Thoughts : Take A Giant Step (1959)
Tumblr media
Digging through the Criterion Collection library is always a wonderful experience, and it’s bolstered by the fact that they offer curated collections on a nearly daily basis.  Recently, a collection of Ruby Dee films popped up, and while investigating, I discovered a film by the name of Take a Giant Step.  What really caught my eye was the fact that, in 1959, the film had an all Black leading cast, an extreme rarity for the time, which made it a fitting choice for my Black History Month docket.
Spence Scott (Johnny Nash) is expelled from school after a History class discussion over the Civil War turns into a standoff between himself and the mostly White class.  After walking out of class, Spence is caught in the restroom smoking a cigar, which ultimately leads to his expulsion.  Frustrated, Spence heads home just in time to see Christine (Ruby Dee), the Scott’s housekeeper, out before his Gram (Estelle Hemsley) comes downstairs to console him.  Spence slips out of the house before his parents, Lem (Frederick O’Neal) and May (Beah Richards) Scott, return home, and with bag in hand, Spence heads out with intentions of taking care of himself.  After a couple of less than ideal encounters, however, Spence returns home to face the music, but things only worsen as tensions rise within the family and issues pile up.
Watching Spence attempt to navigate the educational and social ills he was born into due to his parents’ attempts at bettering themselves stands as a metaphor for the greater struggles that many Black men and women face in the shadow of generations of mistreatment, and the frustration these chains that emerge from the past can cause.  Spence continuously tries to extend bridges to his young friends from other cultures, sometimes in spite of how his Gram feels, but it becomes immediately apparent that Spence does so with a sense of indignation that he is no longer unable to hide by the time he is introduced to us.  The divide between Spence and his parents makes things more difficult because, despite their similar end goals, their journeys could not differ more, but the built in hierarchy of respect that is implied makes communication flow one way.
There are echoes of Long Day’s Journey Into Night in terms of how frank the film is with its subject matter, although Take a Giant Step predates Long Day’s Journey.  While racism and oppression are at the forefront of the story, the film presents unflinching looks at underage drinking, prostitution, infidelity and other social norms that were often swept under the rug at the time.  Even Lem, Spence’s father, opts to handle his missing son on his own rather than involve the police, a sentiment that seems to still stand in the Black community.  Seeing the relationship between Spence and Gram depicted on the screen is one of the earliest presentations of generational connections in the Black community that I can remember, and in turn, it makes the loss of Gram sting for the viewer the same way it does for Spence.  There is no effort made to sugarcoat or dance around death and despair, but the film also smartly chooses not to dwell on these things or wallow in them, staying true to its initial narrative trajectory.
For a film that is nearly 65 years old, the cinematography is surprisingly modern, with a very kinetic camera that allows characters to explore the fullness of the spaces and locations in which the story takes place.  Though based on a play, the film is adapted well enough to break the confines that normally come with this evolution by building a sense of a much bigger world not limited to minimal locations.  While the score is present enough to give viewers emotional cues, it manages to stay out of the way of the monumental performances viewers are blessed with.  All in all, the film is quite technically proficient, but in a way that makes it an overall strong film rather than a story enhanced by bells and whistles, which in turn, gives it a bit of a timeless feel despite its dated look at its subject matter.
At only 19 years old, and with a world of fame yet to unfold for him, Johnny Nash really and truly stepped up to the plate in a role that required him to state some extremely tough truths and observations with the kind of conviction that could put a Black man in danger at the time, and all the while, he still maintains a youthful innocence.  Estelle Hemsley provides the most beautiful wisdom and honesty to Nash’s Spence, as well as infinite amounts of patience in a depiction of some of the most trying times, and a frankness that comes with experience.  Frederick O’Neal embodies the monumental struggle that comes with advancing up the corporate ladder as a Black man, trying his best to be dignified in a cesspool of stress, while Beah Richards finds herself stretched thin by the multi-directional pull that comes with raising and worrying for children in a vengeful society.  Ruby Dee stands as the anomaly of the cast as she straddles the fence between outsider (due to her service role) and confidant (due to her character’s equal sense of isolation to Spence) with effortless grace.  Pauline Meyers, Royce Wallace and Frances Foster bring real world energy to the film with their hustles and struggles, which is offset by Ellen Holly’s attempts to exude joy in the face of personal defeat and acceptance of a less than ideal life.  Appearances by Sherman Raskin, Frank Killmond, Joseph Sonessa, Dell Erickson, Dee Pollack and William Walker fill in the gaps.
