Taste of the Wild vs Orijen
https://www.centralparkpaws.net/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Princess-pup-demands-high-quality-good-tasting-dry-dog-food.jpg Taste of the Wild (TotW) versus Orijen, who will win?
In our household, we’ve tried more than 50% of the different popular brands, and some not so popular.
Our household is made up of dogs with food allergies (Sophie and Calvin), heart disease (Daisy), Cushing Disease (Daisy and Sophie), high energy (Ginger), seniors, and picky eaters.
Finding a dog food that works for everyone can be pretty tricky.
There have been a select few that work for everyone, but more often we have multiple kinds of dog food in the pantry.
Picking the right food has become a more daunting task for many dog parents.
Why Should You Choose a High-Quality Dog Food?
I remember a time when buying dog food was as easy as throwing a bag of dog food in your grocery cart.
You should choose high-quality, delicious dog food because your prince or princess is worth it
Unfortunately, the ease and convenience of those days are gone for most of us.
With so many special needs and dog food varieties, the combination options are astronomical. Every dog is unique, and most have special dietary needs due to:
Size
Age
Health – GI Issues, disease, allergies, etc.
Weight (Both gain and loss)
Breed (German Shepherds, Golden Retrievers, and Goldendoodles shouldn’t always eat the same food)
Activity Level
It’s incredible how many variables need to meet to come up with the right food for your dog.
With so many brands and recalls, it’s hard to know which one is the best choice to go with.

Taste of the Wild
Taste of the Wild Company History
Diamond Pet Company carries many different brands, one of which is Taste of the Wild.
The company started back in 1970 by two brothers-in-law and has grown quite rapidly.
Even though TotW has become a substantially large company, it has remained family owned since the beginning.
TotW has plants from California to South Carolina, with a few more in between. They have 5 manufacturing locations in total.
TotW uses sustainable and humanely raised ingredients. The formulas were developed based on a canines’ ancestral dietary requirements.
The commitment TotW makes to their customers is that it manufactures “…a high-quality, yet affordable pet food option.”
If you’re interested in learning more about this dog food brand, we reviewed Taste of the Wild in-depth here!
Taste of the Wild Varieties
TotW currently offers 9 different dry dog food varieties.
Of those foods, some are specifically tailored to the needs of small breeds and puppies.
Taste of the Wild 3 Best Sellers of Dry Dog Food:
High Prairie – Roasted Bison and Venison
Pacific Stream – Smoked Salmon
Sierra Mountain – Roasted Lamb

Orijen
Orijen Company History
Orijen is one of two brands created by Champion Pet Foods, which originated in Canada. It was founded by Reinhard Muhlenfeld in 1985.
Exporting goods from Canada has not a common practice, but with aid from the Canadian government, Champion Pet Foods has been quite successful in selling their dog food globally.
Orijen’s approach to marketing is a bit unconventional.
Orijen doesn’t utilize traditional marketing plans but instead relies on their outside sales force and word of mouth.
Orijen Varieties
Orijen has 8 different dry dog food varieties, not including their freeze-dried food line.

Recalls and Lawsuits
Taste of the Wild
Diamond Pet Food has had several recalls, though TotW has only had a single incident in May of 2012.
The recall was for salmonella contamination at the plant in South Carolina. Dry dog food was the only one with contamination issues.
The production codes needed to be checked to verify if the food had salmonella issues. Food with codes having a 2 or 3 in the 9th space and an X in the next space were part of the recall.
Corrections to the manufacturing plants were successful in ensuring future issues did not arise.
However, there are two lawsuits filed against Diamond Pet Food specifically around the TotW brand.
Note that anybody can file a lawsuit and they are not evidence of guilt until ruled so by a judge
The two lawsuits are similar in nature, the first one was in August 2018 and the second one was filed in February 2019. The 2018 suit accuses TotW of food contamination in the following three varieties:
Prairie Canine Formula Roasted Bison and Roasted Venison Dry Dog Food
Pacific Stream Canine Formula Smoked Salmon Dry Dog Food
Puppy Formula Grain-Free.
The 2019 suit involves five varieties:
Prairie Canine Formula Roasted Bison and Roasted Venison Dry Dog Food
Pacific Stream Canine Formula Smoked Salmon Dry Dog Food
Prairie Puppy Formula Grain-Free
Southwest Canyon with Beef in Gravy
Southwest Canyon with Wild Boar
Both lawsuits allege the foods are contaminated with pesticides, heavy metal (arsenic, lead, mercury, and cadmium), acrylamide, and BPA.
Orijen
Orijen has not had any recalls in the United States.
Coincidentally, Orijen also had a lawsuit for similar contamination claims as TotW. This lawsuit was filed in March of 2018 but was later dismissed in February of 2019.
TotW’s lawsuits may end the same way.
What’s Important When Choosing a Dog Food?
There are several things to consider when looking for the perfect dog food.
Often, we talk about ingredients, and that’s a big part of the decision-making process, but it isn’t the only thing to take into account.
Where the food is manufactured
Where the ingredients are sourced

Comparison of Taste of the Wild vs. Orijen
Ingredients
  Winner: Orijen
These two brands have many similarities which made them fun to compare.
They both fashion their food on the more primal needs of our dogs, they both are grain free, and both brands are protein focused.
In addition to the philosophies behind their food they both outline, in the guaranteed analysis section, the Omega-6 & 3 fatty acid content.
Orijen
Orijen designed their recipes to be 85% prime animal protein, 15% fruit and vegetables, and 0% grains and potatoes.
All of their foods are packed with superfoods like pumpkin, kale, and spinach.
Also, Orijen has included pumpkin and sunflower seeds in their recipes. They use a variety of beans and lentils to make up for the lack of traditional grains and potatoes.
Their guaranteed analysis reflects 38% minimum protein, which is substantially higher than most dog foods, including TotW. Another thing Orijen does that many other dog food companies shy away from is use organ meat in their foods.
Organ meats may sound icky, but they are healthy and nutritious.
The aspect of this food I don’t like is the lack of traditional carbohydrates. Many dogs need grains and easily digestible potatoes.
Taste of the Wild
TotW includes potatoes and lentils in their foods to make up for the lack of grains. They have also included potato and pea flour in place of wheat or rice flours.
The first two ingredients in their best sellers are high-quality animal proteins, and though it does have some fruits and vegetables it’s nothing compared to Orijen’s list of superfoods.
Price and Value
  Winner: Taste of the Wild
This was an easy pick.
Their food is in line with their goals of being of an excellent dog food at a low price. The average cost per pound for TotW is under two dollars while the average cost per pound for Orijen is over four dollars!
Availability
  Winner: Taste of the Wild
TotW is available in most pet food retail stores, both in person and online.
They are even found in some hardware stores, doggy daycares, specialty grocery stores, and vet clinics.
Orijen has similar availability in pet stores, but they cannot be found in grocery or hardware stores, only in pet-focused retail locations or online.
And even then, not at as many online retailers.
  Taste
  Winner: Orijen
Almost a tie, but because I had to choose (Daisy hasn’t learned how to write or speak English yet), Orijen wins by a small margin.
I believe it was the unique kinds of proteins that gave Orijen that extra push.
The X Factor
  Winner: Orijen
Orijen offers specially formulated recipes for seniors, puppies, and a weight management variety.
Also, Orijen’s fatty acid content is significantly higher than most dog foods.
As an added bonus, they have added chondroitin and glucosamine into their recipes!
Overall
  Winner: Taste of the Wild
Orijen is in a class all of its own. With the high-end ingredients, the extreme levels of protein, and the abundance of superfoods, it’s hard to beat.
If you can afford to give your pupper a tiara, then Orijen is priced right for you
But like we mentioned before, ingredients aren’t everything.
Though Orijen can justify the price, it does make it cost prohibitive to the majority of dog owners. Especially if you own multiple dogs!
Taste of the Wild is a reasonably priced dog food and has the added benefit of being easy to find.
TotW is a quality dog food with an appropriate protein content that’s more suited to dogs with an average or activity level.
However, if your dog needs a high protein diet, such as working, sporting, or extremely athletic dogs, Orijen would be the best option.
Also, if your dog would benefit from the higher fatty acid, chondroitin, and glucosamine levels, such as dogs with arthritis or extremely active dogs, then Orijen would also be the better option.

