CORE4 (코어4) is a south-korean co-ed group under SM Entertainment, previously signed with P NATION & Stellar Entertainment. CORE4 is the first sub-group of the co-ed project UNIVERSE-4. the lineup consists of 4 members: AJ, HYEWON, EUNWOO and SAKURA. CORE4 debuted on april 4th, 2018 under Stellar Entertainment with the mini album READY FOR IMPACT. the group would later become best known for their genre experimentation and high performance quality.

SAKURA is a former competitive dancer with multiple national titles from both the united states & united kingdom. she began dancing at the age of 4, respectively.

first widely recognized as a replacement of the originals to the season 3 team on the american television show, dance moms, SAKURA made her reality TV debut in 2013. lee did not return to the show for season 4 due to her former company only planning to promote her for one season, and so she could continue training in south korea.

in 2021, SAKURA became an official licensed choreographer under P NATION, right before CORE4 participated on kingdom: legendary war. lee was also revealed to be one of the permanent choreographers for the SM girl group, aespa, on the same day.

in 2019, SAKURA went on hiatus for mental & psychological health reasons for 3.5 months due to former mistreatment along with untreated traumatic experiences.

lee is highly recognized in her home country. she made her first appearance as a mentor on the survival show, little mix: the search. she is constantly brought up on the list of celebrities who should participate on strictly come dancing in future seasons. primarily, she’s known for her hard work and influence.

on june 20, 2021, HYEWON and SAKURA made their unit debut with the LP "ENTERTAINER."

SAKURA has been dating YUNHO of ATEEZ since december 2018, they went public on february 2021.

EUNWOO trained for a total of 8 years, he began his trainee journey in 2011 & has the longest training period in CORE4.

all of CORE4 are multilingual, but he tops the members by being fluent in almost four languages and is currently learning a fifth. his native language is korean, but it was also tradition amongst his siblings to learn english.

he’s known SAKURA the longest, they met in 2012 when she joined STELLAR ENTERTAINMENT because she could speak very little korean at the time but was fluent in english with a thick foreign accent that was difficult to translate.

in episode 3 of CORE4’s docu-series, "the secret diaries" (air date: february 14, 2022) EUNWOO publicly came out as bisexual; he also admitted that his parents no longer support him, and that both of his sisters are all he has left besides his members’ families.

EUNWOO is related to LOTTIE KIM of BTS, this was revealed in 2022 during CORE4’s docu-series titled "the secret diaries" and was kept from the public for quite some time due to EUNWOO being a rookie. EUNWOO is the youngest out of three siblings: LOTTIE is the middle child and they have an older sister.

EUNWOO was in a private relationship with SEONGHWA from ATEEZ for nearly a year.

he wanted to become a trainee because of LOTTIE, she is his biggest inspiration. when they were kids, they would sing together out in public and that’s how they got scouted by different agencies.

EUNWOO is known to be the mood maker of CORE4, he often goes viral for his mischievous behavior and amusing antics.

HYEWON is known for her deep voice, visuals, and connections with many different idols in the industry. but out of all of those, she’s most famous for her high-speed rapping skills and intensive participation in the musical production process overall.

before training to debut with a co-ed group, HYEWON was an original member (her positions were the main vocalist & leader) of the ITZY lineup under JYP, a girl group that debuted in 2019. she left because she felt like she didn’t fit their age range or the standards of girl groups.

RAIN BECAME A P NATION TRAINEE IN AUGUST 2020 AFTER PREVIOUSLY TRAINING UNDER STELLAR ENTERTAINMENT, CORE4’S ORIGINAL LABEL, FOR 6 YEARS. seongwoo, the youngest trainee (who would later be known as kai) had no clue who rain was until they were paired up for monthly evaluations. but rain, on the other hand, was told so much about the boy to know that he was an evaluation away from being put on the final lineup — and so was she.

but despite the age gaps, they spent so much time together and decided that if they would be debuting together in the future, they might as well befriend each other.

“noona, why are we getting tea after dance?” kai questioned as rain set down the milk tea he had shyly asked for just moments ago in front of him at the cafe booth. “because, silly, your vocal chords will thank you later… you should really work on your singing some more, you know? you’re so close to becoming better than eunwoo!” rain teased, a small laugh left her lips when the younger boy’s face went red, “in all honesty, i think you’re on the brink of having a very powerful voice… i’d be damned if you’re not the first pick.”

