Fucking finally finished Cold Steel 4. I've been sitting on it for like a year at least but it's done. Like damn.

I dated Emma becyase the game won't let me date Crow even though Rean is mad crushing on Crow every 5 seconds but whatever Emma is pretty rad to so.

Cold Steel IV Thoughts

Tried my hardest to push through Cold Steel 4, but the padding, lame reveals, bonding events and all the *mostly unvoiced* texts that were just nothing conversations really killed my enjoyment of this game.

As these games become larger & larger it gets harder to justify the build up and padding, especially in an arc four games in. I’d be fine with this if the gameplay to story loop was better structured, it doesn’t have to be perfect, but Kiseki is more focused on telling a story & their structure has gotten stale at this point. These really should be 40 to 60 hour games with less text & buildup. We can still get good characters & politics without everything being so slow.

I can also go on about how the bonding events fumbled a lot of character dynamics in the service of increasing Rean’s harem, I can also mention how the Osborne’s true motivations ruins everything about him, or that it feels like there was really no stakes in the game outside of a few moments. I really don’t know what went wrong with Falcom for this arc...

I don’t complete hate this game, since we get to see characters from across the entire series team up, but that wasn’t enough to stop this from being a massive slog.

The Erebonian’ Trails arc becomes much better if, instead of worrying yourself with the whole “Rean’s harem problem” and whatever ship war may have come from there, you forget about all that jazz and just see Class VII; both og and new, as what they are: The funniest found family ever to exist.