If you have a dog that suffers from chronic skin issues or allergies, then switching to the best grain free dog food can be a perfect solution. This type of pet food is often highly recommended by vets. There are many options for grain free pet food on the market, but in most cases, you’ll need to do more than just scan the label, since there are cheap options that contain low quality ingredients. Like every dog lover, you want the best for your dog, which is why researching grain free foods is a must, if you want to make the switch to a high-quality formula, one that contains all the vitamins and nutrients your dog needs to thrive.
I’ve put together this buyer’s guide, which includes important information concerning what to look for in a top-quality grain free food, what ingredients to avoid, and how to make the switch from traditional food to grain-free, in order to avoid digestive upset. Crave Grain Free Adult Dog Food
Our Rating: (4/5)
This high protein grain-free dog food is designed for adults. The main protein sources include salmon and white fish. This formula is perfect for dogs of all ages. However, the high protein content comes in at thirty-four percent, so it’s not a good choice for dogs over the age of seven, since older dogs are not as active. The food is free from soy, wheat, corn, harmful fillers, and includes dense carb sources including peas. The high protein content makes this food an excellent choice for active dogs and can help to promote lean muscle gain, provides a natural, healthy fuel source, and will boost immune health. The all-natural ingredients will aid in digestion and can improve both skin and coat health.
Pros
Contains two high quality protein sources
Perfect for high energy dogs
All-natural ingredients
Soy-free
Cons
High protein content makes this food a poor choice for less active dogs
Conclusion
This food is designed for adults, but if you have a dog that’s overweight or not very active, then this food can cause them to gain weight. The high protein content makes the food a better choice for very active dogs and will promote muscle gain, coat health, skin health, immune health, and will also aid in digestion, so it’s also a good choice for dogs with a sensitive stomach. While it’s not a good choice for dogs over the age of seven, it includes all of the vitamins, minerals, and nutrients that young active dogs need to thrive.

