Hi, I recently have started wanting to get into fountain pens a bit. I was wondering if you have come across a dark/midnight navy ink that you liked? Thanks!
First of all, I am so excited for you!!! My personal favorite dark blue ink is Oxford Blue by Diamine. It’s affordable and the red sheen on it is amazing!! It was the ink that got me more interested in inks rather than just pens themselves. 💙
You can get it at most pen retailers and on Amazon. Diamine in general has a really good and affordable color variety and the inks tend to behave nicely.

Diamine Midnight on Fabriano paper
Quote: “Saying ‘I notice you’re a nerd’ is like saying ‘Hey, I notice that you’d rather be intelligent than be stupid, that you’d rather be thoughtful than be vapid, that you believe that there are things that matter more than the arrest record of Lindsay Lohan. Why is that?’ In fact, it seems to me that most contemporary insults are pretty lame. Even ‘lame’ is kind of lame. Saying ‘You’re lame’ is like saying ‘You walk with a limp.’ Yeah, whatever, so does 50 Cent, and he’s done all right for himself.” - John Green

[Image ID 1: A sheet of Tomoe river paper with two ink swatches done vertically, with a pen under each swatch and a label for the ink swatch and the pen. The first of the swatches is Diamine Inkvent Midnight Hour, and then the pen under it is the Sheaffer 100 Friends of Winter (Pine) fountain pen, with a  medium nib. Midnight Hour is a dark blue-black sheening and the swatch is still a little wet. The Friends of Winter Pine is a slender, rounded pen with a silver clip on the top. It is black in color, and there are stylized white pine branches across the barrel and cap. The trim is chrome. The second swatch is Kala Inks Neon Foxy Pink and the pen is a Kaweco skyline sport, in hot pink with a medium nib.  Foxy is a violently bright pink. The Kaweco sport is a much shorter pen than the Sheaffer, since it’s capped. The cap is octagonal and about a fingerlength long, and the barrel looks comically short, but when it’s uncapped and posted it’s very comfortable to write with. The color of the pen is a slightly less eye-searing bright pink. /end ID]
[Image ID 1: A sheet of Tomoe river paper with two ink swatches, with a pen under each swatch and a label for the ink swatch and the pen. The first of the swatches is Visconti Souvenir de Mauve, and then the pen under it is a medium nib magenta LAMY. Souvenir de Mauve is less a mauve than a really purply magenta. The LAMY has a barrel with two parallel flat sides and a demonstrator through which you can see the ink level, with a round cap with a silver clip. There are also faintly visible pockmarks at the very end of the barrel, as if it has, perhaps, been chewed on by horrible little cat teeth. It’s about the same color as the ink, but maybe a little more pink. The second swatch is Sailor Manyo Nekoyanagi, and the pen below it is a BENU briolette in luminous orchid. Nekoyanagi is a very light bluish-purple. The ink is a shading ink, so it’s darker in some places and lighter in others, but is still pretty readable. The BENU is a long, skinny, faceted oval shape that looks like a pen-shaped gemstone. The ends of the cap and barrel are lavender in color, and the middle where they meet is black. There is also silver glitter in stripes where the black and lavender meet. The nib on this one is a bold. /end ID]
So I figured I would take some time and document my fountain pen and ink collection. I’ve been playing around with fountain pens since... 2018? Something like that. Definitely long enough that the Diamine Midnight Hour sample came from the original Inkvent Calendar, which my lovely spousewife bought me. Since then I’ve acquired many, many pens, and will definitely be acquiring more in the future, since I have some in the mail as we speak. And I need to fill up this big ole empty blog with something, so I decided to start with this obsession. I have a bunch of pens that I keep inked and write with every day, even if it’s just a few lines in a notebook that I use just for that. Each pen has to have its own designated ink that matches it in color or in vibe. I will admit to being a bit intense about this.
