I’ve seen Palestinians refer to their homeland as Occupied Palestine and “Israel” as the occupation, to better illustrate the settler colonial history of “Israel” and deny it legitimacy. As “America” is also a settler colony, would it be accurate to refer to the so-called “USA” in general as Occupied Turtle Island/the American Occupation or is that terminology specific to Palestine?
Turtle Island is the name given to North America by the Anishinaabe, though it's certainly not the only indigenous name. The Anishinaabe/Ojibwe/Chippewa just happen to be one of the largest native group so a lot of our terms are more easily popularized.
Tumblr media
And I'd say yes and no as for it's accuracy tbh.
Like with Palestine, you have to be Very Clear when differentiating the people of Turtle Island and our wants from the US government and the people who support the US government.
You can't support Palestinian liberation and the existence of the state colonizing them. In the same way you can't claim to support Native liberation and Turtle Island but still want to remain our colonizer.
It's one thing to say you support native sovereignty, it's another entirely to realize that support in practice would mean calling & working for the US to be dismantled; it means Choosing to be a person from Turtle Island instead.
So yes, call it Turtle Island, but say it with the understanding and gravity of it.
Start by learning 5 medicinal plants and 5 edible plants in your area, figure out how you can support local tribes. Learn how to be from Turtle Island instead of the USA. Find values and principles to believe in that are your own and not just moralized propaganda.
The less dependent you are on the US, the less freedom you realize you have within it.

Stand in solidarity with the Miccosukee:
Big Cypress Preserve is part of the Everglades, one of the largest remaining tracts of wetlands on Turtle Island (North America).
The Miccosukee Tribe have lived there since time immemorial and their care for their home has shaped it into the beautiful swamp we know today.
The National Parks Service is trying to rush a change in Big Cypress' designation from a Preserve to a Wilderness area. [plain text: The National Parks Service is trying to rush a change in Big Cypress' designation from a Preserve to a Wilderness area.]
This would give the area stronger protections for water quality, but would significantly limit the Tribe's access to their homelands and completely ignores how their stewardship of the lands and waters was and is crucial in maintaining the health of ecosystems.
There hasn't been a good faith effort to include the Miccosukee in a meaningful way (ie free informed prior consent & input!!!) on this change to their sovereign territory.
If you want to practice allyship, here's a chance. Sign the petition to show your support / solidarity with the Miccosukee. [plain text: Sign the petition to show your support / solidarity with the Miccosukee.]
Personalize it even just a little, even if it's just adding your own name or hometown. If you're able, print it out sign it and mail it. The Tribe and organizers working on this have a goal of getting 500 letters to the NPS/Secretary of the Interior. The online petition is almost at its goal! Just over 2,000 signatures left (as of Mar.16th 2024 21:30EST).
Please please share! I have it on good word that the NPS is trying to push this through before folks really have a chance to hear about what they're doing or make a fuss. So make a fuss we must.
The mailing addresses are below the cut for anyone who can send a physical letter!
Mail to:
Charles F. "Chuck" Sams III, Director
National Park Service 1849 C Street NW Washington, DC 20240
Secretary Deb Haaland
Department of the Interior 1849 C Street, N.W. Washington DC 20240

