Nine others died in the August 23 plane crash that reportedly killed Yevgeny Prigozhin, the mercenary leader who staged a brief mutiny against Russia’s Defense Ministry in late June. Prigozhin’s death isn’t verified yet, but Russia’s Federal Air Transport Agency has confirmed that he was on the passenger list. The other high-profile passenger aboard the doomed flight was Dmitry Utkin, the Wagner Group commander whose callsign is the basis for the company’s very name. Journalists at BBC Russian and the Dossier Center collected information about the other passengers and crew members who perished in the crash. Meduza summarizes these reports.

Passengers

Valery Chekalov

Chekalov managed multiple companies in St. Petersburg that were linked to Prigozhin. BBC Russia learned that his acquaintances logged his number in their phones as “Valery Evgenievich Syria,” “Valery Chekalov Concord Army,” and “Valery Evgenievich Chekalov from Prigozhin.” From 2011 to 2018, he headed the company “Kollektiv-Servis,” which won a contract with the Defense Ministry’s Commissary in 2012 to supply food to the army. Around the same time, the company registered an entity with a mess hall in Sevastopol, the home of Russia’s Black Sea Fleet.

Chekalov also managed a company created in 2014 called “Neva,” which operated the subsidiary “Evro Polis” — the same Evro Polis that signed a memorandum with the Syrian government in 2016 to recapture and guard oil facilities in exchange for the value of 25 percent of the oil and gas produced there, according to reporting by the news outlet Fontanka.

Evgeny Makaryan

Born in Magnitogorsk, Makaryan was a former police officer. According to the Dossier Center, he joined Wagner Group in March 2016, serving in its fourth assault detachment in Syria, where he was wounded. BBC Russian calls him one of Prigozhin’s bodyguards.

Sergey Propustin

Propustin is listed at Myrotvorets, the Ukrainian website that names and sometimes doxxes people its authors consider to be “enemies of Ukraine.” Myrotvorets identifies him as a grenadier reconnaissance officer and Wagner Group fighter. According to the Dossier Center, Propustin fought in the Second Chechen War. He reportedly joined Wagner in March 2015 and fought in its second reconnaissance assault detachment, from which Prigozhin would later recruit several of his personal bodyguards. Accordingly, BBC Russian reports that Propustin was another Prigozhin bodyguard.

Alexander Totmin

Myrotvorets lists Totmin too. It’s unknown when he started working for Prigozhin, but journalists learned that he was living in St. Petersburg as recently as 2022. His phone number shows up in shared databases identified as “Sanya Work PMC,” “Totmin Sanya Kontora Piter,” and “Alexander W.” In August 2012, a court in the Altai Krai sentenced him to 300 hours of community service for stealing a chainsaw from a bathhouse located on someone else’s property. In September 2014, he was sentenced to two years of probation for car theft.

Nikolai Matuseev

Researchers at the Dossier Center believe that the Nikolai Matuseev listed among the plane-crash passengers is the same one who joined Wagner Group in January 2017. He was a gunner in the organization’s fourth assault detachment in Syria.

Crew

Rustam Karimov

The aircraft’s 29-year-old second pilot, Karimov lived with his wife in Perm. He graduated from the Sasovo Flight School in Russia’s Ryazan region in 2014. Karimov’s father told reporters that his son was unemployed at the start of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine. He says Rustam found work three months ago with MNT-Aero, the company that owns the crashed plane, and then moved to St. Petersburg.

Alexey Levshin

Levshin was the plane’s captain. His daughter Anastasia told the news outlet RBC that her father had worked with Prigozhin for many years, though she provided no further details. BBC Russian discovered that Levshin was featured in a 2018 broadcast by the television network Vesti Novosibirsk about an airshow that included military pilots. In the story, he was identified as the navigator of a Sukhoi Su-34 crew.

