AWP | Charcoal
Recolor of my 'hardwood' design with a few tweeks to make it look a bit more like charcoal. This was mostly done to test out roughness and ambient occlusion maps in cs2 and see what can be done with them.
Standard normal mapping was done on this as well. Nothing special with it except for the fact that I have to boost the strength of it before baking and using in cs2.
I like the roughness map because it lets certain parts shine. For this skin I have the darker parts running through the skin shiny, it gives certain parts of the skin something more to do and makes it look better in direct light.
I still have no idea what ambient occlusion maps do. I would assume its a way to darken parts of the skin in light, but I didn't see much of a different. So either it's not fully implemented yet or I'm doing something wrong (we all know the answer).
Also... the nodes.
Tumblr media
Go ahead and try and decipher this, not like I can parse anything from it.

Getting tired of the same old maps?
CS:GO features a plethora of iconic maps, but let’s face it.
It can be tedious to play the same maps over and over, especially if you’re on losing streak.
Thank God, for community made maps. Now, you’re probably asking, “What map should I choose?” Why only choose one, when there’s so many great ones?

another post about tf2 scammers
about a week ago i made a post about what types of tf2 specific scams are floating around steam, how to avoid them, and how to identify a scammer. a scammer literally just added me and to a newer player/steam user, their profile could come across as legit so i'd like to go through it and pick apart some of the red flags i look for when people like this add me on steam. hopefully it'll help some people lol idk
Tumblr media
this is the profile of the person that added me. it seems normal enough at first, they have a decent steam level and their profile is personalized with artwork and a background. they've also written a bit about their hobbies and favorite tf2 maps in their description. initially, i thought this person knew me from tf2's steam forum and added me from there, but i did some snooping around just to be safe.
Tumblr media
here is their full description. i know this might seem pretty normal, but for me personally descriptions like this are a red flag in my mind. the first part would be fine if they had any workshop submissions or had posted their work anywhere, but they haven't so it looks more like they just added some random hobbies specific to tf2 to make them look more legit. i've also never seen anybody list their favorite maps on their profile and in combination with everything else it just seems like they're trying to come across as more knowledgeable about the game than they actually are. this isn't enough to get me to block or report somebody immediately, but it does make me raise an eyebrow at least.
Tumblr media
next, i scroll down and i see what games they play/own. 7k hours in tf2 is mighty impressive, but there's another red flag here: these are the only games this person owns and has played, and they're both free to play. for someone who has been on steam since 2015 at the very least, you'd think they'd play more than just tf2 and csgo.
Tumblr media
another red flag is their friends list: there's only 8 people here. again, if they've been playing tf2 since 2015 as they claim, it means they'd have been on steam since then as well and most people would have a lot of people added in that time. (i've been on steam since 2014 and have 342 people added.) i know some people only like to add close friends or people they trust, but if this person added me out of nowhere and i've never spoken to them prior.
with all this in mind their profile is extremely suspicious, so at this point i've got a good hunch that they're a scammer. let's dig a bit deeper.
Tumblr media
private inventories are another red flag as i mentioned in my previous post about scams. you can see the trade history of some items using websites like backpack.tf, and because of this a lot of scammers will keep their inventories private to prevent people from seeing if their items were stolen from someone else. it also prevents you from seeing what they have if they're chatting to you about trading.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
this is an absolute dead giveaway. despite having 7k hours in tf2, they have absolutely no playtime on any of the classes. not only that, but every single one of their achievements were unlocked on the exact same day at the exact same time, which is impossible to do unless you're using an external program. it seems like this person used the program to unlock some achievements, then idled on the menu to inflate their hours on their profile. this is also why a lot of scammers won't have their stats visible; it's to prevent you from seeing if they actually play the game or not.
so yeah after seeing all this, i was 100% sure this was a scammer. here's them proving me right by doing the "we need you to play on/vote for our team there's money involved and we'll give you items" scam.
Tumblr media
when i'm talking to a scammer i like to pretend to be engaged in order to keep them engaged as well and waste their time a bit, and because of this there's another red flag to add to the heaps of them this guy already has: why would you add a heavy/sniper main and ask them to play soldier or scout, especially when soldier is their least played class? surely someone who is looking for teammates for a tournament where money is involved would also check the stats of the people they're supposed to be playing with.
Tumblr media
i sent them a couple more messages and they unfriended me shortly after. i've since blocked + reported them for scamming/phishing.

