The @icerosesummerbracket has dragged me back into ARoIiS, so I spent all day drawing art of my absolute favorite, Currant!

I was inspired by some of the hc designs I've seen in the fandom lately for both him and Etienne, but I really wanted to lean into the ARoIiS themes of light vs. dark with his outfit. Though I fear I might have leaned into them TOO much lmao. But I do enjoy the space/star aesthetic, so it's fine with me, just consider it an artistic liberty. I definitely did not know how to depict his magic tho lol.

Also! I wanted to give him lots of blue so he and Etienne could be a red-blue sibling duo :D

I do headcanon Currant as trans :) I mean, have you ever noticed how ARoIiS uses similar words to describe him and Etienne, but in a different light? (pun intended) You CANNOT tell me they aren't identical twins. And you know what that means! One of them has to be trans. I'm convinced Etienne did his top surgery somehow, and you cannot change my mind idc idc.

Honestly at this point I would take a spin-off that's just about Currant and Etienne, exploring their origins, their rocky relationship, and how they ended up taking different paths in life. That would be cool to see.

Also, how about both a Currantsweep and an Etiennesweep, so they can both face off each other in the finals, for further family drama? I know it's not gonna happen but I can dream ❤️

hey what's up everyone @icerosesummerbracket has gotten me obsessed again with a series i hadn't thought about for almost a DECADE, so, as the first post of this AROIIS sideblog, I used this picrew to make some of my FAVES... in order, Rose, Kivan, Chance, Etienne, and Currant!! sorry abt the picrew not having an eyepatch or anything similar for Rose. i hc Etienne and Currant as sharing pronouns in turns just like how they would share clothes if they had a more similar fashion sense, btw, if u even care. also i know Chance has purple hair for most of the series but i love ALL their hair colors equally and i chose the peachy pink one.

As a disclaimer, it's been years since I read the books, so this might be wildly inaccurate in places, idk, but I think I got the general vibes down! I feel like it ended up leaning more towards Etienne than Currant, haha, but it's still focused on their dynamic rather than just Etienne's personality or relationship with other chraracters. So I hope I managed to capture that!

I also really wanted to add Yin Yang from the Persona 4 anime but it's not in spotify so just imagine it's there :c

Am I the only one who ships Currant with the Chronicler? It's just, the way Currant talks about him when taking the kids to meet him for the first time... I mean, it could be just the author getting a little too wordy with exposition, but I think it's way cuter to imagine it's just Currant being enthusiastic as heck about The Chronicler. Like hey kids have you heard about my crush-- ahem this incredibly important person who is so wonderful and special and his smile lights up the room-- no, who's got this super amazing book of prophecies?..

Also funny that both of them wear glasses. Just saying you could get a lot of shippy scenarious out of that! Theyre both in the glasses store and they reach out for the same pair and their hands accidentally touch... Or that trope where characters accidentally put on each other's clothes except it's literally just their glasses...

also I haven't gotten to drawing yet but my headcanon design for Currant's clothing style is like. Gothic Lolita. it involves a lot of dark colors of course, and in aroiis that's a good thing. plus accents of blue, I love the red/blue siblings thing with Etienne being red and Currant being blue

Yk I originally read this series back in middle school and im now realizing that i totally missed a lot of stuff? For example, I thought that Rose&Lily reveal came out of nowhere, but actually now that I'm remembering it they had So Many narrative parallels with Currant&Etienne... Like how Etienne's core flaw is indifference, right, shes not evil she just doesn't care - and Rose at her worst moments also demonstrates the same flaw (like that time in book 4, yk what I mean). And then Currant and Lily, they both care So Much, but it ultimately puts them into those situations with impossible choices that break their hearts and-- oops got carried away. uh. sorry to meta in your bracket askbox! but gosh. i sure need to reread before the polls start huh

Man Currant and Etienne though... their story still makes me wanna cry even so many years later... their terrible early childhood... then being separated... meeting again as all-but-enemies... starting to work together but Etienne being super prickly with him... then The Reveal!!!!!....... ...and she tells him she'll always be mad at him but then goes home and! pulls out that bunny toy they used to share when they were little! that she kept all these years!!!! and hugs it!!!!! 😭😭😭😭😭 like please they are siblings... oh my god they are siblings.......

and they were SIBLINGS....

I've seen others mentioning their favorite scenes. Personally, mine's is when Etienne tells Currant to reflect on the fact that she's maybe not the bad twin of the two. The tension !

Also the way it clearly shifts how Currant views himself and his sister and how they're perceived by others... I think he knows he's far from perfect but he's usually always seems like the sweet and easy going one. Whereas Etienne has always been considered like a difficult kid (I think the books said something about her being punished a lot when they were small and Currant being praised for hard work and good will).

(Also the who's the good twin and who's the bad a question I've asked myself a few times as a twin myself, especially considering as media tend to use the evil/good dichotomy a lot with twin)

ooh yeah, I know Etienne only said that to get a rise out of him, but it still Hurt, you know

Currant has let go of what happened to them both in the past, but because Etienne can't let go and doesn't want to believe that she's wrong to hold onto it, she basically has to tell herself that Currant letting go is wrong, even though subconsciously she knows he's right.

And then the way that Etienne's words get to Currant because he knows he's not perfect and it almost makes him re-consider if letting go was right- and then there's how seeing how her words affected him actually helps Etienne start to snap out of it- gah there's just so much to that scene!

holy shit i haven’t thought about aroiis in years. i remember the weekend i discovered it and just consumed everything i could find over and over again. honestly, i probably still have currant’s monologue memorised. i am so glad to see someone covering it in a poll. hyperfixation here i come! time to not think about anything but this for the next while.

ok so I know 'I have a friend with problems. Please don't ask for details' has been memed to hell and back but y'know what, I'm gonna make Kivan AND Currant propaganda out of that scene. Points to Kivan for being that rare YA protagonist who actually asks an adult for help. Points to Currant for being a good enough mentor that KIVAN sees him as a trusted adult. Fuck it, points to Lux while we're at it, for Kivan wanting to help him in the first place! That loyalty had to come from somewhere!

and I love how when Currant does give his advice, even though we can't see inside his head you know he's thinking about his twin even if he doesn't mention her

Okay now that we have the submission form functioning, I am hear to propaganda for my guy Currant.

Currant was the man who managed to fully crack my egg so I might be a little biased. When I saw a gnc man in media being drawn and celebrated and written about, I realised that at least in part that was an expression of me and at least part of my gender.

His constant emphasis on his individuality especially as he and Entienne had to reconcile their unescapable connection that eventually culminated in that famous monologue is incredible. His unwavering self while he is still allowed to grow and learn and become more than he started out.

i also just love his unparalleled dryness and overtly practical manner. he is so done being pushed around by other people’s expectations and makes it loudly known. there is a reason he is my favourite.

He's so gender honestly <3
