The Widow’s best of 2020

Well… during a year when we haven’t been able to see many live shows we’ve still managed to find lots of things we loved. Here are some of them; live shows are indicated, otherwise we watched them online – our grateful thanks go to all the companies that streamed their productions for free – listened to them or read them. You’ll notice that our list includes lots of women and the occasional man.

But before that we start with a new category…

PERSON OF THE YEAR: Circus director Carol Gandey (pictured) of Gandeys Circus. If UK touring circus – an artform championed by The Widow’s Liz Arratoon for more than 25 years – is to survive Covid-19, it will be in large part to her. Gandeys had produced three shows before the UK’s March lockdown, two of which never had a chance to open, incurring hundreds of thousands of pounds in costs. It then provided accommodation and living expenses for 33 stranded artists, and meanwhile developed an air-flow working model for circus – trialling an opening at Butlins – which gave the government enough confidence to allow circuses to reopen with reduced seating capacities.

Carol constantly lobbied the government and the Arts Council for aid – as did other industry figures – and her application to the Arts Council Recovery Fund, which was said to be exceptional, resulted in a £1.1 million grant; the largest amount awarded to any UK circus company. Gandeys used some of the money to cover the losses due to the lockdown, and to fund a survival package that included some reduced-capacity performances this autumn, as well as funding the production costs for reopening in 2021.

From one strong and inspirational woman to another…

BEST EXTRAVAGANZA: Rhianna’s Savage X Fenty Volume 2 TV special for her lingerie range. Wow! What a mix! This was an explosion of creativity; part fashion show, part dance show, part gig, part circus, part ad, and included a simply stunning floral set. Add a cast of big names, a wonderfully diverse choice of dancers and models, no expense had been spared. Exciting, fresh and really impressive.

BEST LIVE SHOW: Zebra, a solo show by juggling genius Wes Peden, which was part of the London International Mime Festival at the Southbank Centre’s Purcell Room.

BEST CIRCUS SHOW: The really inventive CAPAS by Circo Eia (pictured) – so great to see so many new ideas, and here’s our chat with cast member Francesca Lissia. Plus the intricate and dazzling Twenty Twenty by Gandini Juggling.

BEST DANCE SHOW: Faust by the Ballets de Monte-Carlo, featuring the spectral Bernice Coppieters (pictured) as Death; and Cia de Dança Deborah Colker’s super-stylish Belle, inspired by the novel Belle de Jour.

BEST KIDS’ SHOW: Little Angel Theatre’s hat trilogy, presented by puppeteer Ian Nicholson; an adaptation of the picture books by Jon Klassen: I Want My Hat Back, This Is Not My Hat and We Found a Hat.

BEST COSTUME: The Widow has always considered costumes to be extremely important. As Federico Fellini said: “Don’t forget that costumes, like dreams, are symbolic communication,” and frankly we wish more artists would make the sort of effort Dua Lipa made on Saturday Night Live!

Staying with costumes… slightly less glamorous, but an effort was made by Hot Mess in party-sketch work-in-progress Dirty Stop Outs.

MOST EXCITING: Meeting Marina Abramović in the foyer at London’s Barbican before the Efterklang gig.

BEST SHOWGIRLS: Seen in the 1972 film Un Flic; costumes by Colette Baudot. Also featured is a stunning black dress, worn by Catherine Deneuve, designed by Yves Saint Laurent.

BEST BURLESQUE: Lady of Burlesque, starring Barbara Stanwyck, who wears costumes by the great Edith Head.

BEST FILM CREDITS: Sudden Fear, starring Joan Crawford as a scorned – but impeccably dressed – woman on the verge of a nervous breakdown!

BEST CASTAWAY: Hard to choose between Rupert Everett, Ian Wright or Daniel Radcliffe, who all washed up on BBC Radio 4′s Desert Island Discs.

BEST SHOWBIZ STORY: Catherine Russell – on Outlook, BBC Radio 4 – who has played the same role for 32 years and said the same lines more than 13,000 times. She holds the world record for the most theatre performances in the same role; Margaret Thorne Brent – a psychiatrist who might also be a cold-blooded killer – in the off-Broadway play Perfect Crime.

BEST TV SERIES: It was a close call with The Queen’s Gambit, but our choice is the utterly brilliant My Brilliant Friend; the adaptation of Elena Ferrante’s series of Neapolitan novels.

BEST DOCUMENTARY: The Bee Gees – How Can You Mend a Broken Heart.

BEST SHOWBIZ MEMOIR: John Cooper Clarke’s I Wanna Be Yours.

This is a painstakingly detailed and enthralling account of Gresham’s life, lovingly compiled by his widow and friends from material written by Gresham himself. Want one? Details below.

BEST SHOWBIZ AUTOBIOGRAPHY: The heartbreaking Everything and Nothing: The Dorothy Dandridge Tragedy by Dorothy Dandridge and Earl Conrad. The revealing autobiography of Hollywood’s first African-American sex symbol and screen legend.

BEST GIG: Sevdaliza’s only show this year, streamed live from The Hague's Koninklijke Schouwburg (Royal Theatre) to a global audience.

BEST SONG: Désormais by Charles Aznavour, which was used as the title track for the film Chambre 212 or On a Magical Night.

BEST ALBUM COVER: Charles Aznavour’s Désormais. That hat!

MOST CHARMING: The sheep invasion during Isabella Rossellini’s show Sex and Consequences, which was streamed live from her farm in Bellport, Long Island, USA. Yes, her live sheep!

BEST TWITTER CIRCUS PIC: The stunning Crystal Pyramids by Severus posted by @PablosCircus.

BEST LIVE COMEDY: Myra Dubois – star of Britain’s Got Talent – at The Poodle Club in Sydenham. Some of us recognised the greatness of Rotherham’s finest before she was famous!

GONE TOO SOON: Actor Chadwick Boseman (pictured) at just 43, funnymen Eddie Large, Tim Brooke Taylor and Bobby Ball, and dancer, choreographer and actor Ann Reinking.

