What if we found a secure way to suspend packages of natural flame retardants like baking soda (or something better if you know of it) from trees throughout forests in, say, California, so that if the region caught fire, the casing would be destroyed, releasing the material and slowing the fire? Would this work?

Also, programs that plant trees are great and all, but what about programs to plant native flame-resistant plants along forest floors?

花粉症と防災

この前の三連休辺りから花粉症の症状が出るように。病院のお薬を飲んでマスクして目薬をさす日々です。

そうなってくると、休日にお天気が良くても家にいる時間が増え、元々嫌いじゃない掃除や整頓が念入りになり、ついでに防災点検もやることに。

先日静岡旅行で寄ったホームセンターで買った耐震ラッチも洗面所の扉に付けました。

食器のように割れるものはなくても、洗剤が落ちて飛び散ったりしても嫌だなと思っていたので、少し気が楽になりました。

後、最近購入したのは、最初の写真にも載せたカセットコンロとボンベ、ランタン。（←想像以上に明るかった！）その他、懐中電灯や予備電池いろいろ。液体ハミガキも買いました。

カセットコンロは普段使わないし場所とるし…と、つい後回しにしていたのですが、CDを60枚以上売りに行き、場所を確保しました💦

ちなみに非常用トイレセット、モバイルバッテリー（充電式と乾電池式それぞれ）、手回しラジオ、水を運ぶ袋などは前から用意しています。もちろんお水なども。

非常時には電子マネーやカードが使えなくなる可能性も…という話を聞き、『確かに！』と小銭も貯めることに。

普段から予備のお札は用意していましたが、現金をほぼ使わない生活なので、小銭がたまに出来るとお財布が重くて嫌だったので、その意味でもよかったです。

Old downtown fire in Japan

On January 3, 2024, a fire broke out in Uomachi, Kokurakita-ku, Kitakyushu City, at around 3:10 p.m. The fire broke out in a restaurant district called Torimachi Shokudogai. The site is located south of JR Kokura Station, adjacent to Tangae Market, known as the kitchen of Kitakyushu. The fire spread to the surrounding area and the fire department fought to extinguish the blaze. Fortunately, no casualties were reported.

The cause of the fire is believed to be mismanagement of a gas stove used in the kitchen of the restaurant where the fire broke out. There is testimony that a waiter closed the restaurant after forgetting to turn off the gas stove, and the police are investigating on suspicion of manslaughter. It is also pointed out that the buildings around the site are wooden and densely built, and that the fire spread quickly.

The fire was another major blow to Tangae Market, which suffered two major fires in 2022. Tangae Market is an area that Kitakyushu City is aiming to redevelop through a land readjustment project. Many of the stores damaged by the fire are trying to resume operations by relocating to temporary stores or vacant stores in the neighborhood. On the other hand, there are many voices of regret for stores that retain the retro townscape and Showa-era atmosphere that were lost in the fire.

Donations and messages of support from citizens and tourists are being collected for the reconstruction of Dangae Market. In addition, gourmet websites and blogs introducing specialty dishes and local products of Tangae Market are also gaining popularity. Tangae Market is a valuable place that conveys the history and culture of Kitakyushu City. Recovery from the fire and redevelopment of the area will require the cooperation and interest of many people. 🙏

Well, technically tomorrow 2 June, but I somehow finished this today.

I thought I'd have finished the Krang infection comic by now so I could have a happy birthday ending, but we're not there yet.
