When I committed to being mindful (my word of the year) about balance in my life this year I was serious. I knew juggling life and art meant choosing when to step away and when to dig in and bury myself deeper into the practice of art. But life happens and then life collides with art practice and the studio explodes into a million little piles of paper and paint and threads. When I’m working on a lot of projects at one time I’m OK with the mess, but then out of nowhere it hits me and I have this powerful need to tidy it all up and start from scratch. Sometimes that need comes in the middle of a project, and it seems counterproductive to clean it all up just to keep working but it’s how my brain is hard wired. Today was one of those days. I tidied and dusted and packed away half finished projects. Tomorrow I’ll start again and it will feel good and refreshing and I will feel happy about my work space. There are some days when tidying the studio just feels so good. With so many projects in the works it’s easy to get lost in the sweet chaos of the messes these days. There used to be a time when I couldn’t walk away from a mess like that, so it feels good to take a step back and not let it consume me. I still like things tidy but it no longer consumes me. Today I began the post holiday process of tidying and dusting. I can’t quite let go of all things Christmas yet so my studio table has become a landing place for things as I move and shuffle things around. I’m caught between feelings of anxiety over the clutter and love for the hodgepodge of color and texture that these piles have brought to the art studio. Tomorrow I’ll finish and it will feel settling to see the room transformed back into the organized space it usually (and mostly) is for me. And just like that my word of the year manifests itself and becomes clear to me. Reclaim. I envision 2023 being a year of many subtle shifts and changes and I’m excited to see how this one single word helps me evolve as I reclaim spaces, moments, ideas, feelings and more in the new year. Do you have a word of the year picked out for 2023? I spent a great deal of time choosing my word for 2022 and it was the first time in many years I stayed true to a word so fully. I enjoy having several different art journals in a rotation. I am always surprised to discover which one I am drawn to, which one I might feel compelled to pick up, paint in. For me, making art isn’t about always having a plan, but instead is more about having faith in my instincts. Most days I am pulled toward one journal over another and have learned to embrace the process over the plan. Each day the subtle differences in page size and texture offer me a challenge but also the excitement that comes with the unexpected.