MOST MISSED: Davenports magic shop that closed at the end of January – but you luckily can still order from it online – and a more recent casualty, after 96 years, London’s beautiful Café de Paris.

MOST DISAPPOINTING: Madonna’s Madame X show at the London Palladium. Goodness, this was shoddy! She was so incapacitated that she simply marked all the dance moves and had to be helped around the set, and up and down the stairs. The tickets were exorbitantly expensive and no one paid to see someone hobbling about onstage. We paid to see Madonna!

But let’s not end on a sour note…

BEST SHOWBIZ MASK: Shirley Bassey’s fabulous sequinned number!

REASONS TO BE CHEERFUL: Some things we’re looking forward to include: The 45th London International Mime Festival, which will be screening free-to-view videos of shows from past LIMF editions, running an extended workshop series with live and online classes, and hosting a series of talks.

We’re also awaiting the new series of Call My Agent, which starts on Netflix on 21 January 2021.

And, last but by no mean least, one of the world’s truly funny clowns, Gloria – also known as Mooky Cornish – has been busy training her chickens – Kukuruzza (pictured top), who has been taking piano lessons, and the athletic Galina – and will be touring the Canadian prairies with them next summer. My Story So Far...

For those who don’t want to scroll back through all of the posts. This is a long post so grab a cuppa, a chocolate bar and make yourself comfortable.

When I was in my teens I discovered heavy metal music and fell in love! All it took was the first chord of Paranoid by Black Sabbath. My dad was into heavy metal when he was younger and he had the Black Sabbath Greatest Hits tape (yes, cassette tape!) and a Judas Priest tape by the stereo. My mum refused to let me listen to “that rubbish” which obviously made me want to listen to it more. My dad & kept ferrets and he has a radio/cassette player in the ferret shed. I took the Black Sabbath tape to the shed and dad let me listen to it. I quickly discovered Metallica, Machine Head, Limp Bizkit, Linking Park, Deftones etc. At 16/17 I was regularly going to Coventry’s best metal club, the Dog & Trumpet. I moshed to the music like there was no tomorrow. 20 years later was the tomorrow I would painfully discover. I also worked in old people’s homes, often lifting and holding residents at their dead weight due to lack of staff, equipment or both. I thought I knew better when I was warned about the repercussions of living such a lifestyle and working.

I had my first bout of Sciatica when I was approx. 21. I was sat watching TV in the living room on a Sunday evening when my cousin, Becky, arrived with Aunty Teresa and suggested a trip to the Nugget for a pint or 6. I jumped up from the sofa and the pain was excruciating. I went to the pub and sank 6 pints of lager in 2 hours, the pain refused to budge. The next day I went to see my GP who prescribed 10 days of Prednisolone and told me it may or may not go away! At this point I thought Sciatica was the diagnosis, I didn’t know it was a symptom. Luckily after a week it corrected itself 90% with the odd twing now-and-again.

One night I was at The Campbell in Coventry and after having a fair few drinks was up with some mates dancing on the bar. I misplaced my foot, fell off the bar and landed flat on my back. Everyone panicked but I just lay there laughing my head off! Apart from looking like I’d been dragged through a hedge backwards and a slight bump to the head I was fine. The sciatic pain stopped altogether after that fall! Since then I always had a bad back on and off. Each time just becoming slightly worse. I took painkillers and ignored it. When I did see a GP they just told me to take painkillers and rest. At no point was I offered any kind of investigation into what was causing the back pain. Even when the GP acknowledged I’d been having problems for some years!

Fast forward 20 years, now I’m 37. In February this year my back started to play up again. Out came the painkillers and I just carried on. My lower left leg and foot went completely numb. I ignored it, thought it’s only sciatica, it’ll sort itself out in a few days. Over the next few weeks I found it increasingly painful to walk. Colleagues were commenting on how much pain I looked like I was in. I laughed it off as I waddled around. One day my back was giving me hell. The walk to my car after work was so painful I ended up crying in my car before driving home. At this point, in April, I decided to see my GP. It was clear that this time it was not going to go away. My GP gave me painkillers and referred me for a MRI advising that Sciatica is a symptom of something happening to my sciatic nerve and a MRI will help find out what was going on. He signed me off work because I was in so much pain. I had no idea how long the MRI appointment was going to take. I knew it takes 4 weeks for the results from the MRI to come through and could take up to 8 weeks to get the scan.

My brother was really worried about me so he booked and paid for an appointment for me on 20th of April at his Chiropractors. I went thinking they would look at my back and say “we can sort this in a couple of sessions”. Instead he did an hours worth of tests. He was surprised and clearly irritated that none of the doctors I had seen previously had done the basic checks (reflexes etc). He told me that the only treatment he could offer before my MRI was laser treatment to help ease the nerves because my back was so bad and due to the neurological effects. Not only is my left leg and foot partially numb but my foot is weak due to the impact of whatever is going on in my back is having on my nerves. He advised me to lay down as much as possible on my right side with a pillow between my knees, to use a freeze pack on my back for 20 minutes of every hour I’m awake and strongly advised me to have the MRI ASAP also advising he could refer me for a private MRI for £250! I told him I needed to think about it. During the appointment I laughed, joked and swore a little when it hurt! When I got back into my car I cried. I was hoping for good news not to be told that it’s worse than I thought it was. I now need to decide if I can wait for the NHS MRI and results or to go ahead with a much quicker private MRI.

On the 25th of April I chose the private MRI, my housemate who is also a best friend paid for it using money she had saved for a holiday we were going on with friends. I called the Chiropractors who advised I would get a call from the private clinic to arrange an appointment. The next day they called me and advised they had a cancellation for the 27th of April! I couldn’t believe how quick it was. I jumped at the chance. I had my MRI at Heath Lodge Clinic. Di (my best friend/housemate) came with me for support. It was a beautiful building set in lovely gardens. The receptionist was really nice and helpful. The waiting room had bookshelves with hundreds of books, plenty of leather armchairs and a coffee/hot drink machine. There was also a coffee table with plenty of magazines to choose from. The receptionist had given me a heath & safety form to fill in and offered to collect it after seeing me hobbling around. I only had to wait about 5 minutes before being called through, during which I saw bunnies in the garden of the clinic. I love wildlife.