Using DOOMonFILM as a way to explore the roots of Black films has been a truly rewarding experience, and it’s directly due to finding films like this.  Take a Giant Step has quite a bit to say about the frustrations that emerge from systematic racism, but even taken out of that framework, it could be celebrated for just how forward-thinking that it is.  Many fans of film who feel that the past was always given a rose-colored tint would be pleasantly surprised to find out that honesty of this level existed in films prior to the 1960’s.

Rob Zombie's 3 From Hell: Release Date, Cast & Story Details
Tumblr media
Rob Zombie is going back to his roots to bring the Firefly family back for the third installment in their series, 3 From Hell. Zombie’s filmmaking career began in 2003 with House of 1000 Corpses, an exploitation horror film that set the basis (both visually and narratively) for the rest of his work. His second film, The Devil’s Rejects, was a sequel and helped build the story and reputation of the Firefly family: a group of psychopaths that enjoy going on killing sprees.
Zombie left the Fireflies aside for years, focusing instead on other films like his versions of the slasher classics Halloween and Halloween II, the supernatural horror film The Lords of Salem, and the carnival horror fest that was 31. Zombie’s films have been very divisive: some praise his style, heavily influenced by horror films from the 1970s, while others find them narratively weak and not offering anything new to the genre. Criticism hasn’t stopped him from making films (and at this point, it will never be an impediment), and he’s coming back with 3 From Hell.
RELATED: Rob Zombie's Halloween Movies Aren't Bad - They're Misunderstood
It feels like this film has been in development for years, although it hasn't been like that: production wrapped in April 2018, and although post-production was delayed due to Zombie’s musical commitments (never forget he’s also a rockstar), the film was finally completed by April 2019. Here are all the details on Zombie’s 3 From Hell.
Tumblr media
Very much like 31, 3 From Hell is getting a very limited release. The film will be released on September 16 and will only screen for three nights in 900 select theaters through Fathom Digital Broadcast Network. Although it’s a very short run, each screening will have bonus content: the first one will include an introduction video from Rob Zombie and the first 50 attendees at each theater will get a free collectible poster. The second day, the screening will include a 30-minute behind-the-scenes featurette, and the last one will be a double feature experience with The Devil’s Rejects.
Tumblr media
3 From Hell brings back the remaining members of the Firefly family and some new faces as well – new to the story, but not to Zombie’s films. Sid Haig, Bill Moseley, and Sheri Moon Zombie are reprising their roles as Captain Spaulding, Otis Driftwood, and Vera-Ellen “Baby” Firefly. Also coming back are Danny Trejo as Rondo and Daniel Roebuck as Morris Green.
The new additions to the cast – and that have taken part in other Zombie films – are Dee Wallace (who played Cynthia Strode in Halloween), Jeff Daniel Phillips (Halloween II, The Lords of Salem, and 31), and Richard Brake (Doom-Head in 31). Other actors joining this blood fest are Bill Oberst Jr, Austin Stoker, Emilio Rivera, Clint Howard, Wade Williams, David Ury, Tom Papa, Dot-Marie Jones, and Richard Edson.
Tumblr media
3 From Hell is a sequel to The Devil’s Rejects, completing the trilogy that began with House of 1000 Corpses. Plot details have been kept under wraps, but the story will follow Captain Spaulding, Otis, and Baby, who somehow survived being shot multiple times at the end of The Devil’s Rejects. The three surviving Firefly family members will spend time in jail, though not much as they will continue with their reign of horror both in prison and outside.
The film will also show all the media attention their shooting and recovery gathered, as well as a cult following, with people campaigning for their release – hence the tag line “Free The Three”.
Tumblr media
In June 2019, Rob Zombie shared a teaser with clips from House of 1000 Corpses and The Devil’s Rejects, and a couple of shots showing Spaulding, Otis, and Baby's return. A full trailer for 3 From Hell was released the following month, and it doesn’t show much about the plot but it includes more footage, such as their arrival to the hospital, where their chances of survival were minimal… but evil never dies. It also shows the aforementioned campaign for their release from prison, as well as the mugshots that have been used as promotional posters. Finally, it gives a quick taste at the type of violence and crimes the Fireflies will commit this time, along with Richard Brake’s character Winslow Foxworth “Foxy” Coltrane.

Rock-A-Doodle finally hits blu-ray!
Rock-A-Doodle finally hits blu-ray!
