My Deep Rock Galactic Survivor Demo review as of 05.10.23 :)
•Core Gameplay:
Definitely interesting to say the least.
The game description calls it a "reverse bullet hell" and it is not entirely wrong. In this game you cannot aim, hell, you can't even control WHEN you fire your gun or throw a grenade, if an enemy is near, a comically large bullet will come out of your crotch and propel itself towards the nearest Bug.
Your goal here is to go in, mine gold, nitra and other minerals, get XP and kill a "boss" type enemy
The whole deal of the game is "go in, loot, go further down, die and use the resources you got on general upgrades in the main menu" I have no problem with this, except for the fact that the minimap and bonus objectives only get unlocked after at worst two runs.
The resources do stay with you even when you fail tho.
As of the current Demo, the only character available is the scout, and despite being the quick and nimble one, the default move speed is way too slow, and only after around two speed upgrades it becomes bearable. I can't even imagine what classes like Driller or Gunner will feel like.
WEPONS
Scouts wepon selection is also far from brilliant, the current wepons are NOT powerfull enaugh to deal with the enemy crowds and they very obviously lack the AOE that is almost required for hordes at even Haz1, the only decent one due to its piercing is the m1000, and it has a slow fire rate whitch makes it unreliable, most wepons fall off hard by the second mission if you aren't collecting every piece of XP, whitch is hard enaugh because of
the ENEMIES
the game just keeps throwing enemies at you endlessly, and if you just happen to focus on mining or moving, they can pile up very quickly into clumps you straight up cannot kite around, whitch is basically a slow loss, as even when the objective turns to eliminating the big slasher, the enemies keep piling up, and past mission two, it's almost impossible to keep on top of the spawns and since they just keep coming, it's hard to collect the XP you have gotten from your kills.
The enemies at the moment seem to include:
Mactera spitters
Basic grunts
Grunts but red and looking like lobsters?
Glyphid Pretorians
Exploders
(probably some more that I have simply missed)
The enemy selection is good, and if I had to complain about the bugs themselves and not the way they spawn, I would say that the exploders detonate way too fast to escape unless you're already almost out of the range.
the GRAPHICS
the artstyle is visibly different, and it's jarring. My eyes are not ready to see medium poly scout, the bugs themselves look different, like they were squished almost, it's not a major issue in mission, since you don't often pay attention to the small glyphid details while running for your life, but it is visible.
As of the current Demo, there are no graphical options, so no comment can be made on those

It's not a bad demo by any means, but it's far from good and there are definitely many things I would love to see changed in the final release later this year :3

But they're not ONLY for Steam. You can collect them in all builds. Some descriptions are a bit different in game compared to Steam since I'm not sure how well some of the jokes would fly...😂 They also won't be visible in the demo once that is up but once the full game releases anything you collected should pop right in
Also Steam will be showing the list for the DLC I can't separate that, but they aren't visible in the games version... I try to avoid having those glaring DLC lock icons as much as possible xD

ok another headcanon and is from my ultimate comfort favs:
When demo got first hired by pauling he was like very shy and introverted at some point where everyone wasn’t like… that conjoined and besties as how they are now. And i feel like he got a pretty rough time to even start to talk with his teammates or get a tiny friendship with them.
And he often times was very threatened by small lady in glasses that liked to be strict with them in their first day since… it was business only ofc
but by the time when pauling got a bit more soft with them, and got also a bit friendly with demo i feel like at some point he started to develop a tiny crush with her since she was the one who often talks more with, and i have this other hc that also he would fell easily with people that befriends him (not like anyone of course it really does depends the person for him)
so you know pauling it’s nerdy and a bit sensitive (she cries very easily) and she is very friendly or a bit more extrovert if she gets to, but like in a sense where she is more ambivert too. uhhh idk she is just talkative with people if you get her chance where she’s not busy and will tell you to go to hell. rough lady
and he liked that! i think he thought they both shared some stuffs along and can infodump their love for guns and for the work they are in and then if they can go a bit personal with some drinks and he liked that he could share this stuffs with her all chill and cool
but i feel like he just had this side secret crush with her and stopped those want to be romantic feelings because he really saw she is not like, up to those stuffs, she is so focused on work and also stressed and depressed like him and he could just understand that she just only want someone to listen to her but she will not like, pay that much attention about romantic relationships and he could completely understand that once he get to know her more deeply. and he just couldn’t do that to the one who also considered a friend and he probably guessed she will not feel the same for him but that didn’t like hurt him and is not like he ever confessed to her. he just had those secret feelings for her for a time and then realized she was not really like the one for him to be in a relationship
and that’s where i thought of him now having a more soft spot for her and caring her like a sister (not like literally but in a familiar soft spot sense, but that’s ofc his friend)
so yeah idk 👍