man i have complicated feelings about cs2
i think i get why they're replacing csgo entirely instead of making a new executable. they're presumably trying to avoid a smash brothers situation where the esports scene is split between multiple versions
but as a result they've basically nuked a bunch of stuff overnight. as far as i can tell, csgo maps do not run in cs2. so the csgo workshop is still active- and it's where clicking 'workshop' on cs2 in your steam library sends you!- but you are subscribing to maps you cannot play. the video game that will run them is no longer accessible. i sometimes archive levels locally if i want to preserve them, because shit disappears from the steam workshop all the time, but now the game that will play them no longer exists. garrysmod might be able to handle them but i think csgo levels generally require manual porting to gmod because they were already on a newer version of source
they've apparently provided some kind of conversion tool for recompiling maps for the new engine (this seems like it would probably work just fine, based on what i know about source 2 and its level format, which granted is not much). but presumably a map has to still have an author who has the time and gives enough of a fuck to convert it. there are an awful lot of maps that are just going to be lost forever now. and i think! that sucks!
lost media is still lost media even if it's some asshole's crude recreation of a penis in bsp brushes textured with shrek!!! we're already losing tons of weird shit people make on the internet all the time and imo weird shit somebody made on the internet still has value even if it's not professional quality or 'high art'. this reminds me of when they released a warcraft 3 patch years later to fix some kind of security vulnerability and it broke nearly every custom map, long after anyone would have cared to go back and edit their levels to work. is the loss of Mafa Queen TD and Shopping Maul on par with burning the library of alexandria? no, but it still sucks ass
idk i'm typing this through vaccine/flu shot fog so this is super incoherent and i don't have all the details. maybe things aren't as bleak as it looks. but this is exactly the kind of shit that bums me out and it sucks that i guess they didn't plan for this

i sunk four thousand hours and hundreds of dollars into team fortress 2. i'm not gonna sit back and do nothing as valve ignores it further. crates are now filled with cosmetics from the steam workshop themed dartboard. the head miscs can't even be unusual and the only workaround was using ugly full head items and a bug to wear multiple effects.
the skins aren't there for new things to look at theyre there to add more money to valve's wallet. skins are only good in factory new and you want one with a strange counter, so guess what? you're either paying a shitload or gambling and paying a shitload anyway. the skins are picked out by a nonce with no sense for what makes tf2 tf2. this is still better than what the hats
new maps went from one or two maps that an entire update would center around to adding like 10 of the bastards at random because they needed another source of money in the form of map stamps that nobody buys. and there's always the maps that make you wonder if the valve guy tested the map. or even looked at it in the case of wutville.
i watched as weapon skins replaced adding new weapons. i watched as that same update ruined crates forever both with their picks and the rarity system. i had to look on in horror as mid your match was released and added a fuckload of maps that were popular for 6v6 as they fucked that up beyond measure. they added sunshine and fucked everything else.
we were wondering what valve was doing with a thumb in their ass for the year following that, and we didn't like the new halloween maps because ICS was a mapmaker on one. then jungle inferno came out and we were saying that the big update is yearly now.
and then a year came and went
and another
and another
and another
and another
and another
and ANOTHER
and we're on the 8th year of no major updates. and we've gotten fuck all. we've gotten a guy picking items blindly and the maps have become just another THING to add, and there's nothing. we've seen two entire feature length films made in source filmmaker, which is so famously bad with tf2 stuff. we've seen how much the dedicated fans love the game. and we get neglected because csgo needed to be fucked up to match with tf2 and what's next? gotta fuck up dota 2 on top?
the game is completely dead and a graveyard for non-bots on their official servers. contracts and their rewards are pretty much dead now. the only thing we have to play on are uncle dane's tryhard servers for people that scream at new players, bad players, or people not taking the game as seriously as a bomb threat. and all the fun is gone. and if there's a single sniper player on their team then it's just like what casual is like now.
valve managed to have given csgo enough changes such that when the source code was leaked that's a pretty big difference from what we have. we're still on the same major update. we're still on jungle inferno. the version that was leaked and the version we have are only differentiated by how many artstyle breaking hats and war paints and dogshit maps there are.
MODERN TF2 PLAYERS, WE USED TO HAVE A CONSISTENT UPDATE CYCLE. BIG SUMMER UPDATE. BIGGER HALLOWEEN UPDATE. END OF YEAR GAME REBALANCE. EVERY YEAR FROM 2008 ALL THE WAY TO 2015.