“you mean it?” “kai, i’ve always been honest with you.”

kai’s eyes sparkled with a glimmering hope, one that rain saw in herself when she looked in the mirror every night before bed. “you know… i’m glad i left YG, i’m not used to having so many people believe in me like this.” he shyly admitted, eyes darting to his phone that had just lit up with a text notification from who rain assumed to be his friend sunwoo, who she’d met a few weeks ago after he was picking up kai from rehearsals.

“does your boyfriend believe in you?” rain softly asked, nodding towards the boy who held kai on his lock-screen as she took a sip of her hot tea, grabbing kai’s attention from her use of the word ‘boyfriend.’ who (in the photo) was sunwoo from sapphire (@sopphre).

“i… i mean he’s just—”

“—just a friend? yeah right, and do pigs fly?” rain sarcastically asked in a playfully tone, reaching across the table to gently lift kai’s chin that was lowered to look down at his hands back up with her index finger. “kai, i’m not gonna shame you for loving someone of the same gender, okay? i think you two are quite adorable together, your eyes light up whenever he takes you home from practice, i’m not a fool… and if this is the boy from sapphire, i feel in my gut that he’s been on your side since the beginning.” rain told the younger boy, slightly scolding him for thinking she wouldn’t be supportive of him.

and later that day, rain got an exciting phone call from kai that he’d not just been added to the lineup — but also that he thinks she’s next.

SITTING HERE, WITH NOBODY ELSE BUT THE CAMERA CREW, DO YOU THINK YOU WOULD ENDURE ALL OF YOUR HARDSHIPS FROM THE LAST THREE YEARS AGAIN JUST TO GET TO WHERE YOU ARE, RIGHT NOW?

“truthfully, on one hand, i don’t think i’d go back in time and do it all over again… i was just a kid for most of the hardest points of my life so far, sometimes i still can’t process the fact that i’m still here… i know i’d find a way back to my members. but on the other, i get to live my dreams every day… i debuted when i was only eighteen years old, and i’ve been chasing my dreams since i was four. i’ve been through so much that i quite like the woman that i’ve become, i think she turned out okay.”

WHEN WERE YOU AT YOUR LOWEST AND HIGHEST POINT IN LIFE, SO FAR?

“i was nineteen when i was at my lowest, but somehow i met the right people and from nineteen up to this point, it’s also become the best time, somehow? it’s strange… if it weren’t for the people i’m surrounded by today, i can’t say i would still be here.”

DO YOU REGRET DEBUTING AS A SOLOIST WHILST STILL BEING A ROOKIE?

“absolutely. i wasn’t ready to be a soloist at nineteen, maybe this past year would’ve been a smarter and safer option for me instead. as both a group member, preparing for a solo debut is a type of burden that i couldn’t even begin to try to explain to the viewers… i fully regret having my solo debut at the time that i did, and i’m no longer afraid to talk about everything i’ve been through.”

DO YOU REGRET GETTING INTO A RELATIONSHIP WITH YOUR CURRENT PARTNER AT THE TIME IN WHICH YOU DID?

“no, because when i was starting to fall apart… we quite literally came together. i felt like i lost all of my armor and strength, he still stood beside me and i’ve done the same for him over the course of the last four years. i was really scared to be in a relationship with the kind of mental state that i was in back then, but when you genuinely love someone, you’d go through hell and high water for and with them. i couldn’t have gotten to where i am now without him and the kind of heart that he has. why else would we express how much we care for each other so publicly?”

IN 2020, YOU TRIED TO TAKE LEGAL ACTION AGAINST STELLAR ENTERTAINMENT, BUT THE CASE WAS ABANDONED SOMEWHERE DOWN THE LINE. WHAT WENT WRONG?

“i can’t say a lot about this, but what i can say is that i had multiple witnesses and a great deal of evidence as well. the court denied my case because all of my witnesses had ‘too much of a personal connection to the defendant.’ i’ve never met a group of people so money-hungry… it breaks my heart into a million pieces to see people with that company, still. i’ve tried all i can do.”

LAST QUESTION, WHAT DOES YOUR LIFE FOR THE NEXT FOUR YEARS LOOK LIKE?

“CORE4 is definitely still in the picture for me, i’m also hoping that i still get to shift more of my focus on aespa, too. the girls are absolutely lovely, it’s an honor to choreograph and watch them grow. but for me, i see myself slowing down a little bit, as well. i’ve always wanted to be a mum, i grew up with my own as my biggest role model… so the consideration alone for that path is definitely in the cards. if not, then i’d mainly like to be in better contact with my family, it’s very hard to stay in touch with everyone because my life is so busy.”