The radiologist and assistant were really friendly. We all praised the comfort of wearing Sketchers as all three of us had a pair on. The MRI only took 10-15 minutes. I had to lay on my back and despite taking painkillers (2x500mg Paracetamol, 2x50mg Tramadol & 2mg Diazepam) it was agony. The pain in my back and left leg was horrific and it did make me cry. I managed to stay perfectly still though because I wanted to get it done. Both were surprised when I asked for a tissue afterwards. They both praised me on how still I stayed and told me off for not making them aware so I could have a break. I explained that I just wanted to get it out of the way. I returned to the waiting room while they prepared the CD of images. I had a lovely chocomilk but was struggling to get comfortable sitting or standing. After about 10 minutes the CD was ready, we paid and left. The receptionist advised my chiropractor should receive the report in 5 working days! I was so relieved to have gotten the MRI out of the way. I knew it was going to be painful and I also want to know what is going on in my back ASAP.

At this point I was on 2xNaproxen 500mg 2xper day, 2xParacetemol 500mg 4xper day, 2xTramadol 50mg 4xper day & Diazepam 2mg 3xper day. I was still in a lot of pain.

On the 29th of April I got the MRI appointment letter from University Hospital Coventry & Warwickshire advising my NHS MRI was booked for 13th of May! 1) It took 5 weeks to get this letter! 2) I’d have had to wait another 2 weeks for the MRI! 3) I’d have had to wait a further 4 weeks for the results!!! All while I was in agony! I was so glad I had my MRI privately. Got apt 2 days after referral & only a weeks wait for results.

On the 6th of May I had an appointment with the Chiropractor to discuss the results of the MRI. It was the news that I equally expected & dreaded. The L4/L5 disc bulge was significant enough for surgery to be the only option at that point. My Chiropractor advised of treatments but due to the severity he was reluctant to try them due to the risk of making it worse. I needed to take my copy of the report and MRI CD to my GP to get an urgent surgical referral. I was feeling a rollercoaster of emotions, glad to know what I was dealing with, upset with the severity and petrified of potential surgery.

I took my report to my GP who sent an urgent referral to see a neurosurgeon. I called the booking centre to see how long it could be and they said I should be given an appointment within 8 weeks and that the appointment will be within 18 weeks. I could’ve cried. On the 11th of May I got so excited because I had a letter from the hospital asking me to book an appointment with the General Neurosurgical – Neurosciences Department with the option of 3 hospitals: University Hospital Coventry & Warwickshire – 1.5 miles away, George Eliot Hospital – 8 miles away or Warwick Hospital – 12 miles away. I had the option to book online or by phone. I excitedly logged onto the website and entered the required info only to find out that none of the hospitals have any appointments available!!! I called the number on the letter and spoke to a lovely guy who advised none of the hospitals had released any blocks of appointments to be booked by this method! He was just as frustrated as me. He advised that he can send my details to the hospital of my choice and they will send me an appointment letter within 2 weeks.I opted for University Hospital Coventry & Warwickshire, not just because it is the closest but because I trust them more than the other 2 hospitals. So the waiting game restarted.

On the 19th of May I got a letter from the hospital to advise I was on the waiting list for an appointment!!! I hoped the consultant that reviewed my referral would give me an appointment ASAP. More waiting…

Whilst waiting a bought a walking stick to not only help me walk with less pain but to also stop me hobbling like I’d got something shoved up my bum! I also got to thinking about my bad back. How over the last few years (or more) my back has gone through “phases” of being bad and then would be better again. Each time it would be slightly worse, I would take painkillers and just get on with my life. Maybe each time my disc was bulging a bit more until eventually it caused my current issues. Even if I had tried to do something about it before I honestly don’t think my GP would’ve referred me for further investigation if I had tried to press them to. They would’ve continued to prescribe painkillers until it had settled again. Do we always have to wait for things get so bad before we get them sorted? The NHS is so stretched that GPs will only refer cases that are really bad. Also GPs are charged for the referrals which doesn’t help, especially if they are penny-pinchers or financially stretched themselves. I also suffer from chronic sinusitis and allergic rhinitis, which means I suffer from loads of sinus infections and am allergic to everything airborne. It wasn’t until I was having back-to-back infections, affecting the left side of my face mainly, that the GP sent me for a CT scan. He actually made me say that I was in constant pain before he would do anything! I was told the results of the first scan showed that there was just a bit of fluid build up in my maxillary sinuses and everything else was ok. I saw a different GP about 3 infections later who looked at my first CT scan and then quickly sent me for another CT scan. Clearly the first GP had missed the actual problem. The second scan showed that I had a deviated septum blocking my left sinuses! One operation (Septoplasty) later I still have infections just not as often or as fierce. If the docs had sent me for a CT scan after the first couple of infections it may have saved me from a lot of suffering. Maybe if I had pushed my GP to investigate my back or they had instigated an investigation sooner it could’ve been caught earlier, I wouldn’t be where I am now, in constant pain despite the painkillers. Struggling to sleep. Struggling to walk, sit and lay down. Getting pain so bad it makes me feel sick and makes me feel hot and sweaty. Looking at an operation to fix the problem because it has potentially gone passed the point of being treated by physiotherapy. It took my brother paying for an appointment at a Chiropractors and my friend paying for a private MRI scan for me to find out what is wrong before mid-June! By which time I could’ve caused more/permanent damage as I have a habit of battling through and getting on with whatever I’m doing. “What if’s” are the most annoying thoughts! What if I had spoken out? What if the GP had done their job better? What if the NHS wasn’t in crisis? What if I hadn’t been so stoic? What if I hadn’t handled my pain so well? What if I had complained more? At least I was on the road to getting some treatment, even though the traffic was/is slow.