Grain-Free Dog Food Buyer’s Guide
Traditional dog food is grain-based and usually contains a combination of soy, rice, rye, oats, barley, corn, and wheat. While these are all good sources of carbs, many brands often contain a higher carb content than what’s needed. Many pet owners decide to make the switch to grain-free foods because some pets have a grain allergy. However, in many cases, an allergy is often linked to the protein source. Beef is often linked to food allergies in dogs. Many top grain-free pet foods contain a higher quality protein source, but not all grain-free foods are created equal. Some may contain too many carbs, which is why it’s important to ensure the product’s main protein source doesn’t come from starch, but from meat. Before I dive into what types of ingredients to look for in a top quality formula, first, I’ll go over some of the benefits of making the switch to this kind of pet food, and how it can help to improve digestion, minimize skin issues, and improve coat health.
Benefits of Grain-Free Dog Food
Many pet owners don’t know much about grain-free food and the benefits that are linked to making this type of dietary change.
Below, I’ll go over some of the most important benefits of a grain-free diet and how it can have a positive impact on your pet’s health.
Many dogs have digestive issues when it comes to grains. Dogs that have trouble digesting grains may experience serious health issues such as rashes, inflammation, and gastrointestinal disease. Making the switch to a grain-free diet aids in digestion and allows the body to more efficiently utilize important nutrients.
For dogs with allergies, a food that’s grain-free is a perfect fit. Many owners have reported that their pet’s allergy symptoms disappeared entirely or decreased significantly. Allergy symptoms can include vomiting, rashes, constipation, loose stool, chewing, licking, and biting skin, and frequent skin infections. If your pet is experiencing any of these symptoms you should make an appointment with their vet in order to rule out any serious medical conditions. During this time, you can discuss the option of switching to a grain-free formula. This will allow you to determine whether or not your dog has a grain allergy, if their symptoms subside after making the switch.
In most cases, the medical benefits that are linked to grain-free food are enough to get many pet owners to make the switch, but did you know that a grain-free diet can also improve the appearance of your dog’s coat? On this type of diet, you may notice that your dog smells better, their teeth are whiter, and their coat is shinier.
Because a high-quality grain-free food doesn’t contain any additives or fillers, it will help to keep a dog feeling fuller, longer. These formulas consist of high-quality fats and proteins, so you won’t have to feed them a large serving, like you do with grain-based dog foods.
In many cases, the indigestible fibers that are found in wheat and corn are what’s responsible for loose stool in dogs. Tapioca and potatoes which replace the carb content in grain-free foods will act as a type of thickening agent, which can result in smaller stool. It also means that your dog will not have to go to the bathroom as often.
Protein is the main ingredient that will fuel a dog, providing them with energy. Since grain-free formulas contain animal-based protein sources, instead of mainly plant-based protein sources, you’ll notice right away that your dog has more energy.
A diet that’s loaded with grains can lead to excessive gas. This can cause chronic cramps and discomfort in dogs. With a grain-free diet, you’ll notice that your dog is no longer dealing with excessive gas, which will be a good thing for both the owner and the dog.
When a dog eats grains, a film of carbs will coat their teeth. These particles will eventually be washed away by their saliva, but this is a process that can take several hours. During this time, the bacteria in your dog’s mouth will begin to feed on this carb film, which is what creates a foul odor. This means you’ll no longer have to deal with bad doggy breath when you make the switch to a grain-free diet.
Now that you know more about the benefits of dogs eating a grain-free dog food, let’s take a closer look at what factors you’ll want to consider when you’re shopping around for a new food, to ensure you choose the best product for your dog.
Important Features
When you’re looking for a high-quality grain-free formula, you’ll need to be careful concerning what ingredients are in the food. Grain-free formulas are often very high in protein and contain a better quality of protein. But the other ingredients added to these formulas are also important.
Below, you’ll find a list of the most common ingredients that are found in grain-free formulas.
Legumes
Legumes are high in protein. Legumes that are often found in grain-free foods include lentils, soybeans, peas, and chickpeas.
Potatoes
Many brands will include either white potatoes or sweet potatoes.
Protein Source
A high-quality formula will offer more than just a lack of grains. It’s more about the balance of nutrients, whole ingredients, and protein type and quality. The formula should contain real animal-based protein as the primary ingredient. This protein is easier for your dog to digest, so it will be easily absorbed into a dog’s body where it will then be utilized by different tissues and organs.
If a dog is allergic to certain types of proteins such as chicken and beef, there are still plenty of options to choose from, including:
Turkey
Duck
Lamb
Fish
Whole Carbs
If you want to make the switch to a grain-free food, then look for a product that includes veggies and fruits in the recipe. Fruits and veggies are loaded with essential antioxidants, minerals, and vitamins, all of which will offer many health benefits.
Ingredients to Avoid
Just because a food is labeled grain-free doesn’t mean it’s healthy. In fact, there are many types of ingredients that you should avoid at all costs, including:
Vegetable oil
Salt
Xylitol
Sugar alcohols
Artificial colors
White flour
MSG
Cheap fillers
BHA and BHT
Rendered fats
Corn syrup
Artificial sweeteners
By-product meal
Flavor enhancers and fillers are commonly used to improve the flavor of the food. Even if the formula includes flavor enhancers, make sure that they come from a natural ingredient. Anything that’s labeled as artificial will be potentially harmful to your pet. Look for formulas that promote a well-balanced diet and contain a healthy amount of oils, veggies, fruits, and protein.
The Truth About Grain Allergies
When it comes to dog food allergies, it can be pretty complicated. In many cases, protein is the offending food and it’s also one of the most common types of allergen. However, not all proteins will trigger allergies and sensitivities. According to some studies, the most common allergens include the following:
Soy
Wheat
Corn
Eggs
Dairy
Beef
Chicken
But if fed regularly, grains can be a major allergen that can cause issues with your pet’s digestive system. However, your pet may also be experiencing an allergic reaction to the type of protein found in their food. The key will be to experiment with different combinations of ingredients in order to determine which type works the best. If your pet is allergic to grains, then making the switch to a grain-free food will be a good decision and one that can make all the difference in terms of their activity level and their health.
The Pros and Cons of Changing Your Dog’s Diet
There is plenty of debate concerning whether or not grain-free food is the best choice for dogs. The argument for grain-free foods is pretty simple. Many pet owners believe that a grain-free formula is more natural and similar to a dog’s ancestral diet. Because dogs are carnivores many pet owners also believe that plant-based protein sources should also be limited. However, this has been debunked by science. Overtime, dogs have developed the ability to digest most types of grains. Others advocate for a grain-free diet because they believe that grains are the most common culprit behind pet allergies. However, as I mentioned earlier, certain types of proteins, such as chicken and beef are often to blame.
The most common grains found in dog food includes white rice, soy, wheat, and corn. They’re a cheap source of carbs and they provide an additional amount of protein. Protein is essential in a dog’s diet. When you look at the label on dog food, you’ll often come to realize that food that’s high in protein actually contains a higher percentage of protein that’s plant based. This is usually in the form of wheat or corn, with only a small amount of animal protein included.
High Glycemic Foods
Many of these low-quality grains that make up most of a dog’s diet are high on the glycemic index. This index rates a food based on how high and how quickly they can cause blood sugar to rise. High glycemic index carbs can produce a type of inflammatory response in dogs. This can lead to cancer, arthritis, heart disease, diabetes, and obesity. Some foods have been found to cause sensitivities or intolerance. Food sensitivities and intolerances can build up over time. This can result in problems that can be misdiagnosed such as skin allergies and GI issues. Both of these issues can be a direct result of your dog’s diet. Some pet owners may end up feeding their dogs more of these grain-loaded foods because they give their dogs a burst of energy, however, this energy doesn’t last all day, which means a dog will usually be hungry and ready to eat again a few hours after their meal.
Common Allergens
Grain-free formulas usually contain more concentrated energy sources. They also often contain a higher quality of fat and protein that comes from animal sources. These foods can help to meet a dog’s nutritional needs in smaller quantities, so a pet owner will end up giving their pet less food, but their dogs will receive all the fat, protein, and essential vitamins and nutrients they need, despite this smaller serving size.
Grains such as wheat or corn can end up activating food sensitivities. Choosing a grain-free formula will prevent this.
Wheat
Wheat is a type of a cheap source of protein. It contains gluten which is a sticky type of protein that’s known to cause issues in people with a gluten allergy or intolerance.
Soy
In moderation, soy can be completely fine. It’s often found in dog food and used as a source of protein in order to boost a food’s protein percentage. However, there’s a good reason why it shouldn’t be part of your dog’s diet. This involves the issues that revolve around the manufacturing process. Ninety percent of soy is genetically modified. The beans are mashed into fats and oils and the meal is separated out. Food meant for humans will use the oil and fat, while the meal is used for animals. Soy contains a high volume of natural toxins that can cause issues in many of the organ systems. It can have a negative impact on the thyroid gland and hinder hormone production.
Corn
Corn isn’t exactly harmful. In some cases, it can even be beneficial. It provides a natural protein source, and works as a digestible carb, making it an important energy source. However, it also contains contaminants that can put a dog’s health at risk. While the corn people eat is frozen, canned, or fresh, corn that’s found in dog food is not the same. The cheapest feed grade corn is what’s commonly used, so the corn may be contaminated with mycotoxins. Food that has corn listed as the first ingredient can be high in protein, but the protein content is mostly plant-based, instead of animal-based. Animal-based protein is superior to plant-based, when it comes to the canine diet.
Introducing Grain-Free Dog Food to Your Pet
Many pet owners are eager to make the switch to grain-free dog food, in order to help treat their dog’s skin issues. Unfortunately, this type of transition, if not done correctly, can cause digestive upset. Quickly transitioning to a new food is not good for a dog’s sensitive digestive tract. Pet owners must make the transition gradually in order to give their dog’s digestive tract time to adjust to the new food. The bacteria that lives in the gut has an important job, making vitamin K, absorbing water and nutrients, fermenting fiber, and creating short-chain fatty acids. Suddenly feeding a dog a new type of pet food will interrupt these important functions and can have a negative impact on beneficial bacteria.
Some of the common signs that can indicate you’ve made the switch too quickly can include:
Vomiting
Constipation
Diarrhea
Flatulence
Bloating
A Gradual Transition
Begin the transition by mixing some of your pet’s new food with their current food. Do this for several days in order to give his or her digestive tract some time to make the adjustment. Many vets recommend a period of ten days to gradually and slowly add in the new pet food while reducing the amount of old pet food in their diet.
Ideally, you should start with approximately ten percent of the new food and ninety percent of the old food. You’ll increase the amount of new food by ten percent each day, while decreasing the amount of their old food by ten percent each day.
Monitor Your Pet Closely
If your dog experiences any type of digestive upset during the transition, then you may need to slow down the process even more. At the first sign of digestive issues, you will need to go back to feeding your dog the balance of old food and new food that they were able to tolerate without any issues. Feed them that combination for a period of three to four days, then start up the transition once again. Avoid using any type of home remedy for an upset stomach and speak with your vet instead.
If your dog has any type of medical condition, make sure you consult your vet about making the transition to a new type of food. This is because some health problems can be negatively impacted by a change in diet.
If your dog currently has weight issues, then you should also consult your vet. A pet that struggles with weight issues will need foods that are designed to supply essential nutrients in increased concentrations in order to prevent malnutrition.
The High Cost of Grain-Free Food
One of the biggest drawbacks of making the switch to a grain-free food is the price. These foods are often much more expensive than grain dog food since they contain a higher level of animal-based protein and a better quality of ingredients. However, if your dog’s health is the top priority, then the higher cost of a top-quality pet food will be worth every penny. Like traditional dog food, the cost of grain-free foods will vary from brand to brand and can depend on the size of the dog food bag and the type of protein source.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is it Really Healthier for a Dog to Eat Grain-Free?
While a dog needs carbs in order to produce energy, too many carbs can lead to high levels of bad bacteria in the gut, obesity, and low energy levels. What matters is the carb source and the protein source. In most cases, grain-free is a better choice because it contains a better quality of carbs and protein and a higher level of animal-based protein.
What are the Best Grains for Dogs?
Rice and oatmeal are good grain sources for most dogs. These healthy grains can easily be incorporated into a dog’s diet and do not have a reputation for causing an allergic reaction in pets. Both grains are also very gentle on the stomach.
What Grains to Avoid in Dog Food?
Many vets recommend avoiding wheat and corn and all grains that contain gluten. Avoid feeding dogs grains that have been genetically modified. Instead, choose more nutritious grains such as buckwheat.
Is Quinoa Harmful to Dogs
Quinoa is normally a healthy food choice for dogs however, some dogs may have trouble digesting it. If your pet becomes constipated, has diarrhea, or vomits after eating quinoa, then avoid feeding it to him or her again.
Are Sweet Potatoes Good for Dogs?
Yes. Sweet potatoes are a healthy, natural, and safe treat for dogs. This veggie offers a wide range of health benefits and supports a healthy digestive tract, due to their high fiber content. They’re also high in vitamins A, C, and B6.
Final Thoughts
The best grain-free dog food can have a major impact on your dog’s digestive health, activity level, and skin and coat health. If your dog has a sensitive stomach or allergies, then making the switch to a grain-free formula can make all the difference in their quality of life. It’s important to choose a food that’s not just grain-free but loaded with healthy carbs, high-quality animal protein, and free from harmful ingredients.

