i talked about it on twitter last night but here's my tgcf live action thoughts:

1. a lot of people were upset by the suggestion of pei ming having a mustache but nie mingjue's mustache in cql really Awakened something in me so i'm cautiously hopeful that if pei ming has a mustache it will at least be sexy

2. i think darren chen has the perfect face for xie lian

3. i don't think anyone should play hua cheng i think he should just be drawn in by starember for every episode

My Unicorn Girl

Episode Count: 24 Episodes Runtime: 45 Minutes each. Dubbed: yes? Ending type: <spoiler>Slated for a Happy ending.</spoiler>

Story: Sang Tian passes her figure skating test, but fails her cultural exam by one point and isn't admitted to her dream university, but ends up getting admitted as a male hockey player. Wen Bing, who has face blindness, finds himself attracted to Sang Tian despite their differences. So together they try to find a way to reach their dreams. It's Slice of Life with high romance thrills. Won't make you think that deeply. Feminism Tests: Bechdel?: Kinda. Marginally. Two female named characters, yes. Talk about something other than men. Kinda. Mako Mori: Yes. Sexy Lamp Test: Half in half out. She does make decisions that change the direction of the story that stick in the long term, but there isn't one end to end decision where She makes a decision, might get into trouble for it and finds a way to rescue herself out of it. Many of the beginning decisions sometimes start with other characters, rather than her own ideas, or she has an idea, gets into trouble for it and then is rescued by the male lead. So her agency is limited (compared to the other characters.) Some of the secondary characters have more agency than she does. (Like the lost briefcase incident is an example of an end to end agency.) Production: I'll be honest and say the acting didn't win me at first. It took me about 3-4 episodes to appreciate some of the subtleness of it. Darren Chen is probably the reason most attracted-to-men are watching this. He gives really good stares to camera and without that probably people wouldn't really be interested, honestly.

The lighting is actually pretty good throughout and the production values, even with the mostly limited sets are surprisingly high. (The trade off is the somewhat obvious product plugs, but it also means the clothing is on better par than most.) Why would you watch this: The lack of feminism isn't directly frustrating as you might think reading this review (You'd have to pay pretty close attention to catch the slips), since the majority of the focus is on team building, sports, and the sizzling romance. The pacing is actually oddly slow, but fast? I don't know if that makes sense. In another words, you'll live for the romance and sports highs, but if you step back and think about it, the story pacing itself is slow, but somehow one wouldn't mind that. I don't think people who directly loathe Kishotenketsu will like this. And people who dislike Slice of Life and college romance things will probably also dislike this. And people who want female characters with full agency and are looking directly for it will be disappointed. But if you want a cheap amusement park ride, and are a bit stressed out for whatever reason, this might be your ticket. Notes: This is worthy of marathoning. Though it’s likely in later years you’ll forget you’ve done it.