On the 9th of May I called the hospital booking line, more out of boredom and impatience than anything else. The very nice gentleman I spoke to shocked me by advising that an appointment has been assigned to me. It’s for 10:20am on 31st of August 2017! I asked if there was a cancellations list I could join. He advised that they do not have a cancellations list but gave me the Neurosurgeon’s secretary’s phone number. I tried to call her but she’d already left for the day so I left her a voicemail message asking for a cancellation spot.

On the 10th of May the letter confirming my appointment arrived. It was then a case of waiting for a cancellation.

On the 15th of May I managed to speak to the Neurosurgeon’s secretary, she was lovely. Very helpful. I asked about being on a cancellations list and she said she would contact me when the next cancellation came up. She also advised that she’d look out for cancellations for the other consultants too.

On the 16th of May I went to see my GP about my pain meds as they were not working. She was very angry that the locum had only put me on 300mg of Gabapentin per day at a previous appointment. She was also unimpressed that I was taking Paracetamol as well, she said “you are way past Paracetamol, they are only sweets for you!” I advised that I no longer wanted the Diazepam as I didn’t feel it did anything for me. So she removed the Diazepam, Paracetamol and increased my Gabapentin to 900mg per day. I also had a call from the consultants secretary asking if I could make weekend appointments. I told her I could, to get cancellations you need to be a flexible as possible. Then she asked if I could attend an appointment on Sunday at 9:20am! I was genuinely shocked. I nearly bit her hand off!! I can indeed I told her. Then she confirmed I’d be seeing the consultant at 9:20am on Sunday 18th of June! You could’ve knocked me over with a feather. I was so happy I cried. My original appointment was for 31st of August 2017. I was excited, a little nervous and over all relieved as I wanted the pain to be sorted ASAP.

On the 18th of May my housemate came with me to my appointment as although I was ok about it on the Friday & Saturday, on the morning of the appointment I was a little anxious. We arrived 10 minutes early, we’d barely sat down in the waiting room when I was called through. I had downloaded a dictaphone app for my phone to record the appointment as I have them memory of a goldfish! I’d like to blame the painkillers but I’ve always been an “airhead”. I asked the consultant if I could record the appointment and his response was “go ahead dear”. He was lovely, very to the point but with a gentle manner. I instantly felt like I could trust him. There just seems to be something about him. He had read the MRI report I’d emailed to his secretary. The key points he said during the appointment were: “Nobody can give you a new back, nobody can give you a new disc and nobody can give you a new nerve.” “We can trim the disc to take the pressure off the nerve. It’s a repair not a cure. It carries risks.” “If the pain is getting better then don’t have the surgery, if it isn’t getting better or if it’s getting worse then think about having the surgery. Both having or not having the surgery carries the same risk of paralysis due to the pressure on your spinal cord.” “If you are happy to proceed with surgery it will be a L4/L5 decompression surgery and trim the disc. Again it is a repair not cure. Your back will always be problematic. If the nerves are too damaged it will not relieve the pain.”

I opted for the surgery. My back is getting worse, I need some relief and it makes sense to try to take the pressure off the nerves. There is a chance surgery will help to relieve the pain. Not having the surgery will leave me in agony.

I am now on his list. I’m not sure how long it will be before my surgery. The sooner I get this done the better. My pre-op is booked for the 4th of July but this in no way indicates when my surgery will be. In the meantime I need to manage the pain with painkillers which is proving to be a struggle.

On an emotional level, I am both relieved and upset. I knew how bad it was but hearing it from a consultant makes it “real”. I’m relieved because I know what I’m facing longterm so now I can get my head down and get on with it.

I am extremely lucky to have three close friends who have had similar surgeries and am a member of several support groups on Facebook. Along with family & friends I have plenty of support. For that I will always be grateful.

These are so much fun! And great little bits of character work, too. I really love that you asked me this!

One of the oldest celebrations with more than four centuries of tradition behind it takes place in the southern municipality of Arona when it celebrates the pilgrimage of San Antonio Abad its patron saint. This is the first big romería of the year and the main feature as San Antonio is the protector of animals, are animals and rural life in the area.

It is a week of events that culminate with the spectacular Pilgrimage on Sunday 13th January.

Thousands of people come to Arona, a lovely unspoilt haven in the hills above the coastal resorts, not just residents but tourists too, as the ayuntamiento provides 🌟free transport from Los Cristianos and Las Americas with the aim of publicising the romería among visitors who wish to learn about the real Tenerife.

The festivals outward appearance has varied over the years, but its raison d’être is still to honour the patron saint mainly with overflowing joy, partying, merriment and hospitality.

The streets and balconies of the town are decorated for the occasion with simple but effective discs featuring the local produce and traditional emblems of the romería. The air is filled with the aroma of roast pork and the sound of parrandas and folklore groups is everywhere.

🌟The day begins around 10.30am for the more religious-minded with a church service and a sung mass. This is followed by the image of the saint being transported around town. For those like me who are not religious, there is lots of fun and games including an artisans fair featuring arts and crafts and stalls with food and drink.

As the town is not big it is easy to see everything as it goes by. The central area is traffic free, making wandering amongst the procession very easy. It starts around noon from the main plaza which is the focal point of the celebrations. Several carts pulled by oxen lead the way and are followed by every dog, cat, rabbit, horse, goat, sheep and even ferret joining in to be blessed, well that is the origin of this tradition. The carts and floats are interspersed with musicians and dancers in traditional dress.

Drink plays a key role in any fiesta and this ancestral pilgrimage in honour of San Antonio Abad is no different. 🌟 It ends in the Plaza del Santísimo Cristo de la Salud with a great evening of revelry, beer and wine flow freely. Ladies in Canarian dress dance and sing for your entertainment and aroneros encourage visitors to dance, sing, drink and enjoy the massive firework display.

It is well worth a few hours out of your day to get to know the real Tenerife

Highlights of the Fiesta

On Thursday candidates from different parts of the municipality will participate in the traditional election of the Romera Mayor de Arona which will be held from 20.00 in the Plaza del Cristo de la Salud.