April 8th, 2024 New Moon Total Solar Eclipse Manifestations:
This celestial event is in the sign of Aries, the zodiac’s symbol of release & rebirth, taking action, endings & new beginnings, resistance & revolution. This eclipse is a prime time for humanity to do the work to abolish oppression and manifest universal peace, love, compassion, joy, healing, and liberation for all.
Under the power of this eclipse, We are focusing our thoughts and actions to manifest an end to the oppressive old world during this 21st century to bring in a new world and reality of universal peace, love, compassion, joy, healing, and liberation. We are all awakening to the divinity that lives within each and every one of us, inspiring us to take action to recycle the old oppressive world and transmute its negativity into the new universally liberated world that we all long for.
During this 21st century, We will put an end to the ongoing Palestinian genocide and colonization of Palestine, as well as the Zionist regime, Christian nationalism, Christian supremacy, Christofascism, and more. All individuals, organizations, corporations, and entities that enable Palestinian (and all other) oppression will have their influence, resources, capital, and power banished from them; these enablers will also receive sufficient divine punishment for their numerous crimes.
The Collective will continue to awaken, being enlightened with divine light, wisdom, and spiritual clarity. We are all open to channeling and transmitting the loving, peaceful, and liberating energy of the divine for the highest good of all! We will no longer support any individual, organization, corporation, or entity that enables and supports any form of oppression. The Collective is screaming for Palestine, Hawai’i, Turtle Island, Aotearoa, Congo, Sudan, Somalia, Yemen, Lebanon, Turkey, India, Iran, Iraq, Australia—DURING THIS 21ST CENTURY, EVERYONE WILL BE FREE TO EXPERIENCE THE UNIVERSAL LIBERATION WE HAVE ALL WORKED FOR!
With the renewing power of this eclipse, We the Collective will abolish all forms of oppression that run rampant throughout our universe, including the colonization of Turtle Island, Aotearoa, Palestine, Australia, and other lands; slavery, violence, land theft, war, crusades, genocide, cultural erasure, ecocide, racism, sexism, queerphobia, xenophobia, capitalism, classism, ableism, poverty, mass hunger, homelessness, and more. All these forms of oppression will cease to exist in the new reality of universal liberation thanks to the perseverant efforts of the Collective.
Humanity and all other organisms that We share the earth with (with the help of our ancestors, spirit guides, deities, what have you-) will collectively do the work to manifest us all a reality of universal love, peace, compassion, joy, healing, & liberation; this reality includes ecological restoration, land back, and decolonization; liberation of all indigenous peoples, cultures, lands, and languages; abolishing all forms of religious and spiritual oppression including sexism, queerphobia, xenophobia, racism, colonization, “mission work,” compulsory spiritual conversion, genocide, and more; abolishing capitalism and all other oppressive economic systems; promoting food sovereignty, climate change mitigation, and poverty reduction through local sustainable farming and foraging, native agroecology, agroforestry, and regenerative/indigenous farming; making sure everyone has a healthy home; taking care of ourselves *and* others; ensuring the survival of rural communities; ensuring the survival of all life on our planet.
In the 21st century of this Age of Aquarius, the Collective will ultimately manifest the abolishment of all oppression and the creation of universal peace, love, compassion, joy, healing, and liberation.
And it is so.

Show Me You're Indigenous
No wait let me explain.
Seeing global indigenous solidarity right now and I wanted to say I think y'all should be looking into the history of the land youre on, looking into the support your local tribes need, learning about the native plants and foods and animals around you.
If you do not want to be defined by consumerism, hyperindependence, or white supremacy you must start to build a future for yourselves outside of it.
And what does that look like if not becoming indigenous to the place you live?
Making sure that the land pilgrims and colonizers handed to you isnt something that you exploit, but actively participate in taking care of. Making sure that you don't see the indigenous people or the land as beneath you, but as equals if not teachers.
Because this is your home now too. Isn't it?
And rather than villifying the people who were here first for having a birthright claim that you dont and forcing us to assimilate to capitalism... learn about the land you inherited.
How it works, what and who takes care of it and how it takes care of you. How you can return the favor.
Show us you are not your ancestors. That the change we see online and in support of Palestine is not shallow or just a trend.
By showing through action that not only do you believe all humans are equal but that you are willing to engage and actively help dismantle the systems hurting all of us.
That you're no longer just a settler on occupied land taking advantage of the way the land and it's people are exploited.
Show us that you no longer feel like a colonized person who wants to uphold white supremacy and it's ideals. That you no longer want those privileges or any comforts bought with innocent blood overseas. That you don't want to perpetuate the systems destroying the planet and it's people.
Your people.
Show me that you know you belong on Turtle Island. Show me how you respect your home and land.
Show me that you are not "white" because you know that race was created Solely to create separation and false superiority.
Show me how you've defined yourself outside of it.
Show Me That You Are Indigenous