Ingredients
The above recipe contains several ingredients that include proteins, minerals, vitamins and other superfoods.
The first main ingredient is chicken.
Chicken is a common ingredient in dog foods and it provides the dogs with high quality fat and protein.
The second main ingredient in the recipe is:
Chicken meal, produced through the rendering process.
Rendering helps to reduce the chicken’s natural moisture, which in turn makes the recipe a source of highly condensed protein.

Oat groats, the fourth ingredient provides dietary fiber, minerals and vitamins while
Pearled barley the fifth ingredient provides dietary fiber and carbohydrates.
Others notable ingredients are brown rice, potato, menhaden meal, dried egg product, carrots, celery, sweet potatoes, alfalfa meal, salmon oil, and brewers yeast. Still on the ingredient list are flaxseed, whole oats, dried tomato pomace, cheese, duck, lamb, whole barley, chicory root Vitamins D3, A, E and B12 and many other ingredients.

Customer reviews
The average star rating for this product from customers that have fed their dogs with it was 4.6 stars out of 5. Majority of the reviews were positive but you do not have to take our word for it. Below is what some of the satisfied customers said about the dog food.
E.Docton gave the food a five star rating and had this to say, “This food is awesome! We purchased this for our German shepherd puppy and she’s been in it for a month and half. She eats this up like candy and her coat is beautiful. I think this has helped her grow a lot more than what she would have in regular food, I can’t wait for her to be on the “Adult” version so that all our 6 dogs can be on the same brand. Wonderful brand!”
Another satisfied customer Shane G also gave the food a five star rating and said this about the product. “My German shepherd loves it. I feed him in the morning and early evening, and he eats it all within an hour. I initially tried two other “high” quality foods and he never seemed to really care for them. At four months old, I started him on Fromm and he immediately ate it all, and it has been that way ever since. As for how the food affects Dallas, he has no health issues, no runny stools, he is not having a bowel movement every time I turn around (but when he does, it’s a good one) and no dry skin issues. In fact, I am amazed at how many compliments we get on how shiny he is. I have had other shepherds that “really” shed. Dallas sheds, but nothing like the others. I highly recommend trying Fromm for your dog”.
Da_bears also with a five star rating said; “American made, natural ingredients and the pup loves it. Coat looks great…highly recommended”

Verdict
Going by what the customers say about the product and from our own reviews, I would say that Fromm Gold Large Breed Puppy Dry Dog Food is worth a try if you want the best for your fast growing puppy. Some of the customers that gave their reviews said the price is on the higher side as compared to other dog foods. I can assure you that the quality of the recipe makes up for the difference in price because the product is worth its cost. I understand why the brand has over 4.5 stars and I would highly recommend it.
Wrapping it up
It is not a very easy thing finding the right recipe for your growing puppies. It is even harder if you are transitioning the dogs to another meal all together. The ingredients in this recipe are safe to the puppy’s digestive system and therefore you should not worry about any problems during the transition period. Because a growing puppy needs good health, strength and clean and healthy skin and coat, Fromm Gold Large Breed Puppy Dry Dog Food ensures that your puppy gets everything from the blend of ingredients in this recipe.

Nutro Ultra Large Breed Dry Puppy Food is a top-rated and holistic food for your dog. Nutro Ultra kibbles are produced through an extrusion process, making the food more nutritious and long-lasting. The manufacturing company uses Vitamin E for natural preservation. This food features three main proteins: Chicken, lamb, and Salmon
INGREDIENTS
High- quality ingredients have been incorporated to meet all the nutritional needs of your dog. This product meets the requirements established by AAFCO Dog Food Nutrients for healthy puppies. Let us have a detailed look at these ingredients
Chicken
This is the main ingredient found in the Nutro Large Breed Puppy Dry Dog Food. Whole chicken is an excellent source of protein but contains up to 60% moisture. The moisture concentration works to reduce the protein content of the chicken.
Chicken meal
This is achieved by cooking the chicken through a process known as rendering. This process reduces the natural moisture of the chicken, resulting in a more condensed protein source. Chicken meal is dried to a moisture level of less than 10%, with a protein content of 65% and 12% fat. It provides more protein than whole chicken.
Whole Brown Rice
This is one of the best grains for dogs. It is naturally rich in fiber and other essential minerals such as magnesium, phosphorus, and manganese. Brown rice is relatively easy to digest and will give your pet the energy it needs to carry through the day. Also, whole brown rice is good for weight management as it will make your dog feel full and avoid excessive eating.
Brewers Rice
These are the small fragments of rice grains that have been separated from the larger kernels that are milled. In other words, it is the processed rice product do not contain the same nutritional value as whole ground rice. Therefore, Brewer’s rice is regarded to be of lower quality
Whole grain oatmeal
This is another excellent source of dietary fiber. Besides, whole-grain oatmeal provides your dog with iron, Zinc, Manganese, B vitamins, antioxidants, and essential fatty acids. You are advised to cook the oatmeal before giving it to your dog. Also, ensure you serve your dog oatmeal made from whole grain oats as processed grains are less nutritional.
Ingredients in this product have been listed depending according to their pre-cooked weight. Therefore the first five components are the most important. However, the rest of the ingredients have also contributed significantly to the overall quality of this dog food. Let us review more elements.
Lamb meal and salmon meal
These incredible sources of protein have been produced through the rendering process. They have a reduced natural moisture level which results in highly condensed protein sources. Salmon is also a good source of Omega-3
Rice Bran
In general, rice grains are divided into three components; bran, germ, and endosperm. Bran, which is the outer layer of the grain, is an excellent source of fiber. Also, it provides carbohydrates, fats, proteins, and a wide range of vitamins and minerals.
Chicken fat
A source of linoleic acid; a vital omega-6 fatty acid. A mixture of tocopherols has been used to preserve the chicken fat, chief among them being Vitamin E.
Pea protein
This product is derived by removing the starchy part of the pea. It provides a sizeable amount of protein. Some people see this as unnecessary plant protein which is lower in biological value when compared to plant protein
Sunflower oil
Also preserved with mixed tocopherols. While sunflower does not contain omega-3, it is an excellent source of omega-6 and will provide a hydrating factor, making your dog’s fur smooth and shinier.
Whole flaxseed
This is a fantastic source of Omega-3 fatty acids as well as dietary fiber. Also packed with a significant amount of proteins, B vitamins, and several minerals.
Dried plain beet pulp
The inclusion of this ingredient in the Nutro Ultra Large Breed Dry Puppy Food has been received with mixed reactions. Some claim that beet pulp is beneficial in digestion and regulation of blood sugar in your pet. However, the opponents do not see any nutritional value in the beet pulp and term it as a cheap and unnecessary filler
Fish oil
A good source of omega-3 fatty acids
Potassium chloride and choline chloride
They provide potassium supplement and Vitamin B4, respectively.
These are the ingredients that have been compiled to derive this premium food dog. From the analysis, you can tell that the Nutro Ultra Large obtains most of its proteins from animal-based products. This is great because animal-based proteins contain all the necessary amino acids that your dog needs for proper growth and development.

