Navigating Everyday Situations with Spanish Proficiency
Tumblr media
Navigating everyday situations with Spanish proficiency enables individuals to communicate effectively in diverse contexts. It equips them with the skills needed to navigate the complexities of daily life, whether ordering food at a local restaurant, asking for directions, or engaging in casual conversations with native speakers.
Spanish proficiency encompasses a spectrum of linguistic competencies that enable individuals to engage with others. Whether engaging in small talk with colleagues or negotiating a business deal, effective communication in Spanish fosters connections and builds rapport.
Writing skills play a crucial role in navigating everyday situations with Spanish proficiency. From composing emails to filling out forms, articulating thoughts cohesively in written form is essential. It helps people write content such as casual notes or formal letters, empowering them to communicate effectively across various mediums.
In addition to speaking and writing, listening comprehension is paramount for navigating real-world scenarios in Spanish. This is handy when listening to conversations or following instructions in a classroom setting. Developing listening skills enables individuals to understand language and context. Active listening fosters empathy and understanding, facilitating meaningful interactions with native speakers.
Furthermore, reading proficiency in Spanish enhances one's ability to navigate everyday situations. Whether perusing a menu at a local cafe or reading street signs in a foreign city, literacy skills are indispensable for independent navigation. Reading comprehension extends beyond basic literacy, encompassing the ability to interpret complex texts, such as news articles or literary works, in Spanish. A robust vocabulary and understanding of grammar rules further enrich the reading experience, enabling individuals to engage with diverse written materials. It also helps them access information from other sources, such as online content, browsing websites, or watching Spanish-language films. Individuals can stay informed and entertained while broadening their understanding of Spanish-speaking cultures.
In real-world scenarios, Spanish proficiency enables individuals to navigate numerous situations with confidence and ease. For instance, when traveling to Spanish-speaking countries, proficiency in the language facilitates seamless interactions with locals, from ordering meals to seeking assistance with travel arrangements. Moreover, in multicultural environments, proficiency in Spanish promotes inclusivity and cultural exchange, bridging linguistic barriers and fostering mutual understanding. It can also help when dealing with emergencies, such as seeking medical assistance, reporting incidents to authorities, or asking for help during unforeseen circumstances. An individual can effectively communicate their needs and ensure timely assistance.
In professional settings, Spanish proficiency opens doors to career advancement and opportunities for cross-cultural collaboration. Whether working in international business, health care, or education, proficiency in Spanish enhances one's ability to communicate with colleagues, clients, and stakeholders from diverse linguistic backgrounds. Likewise, in industries such as translation and interpretation, mastery of Spanish language skills is invaluable, enabling individuals to facilitate communication between speakers of different languages.
Spanish proficiency also enhances social interactions and networking opportunities within local communities and online platforms. From making friends to participating in cultural events, proficient Spanish speakers can engage with a diverse range of people, fostering connections and building meaningful relationships.
Beyond its practical applications, Spanish proficiency enriches personal and cultural experiences, enhancing connections with Spanish-speaking communities worldwide. Proficiency in the language deepens appreciation for diverse cultures and perspectives, whether immersing oneself in Spanish literature, music, or cinema. Moreover, language learning provides cognitive benefits, such as improved memory, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills, enhancing overall cognitive function.

Day 1-
Tumblr media Tumblr media
🌟 Day 1 at DiMella Shaffer was a captivating immersion into the world of architectural brilliance! 🏢 The morning kicked off with an enchanting office tour, revealing a space carefully curated to inspire creativity. The warm welcome from the amazing employees instantly made me feel at home.
What added a delightful touch to the workplace were the conference rooms named after different parts of Boston – from Hyde Park to Mattapan, each room seemed to tell a story.
A highlight of the day was our session with Cipriana Galvao, where she generously shared insights into the hiring process. Her advice on handling interviews, salary negotiations, and more was invaluable. It felt like a roadmap to navigating the professional landscape.
Later in the day, I had the privilege of sitting down with a Senior Associate- Amanda Solinsky. Our candid discussion delved into the intricacies of licensure, AXP, and ARE's. Their wisdom provided a deeper understanding of the architectural journey ahead.
Overall, Day 1 was a perfect blend of fun and learning. The positive energy in the office and the wealth of knowledge shared made me truly relish every moment. Thrilled for the days to come! 🌆📐

