4th August 1577, the infamous sighting of a ghostly black dog in St. Mary’s parish church of Bungay, in the south east of England, during a a great ‘tempest of violent raine, lightning and thunder,’ as the storm shock the church a strange and terrible shaped creature was seen to enter, resembling a hellhound it violently attacked members of the congregation before disappearing. Twelve miles away in the town of Blythburgh, the creature reappeared at the Holy Trinity Church, where it continued its attack of the congregation there. The events were recorded in the same year by the English clergyman, and poet Abraham Fleming (Flemyng). The creature is said to be that of Black Shuck, the name given to a ghostly black dog which is said to roam the coastline and countryside of East Anglia, England. Embedded in the folklore of the area, the name Shuck may derive from the Old English word ‘scucca’ meaning demon or possibly from the local dialect word ‘shucky’ meaning shaggy or hairy. Further north there are also the tales of other spectre dogs, the white ‘Gallytrot’, (‘Gally’ being an old word for fright); and the ‘Barghest’ of York, who enters the city and preys upon travellers in the narrow mediaeval lanes, such as the most famous known as the ‘Shambles’. A Black Dog has also been seen as the site of the Norman motte and bailey castle known as Clifford’s tower, the site of the 1190 massacre of the Jewish population. Despite living for nearly two years opposite the tower, I unfortunately, (or fortunately if the impending doom aspect is to be believed), did not lay eyes upon the creature. Cinema, CIA, and the military!

As Top Gun Maverick breaks records at the box office. I would like to discuss a trend I have seen throughout the years in movies.

If you werent aware the Military and the CIA back some movies that come out if it gives them a good look. The Military has backed films in Marvel movies with tax payer paid use of military equipment and jets. The CIA backed movies including The Recruit. So it isn't surprising when movies like Battleship, Top Gun, and Marvel movies were backed by the military. Nothing says, "Join our forces" than a six pack, tan, aviator wearing, smiling gentlemen or young lady in uniform. Doing moves in jets, or standing next to Captain America in The first Avenger movie. Certain movies help boost recruitment during tough times.

But Im here to discuss another trend. A dark history of the military and CIA. Have you seen The Men Who Stare at Goats? or American Made? those are just two movies that make my point! They take a wide range of cast members such as George Clooney, Tom Cruise, Jeff Bridges, etc. They take the dark history of Advanced Interrogation, and put a spin on torture. This allows them to wash away the dark parts of our military with comedic relief! Why? Maybe people wouldnt want to watch a realistic movie about how our own military tortured people and used drugs on them?

Now what about the CIA? There are many positive movies out there like Spy Game that made the CIA look good, but it doesn't want you to see the truth. How the CIA has toppled regimes, countries, and assasinated people just for corporate wealth. Distablizing countries to keep the cost down for products, and paying their citizens a low wage. Now the movie American Made is one of many stories\true events that the CIA helped bring in illegal drugs into our country during War on Drugs. The CIA has helped bring in Heroin during Vietnam, Cocaine through pilots during Reagon Era. It has tested drugs on civilians in different countries, our own military, people in asylums, the list goes on.

Even during Afghanistan War when the Taliban was buring the opiate plants down. The military stept in to protect the fields. Afghanistan accounts for 80 percent for the worlds supply. Sure you will see our Military spent billions to stop the growth because it supplied Taliban with money, but then you will find another article saying Taliban stopped to produce the plant. So which is it?

So the next time you watch a movie about our governement agencies or the military. Look to see if they helped making the film?

Mummies: Once Used for Parties, Medicine, and Paint

Victorians had a time (dubbed Egyptomania) when they loved mummies so much, that they did strange and gross things with them.

The demand for mummies was so strong that some of the ancient mummies people were buying were not ancient at all.

That did not stop them, though. After all, they had parties to attend and mummies to…consume?

1. Mummy Unwrapping Parties

Yup, you read that right. If you wanted your party to be an absolute hit, you need a corpse to disrespect in front of a crowd of people. How it tended to work is that one or more person would stand in front of a crowd, and give a play-by-play of what they were seeing as they removed the bandages.

It was not just that people were fascinated to see the ancient dead (though that was part of it) but it was also because sometimes people found unexpected things in with the mummies; such as ritual objects or jewelry. Apparently, that made it particularly exciting.

“Some of these parties took place in a private setting, with the host, usually someone who had just returned from Egypt, sending out invitations. Others took place in a public setting, and needless to say, were often sold-out events.” Ancient Origins

The most popular man for this was Thomas Pettigrew, who made a fortune selling tickets for his events.

2. Medicine

You might be shocked to learn this, but there is actually a long history with cannibal medicine in Europe. Sometimes, people did it to cure their loved ones from the spells of a folkloric creature, sometimes it was because someone holy connected to a church died and people wanted a miracle, and sometimes it was because they thought what they were doing was based in science.

For the case of the Victorians and mummies, it was mostly the last one (though the other two happened as well).

"By the 16th and 17th centuries it had become one of the most common drugs found in the apothecaries’ shops of Europe" The Journal of Art In Society

These ground mummy would be turned into a drink or cream, and was said to cure a great number of problems; including epilepsy, broken bones and headaches. Basically, if you had any sort of problem at all, you might be prescribed some mummy medicine.

3. Paint

Ever heard of the paint color “mummy brown?” Well, while it certainly is not made in the same way today, historically it was really made out of mummies, white pitch and myrrh.

While the reviews for it was very mixed, the color was used for famous paintings (such as Liberty Leading the People, by Eugène Delacroix)

“We might have a few odd limbs lying around somewhere,” he apologized, “but not enough to make any more paint. We sold our last complete mummy some years ago for, I think, £3. The Dark History Magdalene Laundries

I believe that remembering dark times in history is important so we recognize when similar situations are proposed. So, today I will share one of these dark histories.

⚠️Do note that it is a story with abuse, imprisonment, and more. I feel like this post will be particularly triggering to residential school survivors.

I will try to keep this post brief and fairly censored, while providing videos with more information.

Magdalene Laundries (also called Magdalene Asylums and Magdalene Institutions) were institutions primarily run by the Roman Catholic Church. These institutions could be found in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Sweden, Canada, the USA, and Australia. The ones in Ireland are regarded as the most notorious.

The people confined to these institutions were “fallen women,” which meant any women who were outside of what society deemed appropriate.

According to survivors, you might find yourself in a laundry if you…

Are suspected of being a sex worker

Got pregnant outside of marriage

Got pregnant from an affair

Are an orphan

Ran away from your abusive husband

Have a mother deemed unsuitable to raise you

Have a mental illness

Are deemed too flirtatious

Are the victim of assault

Have an abusive father

Have struggling parents who want one less mouth to feed

Have a mother who remarried and her new husband does not want you

And some were sent with no known reason at all

The women were a source of free labour, primarily through a laundry business(hence the name). Little care was given to these women and children, and survivors report many levels of abuse.

"Ireland's first mother and baby home, at Bessborough, in Cork, had an even worse infant mortality rate of around 82 percent: In the year ending March 31, 1944, 124 children were born or admitted there, and 102 died." NBC News

Only some deaths were reported, and the number of remains found in mass graves in Ireland is around 1000.

Babies that survived would be given to new families.

Some women would be stuck in the institutions for their entire lives. An estimated 30,000 women were victims of these institutions in Ireland alone.

For a long time, the rumours were that the laundries were “only” for prostitutes. Now the rumours say that only those in Ireland were harmful. However, locations elsewhere in the world, such as Australia, Canada, and the USA, also have stories of abuse in the forced-labour institutions.