With such a mix of good and healthy ingredients, I feel like he doesn’t get as tired of the food as he has in the past and I know that I’m feeding him good stuff for a growing dog! Nutro vs Taste of the Wild
https://www.centralparkpaws.net/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/51oQ0Wz84iL.jpg The other day when I went to my local pet store to pick up food for the pups, I was horrified to see that they were all out of the brand I usually buy for my dogs.
Because I had a crazy week. I had completely run out, and there was no way I was going home empty-handed to four hungry dogs.
That’s a recipe for disaster!
I narrowed down my choices to Nutro and Taste of the Wild. Both of which are foods I hadn’t fed to my dogs in the past, so wasn’t sure about the quality or if my dogs would even consider eating either of them.
As I stood there debating, I opted to Google the two brands and see what I could find and hoping something online would help me decide between the two foods.
Because I wasn’t able to do as much research as I would have liked, I ended up purchasing a brand I’ve used in the past, but I was still curious about the two brands for the future.
After returning home, I sat down and did a more in-depth investigation of the two companies. I like to read about a company’s history, recalls, and customer reviews.
Here’s what I learned.
Nutro Company History
Nutro was founded by Herben Serois on the 1st of September in 1931, in Santa Monica, California[1].
Nutro started out offering dog, cat, and fox food to the pet food industry.
In 1942 Mr. Serois died at the age of 63.
In 1947 Mr. John Saleen purchased the company, which was family owned and operated until 1975[2].
In 1975 Nutro was purchased by multiple people, Ed Brown and Dave Traitel, plus silent partners[3].
Between 1975 and 2005 Mr. Brown bought out all of his partners and became the sole owner until 2005.
Bain & Associates bought the company in 2005 but only held onto it until 2007.
Finally, in 2007, Mars Incorporated purchased Nutro, making it once again a family owned pet food company[4].
This isn’t the first time we’ve compared Nutro with another dog food brand. How did it fare against Blue Buffalo?
Nutro Dog Food Lines
Nutro offers unique formulas within each food line for specific life stages, different size classifications, and weight management.
The five types of foods are:
Wholesome Essentials
Ultra
Grain Free
Limited Ingredient Diet
Max
Nutro 3 Best Selling Dry Dog Foods
Wholesome Essentials Natural Adult Chicken, Brown Rice & Sweet Potato
Max Natural Adult with Farm Raised Chicken
Wholesome Essentials Adult Lamb and Rice
Taste of the Wild Company History
Diamond Pet Company owns TotW, which is just one of eleven brands they own.
Diamond Pet was originally founded in 1970 by two brothers-in-law and has grown into one of the fastest expanding pet food companies in the world[5].
TotW has been a family operated and owned company from the very beginning.
TotW manufactures food in the United States, in five individual processing plants coast to coast.
One thing to note is that TotW purchases some of their ingredients from outside of the US. However, a great thing about TotW is that the ingredients used in their food are both sustainable and humanely raised.
The inspiration behind their food is that the founders wanted to manufacture “…a high-quality, yet affordable pet food option.”[6]
The recipes for their dog foods were created based on a dog’s ancestral dietary needs.
Taste of the Wild Varieties
Taste of the Wild has nine individual dry dog food recipes, including distinct blends for puppies and small breeds.
Taste of the Wild 3 Best Selling Dry Dog Foods
Grain Free High Prairie Adult – Roasted Bison and Venison
Grain Free Pacific Stream Adult – Smoked Salmon
Grain Free Sierra Mountain – Roasted Duck
Taste of the Wild has gone up against several other brands. How did it fare against Fromm? Or Orijen?
Nutro Recalls
Nutro has only had one recall in the last year involving their dog food products.
The recall was issued in September of 2009 when they found plastic on their production line[7].
The following is a list of foods involved:
Nutro Ultra Puppy
Nutro Natural Choice Chicken Meal Rice
Oatmeal Formula Small Bites Puppy
Fortunately, since the 2009 recall due to plastic, there has not been another recall for their dry dog food.
Taste of the Wild Recalls
Diamond Pet Food has had multiple recalls.
However, TotW has only had the one recall, which happened in May of 2012[8].
Salmonella contamination was the culprit for the recall, which affected their South Carolina plant. Only the dry food recipes were part of the recall.
The various recipes included in the recall were not listed individually, but dry dog food labels reflecting manufacturing codes with a 2 or 3 in the 9th position and an X in the next character were involved in the recall.
The actions taken by TotW to prevent future recalls have been effective in preventing any further dog food recalls.
Taste of the Wild Lawsuits
It is noteworthy to state that there are two ongoing lawsuits filed against Diamond Pet Food that are focused on Taste of the Wild.
The first suit filed against TotW in August of 2018 accusing TotW of food contamination consisted of the following three foods:
Grain-Free High Prairie Canine Formula Roasted Bison and Roasted Venison Dry Dog Food
Grain-Free Pacific Stream Canine Formula Smoked Salmon Dry Dog Food
Prairie Puppy Formula Grain-Free.
The suit asserts the dog foods involved are contaminated with pesticides, heavy metal (Arsenic, lead, mercury, and cadmium), acrylamide, and BPA.
The other lawsuit filed in February of 2019 claims the same contamination issues like the one recorded in 2018.
The five recipes included in this lawsuit are:
Grain-Free High Prairie Canine Formula Roasted Bison and Roasted Venison Dry Dog Food
Grain Free Pacific Stream Canine Formula Smoked Salmon Dry Dog Food
Prairie Puppy Formula Grain-Free
Southwest Canyon with Beef in Gravy
Southwest Canyon with Wild Boar
What’s Important When Choosing a Dog Food?
We all know that ingredients are an essential part of deciding which dog food would be the best one for our dog, but there are many other factors that affect our buying decision.
There are two main categories that help us decide on the which dog food would be ultimate match for our dogs.
The 1st category covers the chief elements that relate to our dog’s unique dietary requirements.  The 2nd category covers the peripheral aspects that don’t directly impact our dog.
Primary Elements
Health – GI issues such as chronic pancreatitis or irritable bowel disease, Heart or Kidney Disease, Allergies, and so on
Size
Age
Weight
Energy Level
Secondary Elements
Dog Food Company’s reputation
Where the ingredients are sourced
Price
Availability
Ingredients
Where the food is manufactured
Comparison of Nutro VS Taste of the Wild
 Ingredients
  Winner: Nutro
Nutro’s extensive variety of food lines, making them the winner.
Because Nutro offers both grain free and non-grain free options, it puts them ahead of TotW in the ingredient category.
In addition to the different grain options, they also have a variety of proteins, both common like chicken and unique like venison.
Also, Nutro’s dry dog foods are all comprised of non-GMO ingredients and are free from wheat and corn.
TotW is an entirely grain-free diet.
As a grain alternative, they have a mix of potatoes and lentils (both sweet and non-specified). Also, they use alternative flours like potato and pea flour instead of the more traditional wheat or rice flours.
The first few ingredients in the top-selling foods are high-quality proteins.
In regards to the rest of the ingredients, there is a diverse selection of fruits and vegetables; however, since the food is protein focused, it is a bit on the lighter side.
Price/Value
  Winner: Nutro
Nutro’s dry dog food averages just over a dollar fifty per pound where as TotW averages almost two dollars per pound.
It’s a small difference, but it adds up over time, especially if you have multiple dogs.
Availability
  Winner: Taste of the Wild
Taste of the Wild can be found almost anywhere: grocery stores, pet stores, dog daycares, and even some hardware stores.
Nutro’s website only shows large chain stores like Pet Smart, Target, and WalMart.
Both brands are available online at most of the same places.
You can find Nutro on both Amazon and Chewy.
Similarly, Taste of the Wild is also available at both Amazon and Chewy.
Taste
  Winner: Taste of the Wild
TotW came out on top for taste. Because the food is protein focused, the dogs seem to gravitate to this brand.
The X Factor
  Winner: Nutro
Nutro won the X Factor because of the varieties.
Not only do they have multiple food lines, but within the food lines, they have very specialized food formulas for different breeds and ages.
For example, they have large breed puppy formulas, small breed senior formulas, and numerous other unique combinations within each of their five different food lines.
Overall Winner
  Winner: Taste of the Wild
Taste of the Wild is the overall winner; the dogs preferred TotW, it’s still economical, and it’s more readily available.
 Conclusion
Both dog food brands are great choices.
However, if you’re still on the fence about the food, have your dog try both and let your dog make the decision.
Most pet stores will allow you to return an open bag of dog food if there is at least 50% of food left in the bag.

