Police in southern Alberta are being investigated after a restaurant worker in a Star Wars stormtrooper costume who was carrying a plastic gun was forced to the ground and ended up with a bloody nose.
“All the signs say 'Star Wars.’ The music that was playing in the parking lot was Star Wars," said Brad Whalen, owner of the Coco Vanilla Galactic Cantina in Lethbridge.
“If a duck’s a duck, it’s a duck, right. It should have been common sense and it should have stopped there.”
Mr. Whalen said the 19-year-old employee of the Star Wars-themed restaurant had agreed to carry a toy blaster and wear the elaborate white uniform of the soldier of the Galactic Empire to get the attention of people celebrating May 4. The day is popular among fans of the movie franchise because of the famous line, “may the force be with you.”

An employee at a Star Wars-themed restaurant  had a memorable May the Fourth, after her costumed celebration and replica weapon drew the attention of police and ended with her nose bloodied. Now, the chief of police is calling for an investigation into the actions of the responding officers after video of the arrest surfaced.
While dressed as a stormtrooper, Ashley, 19, went into the parking lot of the Coco Vanilla Galactic Cantina in Lethbridge at the direction of her manager. She danced with blaster in hand on May the Fourth — the day fans celebrate the film franchise as a play on the iconic "May the force be with you" line.
Lethbridge Police Service arrived with guns drawn and the stormtrooper dropped the plastic toy to the ground.
"Apparently a couple of people had called 911 and said that there was somebody with a gun on 13 Street N.," said Brad Whalen, the restaurant's owner. "A number of police officers had shown up to our business with guns drawn on our employee."
Whalen says Ashley suffered a bloody nose after she was tackled to the ground by officers and handcuffed.
All those jokes about Trudeau being Castro’s lovechild might not be shitposts after all.

Teen Girl In Stormtrooper Costume Held At Gunpoint by Police
An employee at a Star Wars-themed restaurant in Canada was held at gunpoint while wearing a stormtrooper costume after police mistook her plastic blaster for a weapon. The 19-year-old had been told by her employers at Coco Vanilla Galactic Cantina in Lethbridge, Canada, to wear the costume to celebrate Star Wars Day.

Video
youtube
its actually real
May the fourth turned out to be an unlucky day for one “Star Wars” enthusiast dressed as a stormtrooper from the sci-fi franchise, when police responded with guns drawn to two 911 calls about her.
Now police in Lethbridge, Alta. say they’ve launched a service investigation into the actions of the officers who responded on Monday morning.
A video circulating on YouTube shows a person dressed as a “Star Wars” stormtrooper in front of a business called Coco Vanilla Galactic Cantina. The person recording the video asks the costumed person to do a dance.
However, the video takes a serious turn at around the 35-second mark, when we see several police cruisers parked with their sirens flashing. Officers can be seen pointed their guns at the stormtrooper and heard saying “Get on the ground.”
The person in the costume gets on her knees and police arrest her. Someone saying “Are you serious?” and a woman sobbing can be heard. Police then kneel and speak with the trooper after her helmet is taken off.
May 4 has become a day for “Star Wars” fans to indulge in their love of the franchise owing to the aural similarity of the phrase “May the fourth” and “May the force be with you,” a well-remembered bit of dialogue from the first film.
According to local police, they responded to two 911 calls reporting someone in a stormtrooper gear carrying a firearm in the area at around 11 a.m. They say when they arrived, the person dropped the weapon — which they confirmed to be fake — but did not comply with police to get on the ground right away.
The woman in the costume was an employee promoting a local business, police say. She suffered a minor injury but did not need medical attention and was not charged.
After reviewing the incident and the video, Lethbridge police Chief Scott Woods is calling for a service investigation into whether the officers acted appropriately and within the scope of their training, police policies and procedures.
The police news release notes police have received a “number of public comments and inquiries” about the incident. They say a public update will be provided after the investigation is completed and reviewed.

Police pull guns on restaurant employee dressed as a Stormtrooper
Tumblr media
Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada: A couple of idiots called 911 on a person dressed up as a stormtrooper because the person was holding a (fake) gun as part of the costume.
During “Star Wars Day” (May 04), as part of a promotion for a Star Wars themed restaurant called ‘Coco Vanilla Galactic Cantina’, owner Brad Whalen allowed his employee (a 19-year old female) to don his $1200 Stormtrooper costume and stand outside to drum up some business from passersby.
Tumblr media
When police showed up they surrounded her, telling her to drop the “gun”, which she did promptly. Then they told her to get on the ground, which was difficult to do because of the costume (and which would have been obvious to the police), prompting the police to falsely claim that she “failed to immediately comply with police instructions”.
In a video, the owner, Whalen, can be seen in the doorway of his restaurant telling the police that the gun was fake; the police ignored his comment and told him to go back inside. The person taking the video also tried to tell the police they were overreacting (they ignored him as well and told him to back away).
Tumblr media
The police caused a “minor injury” to the employee (it appears to have been a bloody nose), and you can hear the employee crying as they handcuff her.
When a video of the incident was posted on social media, the employee received support from an unlikely and surprising source: Actor William Shatner (of Star Trek fame; Star Wars fans and Star Trek fans are usually at odds).  Mr. Shatner chastised the Alberta Police Department for handling the situation so poorly.  He also brought attention to the fact that the very same police department once killed a deer sitting on the road by repeatedly running over it with their vehicle (for which the officers involved were not disciplined).
I do understand that the gun incident could be an honest mistake (after all, the moviegoer in Aurora, Colorado was dressed up as ‘Bane’, one of the characters from the Batman movie that was playing, who then opened fire on the other moviegoers, killing many of them. He managed to sneak in a real gun by pretending it was part of his costume). However, that was not the problem in this incident.
The problem was that the Lethbridge Police Service, seeing her dressed up as a very famous character (everybody knows Star Wars), and seeing the clunky, hard plastic costume, should have known better.  It should have been immediately apparent what the situation was. Additionally, she dropped the gun when asked, and two witnesses even tried to tell them that it was just a costume, but were ignored.
I think the following Twitter user said it best:

Watch Canadian Police Swarm, Handcuff Woman Over Toy ‘Star Wars’ Gun
Canada’s hysteria about guns was on full display as shocking footage showed police officers swarm and handcuff a 19-year-old woman who was holding a plastic gun as part of a “Star Wars” Stormtrooper character costume. The costumed teen was outside the Coco Vanilla Galactic Cantina in Lethbridge, Alberta, as part of the themed eatery’s promotion…
