Dodo (Dörte Clara Wolff) (1907 –1998) German
“Die Madonna der Strassenmädchen”-The Madonna of the Street GirlS 1933
From 1923 to 1926, Dörte Wolf, known as Dodo, trained as a costume designer and fashion graphic artist at the renowned Reimann School in Berlin-Schöneberg.
From 1927 to 1929 she draws Ulk for the Berlin entertainment newspaper. It is here that she develops her characteristic style: in clear outlines and bold colours, she depicts the glamorous life of the modern city dweller in a stylized exaggeration, as well as the increasing emancipation of the “new woman”. She prefers the gouache technique, a quick-drying medium that suits the fast-paced life in the metropolis.
Her style contains elements of Art Deco, but also of New Objectivity. A cool clarity and a shadow-free, neutral illumination can also be found in her works. In the present work she shows a naked woman, provocatively thrust her hips forward, hand raised as if preaching to her followers. The triangular structure is reminiscent of classic images of the Madonna