Taste of the Wild vs Blue Buffalo
https://www.centralparkpaws.net/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/517Di5wcTWL.jpg Taste of the Wild (TotW) versus Blue Buffalo. Which will prove to be the better dry dog food?
In our family of canines, we have various dietary needs and picky eaters.
Researching and comparing the different diets is the only way for us to figure out the most suitable fit for our family.
Deciding on the best dog food can be a difficult task.
Nutrition is an integral part of our dog’s health, we always want to make sure we are picking the right food, and with the vast selection of food available, it can be quite a daunting task.
What to Consider When Choosing the Right Dog Food
Age (Senior dogs need different food from puppies)
Size
Weight
Energy level
Health – Heart or kidney disease, GI issues such as chronic pancreatitis or irritable bowel disease, allergies, and so on
Many components have to come together in a single dry dog food to satisfy your dog’s many needs.
Also, the endless variables of grain-free, chicken-free, soy-free, etc. sometimes seems to complicate the decision even more.
All of these factors is why deciding on the right dog food is challenging.
Taste of the Wild
Taste of the Wild is one of the most well-known high-protein dog foods, but is it the best?
If you’re curious as to how it stacks up against other dog food brands, we’ve also compared it with Fromm and Orijen.
Taste of the Wild Company History
TotW is one of eleven brands owned by the Diamond Pet Company.
Diamond Pet started in 1970 by a couple of brothers-in-law and has since become one of the most rapidly expanding pet food companies worldwide. TotW has been a family run business from the very start.
TotW produces food in the United States, in 5 different manufacturing locations coast to coast. However, TotW purchases a few of the ingredients from overseas.
A nice thing about TotW is that they only use ingredients that are sustainable and humanely raised.
The concept of their food is that TotW manufactures “…a high-quality, yet affordable pet food option.”
The formulas for their dog food were created based on a dog’s ancestral dietary requirements.
Taste of the Wild Varieties
Taste of the Wild has nine unique dog food varieties, including specific blends for small breeds and puppies.
Taste of the Wild’s 3 Best Sellers
High Prairie
Pacific Stream
Sierra Mountain
Blue Buffalo
Blue Buffalo Company History
An Airedale named Blue was the inspiration behind Blue Buffalo.
Bill Bishop founded the company in 2003.
Blue Buffalo started as a small family run business but in 2018, that all changed when General Mills purchased the company.
Blue Buffalo Varieties
Blue Buffalo has five different dry dog food lines:
Blue Life Protection
The Life Protection line includes 23 varieties with unique formulas for puppies, adults, seniors, breed size, and weight management. The Blue Life Protection lines are “formulated for the health and well-being” of dogs.
Freedom Grain-Free
This grain-free line consists of 12 food choices ranging from puppies to seniors and a couple specific to breed sizes.
Basics Limited
This line has 13 recipes. These foods are limited ingredient formulas for dogs with food sensitivities.
They have specific blends for weight management, puppies, adults, and seniors.
Plus, they have foods based on breed size as well.
Blue Wilderness
Like the other lines, this one has unique formulas for age and size.
This line was “Inspired by the diet of wolves, true omnivores whose endurance is legendary.”
This is a grain-free, high-protein option, one of the dog feeds best for German Shepherds.
Blue Natural Veterinary Diet
Normally only vet clinics are allowed to sell this line of dog food, though you can buy it online if you have a prescription..
Blue Buffalo 3 Best Sellers of Dry Dog Food:
Life Protection Formula Natural Adult
Life Protection Formula Natural Adult Small Breed
Wilderness with Chicken
Recalls and Lawsuits
Like many products relating to health and safety, dog food is subject to recalls to make sure bad food isn’t eaten by your pet.
Taste of the Wild Recalls
While Diamond Pet Food has had several recalls, Taste of the Wild only has had one, which occurred in May of 2012.
The recall was due to salmonella contamination in their South Carolina facility. It was only the dry food formulas involved in this recall.
The varieties of TotW involved were not listed, but all dry dog food with production codes containing a 2 or 3 in the 9th position and an X in the next character position were recalled.
The preventative measures taken by TotW have been successful in avoiding any further dog food recalls.
It is worth noting that there are two ongoing lawsuits filed against Diamond Pet Food that impact Taste of the Wild.
The first lawsuit was filed in August of 2018 and stated specific varieties of food are contaminated. The three foods involved are:
Allegations are just that: allegations. They’re not evidence of wrongdoing.
Taste of the Wild Grain-Free High Prairie Canine Formula Roasted Bison and Roasted Venison Dry Dog Food
Taste of the Wild Grain-Free Pacific Stream Canine Formula Smoked Salmon Dry Dog Food
Taste of the Wild Prairie Puppy Formula Grain-Free.
The lawsuit is asserting that the foods are contaminated with pesticides, heavy metal (arsenic, lead, mercury, and cadmium), acrylamide, and BPA.
The other lawsuit submitted was in February of 2019. The lawsuit is for identical claims of contamination to the suit filed in 2018.
The five formulas included in this lawsuit are:
Taste of the Wild Grain-Free High Prairie Canine Formula Roasted Bison and Roasted Venison Dry Dog Food
Taste of the Wild Grain Free Pacific Stream Canine Formula Smoked Salmon Dry Dog Food
Taste of the Wild Prairie Puppy Formula Grain-Free
Taste of the Wild Southwest Canyon with Beef in Gravy
Taste of the Wild Southwest Canyon with Wild Boar
Blue Buffalo Recalls
Blue Buffalo has had seven recalls related to dog products:

February 2017
Blue Buffalo Homestyle Recipe Healthy Weight, Chicken Dinner with Garden Vegetables, 12.5 ounce can, was recalled due to possible aluminum contamination.

What’s Important When Choosing a Dog Food?
This beagle would like to argue that taste is the most important consideration of all
As I mentioned earlier, your dog’s health issues and preferences are significant factors in deciding on the best food for your canine, but other things also need to be considered as well, such as:
Price
Availability
Ingredients
Dog food company’s reputation
Where the ingredients are sourced
Where the food is manufactured
Comparison of Taste of the Wild vs. Blue Buffalo
Ingredients
  Winner: Blue Buffalo
The two companies have similar ingredients, such as blueberries, chicken, and probiotics, but Blue Buffalo has more vegetables and superfoods.
Also, it is lower in fat and higher in fiber, omega-6, and omega-3 fatty acids.
Another reason why Blue Buffalo won for ingredients was because of they have foods with and without grains, so you can choose the food that works best for your dog’s dietary needs.
Taste of the Wild
TotW is entirely grain-free.
In place of grains, they have a mix of lentils and potatoes (including sweet potatoes).
They also use potato and pea flour to replace more traditional flours.
The first couple of ingredients in each of the top sellers is high-quality proteins.
As for the rest of the ingredients, there are a variety of fruits and vegetables, but being that the food is protein focused, it is a bit on the lighter side.
Blue Buffalo
The example ingredients are from the Wilderness line of dry dog food, which is Blue Buffalo’s most similar line to Taste of the Wild.
Blue Buffalo offers a wide variety of proteins, grains, vegetables, and fruits.
But, most of all, between their different dog food lines you can meet almost any dog’s needs.
Price/Value
  Winner: Taste of the Wild
When comparing Blue Buffalo’s high protein line, Blue Wilderness, TotW was less expensive.
Blue Buffalo’s Wilderness line averages over $2 per pound whereas TotW averages under $2 per pound.
As usual, TotW won when it comes to pricing, and it is hard to beat the price and value you receive when buying TotW.
Availability
  Winner: Taste of the Wild
Taste of the Wild only won by a hair.
Blue Buffalo can be found in almost all large pet stores, some boutique stores (but only select lines), some large hardware stores and grocery store chains.
TotW can be found in most of those locations plus doggy daycares and even high-end grocery stores.
Their online availability is pretty much the same.
Taste
  Winner: Taste of the Wild
This was pretty easy; my dogs didn’t care for the LifeSource bits.
Blue LifeSource Bits are a precise blend of antioxidants, vitamins and minerals, but that’s only good if the dogs will eat them.
The X Factor
  Winner: Blue Buffalo
Blue Buffalo won by a landslide!  Blue Buffalo is involved in 4 community programs.
Pet Cancer Awareness
Sierra Delta Service Dogs for Heroes
Canine Cancer Genome Project
Shelter Stars/Home 4 the Holidays
Overall
  Winner: Blue Buffalo
Blue Buffalo can be found in most places. Though price-wise the protein-focused brand came in higher than ToTW, other dog food lines are less expensive per pound than ToTW.
The number one reason they came out the winner is because of the wide selection of food options.  They have food for so many different needs:
Puppies
Adults
Seniors
Weight management
High protein
Prescription foods
Limited ingredient foods for allergic dogs
Large and small breed varieties
Conclusion
Both TotW and Blue Buffalo are excellent dog food brands, so you really can’t go wrong with either food.
If you’re still on the fence about the food, don’t forget to consider things like availability, company reputation, and ingredient sourcing.