Expanding the conversation about aging

Expanding the conversation about aging
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Many issues facing older adults intersect with other social inequalities, but experts often fail to keep the experiences of historically underserved communities in mind when discussing aging.
Since 2020, the MIT AgeLab’s Aging and Equity Speaker Series has sought to bring together researchers, advocates, and practitioners who aim to understand how aging-related issues affect a broad array of communities.
“We think it’s important to offer a platform at MIT that amplifies the work of researchers who are thinking about issues like intersectionality and identity across the lifespan as people age,” says series co-coordinator Taylor Patskanick, who is a researcher at the AgeLab. “We’re highlighting people who have dedicated their careers to doing work with vulnerable older adults.”
Since the series began in 2020, speakers have hosted conversations on topics like diversity in financial planning, climate and sustainability, and equitable design of new technologies. Others have presented work on the social determinants of health for aging Latin Americans and measuring livability with different communities.
The Aging and Equity series typically holds events each quarter. Speakers have come from national universities, nonprofits such as AARP, and organizations like the architecture firm DiMella Shaffer. Patskanick says one aim in recruiting speakers is to highlight researchers and practitioners who are early in their careers.
Attendees are often members of the MIT community, including students, faculty, and alumni. Some sessions have attracted hundreds of registrants, including many from outside MIT.
Early last year, an event on climate change and health featuring Latrica Best, an associate professor at Boston College, attracted MIT researchers and students as well as older adults concerned about their grandchildren’s future. Older attendees said the talk encouraged them to explore how they might engage in climate activism locally.
Another event featured Philippe Saad, co-founder of LGBTQ Senior Housing Inc. and principal at DiMella Shaffer, who walked through his organization’s creation of the first LGBTQ-friendly housing development in Boston for older adults, known as The Pryde.
The series has helped the AgeLab consider new issues to explore in their research. For instance, Patskanick says sessions have promoted conversations among AgeLab researchers about representation in their studies and how they sample different identities and populations of older adults.
“The series has enabled us to think about how equity comes up in our projects,” Patskanick says. “We’ve done some work on older adults and vaccination, for instance, and after an aging and equity session we hosted, we ended up adjusting how we collected data on various subgroups of older adults that would be robust enough to allow us to look across and within different cultural identities to understand their intersection with how people make decisions about vaccinations.”
The series has also given AgeLab researchers new ideas for inquiry.
“The series has helped inform research questions for us about how people across a greater variety of backgrounds plan for retirement and make financial decisions,” says Sophia Ashebir, who manages the series with Patskanick. “We’ve taken a more nuanced approach in terms of how we think about and measure income, for example.”
With every event, the speaker series contributes to a more inclusive understanding of the issues surrounding older adults, which harkens back to the founding mission of the AgeLab.
“The mission of the AgeLab, put roughly, is to make older people’s lives better,’” Ashebir says. “With this speaker series, we’re trying to amplify the voices of marginalized groups and draw light to new research and initiatives within the field of aging. I think those goals go hand in hand.”