Chanticleer’s (Glen Campbell, True Grit) a rooster who’s quite literally the cock of the walk. His ability to wake the sun with his morning crow is the envy of all. With one exception. The Grand Duke of Owls (voiced by Christopher Plummer, The Sound of Music) is one very foul fowl. Bent on destroying Chanticleer, the jealous Duke devises a plan so that it appears that the sun can rise on its own…

Rocky Horror Icon Barry Bostwick Takes on Rob Zombie’s Three from Hell
As many of you know well and good by this point in time, writer-director Rob Zombie (Halloween, The Lords of Salem) has an all-new entry in his infamous “Firefly Family” franchise headed our way in early 2019, called Three from Hell. It’s been a whopping thirteen years (holy hell) since we’ve seen these three psycho killers grace the big screen, and Zombie recently teased that they will be joined this time around by a bunch of “bizarre cameos” including Chaz Bono. And today Zombie let us know that he’s added another classic genre actor to the cast with The Rocky Horror Picture Show star Barry Bostwick.
Rob Zombie took to Instagram to announce this new cast member writing:
“Another exciting 3 From Hell cameo! Here I am with the one and only Barry Bostwick! As a huge fan Rocky Horror, it was a blast to have Barry join the cast.”
Barry Bostwick is best known for the role of Brad in The Rocky Horror Picture Show yes, but the man also had a lead role in Michael J Fox’s long-running sitcom Spin City as well as roles in such classic films as Weekend at Bernie’s II, Spy Hard, Hannah Montana: The Movie, and Grand-Daddy Day Care} as Dynamite Dan North. I’m kidding. But seriously, Bostwick has had some quality genre roles in the past few years such as Mr. Abbadon in “The Night Billy Raised Hell”, director Darren Lynn Bousman’s segment from the recent horror anthology Tales of Halloween, and Santa himself in Slay Belles. Good to see Bostwick back in the genre, I say. Keep it going!
Rob Zombie is writing and directing Three From Hell, and he is also producing alongside Mike Elliot. Sid Haig, Bill Moseley, and Sheri Moon Zombie will be back in full force as The Firefly Family, with all three confirmed to be reprising their roles. Zombie shot the movie last year before heading out on tour, and then he let the footage sit and simmer a bit, before jumping into the post-production process earlier this year. Hopefully the movie will be in theaters this fall.

Captain Spaulding, Otis B. Driftwood, and Vera-Ellen “Baby” Firefly were first seen in House of 1000 Corpses. That movie was originally supposed to be released by Universal, and was shot on their backlot. But there were a lot of problems behind the scenes. The studio dropped it, and it was later picked up for distribution by LionsGate only to become a huge cult hit. The Firefly family later returned in the much grittier sequel The Devil’s Rejects, solidifying Zombie as a strong force in the horror movie world.
Danny Trejo will be back this round as Rondo, with Daniel Roebuck starring as Morris Green in this latest gruesome joyride. Other cast members getting down in the dirt this time around include Jeff Daniel Phillips as Warden Virgil Dallas Harper, Richard Brake as Winslow Foxworth Coltrane, Pancho Moler as Sebastian, Bill Oberst Jr. as Tony Commando, and Clint Howard as Mr. Baggy Britches. Other icons have also been announced, and include Dee Wallace reuniting with Zombie after her appearance in The Lords of Salem, along with Wade Williams, Austin Stoker, Emilio Rivera, and David Ury. Comedian Tom Papa is showing up in an unspecified role after Rob Zombie directed one of his comedy specials. Yes, that actually happened. And it was pretty amazing. Especially considering that Tom Papa is one of the few ‘clean’ comedians working today.
House of 1000 Corpses followed a tale of sick and twisted killers and the poor saps who had the unfortunate luck to run into them. That movie even starred Rainn Wilson in a pre-Office appearance that some have forgotten. The movie was a fine mix of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre and Dan Aykroyd’s Nothing But Trouble topped with a White Zombie twist. The Devil’s Rejects picked up the story further down the road, with Otis and Baby on the run and hiding out at a Hotel. They are later joined by Capt. Spaulding for some gruesome fun. The movie ends with the trio going out in a hail of bullets. How will they be resurrected in Three From Hell? We’ll just have to wait and see.
Three From Hell was originally teased as an early 2019 release. But it’s looking more and more like we’ll be treated to this gory treat later in the year, perhaps around Halloween time. There is no release date set yet. Zombie announced Barry Bostwick’s participation himself over on Instagram.