So here’s four pens and their corresponding inks from my collection, with a few notes:
Diamine Inkvent Midnight Hour—This is not one of my forever inks, but it’s nice enough. I love a good sheening ink, and the blue-black color feels nice and official, but just a little fancy.
Sheaffer Friends of Winter (Pine)— This guy is my newest acquisition. I haven’t really bought a ton of black pens, not when there’s a whole rainbow of color out there to get my hands on, but I have an abiding love for trees. So yeah, of course I had to get the tree pen. Eventually I will get over the need to own any pen/ink that I have a positive association with the name of, but probably not before I get the other two Friends of Winter pens (I assume there will be a bamboo pen in addition to the plum that’s already on the market). This is the first Sheaffer I’ve ever bought and I’m really pleased with how it writes. I prefer a slightly lighter pen, but it’s still very comfortable to write with. It writes fairly wet, and while I prefer a broad or double broad nib, the medium works well. It’s not destined to be a favorite pen, but I will keep it in the bigger collection that I keep inked.
Kala Inks Neon Foxy Pink— I really love any ink that makes my eyes hurt if I look at it long enough, and this ink fits that description to a T. I also have the blue from the same line, Neon Dude Blue, but it’s not quite as violently bright. Both were very worthwhile acquisitions.
Kaweco Skyline Sport Pink— It took me forever to buy my first Kaweco but now I keep buying them. I bought this one specifically to go with the Foxy ink, because I wasn’t not going to keep that ink in the regular rotation.
Visconti Souvenir de Mauve— I hear bad things about Visconti’s customer service, so I don’t think I’d drop money on one of their pens, but I ran out of the Pilot Iroshizuku Tsutsuji I was using in my faithful old LAMY and decided to try something new. Perfectly serviceable plain ink in a great, vivid color.
LAMY Safari Magenta— This is one of the pens I’ve had the longest-- when I first got my pens, I wasn’t as careful with them as I could have been, so the end of this one has little tooth marks in it, courtesy of the Terrible Calico. It’s allegedly a medium nib, though it writes a little slenderer than I’d expect. Not an absolute favorite, but an old friend of a pen.
Sailor Manyo Nekoyanagi— I LOVE this ink. The shading from purple to blue is just so delicate and beautiful. Sailor inks have really impressed me, and the Manyo inks I’ve tried are just wonderful. Worth a purchase for sure. It’s still a very light purple but it’s readable.
BENU Briolette Luminous Orchid— BENU’s got a higher entry price point for its pens, so while I wouldn’t necessarily recommend them to anyone just starting out in the hobby, they’re fun to add to an established collection. I have never had a problem with any of mine, and they write with glitter inks really well, even in the fine nib. This one is a bold nib and writes wet. Extremely beautiful for use and display, and this particular color actually glows in the dark!

@Inktober day 30: Catch . I guess I was hopeful, in imagining Zorya Vechernyaya catching a star, bringing good fortune...🌟 . In Slavic mythology, there are two Zorya sisters Zorya Utrennyaya who represents Dawn or morning, and Zorya Vechernyaya who represents Twilight or evening. However, in Neil Gaiman’s (@NeilHimself) American Gods, there are three sisters, the third being Zorya Polunochnaya who represents midnight. 👯‍♀️🌙 . Considering Neil Gaiman’s love for the three Fates (the Parcae I mentioned in Inktober day 20 T(h)read), I’m convinced that the Zorya sisters are also an allegory for them: • Zorya Utrennyaya tells poor lies and can’t quite tell fortune because she just spins the thread of life 🧶🌅 • Zorya Vechernyaya is good at telling fortune because her job is to measure the thread of life 📏🔮 • Zorya Polunochnaya tells no lies because she cuts the thread of life and there is no room for lies in death ✂️💀 . Inks used are: • @platinum.pen Carbon Black • @KWZ.ink El Dorado • @StraitsPen Rosé by the box • @Pelikan_passion Edelstein Tourmaline in my m605 Transparent-White and Amethyst m605 Violet-White • Diamine Eclipse .