Still absolutely goddamned furious that Valve managed to get away with Weapon conditions so not only do you have to gamble real money but whatever you get is statistically likely to look like absolute dogshit like how the fuck is this acceptable like imagine playing a gatcha game and your pulls have a 80% chance to have their character portraits to have varying degrees of wear and tear ranging from "a few creases" to "absolutely impossible to see the portrait becuase of the rips, tears and dried jizz stains" I mean this shits just downright disrespectful like you don't GET new skins you gotta pay for the chance to fish them out of the dumpster. Even the fucking Gun Mettle comic was were the mercs went from "The best mercenaries money could buy" to "a bunch of useless idiots who quite frankly don't even DESERVE CSGO weapon skins"
Maybe it really is time to let the game die, Valve has gotten way more money out of it than they rightfully deserve at this point. Like enjoying this game after all these years and so much developer mishandling requires pushing so much shit to the back of my mind that it's exhausting. It is FUCKING HORRENDOUS just how little work seems to actually go into this game vs how much money it makes, and that's WHY Valve has left it to fester, becuase all they have to really do is pull entirely random shit from the workshop every fee months and call its half-ass implementation into the game an "update" and everyone, including MY dumb ass will continue giving them our money becuase we refuse to accept that the days of hopping on a server full of friends is long gone after Valve purposely starved out every vanilla community server.
I cannot express how much it hurts me to have seen all the fun of late 2000s Steam slowly be sucked out and the communities I used to cherish the time I had with slowly die out, and I hate how the standard practice for the gaming industry in general for the past decade has been "Implement shitty practices until they become standard"

sure “tf2 never dies lol” jokes are funny but like. the game literally did die, its just that the game itself died long before the players were willing to give it up.
I feel like everyone likes to give tf2 a gold star for being kind of lesser known and unique and less copy and paste than the popular first person shooters of today, or just for being less “cringe” by being a bit edgier and more masculine…
But LMAO, its like people want to forget what a shitshow it was. Blizzard has kind of trumped everyone with this OW2 PVE nonsense for pulling the worst fast one over on their fans, but like. Dude, the microtransactions in TF2 were causing people to gamble thousands on loot crates, like really tf2 and csgo got that shit started long before fortnite and others… and $100 in game wedding rings lmfao. The comics being abandoned, updates being abandoned, absolutely no moderation system, scammers, bots taking over the entire game and making public servers pretty much unplayable (thats one of the biggest to me, like holy shit). Random crits, some arguably very poorly balanced weapons, very long afk kick times, master spies being impossible to play against, extremely poorly balanced matches, autobalance, the only healer in the game being so unfun to play that you’re lucky to even have one on the team.
I mean, what made it so great and memorable was the very fact that it was a lawless, free for all game but thats also what made it terrible. And like I said, the players didn’t want to abandon it but like… valve pretty much did years and years ago. They were smart to at least expand item updates w workshop items to allow the community to keep making its own content, but like. Cmon. Tf2 is one of the OG, classic examples of a gaming company abandoning its players and the game becoming a shell of its former self.

I'm back to making skins.
I got into the CS2 beta in that first big wave. After a few days of playing (it feels good) I realized that workshop tools are released. It took a little bit to understand the new workflow, but I think I have it nailed down at this point.
The lighting just looks way better so any skin looks better. CS2 also supports higher quality textures which helps as well. The biggest addition though is a roughness map. The roughness map affects how light shines off the weapon. Before this was constant across the entire texture, but now with it as its own texture.
I've kinda had an idea for this skin for a while. Only now with the cs2 tools being released did I finally solve some important problems to get it looking better. It still has a lot of problems whough. It's far too yellow when it should be more red, and I need to figure out a way to get some greys into the texture that look good. The design is based off of charcoal and right now it looks nothing like charcoal.
I also need a name, but that is always a problem with whatever I make. Any sugestions is always appreciated.
But fixes are always ment for tomorrow. Now it is time for bed.

also i think i've discovered the cause of dirty window disease and a bunch of other weird texture mishaps. those are Black Mesa assets. the devs have supposedly asked that the game not be supported by garrysmod as a mountable source game. (this is totally within their right; i mostly get it, even if it's mildly annoying. though i feel like the end result is worse in terms of IP rights tbh)
however, they're nice assets! and a lot of them are fairly unlike assets in portal, hl2, csgo, etc. so people want to use them in their maps. if the game were mountable they could just say 'you need to own and mount Black Mesa to see this map properly'. but it's not. so instead they rip all the models/textures out, dump them into their gmod installation, and include them with the map
except pouring the assets from 20 different games into the same namespace causes fucking problems. because the people who made one game had no reason to make sure they used different filenames from assets in a completely different game unless they were literally borrowing them. (l4d copy-pastes a bunch of counterstrike source assets, frex) so if you have multiple content files with the same name garrysmod just picks one, and im not entirely sure how it decides which, but experience suggests it's base hl2 content -> mounted games in load order -> workshop content, from lowest to highest priority. you'll actually have problems with this solely by mounting tf2. it shares a few texture names with hl2, so some maps will randomly have painterly tf2 textures in them
so anyway you sub to a map that used a bunch of black mesa content, it loads after all of your mounted content, and now your glass looks dirty, your doors look weirdly industrial, your explosive barrels are higher-res, you have this insane water closet door texture with the silhouette of a child on it, DR>BREENS PRIVATE RESERVE is now a purple 'Rutta Grape' machine, etc
and yes i did find this out by upending gigabytes of black mesa assets into my gmod directory without making a backup, turbofucking my entire life