PHOTO RESEARCHER
A Photo Researcher is not a common career. In fact, I was unable to find a listing under the Occupational Outlook Handbook to get a job description and other details like was able to for the Private Investigator. I was, however, able to find a Linkedin blog post by an actual Photo Researcher, Nicole Demella. Other titles are Picture Researcher, Media Researcher, and Visual Researcher, all of which are not found in the Occupational Outlook Handbook either. (https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/what-does-photo-researcher-do-exactly-nicole-dimella/)
According to Nicole, is a "professional who is asked to locate and/or obtain permission to use relevant images for a piece of media." Her job scope consists of researching illustrations, artwork, video footage, or mixed media or locating and licensing images for books, magazines, TV, advertisements, and more. A successful photo researcher can locate and obtain permission for the use of images for as low a cost as possible.
I found a job posting by Dotash Meredith, America's largest digital and print publisher based in New York, and this is how they describe the job function for the Photo Researcher (for PEOPLE magazine) they are looking for (https://meredith.wd5.myworkdayjobs.com/EXT/job/New-York--NY-225-Liberty/Photo-Researcher_JR11192):
75% Photo research for weekly PEOPLE print magazines
15% Photo research and tooling of images for PEOPLE website
5% Invoicing and billing for images used in their stories they research
5% Digital asset management and coordination
Must have a bachelor's degree in a related field or equivalent training/experience and 1-2 years of related experience. The pay rate is between $22-$28 per hour.
Some of the specific knowledge and skills they are looking for are general knowledge of stock photos and paparazzi agencies, fluent in Adobe Photoshop, InDesign, and Bridge, interest and knowledge of celebrities, and bonus if they are Royals and must be a strong visual aesthetic and conceptual thinker.
DATABASES
A photo researcher has a vast amount of resources to use to locate images. Just a simple Google image search could pull up hundreds of images that need to be found. However, trying to obtain licensing and permission would take more effort as the photo researcher must contact the owner and negotiate the right to use the image.
ARTSTOR (similar to JSTOR) I found we have access to via UMA (https://library-artstor-org.wv-o-ursus-proxy05.ursus.maine.edu/#/). You access art and multimedia from the Artstor digital library, institutional collections, and public collections. All images contain the owner's information. They have about 300 collections containing over two million images. Artstor supports all study disciplines such as anthropology, archaeology, and modern history. I would be a great resource for a photo researcher who is hired by a book author or publisher writing a non-fiction book and needs images to include in the print, but probably will not be helpful to the photo researcher who will be hired by PEOPLE magazine. It is important to know that ARTSTOR will be moving to JSTOR as of 08/01/2024.
THE GETTY RESEARCH INSITITUTE (https://www.getty.edu/research/tools/photo/guide.html) has a database containing a photo archive with two million photographs of photographic reproduction of Western art, architecture, and decorative arts. You can also find notable works and collections and major collections in topics such as architecture and design, video and performance, and emblem collections.
WORLD PRESS PHOTO (https://www.worldpressphoto.org/) promotes freedom of expression and freedom of the press and showcases a database filled with photography submitted by individuals that relate to the most pressing issues facing the world. They even have a photo contest (https://www.worldpressphoto.org/collection/photocontest/2023/winners) and flagship exhibitions.
SHUTTERSTOCK is a database with a VAST amount of photo topics you are looking for. Most of their images have a cost, but they also feature royalty-free images that you can download for free and it provides information about the photographer. Shutterstock seems to be an image database where photographers/contributors submit their work for payment and Shutterstock receives the rights to sell their images. In terms of photo researchers, they would work directly with Shutterstock to get licensing and permission for the images.
REAL-LIFE PHOTO RESEARCHERS
Besides Nicole Demella which I mentioned in the beginning finding her Linkedin Blog, I have a hard time finding other actual photo researchers. I decided to look back in Linkedin to find other photo researchers and unfortunately, I was able to get a list but did not have access to their profiles.
Tumblr media
Here's a YouTube short of supposedly a photo researcher. There's really no background and context of this person so I am not sure where she works and exactly her scope of work.

Band T-Shirts 2: The Carpenters.
Music has always been extremely important to me. Therefore hundreds of band t-shirts have passed through my life. Most of them are gone (never occured to me when I was young that they could become valuable). Some I still have and on rare occasions I may even buy a new one. Here are some of them. Vintage, new, originals, replicas, cheap, expensive. All kinds really.

Introduction- Saisha Rao Voodi
👋 Hello everyone! I'm Saisha Rao Voodi, a B.Arch student from South India currently navigating my 6th semester in Boston. 🏙️ In my three years here, I've become deeply involved in shaping our campus community. From tutoring at the LRC to buzzing around as a Beekeeper and serving as the President of BAC Cultural, I've been on a journey of fostering positivity and engagement.
My academic journey extends beyond the campus, with experiences in a design firm where I wore hats as a design and admin admittatur. As a Teaching Assistant, I've shared my passion for architecture with high school students. 🎓
Beyond the drafting table, I wield a paintbrush for watercolor creations since the age of 15, groove to the rhythm of dance, and nurture gardens. ✨ Traveling is my muse, and a backpacking trip across Europe is a dream on my horizon.
Currently, I'm thrilled about my externship with DiMella Shaffer, a design haven where creativity thrives. One project that caught my eye is Sitkowski Apartments, showcasing their commitment to innovative design. 🌟
Excitement and curiosity fuel my journey, and I can't wait to share this chapter of exploration and growth with you all! 🌈✈️
