Stealing Time
I was 13 and Finn was 11 when we met. He and I both had pretty full schedules. Finn was training to be a Stormtrooper and I was Snoke’s apprentice. Finn had called the Supremacy his home for as long as he could remember. He had no memory of his parents. I felt bad for him. At least I had a few memories of my parents...
Due to our full schedules, we had to find time to spend together. I would often get my food from the mess hall where all the officers and higher-ups ate and immediately leave with my tray. Prior to meeting Finn, I would take my food to my quarters and eat alone because I didn’t feel like breaking bread with a bunch of stiffs in suits who were much older than me and who took to staring at the only kid present.
After meeting Finn, we would steal away and meet up in a place where we hoped we wouldn’t be found, usually in some underused hallway, alcove, or stairwell. The Supremacy was nearly ten leagues wide, so there were many hiding places. We had become fast friends. We would meet up outside of mealtimes as well. Finn had been on the Supremacy much longer than I, so he knew some tricks. I was amazed sometimes at how often he was able to get away.
One day, we had met up outside of mealtimes in a deserted hallway. We were sitting with our knees drawn up, backs against the wall, just talking about anything.
Then we heard heavy footsteps approaching. We were in a dead-end hallway, so there really wasn’t any place to hide. So we simply sat there waiting to find out who had decided to come this way.
A silver glint of armor told us that it was Captain Phasma. I, who had never seen Phasma without her helmet, found her intimidating and definitely one of the people on the ship I did not want to cross.
Finn stood up right away at attention. I slowly got to my feet.
“FN-2187...don’t you have somewhere to be?”
“Yes, Captain,” said Finn. Phasma turned to me.
“I’m sure you have somewhere to be as well?”
I swallowed and looked down. Phasma knew full well I was Snoke’s apprentice so she was somewhat familiar with my schedule.
“Yes, Captain Phasma.”
“Then get to it,” she said curtly.
I nodded and Finn and I began walking back down the hallway with Phasma following. Once we got to a split, Finn and Phasma went left and I watched them walk away for a moment before heading right to my next training session.

An Unexpected Friend
Meeting Finn for the first time
I was thirteen, still new to the Supremacy. As usual, I was headed to my quarters with my tray of food, not wanting to sit with the officers and other higher-ups. I rounded a corner and almost walked straight into a young boy, also carrying a tray.
“Oh! Excuse me.” I looked him up and down. “Umm...you’re a kid,” I said, surprised.
He laughed. “So are you. Are you a trainee too?” He noticed my tailored uniform and tilted his head to one side.
“Yes, um...with Snoke.”
He raised his eyebrows.
“Supreme Leader Snoke?” he whispered, almost as though he was afraid someone would hear us.
“Yeah...”
“Wow...usually the only kids on board are Stormtrooper recruits. You’re the first one I’ve met that isn’t.”
“Oh...I see.”
“Do you want to eat together?”
“Sure!”
We found a hallway to sit in.
“Where do you usually eat?” he asked.
“Well, I’m supposed to eat in the mess hall with the officers and the generals, but who wants to eat with those guys? They’re always so...stiff and they stare at me. So I usually take my food to my room.”
“You have your own room?”
“Yeah, don’t you?”
“Well, sort of. It’s a bunk in a big room with lots of other bunks. All the Stormtrooper trainees sleep in the same room.”
“Oh...” This was my first experience with a structured hierarchy. Back on Jakku, everyone was pretty much the same, except for the junk boss. Survival was the great equalizer. But here on the Supremacy, survival wasn’t much of a concern. Everyone’s basic needs were met, and so we had the luxury of hierarchy.
“I’m supposed to eat in our mess hall too, but I always sneak away,” he said.
“Why?”
“I don’t know...I like exploring the ship, I guess. So what’s your name?”
“Rey...What’s yours?”
“FN-2187.”
“FN - what?” I thought he was joking at first.
“FN-2187. That’s the only name they ever gave me. All the recruits have names like that.”
“Huh...I can’t really see myself calling you that. Do you mind if I give you another name?”
His eyes lit up.
“Please? I’d love a real name.”
I chuckled a bit, then thought it over. “Hmmm...FN-2187...FN...Finn. How about I call you Finn?”
“Finn...yeah, I like that!”
I smiled. “Finn it is then.”
Finn was eleven years old then. I learned that he didn’t have access to the elevators, but he could use the staircases, so that’s how he had gotten to the upper floor. We didn’t have to ask if we wanted to be friends. We already were.