On Friday, January 11, at 9:00 pm, the magicians’ dance (Baile de Magos) will take place, also in the square and entertainment will be provided by different folk groups both from the municipality as well as guest groups. Note: it is essential to wear traditional clothes and bring food to share.

🌟 FREE TRANSPORT FOR THE PILGRIMAGE on SUNDAY, 13th JANUARY

10:00, 11:00, 12:00 hours: Departures from Los Cristianos (Juan Carlos I Avenue, opposite the Infanta Leonor Auditorium) and Playa de las Américas (Avenida Noelia Alfonso Cabrera, in front of the Zentral Center hotel) towards Arona

4:00 pm, 5:00 pm and 6:00 pm: Departures from Arona, with stops at (Juan Carlos I Avenue, opposite the Infanta Leonor Auditorium) in Los Cristianos, and (Noelia Alfonso Cabrera Avenue, in front of the Zentral Hotel Center), in Playa de las Américas.

🌟 SUNDAY, 13th JANUARY

10:00 Hours: Opening of the craft show – Plaza del Santísimo Cristo de la Salud, Arona. 11:00 am: Holy Mass sung by Parranda Chasnera. Parish San Antonio Abad At the end: Traditional Pilgrimage, with the performances of the different municipal folk groups and guests. Route: El Calvario, Domínguez Alfonso, La Luna and Calle Duque de la Torre. During the Pilgrimage: Traditional animal blessing. 4:00 pm: A Dance with the orchestras Wamampy and Tropin – Plaza del Santísimo Cristo de la Salud

On Thursday, January 17, the day of San Antonio Abad, a solemn mass will be celebrated. It will be attended by the mayor of Arona, José Julián Mena, who encourages both residents of the municipality and visiting tourists, to visit Arona during their patron saint festivities and discover the beauty, cultural and architectural value of the town as well as our beautiful resorts.

I’m kinda confused. That ending was sweet but it was abrupt and didn’t solve much. Actually, I think it bred quite a few questions I won’t get answered anywhere but the manga…ergh. Dangit, manga!

ReLIFE OVA 2

Didn’t think I’d see Sumire (the volleyball teacher) again.

Interestingly the kanji combo for human and fish (in that order) is “mermaid” but the other way around is “fishman”…hmm…

Mahou Shoujo Ore 1

Yay! This show is my first debut for the spring season so I couldn’t be happier – I’m actually getting my magical boys (unlike my magical girls, which are likely to be locked away behind HiDive’s paywall)! It’s not about rocks (LOL) but ore in this case refers to the Japanese male pronoun.

Ah, this is so PreCure. It’s like I’ve come home. Welcome home, Saki!

That “It was all a dream” definitely isn’t in the original, but it does set people’s expectations up, eh? The ol’ bait-and-switch.

Henshin = Transformation. It’s not “Transform” unless it has suru on the end.

The face in the song subs is a good touch.

Glass Galaxy is the ED if you’re not in the know.

Those stretched faces, kinda like Saitama’s…are from the original manga…(I feel sorry for admitting that now.)

Some animation of Saki is definitely 2010s, but it keeps feeling like this show was from 10 years ago from the stripped-back style. It’s quite the whiplash, but it’s not something I was ever bothered over (if you remember Saiyuki Reload Blast, that was a similar dilemma).

“…you’re an old hag once you’re over 15…” – Aside from vaguely calling back YOI’s young ages for retiring (which makes me kind of sad), there are PreCure girls who are over 15 (Cure Moonlight was 17) and the Outer Senshi were all older than 15 with the exception of Sailor Saturn, IIRC.

I think the OKAN on Sayori’s apron is meant to be short for okaasan, although I might be wrong there. (*still imagining what a wonderful world we live in, to be blessed with an adaption of this manga…even with two anime-original characters…*)

Okay…there was one shot there that reiterated why I don’t watch anime in public.

Zoku Touken Ranbu Hanamaru 12 (FINAL)

According to the rules of the game, you can only have one party in one time period at a time. Therefore, by bending the rules, you make for a more compelling anime…huh. They did it in Katsugeki too, although it was in a slightly different way.

Oh boy, I looked into this and this white-looking outfit is Yasusada’s Kiwame! Ooh, I was looking forward to this in Katsugeki and I finally get it! (I left before Kiwame was a thing, so I finally get to vicariously live out my Kiwame fantasies, LOL.)

If you’ve made it this far in TR, you obviously know how much Yasusada values Okita-kun…I’m so proud of my boy, even if he wasn’t a particularly special sword to me…

It’s wonderful to know that feeling – that I’ve supported TR from before the animes happened because of one measly sword known as Kashuu Kiyomitsu. That I now have friends all over the world with their own favourite swords who I can chat to anytime I want, because Toshiki Masuda got involved with a small franchise that got really big (in Japan). I think that’s a power of Boueibu’s “rookie system”, if I were to give it a name.

…With that, I say “farewell” to 2 seasons of Hanamaru! See you again someday!

ReLIFE OVA 3

Aw, Kariu and Ohga out on a lovers’ holiday…these guys are too adorable.

Arata says “You were made for each other” with such a straight face I can’t even…LOL.

Is it just me, or did they get more inventive with the backgrounds because the OVAs were straight to disc content?

My eyes have gotten so attuned to CGI I can tell the basket is CGI…I think that’s what made me toss (Space Battleship) Tiramisu off my list temporarily, come to think of it.

Arata still smokes? Oh dear…

I think it’s kind of obvious, but they picked blue for the boys and pink for the girls in the background.

These picture slideshows are pretty cool (kinda like YoI…?). Less animation to do, as well.

Huh? For some reason, when I look at this “Genus Port” place, I’m reminded of a place which I think is in Los Angeles (or it could be in Las Vegas or Hong Kong, I don’t remember). There’s a bunch of shops around there, a fountain and a painted sky on the roof, plus a fancy yellow brick “building” in the middle somewhere. I think it was vaguely Italian or other European-looking in shop aesthetic, but that’s all I can get from the depths of my brain…

The words “grow up” have a very special meaning here in two different ways.