THE STAFF MEMBER NOW BIDS SAKURA GOODBYE BEFORE DEPARTING FROM THE CAMERA, LEAVING SAKURA ALONE IN THE FRAME TO ANSWER THE FINAL QUESTION:

YOU WENT ON HIATUS FOR SEVERAL MONTHS AT THE END OF 2018 FOR YOUR MENTAL HEALTH. WHAT WAS GOING ON AT THAT TIME? WHAT MADE YOU GET TO THAT POINT? DID THINGS GET BETTER? WHAT ADVICE CAN YOU GIVE TO VIEWERS AT HOME?

sakura’s nerves kicked in after she finished reading the question to herself. she planned out her answer in the dressing rooms earlier this morning, but was it even enough? the truth is what would be enough. she knew it, too.

“for the sake of my own health and privacy, i can’t get too descriptive on certain things, so i do apologize for that. back when we debuted, someone invaded our privacy late at night and my former company made false promises as a response. it really traumatized me. so much that i developed a fear of sleeping and being alone, i was getting the same nightmares from that situation over and over again. naturally, my lack of sleep led to my anxiety getting worse, and so did my performance at work. i’ll never forget the day before i spoke to psy for help in regards to it: eunwoo was so worried for me that he cried when i was struggling in practice.”

“even after we had joined our new company, i was still struggling. this was something that felt so psychologically advanced, that therapy eventually wasn’t enough as a solution. fortunately, i received endless support from my P NATION family and friends from the moment i had mentioned getting treatment. everyone was very encouraging, so when i left seoul for a few months to go to a treatment center near the city, i was finally on the right track.”

“i’m very lucky that i got the kind of help that i did, because i got the right resources and i was back home by late september of 2019. since my treatment, i’ve been better than ever. but truth be told, it would have never worked on me if i never believed that there was even a light at the end of the tunnel in the first place… now, i live with my boyfriend of four years, i live my dreams every day with my favorite people in the entire world, and i’m doing it because i found the strength and love in myself to get better… so i could be here, in this very moment. my best advice for anyone struggling with anything at all is that asking for help does not make you weak… it’s the first step. i promise you, it’s not something to be ashamed of.”

sakura had been talking so much that she had lost track of her emotions, she sat on the cushioned seat with tears brimming in her eyes — her skin was ghost pale from mentioning the past, but her eyes told a different story. her eyes shed tears of relief. relief that she was still here. they were tears of joy, and three years later, lee chaerin finally felt like she had set herself free by sharing the truth.

warnings: descriptions of nightmare disorder + somniphobia (fear of sleeping), & mentions of mental illness and loss

earlier in the day, eunwoo approached yunho and explained that he was getting worried about sakura and her well-being because she had been showing up to rehearsals incredibly sleep-deprived for the last few months. yunho promised his girlfriend’s best friend that he would try to be there for her… however she needed him.

he knew that the demons she was fighting in her head was something he wasn’t meant to take care of — she was meant to overcome it, but this kind of battle of hers was becoming too difficult to go through alone.

and ever since they started dating, yunho was determined to hold her through her worst — which, in this very moment, he kept his word.

since she debuted, the nineteen year old had developed a fear of sleeping due to constant nightmares of hers that became reality — and the trigger was when a saesang followed her and AJ home from practice back when they were promoting a year ago, banging on the front door of their dorm all night long.

and the worst part of it all? empty promises of protection were made, which further resulted in sakura having constant nightmares ever since. now, she’s been refusing to sleep, and nearly passed out during dance practice earlier that day which is when the worries of her members only increased.

it was two in the morning, and although hongjoong protested at first, he caved and let yunho stay with sakura after finishing an early schedule, and now she had snuck from the comfort of her bedroom to the kitchen to try to stop her eyelids from getting heavy.

she couldn’t sleep. she absolutely couldn’t and wouldn’t.

the girl had been doing so much to try to help herself fight her fear: buying a white-noise machine to make her apartment less quiet, leaving the lights on outside her room, keeping a solid sleep schedule and healthy diet, getting locks on her doors to ease her anxiety, the list goes on and on.

some days it worked, but tonight she couldn’t get herself to sleep — better yet, close her eyes for more than five seconds.

there were times when yunho needed her love and comfort, but lately sakura needed it more than he knew he could ever understand.

so he held her body close to him from behind as she stared with eyes pried open rather emotionlessly at the hands that have been protecting her from her fears for so many months now. yunho’s head gently rested on the shoulders of his troubled partner, her growing disorder and fears were only making her mental health worse, and the thought of her only feeling lower since they got together made his eyes brim with tears. was he not protecting her properly? holding her tight enough?