The 12 Best Dog Foods for Senior Dogs
https://www.centralparkpaws.net/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/51izILC44nL.jpg
Our Pick: Solid Gold Young at Heart
Out of the dozen dry dog foods on this list, Solid Gold’s Young at Heart is the best at keeping the widest array of senior pups active and healthy.
It has good ingredients, is easy to digest, low in allergens, and won’t drain your bank account!
However, your senior dog may have different dietary requirements than most, so keep reading to find a dog food that may be better for your dog.
Check Price
Senior Diet
I know everyone talks about the puppy life stage being the most challenging, with the chewing and the housetraining.
But I would have to disagree: I think the senior life stage is by far the most difficult.
Three of our four dogs are chronological seniors, and keeping them happy and healthy can be quite a challenge.
As our dog ages, we’ve been faced with some of the common health issues associated with age, such as arthritis, dementia, loss of muscle mass, and loss of appetite.
One of the components we control to help promote good health in our dogs is their diet. Nutrition is one of the most significant factors in a dog’s overall health. The food we give them we can positively impact their immune system, increase their energy level, foster better cognitive function, and strengthen muscles and bones.
Unfortunately, there isn’t a magical dog food for all seniors.
Some older dogs suffer from being overweight while others are underweight. Some have heart or kidney issues, arthritis, or show no signs of aging at all.
Saying age is just a number couldn’t be more accurate than when talking about dogs.
Sophie, my 13.5 y/o, maintains a perfect weight, is still high energy, doesn’t suffer from heart or kidney disease, and has no signs of arthritis. For her, we’ve made no changes from her hypoallergenic diet. If it’s not broke, don’t fix it!
Calvin, 11 y/o, and Daisy, 15 y/o, both suffer from being underweight and have become extremely picky eaters. Also, Daisy suffers from arthritis, Calvin suffers from irritable bowel disease, and they both suffer from muscle loss.
So, what does this mean for us?
That we couldn’t be more thankful for the wide variety of senior dog foods out there.
Dozens of senior dog foods went through our tests to bring you the best senior dog foods we can find. What you’ll find below is the dozen best-of-the-best, and each one is best at something!
When to Switch to Senior Dog Food
There are several factors to consider before switching your dog to a senior diet, and their chronological age is one of the least important on the list.
What it all really boils down to is the health of your dog.
Some of the signs it might be time to change your dog’s diet to a senior diet are:
The state of their coat and skin – Often times as a dog ages their coat and skin become drier, losing its luster and shine.
Their activity level decreases
Signs of stiffness or soreness when walking or standing
Changes in their weight – Either overweight or underweight
Changes in their eating habits
Cognitive changes
After discussing with your vet and ruling out any underlying health issues, they’ll likely suggest a senior diet.
Food specially formulated for seniors help ensure your dog is receiving the proper dietary requirements needed to live the healthiest life possible
Things to Take into Consideration When Choosing A Dog Food
Every dog is different and some have particular needs, so it’s important to know what you’re looking for before you hit the store.
Is your dog already on supplements?
If so, some foods already contain supplements.
Some supplements and vitamins are pretty benign at higher doses, whereas others can cause GI upset or, in cases like vitamin D, can be dangerous to your dog’s health.
So, it’s wise to double check doses before purchasing a supplement-rich food.
Does your dog have specific ailments or predispositions to certain diseases?
…such as heart disease. If so, you would likely want to consider a diet avoiding grain-free dog food.
Do you have a small or large breed dog?
Just like when they were puppies, there are unique formulas for dogs of different sizes.
There are even dog foods designed for specific dog breeds, such as German Shepherds.
Is your dog needing to gain weight?
If the answer is yes, you would want to look for a higher fat and protein diet.
Is your dog a picky eater?
Then you would want to talk to the folks at the store to find a food that is more robust in flavor or even make your own.
Want some handmade food for your picky dog but are too busy to make it yourself? NomNomNow has you covered!
How is Senior Dog Food Different?
As dogs age, their dietary needs changes as well.
Some of the senior dog foods have:
Lower calories due to the decrease in activity and obesity, one of the most significant contributors to poor health in seniors. Obesity increases risks for things like heart disease, diabetes, osteoarthritis, and high blood pressure.
An increase in protein to help maintain muscle. “Senior diets should have increased protein-to-calorie ratio, providing a minimum of 25 percent of calories from protein,” according to Caroline Coile, Ph.D.
An increase in fiber to help maintain a healthy GI system. Keep in mind that a diet too high in fiber can also cause issues. An excess can decrease “how much protein and other nutrients your pet can absorb from their food,” according to Lisa M. Freeman, DVM, PhD, DACVN.
An increase in much-needed antioxidants, DHA, & EPA, all of which can help boost the immune system, aid in mobility, and combat cognitive dysfunction.
What to Look for and What to Avoid in Senior Dog Foods
Although all dogs need different things, there are a few ingredients any quality senior dog food should have (or not!).
Proper Protein Quality and Quantity – Look For
The protein source, meaning chicken, beef, etc., isn’t as important as the quantity or the quality.
Also, look at the product name.
If the name contains the protein type (i.e. beef or chicken), then it has a higher content. If it lists it as a protein flavor (i.e. lamb flavor), the protein content will be much lower.
All Life Stages – Avoid
“All life stages” really means “most life stages”
Steer clear of this one.
If the dog food label states “all life stages,” it indicates that the food was formulated or tested for growth and is more geared toward younger dogs.
Super Foods and Antioxidants – Look For
Super foods like blueberries, kale, kelp, cranberries, and spinach are ingredients rich in antioxidants.
These foods help boost immune systems and can fight the free radicals that contribute to cognitive decline.
Fiber – Look For
Good fibers can hep your pet maintain a healthy gut.
The best sources for fiber in dog food come from fruits and vegetables, flaxseed, psyllium husk, oats, and barley.
Glucosamine and Chondroitin – Look For
Many of the senior dog formulas have added glucosamine and chondroitin to the food to promote good joint health.
Some dog food companies are adding these to the “Crude Analysis” section, but if it isn’t there, you can check the ingredients list.
Omega-3 & 6 Fatty Acids – Look For
Fatty acids are essential to a dog’s overall health, so be sure that the food contains Fatty acids.
Low Glycemic Foods – Maybe Look For
Depending on your dogs needs, looking for foods that contain low glycemic ingredients, like sweet potatoes or brown rice, will aid in preventing blood sugar spikes and also provide a steadier source of energy.