I’m still wondering, why does the guy always have to fall in love first? If the guy isn’t in love first, the girl sometimes gets laughed at or people just call it a transient crush. It’s quite saddening, to get your feelings crushed like that.

Score one! The song is La La La Love Song by Toshinobu Kubota with Naomi Campbell.

The final episode is called “Life”, which doesn’t match “Seed” or “Need” at all. Nor does it match “Date”. Fair weather charms would be teru teru bouzu.

ReLIFE OVA 4 (FINAL)

Did I see the map of Japan on the wall in the original series??? Or is that a new addition?

Aw, this scene where they just cry for a minute really got to me. Not that I cried, but it really hit me in the feels.

I’ve never heard this phrase before…”pat answer”? Okay…?

I think Onoya just wanted senpai to notice her, LOL.

The revelation that Arata wanted to work for the ReLIFE lab startled even me, and I tackled the series long before a lot of people got in on it!

Yoake-san’s got a moon on his icon. Considering his surname means “daybreak” and one kanji means “night”, it makes complete sense.

I couldn’t read the nameplate, but you can tell from the clothing colours that’s Ohga’s house.

I found this article on hikikomori one time and thought it would be relevant to share here, actually. It’s talking about a company that gets hikikomori to be social again through repeated correspondence…kind of like ReLIFE itself.

As soon as I saw the line “Fate may tear us far apart”, I knew the ED for this episode was “Button”.

Why do I get the feeling there’s still something left for me to see…?

I was so dang close to crying when they remembered each other! Gah! I need to recover, but I have some new episodes on tap as well. So, with that, it’s the end of our time with each other, ReLIFE. Farewell, and until next time.

Dances with the Dragons 1

I think, out of simplicity, I’ll call this show “Saredo” (“Even Still”) instead. As to how I was attracted to this show, it was because not only are there some great voices at the helm, but I think “physics x magic” could really go places as a concept.

Guy with big sword. It reminds me of a lot of shonen anime, like D Gray Man…or even Deltora Quest…

“SareRyuu”? That seems like a strange name, I think “Saredo” suits it better.

The only thing I fixated on in Gigina’s full name was the weird mention of “Ashley” somewhere in it. If anyone were to tease him, that would be a wide opening for them to attack him with.

This is looking like a Grancrest all over again, which spells bad things (LOL) about this show. Despite that, an Aini seems to be the spell Gayus (learnt his name from promo material) was using.

Gayus and Gigina have a great rapport. If they decide to go comedy with this show, it seems that would be very welcome here.

My mind is blown…it’s a sword, but it also provides armour and kind of acts like a gun in how it does that…amazing…

I feel like I’m really back in the driver’s seat, now that I’m getting my first new action anime in 2 seasons! Winter wasn’t bad but it can’t keep an action anime fan down!

Gigina’s a competent dragon slayer, eh? Slay me instead *wink wink, nudge nudge*! (LOL)

So an Altar is a special type of dragon, one that’s so special it has to be in a league of its own. Duly noted.

This show is screaming for a dub, for some reason…that’s my thoughts on it, anyway.

Notably, Kenryu in Japanese could translate to “sword dragon” with the right kanji combo.

Uh…I guess I was wrong on the overall quality of humour in this show. The Horton joke was so black, I couldn’t see through it!

You can tell it’s more competent than Mahou Shoujo Ore from the air it holds, but Mahou Shoujo Ore is a lot more fun…so this’ll be a tough decision if I have to cut either of them…

My Story So Far...