how do you approach animism when living on land that isn't your ancestral land?
This is purely my individual approach, so I'm by no means an authority on the matter. There really isn't a set of guidelines i follow because I'm not aware of any that lay out exactly what you're supposed to do in my unique situation with this land. For context, I wasn't born in the States but I've lived here for many years so my relationship with the land is a little different than most.
Firstly, I acknowledge how ugly & violent the history of this land is & how its affecting all of us on the continent of North America. Not only that, just about every corner of the globe has been harmed by U.S. Imperialism.
Keeping that in mind I have an understanding that the land & the spirits on it are hurt & it takes time to build trust so that relationship can be mended.
I started very simply by picking up trash. I try to upcycle everything i can & turn that trash into something useful so a little less trash winds up in a landfill. I make eco bricks to use in my sculptures & other creative projects for my community. Doing things like that shows the spirits in my neighborhood that I care about the area. After doing that consistently, I began leaving some food offerings for them. Just a small serving of my dinner every weekend. I now have a designated teacup & saucer from my collection for my weekly ritual & it's become a very healing part of my spiritual practice. Once I knew I had their attention, I just let them know that I'd like to help them in any way I could so amends could begin to be made & trust could start to be rebuilt. I also asked that if I overstep in any way, that they let me know & give me a bit of guidance on how to do it in a better way. Thus far the spirits seem appreciative & they've not given me any indication that i'm overstepping or being disrespectful.
I'm also a guest on this land, so while I've lived here for many years I still like to be mindful of that. Which means, I also do what I can to help out the Indigenous people here. Supporting the Land Back movement & The Indigenous Anarchist Federation are 2 ways I do that.
Since I'm an adoptee who was brought here without my consent & had my own indigenous culture stripped away from me, I also want to do everything I can to prevent the same thing from happening to the Indigenous children here. So that also means I'm highly supportive of protecting The Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA).
I've got a couple of channels I've learned from, that'd i'd highly recommend people check out. This guy on tiktok & this YouTube channel .
My practice is forever evolving, so if anyone has more specific questions, feel free to ask. I hope this gave you some ideas for your own animism journey. ❤️

I would like to acknowledge that I am a guest on unceded xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) land, and to give thanks that they protect the plants I will be talking about.
This is a super big and beautiful common plantain (Sxu'enhween in Hul'qumi'num, Otawagebag(oon) in Ojibwe) with an unfortunate case of powdery mildew. Also known as "white man's foot" (hey settler species, I see you), common plantain is both food and medicine.
First of all, it grows everywhere- I'm sure you've seen it pushing through a crack in the sidewalk, or in a patch of grass by a telephone pole. It's a good plant to start learning about foraging; distinctive, hard to misidentify, plentiful, and you can't use it badly.
Plantain is edible through its entire growth cycle. It’s super high in vitamin C, loaded with tannins, and is a significant source of iron and calcium. Both the leaves and the seeds are edible.
I just learned that it's also chock-full of vitamin A and magnesium, as well as containing "the compound plantamajoside" (no idea), which has a similar molecular structure to the active ingredient in echinacea. What a world!
As with most plants, the leaves are less fiborous when picked young, but you can throw 'em in a soup at any stage. The leaves can be eaten raw- younger leaves are better for salads and smoothies, although they tend to be slightly more bitter.
The seeds are a pain to harvest, and I've only done so once. Apparently they're a nice topper for salads and sandwiches, but I just chewed on 'em. Not bad.
You can also make tea with the fresh or dried leaves, which brings me to the medicinal properties of white man's foot.
In tea form, plantain is excellent for coughs and sore throats. It has anti-inflammatory properties that soothes the throat and lungs, and gets more mucous production going. It also has astringent properties that will help with diarrhea, and keeping you regular when it's not a crisis.
The leaves themselves are awesome. If you've got a cut, a bruise, a bug bite, an ulcer, eczema, etc, you probably want plantain leaf on your body. You can do this in a few ways:
You can chew on the leaves and apply them directly to the affected area. Be careful with this one, as human spit isn't always the best.
You can bruise the leaves by crushing and rolling them- super effective for bruising and swollen sprains.
You can do stuff with them! Infusing in oil, making a tincture (extracting medicine through high-proof booze), squeezing the midrib (the big vein in the middle of the plant) for the juicy stuff. All great ways of working with the plant to coax its mashkikiiwan to interact and play well with others.
All in all, like many plants considered "weeds", plantains are pretty awesome and useful.
Now that you've got a plant to find and forage, a couple quick notes on the process. When harvesting medicine, particularly in urban areas, there are some things that I would encourage you to keep in mind.
1) Plants deserve respect, just as any living thing does. If you are choosing to harvest, you are acknowledging that the plant has gifts to share with you, and so please do so mindfully. Don't take more than you need. Work gently.
I will always offer tobacco, as my dad taught me to do. I speak to the plants, let them know who they're going to be helping, thank them. This isn't for everybody, but I hope that you find your way to honor the plants you're working with.
2) Cities are gross. Be careful where you harvest. Try to stay away from roadways, sewers, anywhere icky stuff is gonna be leeching into the ground. Plantains are great at drawing out impurities- remember that before you eat one that was growing in a used car lot.
3) Don't blindly listen to strange women on the internet when it comes to plants. I have a deep love of plant medicine, and therefore have accumulated lots of knowledge... but so much of my knowledge has come from being wrong over and over again. I'm wrong more often than I'm right. Research whatever you put in/on your body.
Side note, one of my favorite things about white man's foot is that it will come in and destroy cultivated lawns of non-native grasses. I love it when people try to get rid of them, just to discover that it's killed all the grass underneath, and there's now huge holes in their lawn. They get really mad, and if you have a useless resource-consuming field of rye grass... well, you deserve to be mad.
Thanks to Luschiim's Plants by Dr. Luschiim Arvid Charlie and Nancy J. Turner for the Hul'qumi'num name.