Kristina Raspopova

Raspopova was the plane’s flight attendant. Thirty-nine years old, she was born in what is now Kazakhstan. According to the news outlet 74.ru, her younger brother is the deputy prosecutor in Yemanzhelinsk, a city in Russia’s Chelyabinsk region. She attended the Moscow Finance and Law University and lived for some time in Yekaterinburg before moving to Moscow. The Telegram channel Baza reports that she relocated to St. Petersburg after finding a job at MNT-Aero.

Posts on social media indicate that Raspopova often traveled abroad, sharing photos from Jamaica, Singapore, Austria, and other countries. Multiple times, she flew aboard a business jet similar to the plane that crashed: an Embraer Legacy with the tail number RA-02857 based at Vnukovo International Airport, which she frequented. According to Baza, Raspopova spoke to her family a few hours before her final flight departed and said that the plane had been delayed for some reason.

We’re all agreed Vurg and Beau are like an old married couple, right? but who is going to write their slowburn romance of the century, featuring a poor, pining, Vurg, hopelessly in love with his best friend Luke?

His oblivious, married best friend. His best friend who he’d follow to the ends of the earth. He has resigned himself to loving, but never being loved in return, and that’s ok. Really, it is. But then he does follow him to the ends of the earth, or almost anyway. They go on a long sea voyage together, to avenge the death of Luke’s wife. His lovely, beautiful wife, who had always been so kind to Vurg. Looking back on it, she’d probably known, something about the pain in her eyes when she looked at him, the way she’d always try to include him in things, but really that just made it worse. He should have left. As soon as Luke had gotten married, he should have packed his things and left. He’d planned on doing so, but then Luke had pulled him aside, asked him to be godfather, and thanked him for being by his side for all these years... and he couldn’t go. He couldn’t. So he stayed. He stayed and stayed and stayed and watched as his friend was so very happy. With his wife, and his child, and he couldn’t hate them. As much as he wanted to, he couldn’t bring himself to hate any of them. And then the vermin came, and Luke’s family fell apart. Sanya was dead. Martin was motherless, and Luke needed Vurg’s help.

Then they went after him, together. They packed up and set out to avenge the death of the woman who was the cause of all Vurg’s sorrow. Vurg knew it wasn’t good to think like that, but he would. Late at night when he was alone on watch or in his bunk, he’d allow himself to feel his grief, his anger at the injustice of the world, and then when he was done he’d tell himself all the right things. He’d say that she was a lovely person, and that she’d always been kind to him, and that it wasn’t her fault, it wasn’t anyone’s fault, and that at the very least, Luke had been happy. That part was never as cathartic as the wallowing though.

Vurg never harbored any ideas of getting Luke for himself after Sanya’s death though. He knew Luke too well for that. He knew he would carry the weight of the dead until he himself passed, and would probably never love another. All Vurg could do was be there for his best friend, and so be there he did.

Then, they’d met Beau. Beau was the very definition of hollow legs, and happened to be covered in rags when they first met. In short, he was absolutely bonkers, even for a hare. Vurg couldn’t help but be fascinated by him, at first in an “I wonder what on earth he’ll do next” sort of way, and then in a more companionable way. Beau was thrown overboard. Vurg hadn’t known he had become so very fond of the hare until he went missing. It felt like there was a massive hole in the crew. Vurg found that he was constantly aware of where Beau wasn’t.

Things changed after the slaughter. Half of the crew died, the rest got captured, and Vurg was thrown overboard. He was found by the not dead Beau, and after almost braining each other, Vurg hugged and kissed the hare unashamedly. Vurg almost felt bad for feeliing as happy as he did, given that they were in the midst of burying their friends. He was happy though, happy as anything, and he kept reaching out to touch Beau to make sure he was still there.

They went after the slave ship of course, on a raft made of plants pulled by a sea lion. As there was no rowing to be done, they had a lot of time to talk on that raft, and despite his constant chattering, Beau was a good listener. He soon had Vurg telling him all about Luke, and their life before Vilu Daskar and the Goreleech, and halfway through, Vurg could see in Beau’s eyes that he knew. Apparently Vurg was not very discreet, but seeing as Beau already knew, Vurg told him the whole story. It felt good to talk about for once, and Beau really cared. He didn’t say much for once, but Vurg could see in his eyes that he felt Vurg’s pain with him. He took Vurg’s paw in his, looked him in the eyes, and told him that he next time they saw Luke, after they’d rescued him of course, he was going to kick him in the shins. Vurg protested but Beau stated that anyone who couldn’t see that their best friend was in pain for so long deserved a reality check, a violent one.