sakura was certain that she numb to everything but yunho, who finally felt the fears of losing sakura to herself settle into his soul. he grew more & more afraid that she wouldn’t realize how painful everything was… until it was too late.

so he kept the lights on the in the kitchen, the white-noise machine drowning out his soft sniffles that were failed attempts to keep his tears at bay.

but she heard them, and she didn’t know what to do.

today, the CORE4 member & choreographer celebrates her 22ND birthday with her P NATION family! going live shortly after the clock stroke twelve in the US, she received many birthday wishes over the phone from her friends in ATEEZ, THE BOYZ, and STRAY KIDS. CORE4, JESSI, her mentor, HYUNA, and her boyfriend, YUNHO, stopped by to visit her in-person while broadcasting on V LIVE! GALAXY, did you wish SAKURA a happy birthday?

with her boyfriend staying the night and helping her through another episode, sakura ended up finally getting a little more rest than what she could typically get by when alone. but just one successful (even though she slept for less than a few hours) night still didn’t take away from the fact that the young rookie was still struggling immensely.

and after experiencing for herself that both eunwoo and yunho got emotional yesterday from seeing her in this current mental state, sakura was finally taking the next big step: asking for help from her company. part of her was afraid to say something to psy, she knew in her heart that he would find a way to get her help; but the last time she was in this position, she was declined the ability to get the right resources. so by now, the girl was more than desperate to simply feel like herself again… she was even willing to make a decision that she hoped she’d never have to make. sakura had even gone to her members to tell them about what she hoping to walk out of the meeting with their CEO with, not wanting to make the same mistake that was made the last time that a hiatus for another member was spoken into existence.

and when psy and sakura had a personal meeting that was planned in advance, they changed the original intended topic at hand the second that they sat at psy’s desk — he instantly caught on that something wasn’t right.

“why don’t you tell me what’s on your mind?” psy started, observing his most youngest idol under his company, “we can discuss your professional dance training another time, your manager has expressed that your health conditions have worsened since you started at P NATION.”

“it’s not about P NATION at all, i can’t see myself at any other company… it’s more of me struggling to deal with the side effects of how STELLAR treated me previously, i know you’re more than aware of everything my team and i experienced.” sakura hesitantly replied, her hands clasped together so her CEO wouldn’t be able to notice her trembling hands.

“our first release under P NATION has been our best comeback so far and i see us getting even better with the team you have us working alongside. except mentally, i’m not even in the right place to continue doing this currently.” sakura started explaining, fighting back the overwhelming weight on her chest, “i want to continue my journey with P NATION; but right now i feel like i need to focus more on getting in a better, healthier state. i’d like to get resources, whether it be therapy or some other kind of treatment, and maybe take a temporary hiatus so i can focus on it, too.”

“i’ve been worn out for months now, and my nightmare disorder is just making my anxiety and work ethic worse. i’ve even tried so many different safe methods before coming to meet with you today, just so i can fully say that i’ve done all i can do in my power.” sakura continued on, even her strained and exhausted voice had given away the fact that she was far from a healthy state, but ultimately: she just looked done, “and if providing me even the smallest portion of guidance or resources isn’t in the cards, i don’t think i can continue as a performer at all, which is the last thing i ever want to decide on… but it’s a choice i wouldn’t hesitate to make.”

“you should know that you leaving us is the last decision i want to make as well, miss lee.” psy responded, leaning forward in his office chair to rest his hands on his desk, sharing his current thoughts out loud, “your group came here with the main demand to remain as a quartet, you’re not just an asset to them but also to the company. you have many gifts, so rather than letting them go to waste by you quitting indefinitely, here’s what i think the plan should be:”

“first and foremost, let’s have you take that extended hiatus before anything else occurs. i want to have CORE4’s next comeback to be pushed back until you’re ready. a trio release doesn’t seem appropriate, nor do i think your members would be fond of doing it. instead, i’ll have the others utilize this time to improve, network, adjust, and more.” psy spoke, carefully sharing his plan for the idol in front of him as it was developing, “i can also provide you the access to connections with people who can help, so this would be your turn to decide which resources best fit your needs. once the process starts, the P NATION team and i will make it a priority to consistently check and monitor your progress. we’ll get you back on track, so i encourage you to try to push aside your past company relationships and welcome my own. you gave me your demands, and this was one of them. as i said before, you’re an asset to this company, now.”
