Beginning and Intermediate Watercolor Workshops, Craftcation Conference 2017
This was my first year teaching not one but 3 watercolor workshops at Craftcation Conference. I am normally managing the PopUp Shop, which after 5 years has become somewhat of a child to me.
The presenter who was supposed to teach both the Beginning and Intermediate Watercolor workshops was not able to come and Nicole and Delilah -the mavens behind Craftcation (and Patchworkshow) asked if I wouldn’t mind stepping in. I already teach watercolor and dye workshops at The Makery Craft Co. in Orange County so it was something I could help out with.

The workshops were split into two days - Beginning and Intermediate Watercolor were back to back on Thursday, Craftcation’s first big day. And on Friday was a second session of the same Intermediate Watercolor workshop.
For the beginning watercolor, I taught the attendees the color wheel and how to mix color using only the three primary colors. This was a bit daunting for me as well as a student when I first started painting and I’m happy to say, that all the attendees faired FAR better than I did (too much paint, too little water) my first time. :D

I also taught a basic techniques such as washes and using fun household supplies like salt and plastic wrap to manipulate watercolor.

Mallory, one of the attendees, who also happened to be a presenter painting this amazing abstract piece using the techniques I taught. I always love seeing what my students come up with.

For the Intermediate Watercolor, I thought light and shadow using gemstones. I chose to do that because I feel gemstones resonate to everyone not just in a metaphysical level but alway because...well, they’re pretty.

Aren't these two amazing?! <3

I am partial to free-flowing watery brushwork. This lady felt it challenging to her, but I think her work was great! You can see her progression as she worked through each painting. My fave is the green gemstone.

And that’s not saying I don’t like figurative painting as well. That is a whole other level of amazing. And there were A LOT of really good ones like this one!  It’s that I’m not very good at making figurative art -only occasionally when I am really in the zone.
I really enjoyed teaching this year. It showed me another side to Craftcation that I only heard of from shoppers before who were visiting the PopUp. I met so many great people, got to interact more with other staff -they are my friends outside of Craftcation- on a work basis and just got to get out of the PopUp shop, which I normally don’t get to do. Hoping there will be a next time!

Craftcation 2017: Flexing Underused Creativity Muscles
Check out what I did this weekend at #Craftcation! My creativity muscles are swoll now. 🎨
I attended the 2017 Craftcation Conference with my wife this weekend. While this was mostly to help her with hew new sewing business, there were some cool art workshops where I got to try out techniques I normally don’t use. Since I went 100% digital for cartooning back around 2010, I barely even pick up a pen or pencil unless at conventions. This helped me flex my creativity muscles and taught…

Craftcation 2017
Tumblr media
I’m sitting in a hotel bar, eating some tacos, and drinking a very lovely beer.  I just finished my last event at Craftcation 2017, and this is my time to process, defuse, and “come down” from the creative and learning high I’ve been on for the past four days. I’m watching attendees huddle in the lobby, hugging, laughing, and saying tearful, reluctant goodbyes.  Even the hotel staff seem to be a…