Vurg was quite unexpectedly overcome, and he felt tears in his eyes. He was about to thank Beau when their sea lion escort surfaced, and he felt the irrational urge to tell him to go away, that he was interrupting something.

After that, it didn’t hurt as much. Vurg felt strangely more at peace with himself, and Beau the absolute madcap ninny, made him happy in a way he hadn’t felt in a long time. It was during Beau’s first stint as a wild sea monster, that Vurg realised he might possibly be in love with the hare. That idiot, brilliant, outrageous hare, who had the audacity to haunt vermin in their own ship, steal their food, and then feed it to the slaves. Definitely in love with him. Verg contemplated this revelation as he sat alone under a dripping sailcloth on deck. He would not be rash. Getting over Luke was good. Falling in love with one’s companion while being a stowaway on a ship? Bad. Very bad. He could not afford to get distracted. On the other hand... life was short, they were probably going to die soon anyway...

Orders were passed, and the plaintiff submitted a list of rogue websites that are still using unauthorized platforms for leaked movies. Mr Rao, the plaintiff in the case, requested the court that he has not signed any contract or agreement nor issued any transmission, distribution, or broadcasting of the film until today. He is the producer of the film and, therefore, holds the copyright and is entitled to injunctive relief. - Hon’ble Justice C Hari Shankar passed the interim order in favour of the plaintiff. Defendants 6 to 40, the other online platforms, were directed by the court to block and take down access to the film court order until the hearing on 07 July. - In response to the lawsuit, the Delhi High Court has issued an interim order in favour of Red Chillies Entertainment. The order mandates the immediate removal of leaked clips from social media platforms and directs internet service providers to block access to websites that offer downloading of copyrighted content from the movie. The interim order aims to safeguard the movie's intellectual property rights and prevent any further damage to the company's commercial interests. Despite the setbacks caused by unauthorized leaks, the excitement surrounding Jawan's release on June 2, 2023, continues to grow. Just curious, but how fortified is the kitchen when Sanya is cooking?

Well, it started out as normal kitchen.

Then he needed to install some carnifex-proof things, because Lady was constantly dropping by to much on ingredients. Specifically meat and strangely cabbages.

Then he needed to make sure that People Banned From Kitchen will be kept away, so doors were needed. Shanakay is always eager to help, but god forbid anyone without at least astartes-grade resistances to poisons and various mind-altering spices will try it.

Then doors were fortified to keep Abaddon from eating half-done food. Well, in an attempt to accomplish it. It haven't quite worked. Needs more fortifications.

Then there were also things installed to keep pesky daemons away from the kitchen appliances. Oona was very unhappy to find out her favourite bbq spatula was stolen by snickering screamer.

Rare beaked whale sighting could be a world first for the species

On a calm, cloudy morning in May 2019, a lookout on a research vessel lowered his binoculars and shouted, “Beaked whales! Beaked whales!” As Massimiliano Rosso, one of the scientists aboard, recalls it, the research crew sprang into action, focusing nervously on their assigned tasks of photographing the whales, recording video, scribbling observations, and timing the animals’ breaths and dives.

“You know you have very little time and probably won’t have any other chances to get the data,” said Rosso, a marine biologist at the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Sanya, China.

Rosso and a team of researchers from the academy were looking for rare beaked whales in the South China Sea, 300 kilometers (nearly 200 miles) from the island of Hainan. After reviewing their photos, they realized they had possibly recorded the first ever live sighting of the ginkgo-toothed beaked whale (Mesoplodon ginkgodens), or the first live sighting of the nearly identical Deraniyagala’s beaked whale (Mesoplodon hotaula) in the western Pacific Ocean.

