forest sprites that start socializing with townsfolk as your progress the Harvest goddess quests and more people are able to see them again.
Virus and Trip - Weirdos who come to town on occasion and cause problems for Aoba. Interested in the the legend of the Harvest goddess and the power associated. Show up to hinder or help with the main questline depending on their mood.
Thank you for reading this far if you did lmao

I'm thinking about how Aoba has such deep-seated abandonment issues to the point where he hates being alone. Like, it's a genuine fear of his, being abandoned or left completely alone. And Sly is so intense about protecting Aoba because of this.
In Noiz’s route, when Noiz left, Aoba searched for him relentlessly and gave up only because he'd gaslit himself into believing he'd see him again someday whilst still being so depressed. When he came back, of course Aoba was happy but he was also conflicted because Noiz had drastically changed so much which made Aoba afraid that he'd seen so much of the world by now that he'd eventually leave him behind.
In Clear’s route, after Clear died, Aoba kept him in his room hidden away for months on end, determined to fix him himself although his knowledge was only limited to allmates and he didn't know the first thing about repairing a broken android. But even after he gave up on trying to fix him, he still kept him hidden away from everyone else in his room because he didn't want to be without him. He was so hesitant when giving the responsibility to fix him over to Tae, and even then he was so anxious and depressed throughout the waiting process. The first thing he asked Clear when he came back was “Are you real?” because he was so convinced his mind set up a maladaptive daydream as a coping mechanism to cope with his grief and depression, which is honestly not so far fetched. He was so afraid to have sex with Clear because the last time they did so, he was breaking down and it was his dying wish; Aoba was so afraid of hurting Clear or of damaging him because he was terrified of losing him again when he just got him back.
In Mink’s re:connect route, Aoba left the comfort of his home as a means to search for him, traveled halfway across the globe to look for him because of how lonely he was without him. He'd told Mink he was depressed and upset when he left without a word and he wanted to see him because he wanted to get a conversation out of him for once, for him to talk to him, to communicate with something other than violence because, with the help of Scrap, Aoba knew that wasn't who Mink really was; he was hiding his true nature from Aoba, hiding it underneath a coat of wanting revenge and nothing more. When Mink ignored his attempts at communication, (not because he didn't care for him, but because he did care and the shame and guilt of abusing him and solely using him as a tool for his benefit made him want to hide and run from Aoba) Aoba nearly drew himself crazy because although they were sleeping under the same roof, he still felt so alone with every moment Mink ignored his advances towards healthy development in their relationship.
In Koujaku’s route, Aoba is upset with him for withholding information from him when they're supposed to tell each other everything, seeing as how they're childhood friends. So, he already feels a lack of trust and communication between them. But, when Koujaku started repeatedly leaving the hotel they were staying at in Platinum Jail, Aoba started to get excessively angry. In a flashback to his childhood, it's revealed that whenever Aoba was left alone, he'd run off because he was so anxious, and he'd start to cry. And Koujaku would find him and console him every time. I think it's because of this that Aoba was so upset at Koujaku when he started leaving the hotel without him knowing. Because, Koujaku out of all people, should know just how bad his fear of abandonment and loneliness is. Which is why Aoba feels somewhat betrayed by Koujaku’s actions.
This is all rooted in the fact that Nine, Haruka, and Tae were the first people who gave Aoba shelter and safety in terms of his abandonment issues and the anxiety that came with the fear of being alone. The comfort his newfound family gave him caused his alters to no longer negatively front and to quiet down amongst his headspace as there was no reason to protect him and no trauma for them to hold for him. Yet, when Nine and Haruka had to leave, this caused very intense trauma of abandonment to form, which in turn caused Sly to front as a means to protect him as well as hold onto his trauma. “Don't trust anyone. They're all enemies. They could hurt us.” Sly just wanted to keep Aoba safe from being abandoned and traumatized again. I could talk about Aoba’s anxiety and fear of abandonment and how that ties into the lengths Sly would go to protect him from experiencing anymore trauma in relation to that, but for now, take my ramblings about this anxiety-ridden system.

for a moment i was contemplating a naruto dmmd au, but then i immediately realized it would be ren/naruto and sly/sasuke and dropped it. this happened within 10 seconds and it happened because i saw you on my dash so i blame you
BAHAHAHAHHAHAHA
ok ok ok but how would this work? Would Jiraya, Kakashi, or Iruka be the Tae-figure who gets abducted & forces Naruto into becoming invested in the conflict. It'd have to be Iruka, right?
WAIT, new thought: Naruto is Aoba, Sly is Kurama. And the princess in Oval Tower (who is much more important in this AU than Sei was in canon) is Sasuke. Which makes Orichimaru Toue, ig.
And rather than sitting quietly by before blowing shit up at the very last second, Sasuke would do less calls for rescue and more mischief, maybe. So you'd have trouble brewing within and outside the tower, two forces racing to meet in the middle.
(Sasuke having Sei's eye powers also makes So much sense....ohhhh my godddddddd)
