Wednesday
Wednesday would be Birnam's birthday and Cord came home that day with great news. He was promoted to Junior Officer!
Birnam brought a friend home from school, but before he spend some time with Penelope, he had an important call to do.
Birnam: Is Holly available? Here's her little brother.
There was a crackling in the line and some seconds later Birnam heard his elder sister say his name.
Birnam: Holly! Finally I found you! You know that it's my birthday today. And it's my only wish, that you'll be there.
Holly: B, you know Dad would never allow that.
Birnam: It's my only wish. I'm sure Dad will allow it! I'll also talk to Mom if you want me to.
Holly: *sigh* Okay: But just for your birthday...
Said and done, Birnam hurried to his mother and told her, Holly would come over for his birthday. Cherry was shocked but also excited. She hadn't see her daughter in days. When she saw her on the front porch, she headed her off.
Cherry: Holly, my dear, I'm so glad to see you. How is the community center?
Holly: I'm only here for Birnam's birthday Mom. I know you don't agree with Dad, but you also don't disagree with him, so you're just as guilty as he is.
Cherry: Is that what Ms Voyante tells you?
Holly: I have a mind of my own, Mom.
Cherry *sigh*: Okay hun, but just look that you don't get under your father's eye.
But it was already too late, the second Cherry finished that sentence, the door opened and Cord entered the hallway.
Cord: Holly! What the heck are YOU doing here?
Holly: It's my little brother's birthday, Sargent. He invited my for his party.
Cord *grumble*: I'll allow you in my house for this one evening, because it's Birnam's birthday. But I want you out by 9 PM and don't try anything funky, young Lady.
Holly: Yeah, yeah, whatever. Can I see B now?
Holly really hated the person that was meant to be her father. She hated being in this house. She hated that her mother went to the living room and opened another bottle of whine to drown her sorrow in alcohol. She was only there for Birnam. And she was glad that Ash was at work...
Holly watched Birnam and Penelope play for a while until it was time to blow out the candles.
Birnam grew up well and became a Pleasure Sim. In fact he's influenced more by his elder sister than his father would like as he likes Sims with a bit of a rebellious background and those that know how to work with their hands. He doesn't like beards but he does like boys - girls and boys in fact. He also grows up to be quite the Party Animal. Let's see how Cord would react to this...
The birthday boy spends a pleasant evening with Penelope and Holly until his father thinks it's time for everyone to get lost.
Cord: Okay, that was enough for one day. Birnam was happy, but now get away from my land.
Holly: You'll regret this Sargent. You'll lose everyone around you, one day. Just you wait!
Cord just frowned at Holly's curses. He would never lose anybody. He had Cherry and Cherry would always be there. And where Cherry was, the kids were. It was just that simple...

If You Can't Take the Heat, Don't Lie Beneath the Wood Stove
If You Can’t Take the Heat, Don’t Lie Beneath the Wood Stove
There are three introductory phrases I begin sentences with that truly define who I am:
The First—I can’t believe I have to repeat this, but …
The Second—If you truly want my opinion …
And the Third—When I was growing up in Wisconsin …
It’s the third, well-practiced utterance that we shall focus on today, as I feel this introductory remark is cemented in my daily speech and appears as often…

“ ‘Steal’ Is Alleged in Sale Of Wood,” Toronto Star. May 19, 1932. Page 1.
----
Fuel Cut for Needy Reported Sold
----
North Bay, May 19. - “It’s a straight steal - no doubt about it,’ said J. T. McDougall, crown timber agent at North Bay, at the close of an investigation into the sale by North Bay city of 150 cords of charity fuel wood to the northern development branch for use at trans-Canada highway camps. The arrangement was carried through, according to sworn documents in the investigator’s hands, by Mayor Richardson, Alderman W. G. Buttbrook, and George Lafleur at Ferris.
Mr. Lafleur testified he paid $600 to the city treasurer under the arrangement, and in exchange received $800 from the northern development branch.

One log at a time
How do you stack 10 face cords of firewood? To paraphrase an old joke: One log at a time..
Actually, it's the perfect kind of work to do if you want to rest your brain. Mindless, but satisfying. Productive, too. And, as a bonus, you get a pretty good upper-body workout out of it.
You just insert your earbuds, fire up your playlist, grab a wheelbarrow and get stacking.
If I sound like Tom Sawyer trying to convince Sharon that stacking firewood is fun, that's unnecessary. She did most of what you see here, and is damn good at it.
Neither wind, nor rain, nor gravity threaten Sharon's stacks.

Monday
Cord knew that his wife was going through a difficult phase. She didn't want to move Holly over to the Group House. When would she finally understand that this was the only possibility for a girl like her? She wasn't like the watcher wanted her to be. She was full of sin and would drag their youngest Brinam into her sinful behaviors too, if she continued to live with them. When would she finally understand?
Cherry knew that Cord was right, he was always right. But Holly was her baby... her beautiful little baby girl...
Ash hated how he was dragged into all of this. His dad said that Holly wasn't normal and that she couldn't live with them because of it. But he was so confused. So confused that he needed to write everything down. When Dad found out he would be mad, so he hid the notebook under Holly's bed.
Cherry hated how Cord always invited all those people over. Everyone but Holly...
And that night the family got another setback: The results of Ash's college applications came in - and weren't satisfying. He was declined from all three universities.
Esmee: Listen boy, going to college is totally overrated. Back in MY youth, nobody went to college, believe me...
When the guests finally left, Cherry felt like she couldn't breath anymore. She just - she just needed something to calm her nerves. She knew Cord hated it but he was upstairs fixing a broken sink. He wouldn't see her wouldn't notice. Just one quick sip and she'd be okay again, right?
Three glasses later Cord's cutting voice threw Cherry off.
Cord: Cherry! You told me you wouldn't drink anymore! Di- did you empty half of the bottle while I was upstairs? Cherry, that was half an hour? Have you even though about the boys? Do you want that kind of mother for them? Set such a horrible example for them.
No, Cherry didn't want to be a horrible example. But she just couldn't help it...