For those who don't want to scroll back through all of the posts. This is a long post so grab a cuppa, a chocolate bar and make yourself comfortable. When I was in my teens I discovered heavy metal music and fell in love! All it took was the first chord of Paranoid by Black Sabbath. My dad was into heavy metal when he was younger and he had the Black Sabbath Greatest Hits tape (yes, cassette tape!) and a Judas Priest tape by the stereo. My mum refused to let me listen to "that rubbish" which obviously made me want to listen to it more. My dad & kept ferrets and he has a radio/cassette player in the ferret shed. I took the Black Sabbath tape to the shed and dad let me listen to it. I quickly discovered Metallica, Machine Head, Limp Bizkit, Linking Park, Deftones etc. At 16/17 I was regularly going to Coventry's best metal club, the Dog & Trumpet. I moshed to the music like there was no tomorrow. 20 years later was the tomorrow I would painfully discover. I also worked in old people's homes, often lifting and holding residents at their dead weight due to lack of staff, equipment or both. I thought I knew better when I was warned about the repercussions of living such a lifestyle and working. I had my first bout of Sciatica when I was approx. 21. I was sat watching TV in the living room on a Sunday evening when my cousin, Becky, arrived with Aunty Teresa and suggested a trip to the Nugget for a pint or 6. I jumped up from the sofa and the pain was excruciating. I went to the pub and sank 6 pints of lager in 2 hours, the pain refused to budge. The next day I went to see my GP who prescribed 10 days of Prednisolone and told me it may or may not go away! At this point I thought Sciatica was the diagnosis, I didn't know it was a symptom. Luckily after a week it corrected itself 90% with the odd twing now-and-again. One night I was at The Campbell in Coventry and after having a fair few drinks was up with some mates dancing on the bar. I misplaced my foot, fell off the bar and landed flat on my back. Everyone panicked but I just lay there laughing my head off! Apart from looking like I'd been dragged through a hedge backwards and a slight bump to the head I was fine. The sciatic pain stopped altogether after that fall! Since then I always had a bad back on and off. Each time just becoming slightly worse. I took painkillers and ignored it. When I did see a GP they just told me to take painkillers and rest. At no point was I offered any kind of investigation into what was causing the back pain. Even when the GP acknowledged I'd been having problems for some years! Fast forward 20 years, now I'm 37. In February this year my back started to play up again. Out came the painkillers and I just carried on. My lower left leg and foot went completely numb. I ignored it, thought it's only sciatica, it'll sort itself out in a few days. Over the next few weeks I found it increasingly painful to walk. Colleagues were commenting on how much pain I looked like I was in. I laughed it off as I waddled around. One day my back was giving me hell. The walk to my car after work was so painful I ended up crying in my car before driving home. At this point, in April, I decided to see my GP. It was clear that this time it was not going to go away. My GP gave me painkillers and referred me for a MRI advising that Sciatica is a symptom of something happening to my sciatic nerve and a MRI will help find out what was going on. He signed me off work because I was in so much pain. I had no idea how long the MRI appointment was going to take. I knew it takes 4 weeks for the results from the MRI to come through and could take up to 8 weeks to get the scan. My brother was really worried about me so he booked and paid for an appointment for me on 20th of April at his Chiropractors. I went thinking they would look at my back and say "we can sort this in a couple of sessions". Instead he did an hours worth of tests. He was surprised and clearly irritated that none of the doctors I had seen previously had done the basic checks (reflexes etc). He told me that the only treatment he could offer before my MRI was laser treatment to help ease the nerves because my back was so bad and due to the neurological effects. Not only is my left leg and foot partially numb but my foot is weak due to the impact of whatever is going on in my back is having on my nerves. He advised me to lay down as much as possible on my right side with a pillow between my knees, to use a freeze pack on my back for 20 minutes of every hour I’m awake and strongly advised me to have the MRI ASAP also advising he could refer me for a private MRI for £250! I told him I needed to think about it. During the appointment I laughed, joked and swore a little when it hurt! When I got back into my car I cried. I was hoping for good news not to be told that it’s worse than I thought it was. I now need to decide if I can wait for the NHS MRI and results or to go ahead with a much quicker private MRI. On the 25th of April I chose the private MRI, my housemate who is also a best friend paid for it using money she had saved for a holiday we were going on with friends. I called the Chiropractors who advised I would get a call from the private clinic to arrange an appointment. The next day they called me and advised they had a cancellation for the 27th of April! I couldn't believe how quick it was. I jumped at the chance. I had my MRI at Heath Lodge Clinic. Di (my best friend/housemate) came with me for support. It was a beautiful building set in lovely gardens. The receptionist was really nice and helpful. The waiting room had bookshelves with hundreds of books, plenty of leather armchairs and a coffee/hot drink machine. There was also a coffee table with plenty of magazines to choose from. The receptionist had given me a heath & safety form to fill in and offered to collect it after seeing me hobbling around. I only had to wait about 5 minutes before being called through, during which I saw bunnies in the garden of the clinic. I love wildlife. The radiologist and assistant were really friendly. We all praised the comfort of wearing Sketchers as all three of us had a pair on. The MRI only took 10-15 minutes. I had to lay on my back and despite taking painkillers (2x500mg Paracetamol, 2x50mg Tramadol & 2mg Diazepam) it was agony. The pain in my back and left leg was horrific and it did make me cry. I managed to stay perfectly still though because I wanted to get it done. Both were surprised when I asked for a tissue afterwards. They both praised me on how still I stayed and told me off for not making them aware so I could have a break. I explained that I just wanted to get it out of the way. I returned to the waiting room while they prepared the CD of images. I had a lovely chocomilk but was struggling to get comfortable sitting or standing. After about 10 minutes the CD was ready, we paid and left. The receptionist advised my chiropractor should receive the report in 5 working days! I was so relieved to have gotten the MRI out of the way. I knew it was going to be painful and I also want to know what is going on in my back ASAP. At this point I was on 2xNaproxen 500mg 2xper day, 2xParacetemol 500mg 4xper day, 2xTramadol 50mg 4xper day & Diazepam 2mg 3xper day. I was still in a lot of pain. On the 29th of April I got the MRI appointment letter from University Hospital Coventry & Warwickshire advising my NHS MRI was booked for 13th of May! 1) It took 5 weeks to get this letter! 