“I have spent the last 20 years carrying out research on beaked whales,” Rosso said. “But I still get excited every time I spot one.”

Beaked whales make up around 25% of known cetaceans, which include all whales and dolphins, yet their lifestyles preclude people from easily studying them. Only 4 to 5 meters (13 to 16 feet) long, beaked whales often forage hundreds to thousands of miles from coastlines, and one species, the Cuvier’s beaked whale (Ziphius cavirostris), is the world’s deepest diver, with a record of 2,992 meters (9,816 feet). Looking for these animals with binoculars from a boat requires careful strategy and a bit of luck, as the whales spend little time at the sea surface.

Nevertheless, these mysterious cetaceans made headlines in recent months: the Cuvier’s beaked whale broke another world record, for the longest dive on a single breath (nearly four hours); several rare species washed ashore in Northern Europe; and scientists may have discovered a new species off the Pacific coast of Mexico. In December, the IUCN updated nearly all beaked whale listings, moving some species from “data deficient” to “endangered” or “least concern.”

The IUCN still lists M. ginkgodens and M. hotaula as data deficient because researchers have learned about them mainly by studying dead specimens stranded on beaches. In their report, the researchers noted one previous, unconfirmed sighting of a mother and calf, believed to be M. hotaula, swimming near Palmyra Atoll in the middle of the Pacific in 2007. M. ginkgodens has yet to be seen alive, they added.

Rosso and the other scientists on the boat initially spotted three beaked whales, but only two lingered for them to observe, for about 50 minutes. The pair took multiple shallow dives in sync before filling their lungs to make one final deep dive, disappearing below the waves. The team identified the whales as a male and a female of different ages, based on their teeth and the number of circular scars on their bodies created by cookie-cutter sharks (Isistius spp.). The scientists also collected data on the animals’ body measurements, diving behavior and coloration, they reported last month in Integrative Zoology.

“It’s really, really rare to have a sighting as good as this of any beaked whale species,” said Jay Barlow, a senior scientist and beaked whale expert at the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) in California, who was not involved in the report. “It’s more detail than I’m used to seeing in a sighting report,” he added.

The scientists also observed that both whales had a dent in different spots on their upper “lips,” a feature previously reported on live whales injured by fishing gear. According to the report, four out of the last five stranded ginkgo-toothed and Deraniyagala’s beaked whale carcasses that scientists examined showed evidence of interaction with fishing gear or marine debris. “Urgent ecological info like baseline data on their distribution, stock size and population structure are urgently needed in order to assess their conservation status,” Rosso said.

To strengthen their identification of the two beaked whales they observed, the researchers compared their data to photographs of a handful of individuals of the two species that have washed ashore in the past. Their detailed descriptions of the dorsal fin, beak and head will help future identifications of these animals at sea. But because the scientists could not collect DNA samples from the whales, they concede that their species identification isn’t ironclad.

Barlow said he wished the authors had been able to deploy acoustic recorders in the water to get a sample of the whales’ echolocations. “That might have been diagnostic,” he said, noting that other scientists have already recorded Deraniyagala’s beaked whale songs in the wild. “They spend a lot more time vocalizing than they spend at the surface,” he said. Barlow, a member of the team that recently discovered the probable new beaked whale species off Mexico, said recordings of those whales played a large role in their identification.

Despite the uncertain identification, Rosso said he was delighted at the experience. “Often beaked whales are described as very shy animals,” he told Mongabay, “but I find such a description to be wrong.” Unperturbed by boats and people, the beaked whales in the South China Sea were “just focused on their business,” he said. This gives Rosso hope that future research cruises will succeed in spotting beaked whales in the region, provided their populations remain stable under the growing pressures of marine debris, ship traffic and climate change.

“Some would say that you shouldn’t be publishing on an unidentified species if it can’t be identified to the species level,” Barlow said. “But that’s how we learn — by little bits and pieces, so I applaud them for publishing this work.”