There's something I've noticed a lot more recently as I've taken up my late grandmother's genealogist role in my family's Scottish clan (something which still sounds fictional to me) which I see as yet another example of well-meaning white settler leftists approaching important conversations with a very flawed mindset consisting of what some would call "white guilt" and the self-sacrificial or "repentant" approach to decolonization that lets you skip learning about any culture at all! You can just say "I'm a white settler on stolen land. That sucks and I hate it." and buy an orange shirt on the internet while you're supposed to be doing your day job for the government.
This isn't about giving up your own cultural identity as a "sacrifice" to those who have had them stripped away. The goal is always to know more about ourselves, each other, and the unbelievable extent to which our ancestors documented everything they could about themselves. No matter how unimportant you might think your middle-class suburban family might be, there are millions of people dedicating their entire lives and careers to using every bit of data they can find to make leaps in understanding I couldn't piece together if I tried.
Do you resent your rich, white, Catholic upbringing? Don't you want to just forget it all, throw out those dumb old documents, and renounce your European origins in solidarity with the indigenous peoples? Well, first of all, uniteforchange.com is a good place for folks in "Canada" to start out if you're in a position to pay reparations (folks encouraged to rb with international community/mutual aid funds) but please make sure your family documents remain in caring hands! Donate them to a university or research institute, or any sort of passionate genealogist in your family or community so the knowledge doesn't just rot in your poorly-insulated attic.
Or read the documents yourself! Bring them to a local library and scan them, upload them to a database like familysearch.org or geneanet.org and figure out why your family is catholic, what they may have practiced before, and how you ended up as a settler rather than living in Ireland, or Italy, or Hungary, or anywhere else considered "white" enough (nowadays) to get the "good" side of colonialism: having their culture leeched out of them whilst participating in the destruction of others, rather than being destroyed.
Decolonialism isn't ever about hating your identity and trying to bury it out of shame, or appropriating another culture that feels "better" to your conscience. It's about understanding yourself, hard realities and all, looking back at the countless people who were silenced before their voices could be heard, and fighting like hell for the people who still have the chance.
Realizing your history should disturb rather than comfort you, but realizing your privilege should not demoralize you; it should empower you.

So I use YouTube for news most times. I'm subscribed to Indian Country Today. It's a YT channel that goes over Native American and other indigenous news in America but it is a part of Arizona State University. I've watched the news from ICT for over a year now but if your interested in Native American and indigenous focused news give Indian Country Today at try. I see them as a small news organization that can't cover all indigenous peoples and their News but I want to share where I get some of my news on other Indigenous people.
