Genetically-Engineered Glowing Zebrafish Are Invading Waterbodies Across Brazil
Tumblr media
While the trend of flashy, neon clothing hit the western world in the 1980s, it took about two decades for a similar trend to enter the world of fish aquarium hobbyists. Glowing neon-coloured fish, trademarked Glofish, became the world’s first genetically engineered species to be commercially available in the 2000s, and their ‘production’ simply skyrocketed thereafter.
These Glofish are essentially zebrafish (Danio rerio), but with fluorescent jellyfish genes endowed in them. While native to Southeast Asia, this freshwater species can now be found in aquariums across different parts of the world.
However, the problem is, their global presence is no longer restricted to just fishtanks.
A new study has found that these Glofish, especially their red- and green-glowing versions, have escaped the fish farms in southeastern Brazil, and are currently multiplying in the creeks of the Atlantic Forest. In doing so, they have also become one of the first transgenic species to accidentally escape and thrive in nature.

Could you please write something about Xavier going to a fair or something as a date. I have a feeling he wouldn’t exactly love it. Thanks
(I’m gonna use this as a way to introduce you guys to the fact I have just gotten some pet fish! This is some what of a origin story but I of course got these guys from a local pet store.)
He is smitten with the general idea of a fair.
He just does not like the execution of most of them.
Hearing about fair food he was excited to try it but was disappointed with the lack of.. sanitation that these kiosks brought.
These awful carnival games you would drag him to and force him to stand there or play for you.
The rides were subpar. Although he appreciated the opportunity for a kiss-kiss on the Ferris wheel. You seemed to adore this one swing ride though for heaven knows why.
And then an excited gasp left your lips as you approached one of those accursed rugged games. Under some blue lights some vibrant fish could be seen swimming around.
He let out a sigh in his head as you stood and played the stupid game. He shared a look with one of his bodyguards that stood carrying a large amount of prizes that said “you’ve got to be kidding me.”
But to Xavier’s pure shock (and possible horror) in a clear bag you carried 3 vibrant fish of all the same breed.
With the proudest smile he has ever seen from you, you held them up to show to him.
“I won fish!”
Xavier had to slide down his sunglasses just to gauge what had just occurred.
“I-I”
“This one is Mango, this one is Kiwi, and this one is Lemon. Oh! We’re going to need a blue light and a tank I suppose- these are Glofish Danios!”
Xavier forced a shaky smile on his face.
“That-That’s great dahling. We should be heading home now then to get them settled.”
And now you still had 3 fish that you had dubbed as a group “the skittles”. They were extremely spoiled with their tank as well.
Xavier was still liking the ideas of fairs so was now working on arranging his own fair sort of event but rich people. He also decided the two of you should spend a bit in the U.S. so you could get the true experience. He was now contacting Coachella to get your early tickets (and arranging your invites to Neon Carnival). He was about to get you booked for DisneyWorld but first wanted to know which resort you wanted to stay in.

So... I finally saw them.
My opinion; having the Green Fluorescent Protein (GFP) doesn't cause the fish any pain or health issues as far as we're aware. But taking a fish that is already one of the most commonly neglected due to ignorance and from false information given out by manufacturers, stores, etc. and making it FLUORESCENT and even MORE appealing to kids isn't ethical.
Most of these fish sold are going to a home because a child wanted a fish and a parent thought "What are those fish that live in mud puddles and like small tanks? Oh yeah a Betta." They buy a 1 gallon "Betta kit", clean it once a month and call it a day.
They treat it as little more than a toy, honestly. So by making it MORE toy-like, more manufactured, you have a fish that is even more appealing to that sort of crowd.
That's my issue. The catering to the casual crowd who tell me "I don't care if it does soon my son just wants a fish." Or "The box says it's for Bettas so I'm just getting this, a bigger tank is too expensive. I want something easy and small."
To be honest I feel this way about all GloFish and the associated "GloFish Tanks" that are 3 gallons and have pictures of zebra danios and black tetras on the box. It's greedy and the people doing this know better.

What I am going to do eventually:
Get a 37 gallon tank
Add in black diamond blasting sand as substrate
Put in a few plants
Add a lot of glofish of the zebra danios variety, in two small schools
A small school of panda corys
And then a half black angelfish

While perusing free stuff on craigslist, I came across a filthy 10 gallon tank, with two GloFish, set out on someone's porch up for grabs. HOW COULD I NOT. I can't keep these two long term, and I can't afford to put them in a larger tank with more schooling fish. If you or someone you know can take them and put them in a proper community setup, please message me! They are compatible with danios, tetras, rasboras, etc. I am in Sacramento, California and can transport them within an hour's distance. I can also ship them, but you'll have to cover the costs. If you are in the fishblr community, please feel free to reblog, I would love to see these fellas get a good home!