What goes into the vertical slice of an MMORPG? I feel that it would be hard to prototype when a lot of the game's premise relies on quest progression, player-to-player interactivity, etc. It seems like something that cannot be communicated effectively until much later in development.
It's good to remember what a vertical slice is - it's a functioning version of all of the systems we plan on having in the game working together so that it is representative of the final game experience. MMORPGs tend to come with a lot of expected table stakes features, which means our vertical slice needs to have those features. For a MMORPG, that generally entails:

At least two distinct players on separate accounts able to log in and play in the same game world
A persistent game world - all players are able to log out and the same game state persists between logins
Functioning gameplay systems - skills, targeting, combat, leveling, crafting, etc.
MOBs that exist within the world independent of players
At least one quest that the players are able to accept, progress, complete, and obtain rewards
A functioning leveling system that allows players to level up and obtain rewards
Functional UI - combat, looting, character inventory, NPC interaction (e.g. quests, cinematic), chat, grouping with other players, etc.
A functioning chat system - player A can type a message and player B can read it in real time
A functioning item storage system (e.g. bank)
A functioning asynchronous mail system - player A can send a mail to player B who can receive it when they next log in.
A functioning player-to-player commerce system (auction house)
Functioning player-to-player direct trading
A functioning gear system

For a vertical slice to be a vertical slice, we don't need all of the different classes or races or gear or systems, but we need at least one of everything working together so that the play experience of the vertical slice is representative of the finished game play experience. Core functionality all has to be there. It can be a little unstable and it can be cobbled together, but everything should be there and it needs to feel like the intended final experience. The purpose of the vertical slice is to persuade the executives that the rest of the game is worth making.

Faces blurred, everything is mixed. (Why are we seeing this? )
A voice is heard before it's fast ending came just like the voice
“oh ... Charlotte Emily! .... Why are you out in the rain...?” The purple shadow asked the girl (Charlotte? ... Charlie? ... If this is going where I think it is....)
“..huh?”Charlottelookedbehindher, asmileonherface. “Uncle Bill!”(....You knew him?)
‘Uncle Bill’ laughed at the silly nickname. But he doesn't really mind — “Do you need help going back in?” he asked with (FAKEFAKEFAKEFAKEFAKEFAKEFAKEFAKEFAKEFAKEFAKE!!!) concern.
Charlotte just nodded, smile still on her face wiping her face (she would be lying if she wasn't crying at least a little bit, it was kinda rude to be locked out, and standing in the rain).
“Here..” Bill said as he outstretched his hand to her. ... Too long of an arm, but Charlotte didn't seem to care (...Don't. please don't.. dontdontdontdontdontdont...you can't).
“I know a short cut, that is away from those rude kids..” Bill said with reassurance.
A long and stuffy corner? Charlotte doesn't know what it's really called (or maybe she does but it was hard to remember it)..
“ooh... Maybe I forgot just how to get there...” Bill said as he suddenly lets go of Charlotte's hand. Well, he is getting older, so that makes sense. Her father's somewhat the same, so she doesn't mind! “Well.. I could always go and get your father.. surely he remembers more than I do!” (SHUT IT.)
That would be nice. She wonders how he's doing actually.. “Can you also ask him how he's doing? ..he doesn't really respond to me, Uncle..”
(........ I knew it........)
A swing. “....Sure, my niece....”
Startled "what are you doing"s and a small scream.

I was under the guise that this was still in demo and I had played through all the content there was to offer so far. Am I wrong and the game has been entirely completed? Did I somehow pick so many unfavorable decisions that it cut out whole scenes? Last time I played, Blades.. 3rd(I think, somewhere around there) 'hangout session' hadn't been written yet. Hi there, I'm not sure when you last played, but the game is definitely not complete yet! However, the alpha build version is up to Chapter 9! I'm guessing it might be worthwhile for you to check out the FAQ, where your question might be answered here:
Who are these characters that everyone talks about on the Tumblr? Why haven't I met them? My game ends at __ point. Is it supposed to go on for longer?
The majority of the questions about the characters are also coming from people who have never met them. Information about the ROs or main characters has been available for some time, so naturally people get curious and send in questions about them!
There are also two versions of the game at the moment: the public demo, which is accessible to everyone, and the alpha build, which has more content but which is currently private. The alpha build can only be accessed by Patrons and testers at the moment, and it's several chapters ahead of the demo, which leads to some overlap in questions (all posts pertaining alpha build content will be tagged with #alpha build). There are no choices that exclude you from meeting characters: they just likely haven't been introduced in the public demo yet.
You can find a list of characters and whether they have been introduced in the public demo or alpha-build-only here.
Hopefully that makes sense! :) And I'll be making walkthroughs on how to romance each character when the game is ready to release!
