Let's say you were peer pressured into reading a series of books when you were a young teen, and now you're an adult and you still have said books in your home. And you don't want to donate them or offer them on your local buy nothing group because someone might read the fucking things. And you're a thrifty/broke/environmentally conscious person, so the idea of just throwing them in the garbage without at least trying to repurpose the material is...well, really, that's the reason they're still in your home.
Before the weather hit I had a long day of Continuing Adult Education about gardening including horticulture and entomology and botany and plant pathology and soils and COMPOSTING
The composting teacher was a very cool butch who picked me and one other person to demonstrate starting a small vermicompost bin. And I got to take it home!
Someone asked me if I was going to name the worms and I came up with so many ideas for worm squads and vermicompost bin labels that I can't possibly use them all. Here are some I'm NOT using, for your inspiration:
My worms will be arriving by friday!! Around 500 red wrigglers!!! Hoping they survive and do well. If I plan it right, I can set up an indoor worm bin in the basement t to keep composting over the winter, and then I can transfer the worms back outside when it warms up so I won't have to keep ordering them each year.
The only thing is I will have more kitchen waste going to the trash probably bc they'll need a more exact ratio in the indoor bin but that's okay.
Tbh I'm already thinking about expanding to a large sterilite or Rubbermaid storage container for the outside worm bin next year. There's enough room for it by the garden and we'd be able to compost so much more.
Today I took the scraps out to the compost and put damp cardboard on top. I'll hold off adding anymore to it until the worms arrive and allow what's there to decompose a bit so they can hit eight to work.

Gettin’ hot & steamy in the garden 😏 . Usually when I flip the pile—& sift a couple wheelbarrowfulls of black gold—I don’t have enough new greens & browns to really get it going. More like a bigass vermicompost pile 🪱 . But after Spring weeding, & with hella bags of coffee & a pile of redwood chips, I got this cube o’ compost really cookin’! . Don’t worry—the worms will wiggle to the edges & then dive back in after it cools down 🤓👍 . Also fired up the compost tea brewer with my diy aerator—plants love those magical microbes! . #HotWetAndSteamy #IfYouCantStandTheHeatThenGetOutOfTheCompost #CompostCooking #FlippingThePile #BlackGold #Compost #堆肥 #Composting #Vermicompost #HotCompost #CompostTea #BeneficialMicrobes #NorCal #Zone9bGardening #Zone9b #Permaculture https://www.instagram.com/p/CdBjOlopcEQ/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
