Going beyond the prescribed: A true story of UPL’s CSR

In 2013, India created history by making CSR mandatory for all companies above a certain size. 2% of average profits of the past three years for corporations are to be spent on helping the community. This set the direction for CSR to evolve from a passion to a department in many corporations. With goals defined and money spent wisely, this combination of empathy and action has caused a visible difference to the millions it has touched.

Every corporation has different ways of deciding on how they spend their 2% and whether they spend only 2%. A recent India CSR report of the BSE Big 370 companies has highlighted that over 4176 CSR projects were implemented by these companies in the year 2016-17 and 1/3rd of the companies spent more than the prescribed budget.

Why do companies do more than prescribed?

For certain companies like UPL, CSR is in their DNA. Much before it was made mandatory, these corporate fulfilled their duties of being a responsible corporate citizens.

UPL’s CSR Journey to beyond Compliance

It was during the foundation of UPL’s very first factory at the GIDC in Vapi, Gujarat that Mrs. Sandra Shroff realized the need of the local community who had no access to proper medical or educational facilities. This was back in 1969 and the ball of UPL’s CSR was set rolling then. From a medical facility to a school, then a college to a full-fledged Sarus Crane Conservation Project today, every year UPL’s contribution to the community is only increasing.

In 2016-17 as per the India CSR report, UPL has spent over INR 23.8 crores on CSR while the prescribed was just INR 4.9 crores, that’s 3.5 times more than the prescribed amount. UPL’s CSR annual report 2016-17 highlights the multiple initiatives – ecological, health and sanitation, medical, educational, employability and agricultural that were undertaken.

In fact, UPL’s CSR has reached overseas too with Brazil’s Complementary Education Programme and various other community development programmes undertaken in countries where they are present.

Fostering a ‘Culture of Caring’

 UPL’s CSR is not limited to company-led initiatives only. Encouraged to care and commit to a cause, it is no surprise that UPL’s employees undertake their own social initiatives under the ‘WAU – We are United’ banner. In addition, there is also UPL CSR Internship that is offered to students. These efforts to make CSR an all-inclusive activity have made UPL a beacon of hope for many around the globe.
