so luke with whistle stims/tics, right? yes. but, they get worse/more frequent with stress (totally not self projecting here)

so spencer and derek start associating his whistle with luke being stressed/having a hard time, and they start whistling little tunes and bits of songs back to him—nothing too long or disruptive, but often songs that luke likes listening to or just generally happy tunes—until he starts picking up on them and whistling them back

and after that, whenever luke starts to get stressed out, he starts whistling the songs and they help him calm down/ground him and remind him to take a step back to breathe

can't believe i don't have a foster kids au yet...

CW: the american foster system, mentioned CSA (derek), underage drug use + drinking

so foster kids derek, spencer, and luke who all get placed in the same area at some point and become friends

spencer gets put into the system first after his dad left and his mom couldn't take care of him, bouncing between homes and never staying in one place for very long because he's a "troubled case"

then it's derek after his dad dies (idk what happens to his mom use your imagination) and, at first, he's the perfect kid, until buford, but since he isn't with his family anymore, he isn't "the man of the house" and feels he needs to be strong and protect his family, so he starts acting out and rebelling until his foster family decides they can't "handle him" anymore

finally is luke (i always hc that his father died in the army, so something around those lines) and he's trying so hard to be strong about everything because that's what he thinks his dad would've wanted, but he's not letting himself grieve and process everything going on in a healthy way

so they all end up in the same area; spencer and derek meet first after derek catches some bullies harassing spencer and almost immediately latch onto each other, and then they meet luke, who's shutting everyone out, and they know what he's going through and emphasize with him, the three of them helping each other navigate a world with the cards stacked against them

they spend a few years together, growing up with each other and experimenting with drugs/alcohol and their sexualities

but spencer gets addicted to getting high, and his foster family sends him away to a group home/rehab that's supposed to help him get sober, and without him around, derek and luke drift, too caught up in their own heads to notice the distance growing between them, and eventually, they disappear from each others' lives

the three of them grow up, and years pass until spencer walks into the bau and sees derek, his the first person to really care about him, childhood best friend, his first crush, and just breaks down in the middle of the bullpen

and after a little bit of getting to know each other again, spencer and derek ask penelope to track luke down and they reconnect with him and everything is good and they're all happy the end (i'm so tired shhhh)

anyways here's what i think traumatized teenagers!moralvez 's panic responses would be

1. spencer - "fawn"

fawn is another part of the fight or flight response (fight, flight, fawn, freeze) that is changing your behavior to appeal to a perceived threat.

spencer's instinct would be to appease who/whatever is the perceived threat by apologizing profusely, making himself as small and insignificant as possible, and being very obedient

2. luke - "flight"

i think luke's defense would mostly depend on the situation, but his base instinct would be flight. when he's by himself, this is more mental, mostly dissociating/detaching himself and "toughing out" the perceived threat. however, unlike "freeze," he is still always looking for a way out but that's his brain's second priority

when he's with someone else who he needs to protect, luke might take more of a fight or fawn role depending on what will buy the other person enough time to get out of the situation

3. derek - "fight"

most of the time, i think derek would be combative. he'd verbally or physically defend himself, by lashing out while he's panicking and not letting anyone close to him.

there are special cases, though, when he freezes, completely shutting down and just. Taking whatever happens, in response to specific triggers

and since it's like the 80s or something (i still don't know how decades work ignore me) they don't consider the idea that they're not all straight, cis, and monogamous until spencer comes out as trans and luke and derek are like "huh. maybe we're not as straight as we thought."

and as the three of them continue to explore their sexualities, luke and derek also realize they're attracted to each other and spencer, simultaneously and are just like "yeah, okay" and they all start dating
