Dick Groat, one of Major League Baseball’s leading shortstops of his time, is pictured here batting for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1962. He helped take the team to its first World Series championship in 35 years in 1960 by defeating the New York Yankees. In that same year, he won the National League’s batting championship and Most Valuable Player Award.
In 1964, he anchored the infield for the St. Louis Cardinals when they won the World Series. And he was a five-time All-Star.

July 10, 1962 - President Kennedy clearly enjoyed himself at the All-Star Game today. Before the start of the game, Stan Musial of the National League and Luis Aparicio of the American were called to his box for a special audience. Then the President tossed out the first ball into the waiting mitt of Earl Battey, Twins catcher. In the top of the second, he shed his jacket, and a few minutes later was vigorously applauding a fast double play from Orlando Cepeda to Dick Groat, covering second, and back to Don Drysdale, who ran from the mound to cover first. The President also had a soft drink and smoked one of his short cigars.

Lest We Forget: Dick Groat
Dick Groat, an eight-time All-Star who won the NL MVP award in 1960 while playing shortstop for the Pittsburgh Pirates, died April 27 at the age of 92. Here’s his obituary by Richard Goldstein in The New York Times. (The Times piece notes he was a five-time All-Star, but I’m saying eight since they played two games each year from 1959-62.)