Our Picks and Best Brands for Specific Needs
Best for Small Dog Breeds
It’s a tie between Royal Canin Small Indoor Senior and Nutro Ultra Senior.
You wouldn’t go wrong with either brand, but if you have a more active small senior dog, then the Nutro brand might be the better pick.
Best for Large Breed Dogs
Bonus Pick: IAMS Proactive Health Mature Adult didn’t make our list, but many pet parents have reported that this food relieves flatulence in old, gassy dogs!
Obviously I’m going with Hill’s Science Diet Healthy Mobility, Large Breed Adult since it’s the only formula for large senior dogs. But, even if it weren’t this one would be hard to compete with.
The nutritionists working on this formula really put a lot of effort into ensuring a strong focus on joint and mobility health, both of which can be issues for large breeds, especially as they age.
Best for Arthritic Dogs
This one was a more difficult pick.
I am a believer in grains in dog food, especially since Daisy has heart disease, but I still choose CANIDAE Grain-Free PURE Senior. It has the highest levels of chondroitin and glucosamine.
Also, it has good levels of fatty acids, which also aid in joint health and mobility.
Best for Underweight Dogs
Because of the high protein content and vitamin and nutrient dense ingredients, I would say the Orijen Senior dry dog food.
It’s packed with healthy proteins and fatty acids, both of which are great for dogs needing to put on a few extra pounds.
Best for Overweight Dogs
This one was also a tie, between Blue Buffalo Life Protection Formula Natural Senior and Solid Gold Young at Heart.
Blue Buffalo has a lower fat content but still maintains a higher fiber content, which can help shed the pounds.
Solid Gold has a high protein level, lower fat content, and a higher fiber content, all of which are needed when trying to drop some weight.
Conclusion
I know there’s a ton of different dog food options and some may even seem very similar.
However, speaking from experience a dog’s sense of taste can be very particular and though they may not like one chicken recipe that doesn’t necessarily mean they won’t like another variety.
All of our seniors are special and unique in their own way, and each of them deserves the perfect quality food that will aid in keeping them healthy happy dogs because really that’s all any of us really wants.

How to Help Your Dog Gain Weight (Safely!)
https://www.centralparkpaws.net/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/how-to-tell-if-unhealthy-underweight-emaciated-dog-stray-signs-symptoms.jpg Although most pet parents struggle with overweight dogs, there are a few of us out there with the opposite issue.
Daisy, my oldest, is one of the few that struggle with an underweight issue. He’s my picky eater and, combined with high energy, he’s sporting the starved dog look.
Okay, maybe it’s not as bad as that, but too many ribs are showing.
Before I changed Daisy’s diet and routine, I discussed her weight with my vet. I wanted to make sure there weren’t any underlying issues and, thankfully, he was perfectly healthy, just a bit underweight.
There are many reasons why your dog might be underweight so, as I did, it’s always good to check with your vet first.
How to Tell If Your Dog Is Underweight
Photo by Ivan Bandura (CC BY 2.0)
Just like humans, your dog’s weight isn’t only about the number on the scale.
Every dog is different, with different muscle mass or bone structure.
It is recommended you look at your dog from above to see if your dog’s weight is where it should be. Here is a PDF with a chart from WSAVA (World Small Animal Veterinary Association) that can help determine whether your dog is underweight or not.
The AVMA (American Veterinary Medical Association) has a similar chart, too.
Generally, if you can see rib bones, there’s no belly, or your dog has bony hips, your dog is underweight or even emaciated.
Why Would You Want to Fatten Up Your Dog?
Here are some reasons why your dog may be underweight:
Health Issues – Worms (Super Gross, but not that uncommon), cancer, diabetes, liver or heart disease, irritable bowel disease. Really, the list goes on. The important thing is to get any medical issue addressed first, then fix the weight issue.
No, we don’t want to fatten you up to eat you…
High Energy & High Metabolism – We all have that friend with the hummingbird energy and metabolism. Well, dogs are like people in that they can have higher metabolisms too.
Stray/Rescue – A friend of mine who rescues sees underweight dogs all the time. Many dogs that are in need of rescuing come into foster care quite malnourished.
Quality of Food – Not all dog food is created equal. Some dog foods don’t absorb well into a dog’s system. This can cause underweight issues due to not getting enough nutrients or not able to build muscle mass.
Seasonal Activity – Here in the Midwest, my dogs don’t always get outside as much as they would like to in the winter. However, when summer rolls around and they are more active, they often lose weight, sometimes to the point of needing to boost their caloric intake.
What to Feed Your Dog (And What Not To):
Here are some Do’s and Don’ts of what to feed your dog:
Do feed high-quality dog food. It’s recommended that dry food be 30% protein and 20% fat (You can find this on the dog food labels)
Do supplement your dog’s food with healthy proteins like chicken, eggs, or cottage cheese
Do include foods rich in omega-6 and omega-3 like salmon, eggs, and chia seeds
Do feed the right dog food for your dog’s activity level. There are dog foods out there specifically formulated for sporting breeds or working breeds. The labels will state things like high performance or sport performance. Some great options are:
Royal Canin Sporting Life Trail 4300
Diamond Naturals Extreme Athlete Adult
Canidae Grain Free Pure Ancestral Fish Formula
Fromm Gold Holistic Dog Food
Don’t feed high-fat foods to your dog as it can cause serious health issues like pancreatitis
Don’t change their diet abruptly. Make sure the changes you do are gradual. Abrupt changes in a dog’s diet can cause serious GI upset.
Don’t feed too much protein as it can cause kidney issues.
Curious about other foods your dog should or shouldn’t eat? We have you covered!
What Else Can You Do to Help Your Dog Gain Weight?
Rehab
If your dog has been ill or had an injury, she may have lost muscle mass.
To help your dog regain muscle, try bringing your dog to rehab. If you contact your local vet, they will be able to recommend a great rehab center.
We’ve used the one at the local university for Amber.
Amber was diagnosed with Irritable Bowel Disease and had lost a lot of weight and muscle. Once Amber was healthy enough, we started her on a rehab schedule to help her regain muscle and it really made a huge difference.
Feed More Frequently
If you only feed once a day it is recommended you try and space out meals throughout the day instead.
If we spread their meals out, our dogs will be able to consume more food.
Try Jazzing Up the Food
You can use bone broth to jazz up your soups and stews, too!
If you have a picky eater try…
Adding canned foods to make it more appealing
A different dry food. Not all dogs like the same food. Remember, if you are changing your dog’s food, do it gradually. In fact, it’s actually recommended to change your dog’s food every 3 months.
Adding bone broth. Bone broth is sold in most local pet and grocery stores. Just remember to follow the feeding guidelines. Too much of a good thing can actually cause problems. Also, it is believed that consuming bone broth can have other health benefits.
Curious about bone broth or want to try making your own jazzy and tasty dog food at home? Check this out!
What If Your Puppy Isn’t Gaining Weight?
Puppies not gaining weight is definitely a situation that you want to see your vet about ASAP.
If your puppy is perfectly healthy then it’s likely the food its eating isn’t the right formula for them. There are several puppy dog foods out there, so be sure to pick the right one for your dog’s breed.
Photo by Lucignolobrescia (CC BY-SA 3.0)
If you’re wondering if there is, say, a Golden Retriever puppy food, not specifically. But, there are puppy foods specifically formulated for large breed dogs.
According to a personal interview with Dr. Julie Churchill, DVM, PhD, Diplomate ACVN, the nutritionist at the University of Minnesota, she always recommends consulting with your vet to receive specific dietary recommendations.
She states, “A new rescue who is underweight will likely have a different nutritional need than a high energy dog, who will also have a different nutritional need than a selective eater.”
So, in conclusion, though no one wants a chunky monkey it’s not good to have a dog too slim either.
If you have a dog that’s underweight, there’s a lot of different ways you can help them get back to where they should be.
