New COVID Variant
XBB.1.16 (ARCTURUS) IS ON THE RISE WORLDWIDE. The new variant is highly contagious. Today we look at the new COVID variant and one striking symptom you should know about. First, a quick look at Shakespeare’s take on pandemics. While he lived over four centuries ago, Shakespeare’s words still ring true, even regarding today’s global coronavirus pandemic. At his birth in 1564, the playwright’s…

Mayo Clinic
April 13, 2023
While COVID-19 rates in the U.S. are relatively low and are declining, the World Health Organization (WHO) is keeping an eye on a new COVID-19 variant. The omicron subvariant XBB.1.16, known as "Arcturus," has been listed by the WHO as a variant under monitoring since March 22. Experts say this variant has a higher transmissibility rate than previous strains but doesn't appear to be more dangerous.
"It is causing increasing case counts in certain parts of the world, including India. We're not seeing high rates of XBB.1.16 yet in the United States, but it may become more prominent in coming weeks," says Dr. Matthew Binnicker, director of the Clinical Virology Laboratory at Mayo Clinic.
He says experts are seeing new symptoms with the new variant.
"One new feature of cases caused by this variant is that it seems to be causing conjunctivitis, or red and itchy eyes, in young patients. This is not something that we've seen with prior strains of the virus," Dr. Binnicker adds.

Respiratory rates declining
Dr. Binnicker says respiratory viruses, including COVID-19 infections, influenza, and RSV have declined in the U.S. in recent weeks.
"The case counts of respiratory infections have begun to drop as we're entering into the spring months in the Northern Hemisphere with warmer temperatures and people getting outdoors," says Dr. Binnicker. "Respiratory viruses, like SARS-CoV-2, tend to decline in the spring and summer months, and that is what we're seeing in most parts of the U.S. right now."
SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, keeps emerging because the virus mutates and copies itself as it spreads from person to person, creating new variants.
"New variants come and go. We're seeing increased transmission rates, so higher levels of infectivity with recent COVID-19 variants, but in general, they tend to be causing less severe disease in individuals, which is good news," explains Dr. Binnicker. "This is likely due to a combination of factors, including higher vaccination rates, higher rates of immunity from prior infection, and lower pathogenicity of recent variants."
Although COVID-19 rates in the U.S. are relatively low, health experts recommend people remain vigilant in using these preventive measures:
Wash your hands frequently.
Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
Stay home if you feel sick or have any symptoms of COVID-19.

Mokdad said that XBB.1.16 is gaining ground on the previously dominant strain in the U.S., called XBB.1.5. ...
“It can’t be spreading so fast unless it has some immune escape,” Mokdad said. The virus has two ways of surviving, Mokdad said. One way is to be more infectious and evade immunity from previous infections or vaccinations, “which this one is doing,” he said. The other one is to become really deadly. “We haven’t seen that yet.”
...
Some news reports have mentioned that XBB.1.16 infection causes a “new” symptom — conjunctivitis, or pink eye — though the WHO noted that this symptom was already known to be associated with Covid. As early as the spring of 2020 there were reports of itchy, sore eyes in Covid patients. In May 2020, the American Academy of Ophthalmologists noted that mild conjunctivitis could be a symptom of Covid.
I'm still wearing my mask. And I keep a reusable mask in my purse in case I forget to refill my N95. "But Thom. The cloth masks don't work as well." Well, random reader that's so concerned for my health. A cloth mask is better than no mask.
Also, it's allergy season and the masks protect be from allergens. When my allergies get bad I'm more prone to infections.

(note: tumblr fucking ate my original answer to this, I think because the video I tried to upload was too large or glitchy? So i've just included a link to it instead.)
ah, glad you asked!! that's what I thought too, but then I saw this video made by an ear/nose/throat surgeon demonstrating how to swab your nose correctly for a more accurate covid test, and I (nervously) tried it that way, and lo and behold it did not hurt at all!! I post this video on my ig like once every few months because it's so helpful and a lot of people aren't aware that just swabbing your nostrils can lead to false negative rapid test results.
For the most accurate covid rapid test results, you should always swab your nasal mucosa/nasal cavity, AS WELL AS your throat, cheeks, roof of mouth, and possibly your eye gunk, since the Arcturus variant appears to particularly affect the eyes!!

First case of Arcturus reported in Brazil
Tumblr media
São Paulo's Municipal Health Secretariat reported this week the first case of variant XBB.1.16 of Covid-19, also known as Arcturus in a 75-year-old man, bedridden and with comorbidities, who presented the symptoms of influenza syndrome and persistent fever on April 7.
According to the secretariat, the patient was transferred to a private hospital in São Paulo for medical attention and was discharged on April 27. Despite being fully vaccinated against Covid-19, including the Pfizer bivalent dose, the elderly man was diagnosed with the Arcturus variant.
The World Health Organization (WHO) is currently monitoring the Arcturus variant as a variant of interest. So far, there has been no evidence of increased severity or rise in the number of cases in São Paulo. However, the variant has been associated with symptoms such as eye irritation (similar to conjunctivitis), dry cough, and febrile episodes, the Municipal Health Secretariat noted.

today in Harry Sullivan thoughts:
there's a new incredibly contagious Covid variant called Arcturus (please wear masks!) I may have left Catholicism behind, but not my occasional impulse to invoke saints of expertise when faced with a crisis far far bigger than I am.
anyway here's Wonderwall

Woke up with pinkeye, a runny nose, headache, and a cough. Positive for Covid... the first positive test I've taken since the start of the pandemic (though I think I had it before, as my sense of smell has been shot for months). Apparently pinkeye is a new symptom of the Arcturus variant. Fun!
My mom, in all her wisdom, asked "I wonder where you got Covid?" It's certainly a baffling question, but I'd hazard a guess that it was from one of the two elementary schools at which I work. Or perhaps the sold-out Hozier concert at Madison Square Garden I went to recently.
The pandemic isn't over, y'all. Triple-vaxxed, though, so fingers crossed it won't get worse.
In meantime... what better to do than write? ;) My new fic is almost entirely done - Chapters 1 and 2 complete, Chapter 3 95% complete, and Chapter 4 95% complete. I have yet to write Chapter 5, but it's outlined; the once-weekly updates should allow me to finish on time. Next chapter on Friday of Cold Inside!