2) I’d have had to wait another 2 weeks for the MRI! 3) I’d have had to wait a further 4 weeks for the results!!! All while I was in agony! I was so glad I had my MRI privately. Got apt 2 days after referral & only a weeks wait for results. On the 6th of May I had an appointment with the Chiropractor to discuss the results of the MRI. It was the news that I equally expected & dreaded. The L4/L5 disc bulge was significant enough for surgery to be the only option at that point. My Chiropractor advised of treatments but due to the severity he was reluctant to try them due to the risk of making it worse. I needed to take my copy of the report and MRI CD to my GP to get an urgent surgical referral. I was feeling a rollercoaster of emotions, glad to know what I was dealing with, upset with the severity and petrified of potential surgery. I took my report to my GP who sent an urgent referral to see a neurosurgeon. I called the booking centre to see how long it could be and they said I should be given an appointment within 8 weeks and that the appointment will be within 18 weeks. I could've cried. On the 11th of May I got so excited because I had a letter from the hospital asking me to book an appointment with the General Neurosurgical – Neurosciences Department with the option of 3 hospitals: University Hospital Coventry & Warwickshire – 1.5 miles away, George Eliot Hospital – 8 miles away or Warwick Hospital – 12 miles away. I had the option to book online or by phone. I excitedly logged onto the website and entered the required info only to find out that none of the hospitals have any appointments available!!! I called the number on the letter and spoke to a lovely guy who advised none of the hospitals had released any blocks of appointments to be booked by this method! He was just as frustrated as me. He advised that he can send my details to the hospital of my choice and they will send me an appointment letter within 2 weeks.I opted for University Hospital Coventry & Warwickshire, not just because it is the closest but because I trust them more than the other 2 hospitals. So the waiting game restarted. On the 19th of May I got a letter from the hospital to advise I was on the waiting list for an appointment!!! I hoped the consultant that reviewed my referral would give me an appointment ASAP. More waiting... Whilst waiting a bought a walking stick to not only help me walk with less pain but to also stop me hobbling like I'd got something shoved up my bum! I also got to thinking about my bad back. How over the last few years (or more) my back has gone through “phases” of being bad and then would be better again. Each time it would be slightly worse, I would take painkillers and just get on with my life. Maybe each time my disc was bulging a bit more until eventually it caused my current issues. Even if I had tried to do something about it before I honestly don’t think my GP would’ve referred me for further investigation if I had tried to press them to. They would’ve continued to prescribe painkillers until it had settled again. Do we always have to wait for things get so bad before we get them sorted? The NHS is so stretched that GPs will only refer cases that are really bad. Also GPs are charged for the referrals which doesn’t help, especially if they are penny-pinchers or financially stretched themselves. I also suffer from chronic sinusitis and allergic rhinitis, which means I suffer from loads of sinus infections and am allergic to everything airborne. It wasn’t until I was having back-to-back infections, affecting the left side of my face mainly, that the GP sent me for a CT scan. He actually made me say that I was in constant pain before he would do anything! I was told the results of the first scan showed that there was just a bit of fluid build up in my maxillary sinuses and everything else was ok. I saw a different GP about 3 infections later who looked at my first CT scan and then quickly sent me for another CT scan. Clearly the first GP had missed the actual problem. The second scan showed that I had a deviated septum blocking my left sinuses! One operation (Septoplasty) later I still have infections just not as often or as fierce. If the docs had sent me for a CT scan after the first couple of infections it may have saved me from a lot of suffering. Maybe if I had pushed my GP to investigate my back or they had instigated an investigation sooner it could’ve been caught earlier, I wouldn’t be where I am now, in constant pain despite the painkillers. Struggling to sleep. Struggling to walk, sit and lay down. Getting pain so bad it makes me feel sick and makes me feel hot and sweaty. Looking at an operation to fix the problem because it has potentially gone passed the point of being treated by physiotherapy. It took my brother paying for an appointment at a Chiropractors and my friend paying for a private MRI scan for me to find out what is wrong before mid-June! By which time I could’ve caused more/permanent damage as I have a habit of battling through and getting on with whatever I’m doing. “What if’s” are the most annoying thoughts! What if I had spoken out? What if the GP had done their job better? What if the NHS wasn’t in crisis? What if I hadn’t been so stoic? What if I hadn’t handled my pain so well? What if I had complained more? At least I was on the road to getting some treatment, even though the traffic was/is slow. On the 9th of May I called the hospital booking line, more out of boredom and impatience than anything else. The very nice gentleman I spoke to shocked me by advising that an appointment has been assigned to me. It’s for 10:20am on 31st of August 2017! I asked if there was a cancellations list I could join. He advised that they do not have a cancellations list but gave me the Neurosurgeon’s secretary’s phone number. I tried to call her but she’d already left for the day so I left her a voicemail message asking for a cancellation spot. On the 10th of May the letter confirming my appointment arrived. It was then a case of waiting for a cancellation. On the 15th of May I managed to speak to the Neurosurgeon’s secretary, she was lovely. Very helpful. I asked about being on a cancellations list and she said she would contact me when the next cancellation came up. She also advised that she’d look out for cancellations for the other consultants too. On the 16th of May I went to see my GP about my pain meds as they were not working. She was very angry that the locum had only put me on 300mg of Gabapentin per day at a previous appointment. She was also unimpressed that I was taking Paracetamol as well, she said “you are way past Paracetamol, they are only sweets for you!” I advised that I no longer wanted the Diazepam as I didn’t feel it did anything for me. So she removed the Diazepam, Paracetamol and increased my Gabapentin to 900mg per day. I also had a call from the consultants secretary asking if I could make weekend appointments. I told her I could, to get cancellations you need to be a flexible as possible. Then she asked if I could attend an appointment on Sunday at 9:20am! I was genuinely shocked. I nearly bit her hand off!! I can indeed I told her. Then she confirmed I’d be seeing the consultant at 9:20am on Sunday 18th of June! You could’ve knocked me over with a feather. I was so happy I cried. My original appointment was for 31st of August 2017. I was excited, a little nervous and over all relieved as I wanted the pain to be sorted ASAP. On the 18th of May my housemate came with me to my appointment as although I was ok about it on the Friday & Saturday, on the morning of the appointment I was a little anxious. We arrived 10 minutes early, we’d barely sat down in the waiting room when I was called through. I had downloaded a dictaphone app for my phone to record the appointment as I have them memory of a goldfish! I’d like to blame the painkillers but I’ve always been an “airhead”. I asked the consultant if I could record the appointment and his response was “go ahead dear”. He was lovely, very to the point but with a gentle manner. I instantly felt like I could trust him. There just seems to be something about him. He had read the MRI report I’d emailed to his secretary. The key points he said during the appointment were: “Nobody can give you a new back, nobody can give you a new disc and nobody can give you a new nerve.” “We can trim the disc to take the pressure off the nerve. It’s a repair not a cure. It carries risks.” “If the pain is getting better then don’t have the surgery, if it isn’t getting better or if it’s getting worse then think about having the surgery. Both having or not having the surgery carries the same risk of paralysis due to the pressure on your spinal cord.” “If you are happy to proceed with surgery it will be a L4/L5 decompression surgery and trim the disc. Again it is a repair not cure. Your back will always be problematic. If the nerves are too damaged it will not relieve the pain.” I opted for the surgery. My back is getting worse, I need some relief and it makes sense to try to take the pressure off the nerves. There is a chance surgery will help to relieve the pain. Not having the surgery will leave me in agony. I am now on his list. I’m not sure how long it will be before my surgery. The sooner I get this done the better. My pre-op is booked for the 4th of July but this in no way indicates when my surgery will be. In the meantime I need to manage the pain with painkillers which is proving to be a struggle. On an emotional level, I am both relieved and upset. I knew how bad it was but hearing it from a consultant makes it “real”. I’m relieved because I know what I’m facing longterm so now I can get my head down and get on with it. I am extremely lucky to have three close friends who have had similar surgeries and am a member of several support groups on Facebook. Along with family & friends I have plenty of support.
